As a power line mechanic with Marine Attack Squad-ron 542, it is up to Cpl. Collin G. Coggins to ensure that all equipment is inspected, running properly and ready to go at a moments notice.

Coggins maintains AV-8B Harrier engines, tires, fuel systems and water systems.

“All the requirements and the responsibilities that come with my job are my favorite part,” said Coggins. “We have daily inspections to ensure the aircraft are ready to fly.”

According to Coggins, the most challenging part of his job is working on the aircraft engine.

“The maintenance and replacing of the engine is hard,” said Coggins. “The whole aircraft was built around the engine which makes it really hard to get around sometimes.”

Coggins earned recognition as the 2nd Marine Air-craft Wing noncommissioned officer of the quarter in March for his work ethic, love of responsibility and drive to succeed.

“I was really excited and surprised when I found out I had gotten it,” said Coggins. “I was really anxious to find out the results after the board.”

Prescription Drug Take-Back DayThe Drug Enforcement Administration will host the eighth

national Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the station Post Exchange.

The purpose of the event is to provide a safe, convenient and environmentally responsible means for individuals to dis-pose of prescription drugs.

In addition to providing residents a controlled and moni-tored environment to dispose of unused prescriptions and controlled substances, the DEA uses this day to educate indi-viduals on the potential for abuse of medications.

For more information on other local drop off location, see www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/ or see MARADMIN 202/14.

How do NCO’s and other lead-ers help spread awareness of sex-ual assault?

The role leaders play in the awareness of sexual assault issues is crucial to the pre-vention of sexual assaults. We make sure Marines have their annual SAPR training and also make sure that all Marines un-derstand that harassment and assault will not be tolerated. We do this by providing a clear defi nition of what constitutes harass-ment or assault and available resources.

Why is sexual assault preven-tion so important to the Marine Corps and to others?

Sexual assault prevention is important because it goes against everything we are as Marines. In order for us to work together effectively, sexual assault and harassment need to be eradicated.

How do you personally feel we can prevent sexual assault? I believe we can prevent sexual assault and harassment by stopping it at the be-ginning. From boot camp on it needs to be made known that it will not be tolerated. Corporal Caitlin Carmella is a 22-year-old chemical,

biological, radiological and nuclear defense specialist with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. She is a Dubois, Pa. native and enlisted in February 2011. These are her thoughts about sexual assault, its effects and why it needs to stop.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Cherry Point is hosting events throughout the month to highlight the im-portance of sexual assault prevention and response.

The campaign theme for this year is “Live Our Values: Step Up to Stop Sexual Assault.”

On Wednesday, service members and civilian employees participated in “Denim Day” to raise awareness.

Cherry Point will host its 1st SAAM 5K Friday. Registra-tion is required to participate in the run. Contact your unit’s UVA for more information or to register. You can also register the morning of the run. The run is open to active duty military only.

Have a passion for wrestling and training Marines to ex-cel?

If so, Headquarters Marine Corps is seeking applicants for All-Marine Wrestling assistant coaches.

Based on MARADMIN 187/14, applicants must be an ac-tive duty staff sergeant or above and possess a USA wrestling bronze level certifi cation or be able to obtain a certifi cate within the 180 day trial period.

In addition to the indicated prerequisite, the applicant must also meet other requirements listed by the MARADMIN.

Once the application is complete, Marines stationed at commands with local Marine Corps Community Services Semper Fit facilities must submit their application through their Semper Fit athletic director for endorsement.

A step up from last year, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron won the annual fi eld meet against Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 at Cherry Point April 18.

H&HS’s top leadership won the trophy during a tie-breaking relay race between the squadrons’ commanding and executive offi cers and sergeants major.

More than 200 Marines of all ranks from the squadrons participated in 11 separate events, including soccer and volleyball matches, tug-of-war and a 7-ton truck pull.

The Cherry Point squadrons started the competition in 2004, and despite multiple de-ployments in support of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and II Marine Expeditionary Force, they have kept the tradition alive.

“The fi eld meet is for members of the wing units to have a little fun and build camara-derie,” said Master Sgt. John B. Francis, one of the event coordinators for the games.

During the games, the Marines depended on one another and worked together to ac-complish a common goal.

“Both units get to cheer for their Marines and share both the victory and defeat. That’s what builds camaraderie and unit cohesion within the squadrons,” said Francis.

In the end, the Marines and Sailors of H&HS edged out the Marines and Sailors of MWHS-2, winning the overall meet, 13-12.

YUMA, Ariz. - “I don’t ever, ever, ever want to hear the term logistics tail again. If our aircraft, missiles, and weapons are the teeth of our military might, then logistics is the muscle, tendons, and sinews that make the teeth bite down and hold on— logistics is the jawbone!”

- Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez, USAFThe commencement of spring season

brings the Weapon and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course conducted aboard Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz. Even Yuma citizens with little knowledge to the course’s purpose and objectives can observe its train-ing events. From the rampant roaring of engines in the sky, the plethora of Marines flooding to and from the main gate and the whispers of artillery and ordnance detona-tions that can be heard from the outskirts of the Yuma county, this two-month train-ing exercise exhibits an obvious upsurge of operations and personnel to support with its demanding training curriculum.

The biannual course will graduate any-where from 200 to 250 students, comprised of pilots and aircrew, and certify them as distinguished, qualified mentors in the fields of weapons and tactics. However, MCAS Yuma and its surrounding ranges will haul in a surplus of 4,000 Marines to support the expanded operations.

These additional Marines, gathered from Marine Corps installations nationwide, will reside in forward operating bases (FOB) throughout the 2.8 million acres of training ranges on MCAS Yuma to assist in WTI’s training operations. Ground element capa-bilities, such as infantry and artillery units, are integrated into the mix to provide pilots with lifelike combative scenarios and a thorough understanding on how to execute effectively collaborated maneuver tactics - the Marine Corps bread and butter.

In order for the station to sustain the amped-up operational tempo of WTI’s two-month operation, a group of unsung heroes must rise to the task of providing life sup-port for the participating Marines and their resident FOB’s.

Traveling all the way from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., 152 Marines with the 8th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB) joined MAWTS-1. Detached, yet undeniably vital to the razzle-dazzle that is a signature of WTI training, the Marines

of 8th ESB serve as the wheels driving the operations forward.

“Those Marines that are out there, a hun-dred or so miles away from Yuma, are pro-viding a capability to MAWTS in order for them to conduct WTI and the period of in-struction,” explained Capt. Scott Graneiro, the officer-in-charge of the 8th ESB detach-ment here for WTI. “Without them out there providing that capability, WTI wouldn’t be able to happen. They wouldn’t be able to get that realistic training that the ground units are providing. And with that, those Marines require life support. What we do is provide that life support for them.”

Operating out of Cannon Air Defense Complex, a training area aboard MCAS Yuma, 8th ESB’s assets vary anywhere from food services to landing support specialists. These assets were formed into a detachment of Marines to demonstrate the capabilities of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group (MLG), the commanding unit of 8th ESB and head-quartered out of Camp Lejeune.

Straying away from its typical mission of providing specific engineering support, 8th ESB entered WTI with a systematic approach to broaden its horizons and meet

needs beyond the scope of an engineer unit. “What makes 2nd MLG, and the Marine Corps in general, so unique is that we’re able to task-organize ourselves based on the mission that we’re accomplishing, and go out there and conduct that mission,” said Graneiro. “A lot of the Marines tasked with us come from all throughout MLG to form this cohesive unit that’s able to go out there and conduct this combat service support that MAWTS requires.”

“That’s what makes this unit really unique. We’ve only been together for a month, and it’s very impressive to see all these Marines come together and build this cohesive unit and provide this kind of sup-port on a daily basis.”

Granerio explained that Cannon acted as the main hub in his unit’s wheel of opera-tions. The unit would muster a majority of its Marines there, set up headquarters and receive the bulk of its supplies to be shipped out wherever necessity demands.

This life support would then be convoyed 100 miles northwest out to their combat lo-gistical support in Syphon eight to kindle the fire of ground side training operations - the spoke in the wheel of operations.

On top of coordinating the who, what, where, and when in their resupplying ef-forts, the Marines of 8th ESB were tasked with getting the necessities from point A to point B, which was an endeavor in itself.

Sergeant Adam Burkhart, a motor trans-portation operator with 8th ESB, described the great amount of responsibility associ-ated with coordinating and executing these convoys, and how the task improves the Marines of his unit.

“The main focus for me is to make sure that my corporals get a lot of time to get be-hind the wheel and gain charge of Marines, along with the gear they need to deliver the loads in a timely manner,” said Burkhart. “The organization aspect, everything from the accountability to the movement, is pret-ty much all the same as being in a combat zone. As long as they can get that in their heads, and learn how to deal with all of the moving pieces at once, they’ll be set up for success down the road.”

Possibly the most impressive capabil-ity displayed by the 8th ESB at WTI was its ability to integrate its logistical prowess with the might of aviation.

Landing support specialists, combined with the ESB from 2nd MLG’s Combat Logistics Regiment 27, were utilized in order to coordinate external aerial lifts and drop-offs, a tactic proven to be efficient and favorable in a theatre of combat.

“In Afghanistan, we have many patrol bases throughout the areas of operations, and to provide logistical support to those guys, convoys need to be pushed out,” ex-plained Graneiro. “Marines are in vehicles on the roads, and the biggest threat for Ma-rines out there is IEDs. What our helicop-ter support team and aerial delivery do is provide another means of resupply to those forward patrol bases throughout the areas. That prevents Marines from actually having to be in vehicles and possibly hitting IEDs along the route.”

Though they will not be receiving a cer-tificate warranting them as WTI instructors before their departure at the end of April, the Marines of 8th ESB have used their time in Yuma to sharpen their skills and prepare for conflict whenever it rises.

While their actions flew under the radar to most, the fact remains - without these Marines acting as the logistics combat ele-ment, operations would cease to exist.

Marines from every section of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 represent-ed the squadron while they received the Lt. Col Kevin M. Shea Memorial Unit Award as part of the 2013 Marine Corps Communication Awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., April 17.

The Marine Corps established the award in 2006 in honor of Shea, who was killed in action in Iraq while serving as the communications offi cer for the 1st Marine Regiment. The award recognizes the communications or information technology unit that made the most signifi cant contributions to the Marine Corps command, control, communication and computer fi eld.

Marines of several military occupational specialties from across the squadron attended the ceremony and demonstrated the squadron’s diversity amongst their ranks, said Lt. Col. Jaime Macias, commanding offi cer of MWCS-28.

This is second year in a row MWCS-28 has earned the Shea Award and the third over-all since 2006.

“They really adhere to balanced excellence and they really do everything right,” said Macias.

The squadron earned the award for providing support for the command element and aviation combat element of II Marine Expeditionary Force, allowing them to provide response forces and sustained readiness for the Marine Corps, while maintaining an ex-ceptional safety record and esprit de corps.

Additionally, the squadron supported operations in Afghanistan and the efforts of the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response, Moron Air Base, Spain. Also, during Weapons and Tactics Instructors Course, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., the squadron maintained a network readiness of 98 percent and facilitated com-mand and control communications without interruption.

Refl ecting on the squadron’s success, Macias said he pictures his Marines doing what they do best, supporting other Marine Corps assets and each other.

“[The squadron] was the fi rst [communications unit] to provide communications to the [SP- MAGTF Crisis Response] command element,” Macias said. “They set a standard.”

The commanding offi cer attributed the success of the unit to the squadron’s motivated junior Marines and noncommissioned offi cers.

“I have great corporals and sergeants making things happen,” he said.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - Ma-rines crossed over the berm with their

rifles in hand. They provided suppressive fire as two Marines with M136 AT4 rocket launchers followed them. The team leader checked the area behind them to make sure

it was clear, and on the order, they fired the rockets. Each shot fired echoed across the range; the first as the rocket was fired and the second as it hit its target, causing sound waves to reverberate against the mountains in the distance.

Marines with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, were evaluated on their profi-ciency while using the M136 AT4 April 11. According to leadership in the company, they felt it was important to keep Marines trained in the weapon system.

“It’s pretty important that Marines be able to do this without a whole lot of warning,” said 1st Lt. Allan Wiltshire, pla-toon commander, 2nd Platoon, 3/4. “We wouldn’t do this in a normal setting. It does not happen every day, but in the event that they would need to know what to do, they can fall back on this training.”

To begin their training, the Marines went through the technical aspects of the muni-tions and then entered a dry-fire exercise. After firing a few dummy rounds, their dry-fire progressed into live-fire. They shot the rockets at targets ranging up to 200 meters away. “It’s not something I get to do often, so when I get to, I like to take advantage of that,” said Cpl. Adam Ferretti, infantry-

man, 3/4. “It’s a good feeling to know that I can defend the country with a rocket.”

The AT4 is commonly used to pierce ar-mor, but during operations in Afghanistan, Marines have used this tool in their arsenal only when needed and in a versatile man-ner. “[This round] penetrates armor,” Wilt-shire said. “The Taliban is not currently using armor, so we use it for a hardened structure. They are able to make pretty thick mud walls and mud huts.”

More than 100 Marines with the com-pany were on the range, either to fire or as evaluators. Although, the weapon is com-monly used by infantry assaultmen, every infantry Marine was evaluated on their abilities, regardless of their billet.

“These systems are organic to our unit,” Ferretti said. “Being proficient is important to any mission that we are going to have to do. If the person that is designated to use the weapon goes down, someone else has got to be able to pick it up and use it.”

The battalion is scheduled to be disband-ed at the end of May. Their Marines will be reassigned to new units carrying on the training 3/4 has put them through to their new battalions.

main an all-weather squadron,” said Maj. Dominick J. Byrnes, a naval aviator tempo-rally assigned to HMLA-467. “Having pilots certifi ed in IFR allows the squadron to execute missions and prevent it from shutting down when bad weather rolls in.”

The instruments provide an “imaginary highway” that keeps pilots clear of towers, aircraft and other obstacles while they fl y, said Byrnes. “The more practice you have with the instruments, the more profi cient you become.”

For the fl ight, the pilots also had two Marines to support their actions, Cpl. Jeffery Kruger, an aerial observer on the fl ight, and Lance Cpl. Thomas J. Messing, a crew chief with the squadron.

“Our job during fl ights is to be an extra set of eyes on the aircraft,” said Kruger. “We call out altitude and distances around the Huey so the pilots have 360-degree aware-ness.”

Byrnes and Messing also conduct prefl ight checks to ensure their aircraft are ready for fl ight.

“Everything depends on good crew communication and awareness. Staying fully alert at all times,” said Kruger. “IFR fl ying is a perishable skill, you need to constantly train or you can get rusty.”

RESERVE from page A1

little bit more about the Reserves and other possible paths I could take with the end of my active duty time approaching,” said Mejia.

Many active duty Marines know little about their Reserve counterparts or the ben-efi ts of the Marine Corps Reserves, according to Mejia. The information presented during the road show helped Marines understand and better plan for life after their end of active service.

“The road show provided me with a lot of information,” said Mejia. “All I really knew about the Reserves before the show was the paycheck.”

While remaining in uniform, at least part time, is an advantage of joining the Re-serves, most Marines need a stable environment to begin life after active duty. If they plan to begin college or join the workforce, the Reserves might offer Marines a softer landing, according to Staff Sgt. Cecilia Gonzalez, a career planner with Deployment Processing Command-East at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

“My job is to help Marines,” said Gonzalez. “If there is a chance of helping Marines stay in, especially with the draw-down (of the active duty force), I will provide them any information I have about their Reserve opportunities.”

For more information about Reserve opportunities, contact Staff Sgt. Gonzalez via e-mail at [email protected] or call the Reserve Affairs Career Management Team at (877) 415-9275.

Sesame Street characters perform for military children at the station theater here April 30, 2012. The event was part of Sesame Street’s military family initiative, in conjunction with the USO. Sesame Street is returning to Cherry Point April 26 and 27.

Characters from the popular children’s television show, Sesame Street, plans to team up with the USO to provide the Sesame Street/USO Experience for mili-tary families at Cherry Point’s Two Rivers Theatre Saturday and Sunday.

The show, based on Sesame Street’s military family initiative, brings television characters Katie, Elmo and more of their friends to life to help military members and their families deal with the challenges of growing up in the military.

“We are incredibly grateful to be work-ing with the Sesame Street team,” said re-tired Brig. Gen. John I. Pray Jr., the USO’s president and CEO. “We know they fully understand the unique challenges facing today’s military families, and that they fully share our commitment to always be by their side to help them cope with these challenges.”

This year’s tour will demonstrate the power of friendship, with Elmo and his Sesame Street pals helping Katie open up about her fears and excitement as she deals with moving to a new place and making new friends, according to the Sesame Street/ USO Experience offi cial webpage.

The four scheduled shows are free to military families and seating is available on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. On Sat-urday, shows are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, shows are sched-uled for 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

2nd MAW Marine, Sailors share hometown ties

Cherry Point is home to thousands of service members fi lling a variety of roles in support of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. With such a large number of service members spread across dozens of squadrons, new faces can be seen around every corner.

It was for this reason that when the wing surgeon of 2nd MAW, the executive offi cer of Marine Aircraft Group 14 and the fl ight surgeon of Marine Attack Squadron 542, discovered that their roots were in the same small town of less than 8,000 people and they sat in the same seats in Richard Samsa’s physical science class, they were surprised.

“I was very surprised to fi nd two other people working in the same chain of command, at the same time both from my home town,” said Cmdr. Raymond Batz, the wing surgeon.

Their stories intersect in Grove City, Pa., a small town 60 miles North of Pittsburgh, where the three men attended Grove City Area High School over a ten-year span before going off to college and exploring their career options.

“Coming from a high school that only graduates between 180 to 200 students per class, I was not expecting to fi nd three men all working toward the same mission within 2nd MAW,” said Batz. “It is really an amazing thing; I still get chills down my spine thinking about it.”

Finding out they shared a hometown, the men dove deeper into each other’s history and discovered they all grew up within fi ve city blocks of each other.

“To know that three such high-skilled professionals hailed from our small school and ended up on the same base is pretty amazing,” said Richard Samsa, the physical science teacher who instructed all three men at Grove City High School.

Batz, the oldest of the three men, graduated GCHS in 1988 before attending Grove City College. While in high school, Batz played on the Grove City Area High School ‘Fighting Eagles’ football team and participated in several events on the track and fi eld team.

“Ray Batz was in my fi rst advanced chemistry class,” said Samsa. “Ray and his classmates helped me understand much about chemistry, I think they taught me as much as I taught them.”

His ‘Fighting Eagles’ track and fi eld teammate, Lt. Col. Bill Sauerland, graduated GCHS in 1990. He went on to attend Pennsylvania State University graduating in 1994 and earning his commission as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

“I remember Bill being particularly impressive in leading his classmates,” said Samsa. “He was a top student who was well spoken and very well respected.”

The youngest of the three men graduated GCHS in 1999. Lt. Ian Uber, like the other two graduates, went on to attend college before commissioning in the Navy. Uber graduated the Naval Academy in 2006 and began training for the Navy’s Medical Corps. Uber continued his education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences at Bethesda, Md. and the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.

“Ian Uber was one of the fi rst chemistry students who tried and succeeded in taking the AP chemistry exam,” said Samsa. “He was a great example. He stayed after school several times to learn concepts we did not have time to go over.”

The three men who grew up within fi ve blocks of each other had spread out across the country pursuing their dreams, only to fi nd that although their lives had taken them to different places, they all ended up stationed at Cherry Point.

Batz serves as the wing surgeon for 2nd MAW, Sauerland is the executive offi cer for MAG 14 and Uber is the fl ight surgeon for VMA-542.

“The fact that these three men have achieved as much as they have is not a surprise to me. They were top students in their classes,” said Samsa. “The fact that I am not surprised does not diminish my pride in their accomplishments. Their God-given abilities have been well-polished by many teachers and military offi cers over the years and I am very proud of whatever small role I had in their refi nement.”

“We all grew up in the same neighborhood and now we are working together on the same Navy-Marine Corps team, within fi ve blocks of each other again,” said Batz. “It is an interesting and unique touch point, and I’m glad we got the chance to record it because next year we could all be in different places again.”

Three new outdoor gyms are near completion at Cher-ry Point and Marine Corps Community Services hopes to unveil the venues by the end of May.

“These outdoor gyms will provide a small solution to the overcrowding at the Devil Dog Gym when Marines are trying to work out,” said Mike Largent, director of MCCS Cherry Point. “We will be able to accommodate up to 100 more Marines a day, which is great.”

The gyms, located at Lanham Field, behind the Ma-rine Dome and across the street from Marine Air Control Group 28, feature 14 workout stations and can accom-modate more than 30 people at one time. The shaded, cushioned structures will feature equipment designed to give users a full-body workout, according to Largent.

“I really think these outdoor gyms are a fantastic idea,” said Sgt. Maj. Benjamin Pangborn, the station sergeant

major. “MCCS was able to get these outdoor gyms for the Marines so they can have another opportunity and an-other place to be able to improve their physical fi tness.”

The gyms are part of a series of improvements at Cher-ry Point, including a new, larger gym facility scheduled for construction in 2016.

“These new workout stations will provide some solu-tion until we get the new gym” said Largent. “We can take care of more people because the gym isn’t accom-modating everyone and we want our service members to have the best equipment.”

With improvements and changes on the horizon, Pan-gborn hopes the new outdoor gyms will encourage Ma-rines to continue building on their physical fi tness.

“A lot of people seem skeptical because they’ve never used the outdoor gyms, but I think once they see it and get a good workout from it, they’ll have a good time,” said Pangborn.
