News Round Up

Baby Glynn We would like to congratulate Mrs Jayne Glynn and her husband, Mr Charlie Glynn, on the safe arrival of Albert George Glynn. He was born on August 25 th and weighed a healthy 9lbs 8oz. Both Mummy and baby are doing well. Welcome to the world Albie!

World News: Nairobi, Kenya Could you play dead for four and a half hours? I couldn’t!

By Jacob Hartley

In the recent Westgate Shopping Centre siege (a terrorist attack on a Nairobi shopping mall) in Kenya, Faith Wambua displayed incredible courage in playing dead to survive. She was in the mall shopping at the time of the attack when she heard a very loud bang. Assuming that the building was collapsing, she told all her children to lie down but when the gunshots fired, she figured that it was a bank robbery and that it would all be over in five or six minutes.

Faith commented ‘I just told the children: 'Lie down, lie down'. I thought it must just be a normal robbery and within five to six minutes it would be over. But then time just passed and we were waiting to hear someone say: 'OK, get up they have gone.' But nothing of the sort. It seemed like something worse than I thought.’

Then she heard a voice crying ‘Mama, Mama’ and someone near her called out. Within five seconds, there were two shots and she was still.

The same thing happened to her, although this time help was on its way and they were rescued.

What a terrible ordeal and it makes us thankful that we live in a calm, safe town.

Building on the Open Space at Riverpark Leisure Centre

The Leisure Centre may be built on. The

council are planning to build on the cricket

field round the back, where many people

currently enjoy a picnic or a kick-about. They

are planning to build a 50 metre pool and

replace the current leisure centre with more

parking space and a bigger leisure facility. What do you think? A good idea or bad?

Should they build a new leisure centre at Bar End (where WADAC athletics club

train)?

We want to know: If Winchester Council go ahead with the Leisure Centre plans, what will happen to the Roundtable’s Guy Fawkes bonfire celebration in years to come?

Ain’t he cute? By Jacob Hartley

In London Zoo, a new, adorable Sumatran tiger was born on 22 September 2013.

The zookeepers do not yet know the gender of the baby, the existence of which they

kept secret for 105 days while her five-year old mother [named Milati] was pregnant.

Although the zookeepers were very excited at the birth of the baby they were a little

concerned before the birth as it was the Sumatran mother’s first child. However, her

maternal instincts kicked in very quickly and she is now happy with her child.

Zookeeper Paul Kybett said: "We were nervous about the pregnancy, as it was

Melati's first cub and we didn't know how she'd react. He added: "It's still very early

days, so we're leaving Melati to take care of her adorable baby, and our cameras

allow us to watch them both from a distance. Perhaps you could visit them during

half-term?

Sadly…

Later in the half term we found out that the little cub was drowned. He had escaped

the view of the webcam and went to have a drink he fell in to the drinking area and

drowned. He was found washed up next to it and the keepers are distressed.

Weeke School Building Works

Question: What is going on around the school? Diggers, hard hats, drills and people in fluorescent jackets…

Answer: We are having new classrooms, offices and play areas!

First phase

This will be started during October half term. Four new classrooms on two stories: One practical teaching room and a new staffroom will be built where the Year 6 huts were positioned last year.

Second phase This will begin in the summer holidays of 2014. The offices and first aid room will be reconfigured to make a new reception area and internal offices.

(Reconfigured means re-organised or re-modelled, not built from scratch.)

The finished build is due to open in September 2014. Watch this space for updates of the progress of the build.

The Steve Brine Interview

Newspaper Club contacted Steve Brine, our MP, asking if we could interview him in his local constituency office on Stockbridge Road, Winchester, or by telephone. He surprised us by agreeing to an interview but holding it at the House of Commons. We are all going to visit him on 7th January 2014. We are also going to have a tour of If you have any questions you would like us to ask him, drop them into the Newspaper Club box.

The questions we have thought up so far are: ●If you were PM, what would be the one thing you would change in the country? ●What is the best thing about your job? ●What are the least favourite aspects of your job? ●What are you most proud about doing for Winchester’s community? ●Are there any changes you haven’t had time to make yet? ●Did you get to choose which constituency you get to work in? ●What is your view on taking action against Syria? Should we have done?

The club are very excited at the prospect of meeting an MP because it will be a new experience for them.

The Monster Poetry Competition By Elise and Lucie

Recently, there has been a poetry competition held by an organisation called The Young

Writers. Children were asked to write a narrative poem (story poem) about monsters. Mrs

Cummins told us about it in assembly and gave us some ideas. The school have submitted

around 35 entries. If the poems get chosen, they will be published in a book and people

will win book tokens. The school could also win money to spend on the library. Watch this

space for news on our success!

Here’s what a year 4 said, having created their own monster:

“Making a monster was really fun and inspired me to write more poems.”

This is what a year 6 told us:

“I enjoyed writing about my monster because it made me realise that I was more creative

than I ever thought!”

Good luck if you submitted a poem!

Take One Poem Day

At the start of the year, all of the classes took a poem and wrote their own versions of it or used it as a stimulus (something that helps you come up with other ideas) for art and drama. Take One Poem day helped to get Weeke’s children back into the school routine as they were all super relaxed from their six week holiday. Here are some people’s thoughts on the day: “I really enjoyed it because it was fun and we got to pretend to be naughty and take lots of interesting pictures of ourselves. We did teachers rules by Peter Dixon” Theo, Pine Class. “I really liked it because it was fun; first of all we read the poem then read the second part and then wrote the next part, either in poem or story. We did the Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lea.” Lucy,Sycamore Class. Our displays are out in the corridors which shows every classes poems. Please go and look at our wonderful displays and all of our hard work.

Music at Weeke

By Maisie and Danielle

Do you like music? Well, if you do this school is a good place for you! Weeke Primary teaches various instruments such as: violin, cello, piano, guitar, drums, recorders etc.

Music teachers visit the school to give these lessons and our own talented Mrs Burgoyne and Mrs Gazzard give recorder lessons.

Weeke School also provides whole class learning of instruments with the Hampshire Music Service which helps children in Year 4 experience learning an instrument. Quite a few children have taken up an instrument as a result of these lessons.

If you would like to know about the top 10 instruments which children at Weeke learn both in school and at lessons outside of school, read on:

1. Piano 6. Violin 2. Electric guitar 7. Harmonica 3. Drums 8. Saxophone 4. Flute 9. Clarinet 5. Acoustic guitar 10. Trumpet

(Unfortunately we don’t teach all of these instruments but there are lots of local music teachers in the community and you can always use the internet to help you learn the

basics.)

Orchestra

Some members of Newspaper Club (Maisie) go to a music club called Orchestra which is on Thursdays at lunchtime from 11:30 to 12:30 run by Mr Garrod. Katie from Year 6 attends and said:

I started Orchestra in early Year 5 and I play the cornet . I enjoy doing Orchestra

although I have to miss a bit of literacy.

The New Year 6

We’ve all been back at school for eight weeks now and Year 6 are starting to get to grips with what it’s like being at top of the school. Applications for Monitor jobs are sorted and the forms for secondary schools have been filled in (deadline last day of October parents!). This is a scary time for Year 6 as everyone is anxiously waiting to see if they have been selected for their school of choice. Some parents have disagreed with their children about their preferences, but

Page 8: THE WEEKE WHIZZ - weekeprimary.com super school Crossword . News Round Up Baby Glynn We would like to congratulate Mrs Jayne Glynn and her husband, Mr Charlie Glynn, on …

managed to reach a compromise. We are lucky to have three great secondary schools in town, something for everyone! With the Christmas Bazaar fast approaching, this is the last year for Year 6 to have a go at winning the Enterprise Stall competition. Here are some of our thoughts about being in Year 6: “The difference with Year 6 is that you have the responsibility of doing things like

monitor jobs and bringing in torture tables daily.” Nola Stockley, Pine

“It’s fun and there are different oppurtunities such as SATS and the visit to The

Globe theartre in London. All the Year Sixes in recent years have really enjoyed that particular visit.”

Eleanor Quigley, Sycamore

“There is more homework which prepares us for secondary school. The class is bigger with two teachers, which can be confusing as we are used to having one.

We are not scared at all about moving up.”

Tom Flemington and Jacob Hartley, Pine

As you can see everyone is quite excited about being a part of Year 6. We asked 18 Year 6 children what they were most looking forward to this year:

SATS: III The Residential: IIIII IIIII I The End of Year Production: II Cycle Proficiency: II

Y6 Trip to The Globe, Southwark, London

On Tuesday the 22nd of October the Year 6 classes- Sycamore and Pine, went to The Globe Theatre in London. Benet said “I thought that going to The Globe was a very big experience but I was a bit scared of walking over the Millennium Bridge” Hollie said “It is interesting to know now how Shakespearian actors entered and exited the stage.” Maisie K said “The best bit was when we did the drama workshop when we got to be clay and are partner put us in a position.” Danielle said “It was a good experience to be able to be an actor for a bit at The Globe.” Katie said “I loved the trip as it was very fun and gave me a taste of acting.” Charlotte said “I loved The Globe and now I have a taste of Shakespearian life.” Oscar M said “It was a good experience.” The coach journey took 3 hours but it was worth it when we got there and it has brought our work on Shakespeare to life seeing where he actually put his plays on.

Why don’t you… turn off your television and do something more exciting instead?

(Apparently, this is the name of a children’s tv programme that some of the older

teachers watched in the good old days when children didn’t spend all their time on

electronic games and computers!!)

Bored? Need something exciting to do? Why don’t you try out some of these activities in

and around Winchester for something different and fun.

River Park Leisure Centre: With two swimming pools, a skate park, a gym, and children’s

activities, the centre is a perfect place to have fun whatever the weather.

Intech hands- on science centre: Located about 3 miles from Winchester city centre, Intech

is a unique centre with over 100 exhibitions in the main exhibit area to amuse the whole

family. There is also a Planetarium.

Winchester Discovery Centre: Even if you are not usually a reader there will be a book for

you. With everything from author talks to surprisingly fun maths workshops, the Discovery

Centre has something for everyone.

Winchester Christmas Market: Whilst shopping for beautiful Christmas pressies, ice-

skating and snacking on sweet treats from the stands, you can admire the stunning

cathedral and watch the fireworks exploding above. Remember your thickest coats!

Westgate Museum: Discover some of Winchester’s history at this beautiful old building at

the top of the High Street. You can make beautiful brass rubbings and purchase unique

items at the museum gift shop.

The Military Museums: at the Barracks. Leave your parents to have a cup of tea at the café

and wander around the exhibits.

Halloween

Not everybody celebrates Halloween, but if you do, here are some important rules about keeping safe and happy while trick or treating or answering the door:

1. Only go to houses of people you know.

2. Always go with an adult.

3. If you’re at home and not trick or treating don’t answer the door but if you have

sweeties ready to be shared, then do, but with an adults supervision. You could

leave a bowl of sweeties outside your front door so that people can help themselves.

4. Collect as many sweeties as possible.

5. Try to be seen (because if you’re dressed up as a black fairy then people might not

see you and could bash into you which might hurt you as well). Also it could be

dangerous when you cross the road.

6. Make sure you have some sort of light to guide you in the dark.

7. Cary a bag so you don’t lose any sweets.

If you don’t want trick or treaters visiting, close your curtains, do not put a pumpkin outside your front door and turn all your lights off. You could have a very early night

instead!

The Amazing Fundraiser, Mrs Skeen (Pam Skeen)

By Brian Skeen

What did she do?

My Mum, Mrs Skeen (Pam Skeen), does fundraising and she has fundraised for many

companies such as Hampshire Search and Rescue and The Lillie Foundation. Her main job is

being an L.S.A. at Weeke School where she works in Year 4. With her old job (Hampshire

Search And Rescue) she got invited to Buckingham Palace by The Queen to attend a garden

party to celebrate her amazing charity work. When she fundraised for the Lillie Foundation

she skydived from 10,000 feet. Mrs Manktelow (Year 1 teacher) and some of their friends

did this too! The Lilly Foundation is a charity which helps to raise awareness of

mitochondrial disease.

Theo’s Weeke School Sports Page Football Club Mr Lowndes, who teaches in Maple Class in Year 4, has decided to continue to run his football club. It will be on Thursday lunchtimes for 40 minutes and is open to Year’s 3, 4, 5 and 6. You will not have to pay because it is run by a teacher during school time. Try to sign up very soon otherwise you will not get as much playing time as it is only on the length of the professional football season (that ends next May at the latest). In the club, you get to do fun training games to boost your skills and afterwards, an actual game of football. Why not give it a go?

Karate Club 2013 is Karate Club’s second successful year running. It costs £4 a lesson and takes place every Wednesday at 7:45am to 8:45am in the school hall. This may seem early but it’s well worth it and everybody who takes part has fun. They are looking for new applicants for the club. To prove that it’s fun, we interviewed Jacob Hartley in Year Six: Jacob, do you enjoy the Karate Club? Absolutely! Is it worth getting up so early? I think it is and it freshens you up for the long day ahead. What skills do you learn? You learn lots of defensive skills and it really boosts your confidence. Are the teachers nice? The instructors are kind and helpful, always willing to share a joke. Finally, is it safe and who can join? It’s as safe as you can get when practising a martial art as there is no contact. Anyone from any year, any school can join for just £4 a lesson. Thank you for your time Jacob. It’s been a pleasure.

Cross Country Anna Goldsmith, Natalie Thomas and Marie Prince are going to be running the Cross Country club again. It is highly popular and lots of people go. You can improve your running, and all the fun games and activities can help you run even faster! It’s open to anyone in Key Stage 2 and is probably going to be held on Monday lunchtimes. It is extremely fun and people in the club are favourites to take part in races at different schools, so give it a go and wow your friends afterwards with your amazing sprints!

So why don’t you go along and try some clubs out?

Charlotte’s Weeke School Sports Page By Charlotte Prince-Rayner

What else is going on?

These are some of the sports that are going on or will be going on at Weeke Primary School.

Netball There is a Netball Club every Tuesday with Mrs Swales, Mrs Prince and Megan Ford. We enter lots of competitions and it is a lot of fun. Danielle, Year 6, said that her favourite thing to do in netball is ‘To take part in competitions and learn new skills.’ Years 4,5 and 6 have the opportunity of joining this magnificent club and who knows, maybe we will make it to the Hampshire Games!

Badminton Badminton this year could be the most EXCITING YEAR EVER. Mrs Lado has had the responsibility of teaching talent- filled KS2 children in the hall on Thursday mornings before school. Year 6s Ollie Crossland when ask why he signed up for badminton said “I signed up because it was a new sport, I like playing racket sports and I really wanted to learn new skills.”

Tag Rugby Mr Allmark will be holding a Tag Rugby club for years 3,4,5 and and 6 for the second half of the Autumn term. When asked why he liked rugby, Brian Skeen replied: ‘Because tag Rugby is a really fun sport and Mr Allmark is a very enthusiastic leader!’ Normally it’s out on the field and for rugby’s, sake BRING YOUR P.E KIT!

My Netball Experience: Reach for your Dreams

By Charlotte Prince-Rayner, Y6

On Saturday 12th I went up to London to Hampstead School and played Netball with three

of the England Netball team players. Their names were Tracy Neville, captain of the team,

Sasha Corbin, the wing attack, and Kadean Corbin. They taught all the children that had

achieved one Ace of the Week in a netball country road show that took place in the

summer. The road show included teaching from Jo Hearten, the England goal attack. She

gave us lots of advice about shooting marking and much more. Other than that we had

four other coaches who taught us most of the time we were there.

On Day One, my mum and I arrived at Hampstead School and before we walked in I made

sure I had everything like my netball, my snack and a drink. Then we walked in and at the

door was Kabean who helped us check in. After that I went on to the balcony where the

parents were watching and I put my bag and jumper on the floor. Next I took my netball

and went down stairs to where the courts were. I didn’t know anyone there so I just threw

the ball at the wall and caught it again as someone would do if they were passing it to me.

Then in came Tracy Neville the England captain and Sasha Corbin the wing attack. They

called everyone in and we sat in front of these amazing netballers. They welcomed

everyone and they split us into 2 separate groups, older and younger. I was in the Over 11

because I had just turned 11.

We started off with Sasha Corbin as our coach and she taught us a lot about tactics for any

defender. I am a defender myself so I was very keen. We played lots of games that

included getting the ball really quickly. One of them was when our hands were on our head

Page 14: THE WEEKE WHIZZ - weekeprimary.com super school Crossword . News Round Up Baby Glynn We would like to congratulate Mrs Jayne Glynn and her husband, Mr Charlie Glynn, on …

and someone [our pair] dropped the ball in front of us and we had to catch the ball without

it bouncing on the floo,r it was very hard but I liked the challenge.

Soon after it was time for lunch so we went up to the balcony where all of our parents were

watching and they had our beloved food. To be a good netballer you need to eat the right

food so I had an energy bar, banana, water, tuna and sweet corn sandwich I bit of chocolate

[to be sneaky] and a packet of crisps.

Eventually we went back out onto the court and this was the time we had the chance to get

an autograph from the stars. Because I love netball sooooo much I had loads of things for

all 3 of them to sign: I had 2 shoes, autograph book, my t-shirt, my netball and a card for

my friend.

Sadly my mum didn’t let me get everything signed otherwise they would get very board.

Next we got separated into three groups GA GS or GK WD WA or C GD I went in the C GD

and we had Sasha again and we did a couple of half court matches and at the last match I

was against a really good player. There was no way I was going to cope, but I did.

Soon after it was time to go I was really sad it had all gone very quickly so I said goodbye to

the amazing coaches and me and my mum walked to the car and we drove off. If you want

to be a netballer the first step is to join a netball club at school. And who knows you could

become an England netballer one day!
