Feast Day

Last Friday, the entire school celebrated the Feast Day of St Jeanne de Lestonnac, foundress of the Order of the Company of Mary Our Lady. Mass followed the theme

of ‘Love in Action’ with everyone joining in a joyous celebration of her life and the legacy she has left us today. Choirs, musicians, servers, readers, ministers - everyone played their part in making the Mass special with Fr John concelebrating with Fr Mervyn who asked us about how we feel when we are told what to do and reminded us that even adults sometimes need guiding to ‘do the right thing’. The benefits of modern technology and the hard work of the IT department meant we had projection in the hall for the first time and this enabled us to watch a

reflective video after communion. It featured people helping others so we could challenge ourselves as to where we can make a difference. After Mass there was an opportunity to all eat together with the prep and senior classes paired up to play together. A huge thanks to Anthony and the maintenance team and Mandy and her catering staff for all the work they put into preparing the hall, grounds and delicious BBQ.

This week marks the canonisation of St Jeanne de Lestonnac, when the church recognised her as a saint and affirmed her legacy of which we are a part. A woman of her time with a message just a relevant now as we follow in her footsteps and play our part in continuing her work. She encouraged her Sisters to always lend a helping hand and we do the same as a school today. Not in theory but in practice. Helping others when we can, however we can. Robot Exhibition This week, ICT students in

Year 10 and 13 visited the Robot exhibition at the Science Museum, London. The exhibition traced the 500 year history to make machines mirror humanity. It showcased cutting-edge technology such as a robot called ‘Pepper’. This robot is designed to tell magical stories and socially interact with children. The exhibition was a fascinating insight into both the impacts and the consequences of robots in society providing interactive examples of the potential uses of robots in different sectors. For example, ‘Miraikan’ is a newsreader robot and ‘Kaspar’ is a robot designed to help children with autism. Overall the show was an engaging and thought-provoking experience.

Mrs Ha Completes the Moonwalk!

I just wanted to say an enormous thank you to everyone who donated to my fundraising page. Your donations and well wishes made such a huge difference in the early hours of the morning when the cold and tiredness were really setting in! We started at 11pm and we finished at 8am. It took 9 hours to walk 26.2 miles and it was an amazing experience. As a result of your incredible kindness I was able to raise over £1000 and £4 million had been raised for Breast Cancer by all those doing the Moonwalk before the event even took place. I was really overwhelmed by the number of staff who donated and by all the lovely messages I received-it was a reminder of what a special place we work in and what a tremendous sense of community we have!

If you would still like to donate to this amazing charity, Mrs Ha’s donation page is as follows:

Thank you again,

An incredibly grateful and tired Moonwalker!

School News FEAST DAY MASS

Last Friday the school celebrated the Feast Day of St Jeanne de Lestonnac, the foundress of the Sisters of the Company of Mary our Lady. The whole school Mass, held in the sports hall, was a great event with the pupils performing a range of choral music and Hymns featuring both the Junior and Senior choirs. Special mention to Roisin M who sang a special solo in the Alleluia, Darcey A with her lovely solo leading of the Kyrie movement and the girls performed beautifully throughout the service, accompanied by Mrs Shaw, Miss D’Aprano, Mr Sweeney and Mr Black.

Prep News Year 1 Music Workshop with Glenesk School

Please join us at 3.00pm in the theatre. The performance will start promptly at 3.10pm and finish at 3.30pm. Please park in Car Park 1 and we will then dismiss as normal from the playground after the girls have returned to class to collect their belongings.

LAMDA—Prep

Dear Parents,

I was delighted by the tremendous results achieved by the LAMDA girls. They all put in a lot of time and effort to gain amazing marks—eighteen Distinctions and ten Merits. Many girls scored in the high nineties and Darcey A scored a perfect 100%. Huge congratulations to Darcey and all the girls.

The LAMDA girls from Prep 4-6 are now working towards their Acting exam taking place on 14th June. For this, they will have to learn dramatic extracts and prepare theory. It would be a great help if you would encourage your daughter to go over her work regularly.

All the LAMDA girls will be involved in the LAMDA Showcase which will take place on the 27th June. The years 5 and 6 girls will perform after school and the year 3 and 4s will perform in the morning. More details on this will follow.

READING MATTERS @NDS_LIBRARY

Prep Library News This Week in the Library…

Reception

The girls in Reception class love their weekly visit to the library and spend some time deliberating over the books and chatting about them together before they make up their minds on which to take home. Book chat starts at a very young age at Notre Dame!

Chatterbooks

This week at our Chatterbooks meeting the girls had a look at the Summer Reading Challenge website and each of them now has their own personal log-in to allow them to enter book reviews. These reviews will help library users to choose the books they will read as part of the challenge during the school holidays. We also had a go at making our own bookmarks with a large range of designs on display from wise owls to dragons and from puppies to monsters. Well done girls.

Author visit to our Younger Pupils

We are delighted that Tracey Corderoy who has written over 40 children’s books will be visiting Notre Dame on Tuesday 13th June to work with the children from Butterflies class up to Year 3. Tracey will be providing storytelling sessions and craft making so it should be a lovely day for everyone.

There will be the opportunity to purchase copies of Tracey’s books for signing on the day. Further details regarding this will be sent to the parents of all children involved in the event in the next few days.

Senior Library News 2017 SHORTLIST FOR THE PRESTIGIOUS CILIP CARNEGIE MEDAL

This year is believed to be the strongest year for nominations, due partly to the fact that many of the books tackle issues that would not have previously been addressed in children’s literature. As highlighted below - the shortlist brings a wide range of stories – from the funny and fantastical to tragic and difficult stories that will challenge readers.

Books in contention for the Carnegie includes Frank Cottrell Boyce’s Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth (8+) which has been described as ‘out of this world funny’; Philip Reeve’s epic fantasy Railhead (12+) which is set in a whimsical future world where sentient trains crisscross the universe and Wolf Hollow (10+) by Lauren Wolk which is set in 1940s rural America and has shades of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. The Bone Sparrow (11+) is Zana Fraillon’s acclaimed novel about refugees: ‘Simply and innocently told from a child’s perspective this important and timely novel brings to like the risks people are willing to take to make their voices heard and the resilience of the human spirit.’ Carnegie For older readers we have The Stars as Oktober Bend (13+) by Glenda Millard which is a tale of two damaged people who find redemption and love, and The Smell of Other People’s Houses (13+) by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock which is ‘an exciting tapestry of four rites of passage stories told across four different seasons against the backdrop of Alaskan life and landscapes’. Carnegie Salt to the Sea (13+) by Ruth Sepetys is based on the true story from the Second World War when the German ship the Wilhelm Gustloff sank in port with over 9000 civilians on board. It follows the journey of a group of people trekking across Germany, desperate to escape the war-ravaged land. Finally we have Beck (16+) written by Mal Peet and finished by Meg Rosoff, following his death in 2015. It is a coming-of-age story about a mixed-race boy in America during the 1900s. The winner will be announced on Monday 19th June and further information can be found at http://carnegiegreenaway.org.uk.

We have copies of all of the short-listed books in the Library and they are also being given out as Library prizes.

Book Awards Well done to Isabelle P and Caitlin

P (Year 9) who have both completed

their reading passports and received

Book Awards.

Gala Report – Notre Dame v St Hilary’s Year 2 & 3

Last Thursday Notre Dame hosted a gala against St Hilary’s for Year 2 and Year 3. Some of the Year 2 girls were very nervous as it was their first school gala against another school.

SPORTS BOARD PREP @NotreDame_SPORT

SENIOR @NotreDame_SPORT

Notre Dame started very well coming 1st and 2nd in the first two races. Then for the next six races the points were split evenly as we finished 1st and 4th in each race. Again the relays proved to be the turning point as all the girls were involved and we managed to finish 1st and 3rd in all the relay events.

The final score was Notre Dame 74 – St Hilary’s 56

The following girls all set a new personal best (PB) time:-

Year 3 - Sabrina (BK), Mia Lily (BR and FC), Megan (FC and FC again), Lexi (FC), Anouk (FC and FC again), Serena (FC), Rachel (FC) and Molly (FC) – All the year 3 team set new records, that is impressive. Swimmer of the night for Year 3 was Mia Lily and special mention to Megan.

Year 2 – Grace P (BR), Michelle (FC), Ella (FC), Valentina (BK and FC), and Grace C (BR and FC). The Year 2 swimmer of the night was Valentina – amazing BK time. Special mention to Grace C.

Many thanks to Mrs Smith and to Darcey and Emily for all your help at the Gala – You did a great job.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the year two girls progress next year, feeling very excited!
