March is one of the busiest months of the school year.
The 5th grade will present The Little Mermaid Jr on
Thursday, March 16th. Admission is free. Please see
page 8 for further details. The PTO will sponsor an
Author Visit on March 22nd. Please see page 4 for
further details. Carnival, the PTO’s biggest event of the
year, is on March 24th. There will be new games such as
Light Speed Competition, Potty Toss, and Fish Bowl Toss
and old favorites such as Cupcake Walk, Pop Toss, Pie
Eating, and Plinko. There will also be face painting,
glimmer body art, and much, much more! Wristbands
are now on sale. Please see pages 5 and 6 for further
details.

Cafeteria Staff Appreciation Week is March 13th-17th. With smiling faces, the West Clay Cafeteria staff members prepare and serve healthy and delicious lunches to our students every day. Thank you for making lunch a great experience for all West Clay students!

Carmel Clay Schools’ Kindergarten Registration
Available for 2017-18 School Year
Carmel Clay Schools’ kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year
is now available. The online registration form can be accessed by copying
and pasting the following link into a web browser:
https://forms.ccs.k12.in.us/ParentPortal/pages/login.aspx.
Students must be at least 5 years old by September 1, 2017, to start kindergarten in August 2017. While the state requires incoming kindergarten students to be 5 years old by August 1, 2017, Carmel Clay Schools grants a waiver to any student who will attain that age by September 1, 2017.
When registering children, parents/guardians will need an official birth certificate (not a hospital record) and proof of residency. Proof of residency consists of a rental agreement, purchase agreement, closing documents or deed and a utility (electric and/or gas) statement. Parents/guardians should also note that immunization records must be submitted to the school by the first day of instruction. Those records may also be scanned and uploaded online, dropped off at the school or sent by a doctor’s office.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be
Understood
Hello! Last month we talked about Habit 4: Think Win-Win
and choosing paths so that everyone can win. This month we
will focus on Habit 5: Seek Frist to Understand, Then to Be
Understood. It is important to actively listen to other
people’s ideas and feelings. Try to see things from the perspective of others and be open
to hearing their ideas. We listen to others without interrupting them and try our best
to understand what they are saying. We also should be confident in voicing our ideas in
a polite way.

Each year, the Indiana Department of Education conducts an
Indiana Teacher of the Year program to recognize outstanding
classroom teachers from across the state. Carmel Clay Schools is
invited to share in this special recognition program by honoring and
nominating one teacher to be a representative at the state level of
the program.
Nominations are now being accepted for the CCS Stephen A. Backer Teacher of the Year award
until midnight on March 12, 2017, at

Nominations can be made by students, parents, other staff members and community members. A
selection committee will review the nominations and select the winner. The CCS Stephen A. Backer
Teacher of the Year will then compete against teachers from across the state to represent Indiana in
the National Teacher of the Year competition.
The Carmel Clay Schools Teacher of the Year award is endowed by the Stephen A. Backer Memorial.
Throughout his life, Backer was an advocate and supporter of Carmel Clay Schools. He served on the
Carmel Clay School Board of Trustees from 1994 to 1998 and from 2006 until his passing in March 2009.
Stephen held the position of School Board President for five of those years. The Stephen A. Backer
Memorial was started shortly after his passing and continues to receive donations. Donations in support
of the Stephen A. Backer Teacher of the Year award can be made through the Carmel Education
Foundation.
Bob Shea will be visiting West Clay Elementary on March 22nd!
Bob Shea has written and illustrated over a dozen picture books including Dinosaur vs Bedtime and Unicorn. His characters and animations have appeared on Nick Jr, Playhouse Disney, and PBS Kids. to see this year’s show choir competition sets and many more show-stopping numbers by
these highly-acclaimed ensembles on March 25 at 7 pm.
Summer Spectacular Show Choir Camp
Have fun singing and dancing this summer and learning the art of show choir from the
pros! This summer day camp meets daily from June 5-8th, 2017 at Carmel High School
and is available for students entering 5th - 9th grade in the Fall of 2017. Students
rehearse all week with a guest director and choreographer, and the camp culminates in a
performance for family and friends. Three groups: 5th/6th grade - 9am-noon; 7th/8th

FOREST DALE ELEMENTARY PTO MULCH SALE:
Spring is coming and the annual Forest Dale PTO Mulch Sale is now underway! Many
mulch varieties from Musselman Farms are available to you at great rates with no sales tax
and free delivery. Delivery is free to ALL homes within the Carmel Clay School district this
year, regardless of zip code, so please share this great offer with your family, friends, and
neighbors throughout Carmel! This is a great way to help the school and beautify your yard
