W elcome to the August edition of The West Essex

Directory, your local commu-nity magazine and business Directory. Summer may or may not make an appearance, like an anxious guest afraid to put a

foot across the threshold. Diffident. That’s the word I’d use. It’s had a peep, and seen a load of floods and clouds and coldness, and isn’t quite sure whether it wants to make its entry after all. Those of you who pass along Rangers Road will have seen the development going on be-tween Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge and the Royal Forest pub. Paths, landscaping, the refur-bishment of Butler’s Retreat, and now, after the Duke of Gloucester opened it in July, the new building, known as The View, is open to the public with masses of displays and information

about Epping Forest. So even if summer decides against putting in an appearance, there is still plenty to enjoy, includ-ing the view from The View, an open, accessible balcony looking over Epping Forest. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a hawk hovering overhead. If you’re really unlucky, you’ll see me working there, also hovering, but without so much grace.

I like maths, me. Can’t get enough of it. I bet you’re the same. And, when it comes to planning the summer holiday,

you and I both try to go somewhere mathematical. And oh, the thrill of packing my calculator and my book of logarithms, and maybe some sun tan lotion.

The Greek island of Samos, in the Ae-gean sea, near the coast of Turkey, has a lot going for it. Sure, there is the sun and the sea, the ancient architecture, the coastal paths that run through olive groves to secluded bays, blossom in orchards, churches with white domes etched against a blue sea, quiet villages on hilltops, walks through forested valleys – yeah yeah yeah, that’s OK, but what most of us go there for is the maths, I’m sure.

For this is where Pythagoras was born, in about 570 BC. And he it was who came up with everybody’s favourite theorem. This wasn’t the only thing he did. He also analysed the relationship between music and maths, noting that the ringing of the blacksmiths’ hammers produced an effec-tive harmony when the ratio of the ham-mers’ sizes were half, or two-thirds, or any simple proportion.

He’s had a town named after him, Py-thagoreion, a quaint harbour on the coast, where fishing boats bob on the water and cats creep around, haunted by the smell of fish. It’s the main tourist resort on Samos.

There is also a town called Samos, a larger har-bour where ferries come from other islands and the

mainland. Back from the harbour, narrow lanes burrow between houses and criss cross squares, with, of course, the occasional cat. It’s busy here, but any small distance takes you along the coast to idyllic villages where bars line the waterfront, and more

boats bob and more cats creep. There are sandy beaches connected by coastal paths, and these wind through forest and olive groves before emerging again of a sudden at a small secluded sandy cove such as Megalo Seitani. Just to the west lies Kokkari, which is Greek for onion, set amidst pines and vineyards and surrounded by sandy beaches and cats. The interior of the island is lush and fertile, hilly towards the centre. The Valley of Nightingales is walking coun-try. It starts on the coast at Platanakia, then rises with wooded slopes amidst terraced fields of vine into the Ambelos mountains.

Elsewhere, orchards and meadows stretch across the island, grazed by goats and patrolled by mules. Or-nate churches and monaster-ies thrust out of the vegeta-tion at regular intervals, their domes and spires richly coloured and sculpted against the sky. The interior is home to an-other thousand or so cats. It really helps if you like your felines here.

Villages dot the hillsides. The soil is fertile and the villages are the heart of the agricultural economy, producing wine and olive oil.

At Ireon, or Heraion, on the south coast, are the remains of the Temple of Hera, the largest Greek temple ever built, which dates back to the 8th cen-tury BC. It was built originally on 115 pillars, but was used as a quarry in Byzantine times, which rather accelerated the process of decay, to leave a forest of pillars and plinths and remains scattered across a plain. I didn’t see any cats when I was there. But I

wasn’t really looking. I know this must sound awful, all this natural beauty. But despair not. For there is still plenty of science to enjoy. Aris-tarchus was born on Samos, the first person to propose that the earth travelled round the sun. I know

it’s not maths, but sometimes on holiday you just have to make do.

P ooches on the Plains – Haven House’s bi-annual, 3-mile sponsored dog walk, took place July 1st on Chingford Plain, London E4.

The current Miss Essex; Chingford resident, Amber Zakrzewski, launched the event, which saw local dogs and their owners, complete a 3-mile course across Epping Forest, as well as a series of doggy events and competitions. Henry the Hound, the hospice’s 4-legged mascot, was also on hand to encourage his fellow dogs to do their bit for Haven House!

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the Wood-ford Green children’s hospice said;

‘We are always looking at fun ways to get the

local community involved in fundraising for the hospice and this includes our local K9 population! The dog walk is a great event in the beautiful sur-roundings of Epping Forest and raises much needed funds for our work with life-limited and life-threatened children in the local area.’

The event was kindly sponsored by Goddard Vetinary Group and Forest Vetinary Centre.

O pen Air Thea-tre has once again returned

to Wanstead Park. The City of London Corpora-tion are presenting an exciting programme of outdoor theatre per-formances in The Tem-ple enclosure, Wanstead Park. Renowned out-door theatre production company, Illyria, have returned for a now traditional season at The Temple.

The season started with Henry V on 21 June and despite June’s poor attempt at summer weather, audiences greatly enjoyed the Shakespeare perform-ance.

All the family can enjoy the matinee performance on Tuesday 21 August of Roald Dahl’s The Twits. This promises to be a real summer holiday treat – a fantastic family afternoon of hilarious antics and fun stage effects as Mugglewump the Monkey

and Roly Poly Bird from Africa make sure the thoroughly nasty Mr and Mrs Twit get their come-uppance! Gates open at 2pm with the perform-ance starting at 3pm. Tickets are available from the Epping Forest Visitor Centre, 020 8508 0028, or from www.illyria.uk.com. Book-ing in advance is strongly advised as last year’s performances were sold out. Cost: Adult: £12.95. Children 16 years and under: £6.95. Infants 3 years and under: £1.95. T. 020 8508 0028 Superintendent of Epping Forest, Paul Thomson, said “We are delighted to welcome Illyria back to Epping Forest with an-other exciting season of Open Air Theatre in Wanstead Park. We hope

that the local community will support these events and enjoy entertainment in the historic and unique setting of The Temple.”

T he people who organise the British cinema release schedule certainly know their stuff. While the Olympics is dominating television, the cinema needed some great films just to compete. And indeed it does. The only problem is

there isn’t much after the Olympics ends. Enjoy!

Released: 1st August - Ted Mark Wahlberg plays John Bennett, a 35-year old middle class man with relation-ship problems. The only thing helping him through is his teddy bear, Ted, who came to life as the result of a childhood wish. So John has to choose between Ted the bear and his girlfriend. While the story is simple, the comedy is hilarious and Wahlberg is outstanding. The only drawback is the film is very rude and crude so be warned.

3rd August - Eames: The Architect & The Painter The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames were America's most influ-ential and important industrial designers. Named ‘The Most Influential Designers of the 20th Century’ by IDSA, they have risen to iconic status due to major contribu-tions to modern architecture, furniture, graphic design, fine art and film. This draws from a treasure trove of archi-val material to capture the personal story of Charles and Ray while placing them firmly in the context of their

fascinating times.

13th August - Brave Pixar’s first new (non-sequel) film for 3 years takes them back to their best. The plot centres on Princess Merida, who while determined to make her own path in life defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. The Princess must then rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo the beastly curse. The animation is simply stunning with a gripping, fairy tale-like story that makes this film almost perfect.

29th August - Total Recall This remake... sorry, Sony Pictures say this is “an original film based on a short story”, has the same plot as the 1990 film - A factory worker, Douglas Quaid, goes on an implanted virtual vacation; however, when the procedure goes wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Colin Farrell is good in the title role but there are far too many special effects and the more this attempts to be ‘Inception’ the more it puts you to sleep.

DVDs to please There is a large selection of DVDs and Blu-Rays released this month in various genres. Entire TV shows like the terrifying The Walking Dead, Series 2 (27th August DVD rrp: £39.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £49.99) and still hilari-ous Cheers, Series 8 - 9 (6th August DVD rrp: £19.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £24.99). Updated to HD classic Casino Royale (6th August on Blu-Ray rrp: £14.99). These make up for the feature films as the only big release is Battle-ship (20th August on DVD rrp: £19.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £24.99) which is one of the worst films ever made. Enjoy!

Sue Rowan

I was recently invited to attend a social meeting of a professional group to which I belong. I had mixed feelings about the event; it was in a town I

didn’t know at all, it was at the end of a very long day and at a time when I particularly like to be at home because it is the start of my weekend. That was the downside. The upside was that I really enjoy being with the people who were attending and I knew I would enjoy their company. I also felt that, wanting to be a good team member, it was important that I attend.

Mindful of the fact that I had made a commitment to attend the social event, I decided I would approach it in good spirit, despite the fact that as it came round to the time I had to leave, I was feeling very tired and unsociable. I drove to the general location, which I found without difficulty. When I tried to find the actual venue, however, it was a different story. I drove round and round, looking for the entrance to the car park – I could see the way out of the car park clearly, but no sign of a way in! Having no idea where I was, I drove round and round getting more tired and more cross as the minutes went by. After some 25 minutes of being completely lost, I thought enough was enough and decided to go home. I called a colleague, who was already at the venue, and told her my tale of woe. She started to give me directions to the entrance but, by then, I knew I was in no mood to go and socialise, so I apologised again and went home.

Once I got home I felt a tremendous sense of relief and spent what remained of the evening on the sofa, doing absolutely nothing.

On reflection, it is clear to me now that I was too tired and should have just given my apologies in the first place. I knew, on a deeper level, before I set off, that attending the event wasn’t the right thing for me just at that time, but neither did I want to let the team down by not going. What happened though was not only did I think I had “let everyone down” (which I clearly didn’t in reality, because they all had a great time) but that, apart from giving myself a horrible experience, I also imposed some of my distress on

my team-mates by phoning in and saying I couldn’t find it and was not going to carry on looking.

This incident made me think about the concept of “duty”, and how that fits with self-interest. I think they can go well together and there have been many times when I’ve done something out of a sense of duty rather than choice, and it has been a great experience. On this occasion, though, I put my sense of duty way above any sense of what I might or might not be ready to accomplish.

Selfishness is not an attitude to be cultivated, in my opinion, but a sense of what is actually achievable is very useful indeed. Many of my clients come to me because they live their lives believing they are capable of a lot less than they really are; others go round taking on far too much without the time or the physical resources to do what they have said they will do. Neither way is going to contribute to living your life in the most fulfilling way that you can.

Know yourself, know your strengths, know when to say “yes” and when to say “no” (and if you have difficulty saying “no”, be sure to read next month’s column because I will be giving you some hints and tips on how to do just that!). Happy August...
