THE WEEKLY WORD EPIPHANY PARISH OF SEATTLE . JUNE 23, 2014 The Trinity and the False Great Paradigm (What Is the Good Life?) Dear Epiphany, Last Sunday was Pentecost, and I preached a sermon on Epiphany as a Shame‐Free Zone. The infrastructure of shame is constructed on the misconception that there is a “correct” way to live that results in “the good life.” These “great paradigms” function as overarching ideas un‐ der which the small details of our lives are to be lived out. If we can conform to the great paradigm, we will achieve “the good life.” Now here is the quandary: we choose our own great paradigm. Some try private property, others education, democracy, marriage, religion, healthcare, racism, business, psychotherapy, or ϐitness. Next time you’re at a cocktail party, go ϐishing for great paradigms. Ask some questions, push back a little, and their great paradigm will quickly re‐ veal itself. None of these great paradigms are bad in and of themselves; they only become dead weight when they are honored as the greatest good in life. For a long time the church has sought to garner compliance and con‐ formity through shame with, it appears, more staying power than po‐ litical parties, diet plans, workout fads, fashion trends, educational strategies, or even international treaties. But the goal of the church should not be to hold onto power by shaming. Instead church may want to consider the Trinity and grace. At Epiphany, as a practical matter, we consider the Trinity by learning about God. This happens through education and through the spiritual practices, both sought in community. In a way, church can be thought of as a school where we learn about our spiritual life, and a gym where we work our spirit out. The spiritual practices taught at Epiphany are daily prayer, weekly worship, weekly Sabbath, liturgical seasons, pilgrimage, fasting, and tithing. We talk about these a lot. First, they are the universal exercises proclaimed and taught within every religious tradition. Why? Because every enduring religious tradition has found that when people exercise their spirit, it gets stronger. And second, it is important to keep in mind that the spiritual practices are for you and me, not for God. God does not love us any more if we participate in the spiritual practices, but if we do participate in them, we will inevitably be spending more time
