Following a ten-day spring tour with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, they toured the U.K. and Ireland before making this, their WKC debut.

“Hailed as one of the year’s best roots debuts by the Chicago Sun-Times and L.A. Times, and exuding the kind of radiant harmonies and easy acoustic familiarity…that are difficult to fake” —Houston Press.

DAKHABRAKHA Ç Thursday, 7 PM Modern ethnic Ukrainian quartet

Drones and beats, crimson beads and towering black lambs-wool hats make a striking backdrop for an unexpected, refreshingly novel vision of Eastern European roots music. A shadowy procession to the pounding of drums, to the murmur of a cello, morphs into an anthem, an invocation, a wild and whacky mashup of ancient and modern, regional and global. Theatrics, edgy music played on Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian instruments, and an astonishingly powerful and uncompro-mising vocal range create what the band calls “natural order amid the world’s chaos and absurdity.” This mix of contemporary, cosmopolitan savvy and intimacy with local traditions and meanings cuts to the heart of DakhaBrakha’s bigger mission: To make the world aware of the new country but ancient nation that is Ukraine.

“Wildly exciting”—The Daily Telegraph. “So mesmerising that you cease worrying about meaning and just go with the flow”—The Guardian. “Utter brilliance”—NPR.

Nation Beat’s sound lies in a deliciously original 21st-century fusion between thunderous Brazilian maracatu drumming and New Orleans second-line rhythms, Appalachian music, funk, and country blues. It is also the vibrant force of their explosive live show, which is frequently known to burst into crowd-wide Carnival-style drumming and singing.

Nero’s “soulful, idiosyncratic, and rich vocal style” and Russell’s “beau-tiful, supple range” (Toledo Blade) deliver clever and quirky songs of human emotions, of the familiar and strange (as in the tune “Moonglow Tapeworm,” which No Depression magazine called “part savvy street poetry, part surrealism”).
