Imagineahousewithmanyroomsandmanydoors.Mostofthehouseisfamiliar,butoccasionallyahiddendoorappearsandopens.Astaircaseleadsupwardandatthetopisaradi-antlight.Toentertheupperroomistranscendent.Toentertheroomistoknowonesowneffervescenceandgoodnessandgloryandunity.Thebeckoningagentislove.

IstumbledacrossastaircaselikethisinMexicoCityin1994.Iwasthereonabusinesstrip.Mymeetingsstartedinlateaf-ternoon,sowithmyfreemorningItookacabtoTeotihuacan,theAztecruinsoutsidethecity.TherestandingatthebaseofthethreegreatTemples,Ichartedmycourse:climballthreeintwohoursandthenbacktothehotel,eat,change,nap,andofftowork.IscampereduptheTempleoftheMoon,andthenheadeduptheTempleoftheSun.Thestonesweremoremas-sive,thealtitudeofMexicoCitywascatchingupwithme,andthesunwasbeatingmoreintenselyfromthesky.Ibegantotire.WhenIarrivedatthetop,Isattorest.Nooneelsewasthere,soIfoldedmylegsundermeandbegantomeditate.Aninstantlaterthecloudsbegantorushthroughthesky,thenbreakapart,scatteringasifbanishedbyaninvisiblewand.FrombehindtheoneremainingcloudburstforthlightmoreradiantthanIhaveeverseen.Evenasthelightpulledmeupward,therewasanequalandoppositeforcedrawingmedeepintotheearth.Iwasgroundedandtransported,stretchedintothefullnessofmysoultouchingtheetherealandthecorporealallatonce.Whatmayhavebeenasecondseemedaneternity,andIwassatiatedwithafeelingofwholenessandconnectedness.Loveinfusedandemanatedthroughandinallthings.

Ireturnedtothecab,havingnointerestinclimbingthethirdTemple.Iarrivedatthehotel,ate,freshenedupandnapped.AsIengagedinmybusinessappointments,thegreatradiancefadedandfadedandfaded.Byeveningthespacethatwasopenedupbymystaircaseexperience illedwiththedetritusoflife.Ifeltdesperateandcold,andsleepcamein itsandstarts.Then,inthedeepestcornerofthenight,alightap-peared;thoughnotreallyalight,moreavoice,thoughnovoicewasspeaking.ItwasmorelikeaWordpresence,un-seenandunheard,yetstillfullyknown.Themassivetrans-cendentexperienceonthemountaintopsettledinmyhotelroomasanintimatefriend,asadivinecompanion,theretostillmyrestlessheartandsoothemyanxioussoul.ThatwaswhenIbecameacommittedfollowerofJesus.

EveryLentIseektoreturntothisplaceofdivineencounter.IsetaboutwinnowingthehabitsthatdistractmefromGod,andaddingdisciplinesthatmightbringmeclosertoGod.LentisatimewhenIknockaroundmyhousetryingto indthehiddendoortothestaircaseoflight.Whatusuallyhap-pensisthatIendupdustingthe loorsandthewallswithmykneesandelbowsasIsearchforthehiddendoor.

AndasIamrummagingaround,IrecallthemomentswhenIfeltclosesttoGod,andthememorybringstherealitybackin-tobeing.Thesememoriesarecalledtouchstonemoments,andtheybecomecentraltomyprayerlifeduringLent.Ase-condthinghappensasI’msearchingforthedoor.I indsomethingthatIwasmissing;usuallysomethingthatIdidn’tevenknowIwasmissing.Inevitably,itcomesintheformofsomerelationalerrancy.SothattoobecomespartofmyLen-tenengagementaswell.

ThisLentwasaseasonoftouchstonememoriesandrelation-shipconsiderations.ThatisthepowerofLentwhichwearegiventhroughthewisdomofourChristianancestors.Itisastructuredtimewhenwesearchthehouseforhiddendoors,andbyoureffortsdustthe loor,polishthetouchstones,andindhiddenpearlswedidn’tevenknowwerelost.Andthe

blessingisthatafter40days,justasthehighexpectationsfadefor indingthedoortotranscendence,Easterappears.Theemptytombistheopendoormadepermanent.Theemp-tytombholdstheetherealandcorporealtogetherinoneplace,accessibletoallpeopleatalltimes.Soevenaswecon-tinuetoseekthetouchstonesandsearchforthestaircase,thereremainstheemptytombwheretheWordresides,un-seenandunheard,yetstillfullyknown.ThisistheassuranceofEaster;anassurancemadepermanentthroughthebeckon-ingloveknownastheresurrection.

The Liturgical Year: Easter

Easter is the sacred and joyous celebration of Christ’s resurrec-tion from the dead. The Easter season is what we call the fifty days Christ spent walking on earth as a resurrected being. This is party time: we celebrate Jesus’s appearances to the disciples after death and his post-resurrection teachings. The Easter sea-son is the most festive season of the Christian year, giving full voice to expressions of joy and praise that were removed from the liturgy at the beginning of Lent. Our final celebration is the Feast of the Ascension which commemorates our Lord’s return to God. When we live a linear calendar, we’re on our way to dying; when we live the circular Liturgical calendar, we ascend into deeper relationship with God. TheseasonofLentconcludesonHolyThursdaymorningandthateveningtheTriduumbeginswiththewashingoffeet,theLastSupper,thestrippingofthealtarandtheVigilbeforetheAltarofRepose.WecallthisserviceMaundyThursday,whichwillbeginThursdaynightat7:30PM.Priortothisservice,at6:30PM,therewillbealightdinnerservedintheGreatHall.
