Greetings from the East, Continued We are also coming upon our summer pork burger stand and fire truck schedule with the Dan Patch Days, Kolacky Days, Derby Days, Le Sueur County Fair, and Dozinky Days all coming up fast. Lastly I would like to thank all of the brothers, family, and friends that have helped out on the past 2 demolition days for the new lodge space. We have disposed of a 20 yard dumpster of debris so far with another 40 or so yards sitting on the floor. The next work day is on the 4th of May from 9 am to 2 pm. We will be disposing of the debris that is already taken down and then demolishing another long wall in the space. How far we get depends on how many brothers can attend. I’ve received a few confirmations from the brethren but not enough to make some good progress. Please email me at [email protected] if you are able to attend, even just for an hour or two. Thank you everyone for your support thus far this year and I look forward to a fun and productive summer! Yours fraternally, Jason Bergerson Worshipful Master [email protected]

From the South Dates to Note

September for the Fellowcraft degree and another Master Mason degree possible in October. WB Jason continues an aggressive schedule for the growth of MN River Valley #6. Have you thought of wanting to help in the degree work? We are looking at booking not 1, not 2 but THREE more Lodges of Instruction for later this year, FC Degree instruction a Thursday in June, Master Mason Degree instruction a Saturday in early September, and finally in early November a Lodge of Instruction on openings, closings, and other work. This particular one could be in the new lodge!! More Social dates to note, Summer Picnic is Sunday July 21 at McLean Park in Savage. This is a change from past years, to be on a weekend rather than during the work week. Stay tuned for further details. Ever been to a Saints game? WB Gary Sankary has secured 20 tickets for the July 9th ball game in the Midway home park. If you are interested please contact Gary ASAP its first come first served. Gary says there will be tailgating beforehand! [email protected] PARADE DATES and PORK BURGER STAND June 23 Dan Patch Days Parade in Savage, our new location, we are part of the Chamber already, and have been welcomed with open arms by many in Savage. A good showing of brothers to prep and hand out the balloons is a great way of thanking the community and saying hello. July 26-28 Kolacky Days in Montgomery, food stand setup Thursday open thru Sunday. Parade on Sunday, many brothers are needed for this block of days. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Many brothers are in the parade for other groups so consider putting your time on the fire truck making kid’s smile with a balloon. Continued on the next page

OES Report Shakopee Chapter #90 met on March 21st. It was our last meeting of the year. We had election of Officers for the New Year. A talk was given on Julie Andrews and Barbra Streisand. They have been highly successful as singers and have both won best actress academy awards along with memorable and long movie careers. We also gave money to Job’s Daughter. On April 6th we had our installation ceremony for the upcoming year. Marie Rhodes was installed as Worthy Matron and Doug Rhodes was Worthy Patron. We had a nice turn out for this open installation. Our first new meeting on April 18th was cancelled because of the snow storm. Very strange, to have a late April meeting not take place because of this. We’ll try again next month with some fun things planned for the year. Submitted by: Brad Smith

Congratulations again to everyone, especially to James Eshleman for 60 years and Don Rieck for reaching 55 years of Masonry.

From the South, Continued July 31-Aug 4 Derby Days in Shakopee, Parade and Bingo Tent. We get visibility from both events. Look for signups. Both are easy, little or no prep work involved. B Don McNeil usually leads us here. Mid Aug LeSueur County Fair Pork Burger stand, Good fund raising and chance to give back to the 4H. May 1st a large contingent of brothers are going to visit Albert Pike Lodge, maybe to collect on a ‘lottery’ ticket from the early 1900’s they had issued. It will be interesting to hear their stories when they get back. Sorry no last minute joiners, we had to give them a number beforehand for dinner. Tim Pray Junior Warden [email protected]

Secretaries Report Greetings Brothers, it’s been a few years since I’ve written a Secretaries report for the Wayfarer. Trivia for you, when was the last time I did one? If you answered “Trick Question- Never” you’d be right. That changes with this edition. When I was Master of the lodge a few years ago I received many comments about the connection that brothers who for many reasons, were unable to come to Lodge but sincerely appreciated because of the Wayfarer and the news and information we shared about Minnesota River Valley. And for a bunch of reasons, which when looked at collectively really don’t amount to anything, sort of the equivalent of taking one’s self of the line up in baseball game for a hangnail, I haven’t published anything. That stops today. (I hope) Look for a regular secretary’s column here. So what’s been going on in your Lodge from the Secretaries desk? It seems the hot topic this year at Lodge is membership. And this year it’s a great discussion. Brothers there’s the very real chance that we could raise 12 new Master Masons in 2013. That’s a huge number for us. In 2012 we raised 6; we had 5 brothers participate in the One Day in January. We have 5 more candidates at various degrees and a new petition coming in at our May meeting. Good news is we have some really enthusiastic guys coming in, our future is looking bright. Speaking of which, Saturday morning May 18 we’ll be doing our Spring Master Mason degree. If you haven’t been to one in a while we would love to see you there. What a great way to come back to Lodge, watching the most sublime of our ceremonies. Who are you? One way to get that question answered is to sport a new name badge! We are updating the MNRV name badges to reflect our new home in Savage Minnesota. If you’re interested in a badge please send me an email at [email protected]. Include your name as you want it to appear and what style you would like, we have a pocket insert version and a magnetic back version. The cost is $7.00.

On Wednesday May 1 about a dozen brothers are going to visit Albert Pike lodge in Hopkins MN. At a recent back room Lodge cleaning I found a letter from Albert Pike with a couple raffle tickets and a letter of introduction. We thought we’d go to the lodge see if we won anything. Considering the letter is dated 1909 I hope our prize is still there. Summer is fast approaching which means MNRV is getting into our “busy” season with parades, food booth appearances and so forth. Lots of stuff to keep a brother busy and engaged. New this year, Worshipful Master Jason has called several work days on the new lodge building. I’m sure there will be more about that to come. There you go brothers, the first Secretaries report of my term. Look for many more to come and more importantly, I look forward to seeing you in lodge. WB Gary Sankary Secretary [email protected]

From the Chaplin Brethren of Minnesota River Valley Lodge 6: A recent communication reminded me of a discussion with my son some 10 years back - it started with a heart stopping comment / revelation - "When I need you Most but".. There is much to this story; however what is important is the message. Many times we are needed most by family, friends, and strangers but so caught up in our "personal busy" that we forget about others and their needs! I ask our brother's to be mindful of certain principle tenets of Masons - being friendship, morality and brotherly love. My challenge, find time to be less busy, and an opportunity to visit with a brother of our lodge with whom you have not met, or especially, whom is unable to attend for whatever reason. Let us go in peace and harmony Brother Michael Riker Chaplin – [email protected]

“Communication from the West” April 29, 2012

Brethren, As always, it is my hope that all are doing well and continue daily for self-improvement in our personal, professional and Masonic lives. “Seek more light daily.” I will take this opportunity to announce formally that the “Summer Picnic” is locked in and coming together very nicely. Here is the information thus far: Location: McCann Park

7125 South Park Drive (Intersection of Louisiana Ave.)

Savage, MN Date: July 21, 2013 Time: 2 PM – 7 PM This is slated as a family event so plan to attend now in advance, mark your calendars and round up the kids. This will be a great opportunity to get your spouse, significant other, best friend(s) and children involved and have a great time. As more information come together in the near future we will keep you all posted. We are looking for ideas on games, competitions, activities and pulling together the meal. I would like to thank those that have offered to assist with this event and together we will have a wonderful picnic. Keep your tools at the ready, for the “Master Architect” will find good work for you to do. The key is to be willing, observant and prepared. May your God bless you Brethren! As Always, Ken Betterton, Senior Warden, MRVL#6 [email protected] 952-292-9054

Adult Learning When I was a child I learned like a child. Being short on experience and long on unshaped mind, my teachers replied heavily on rote learning, force feeding information into my brain until such time as I could think logically and arrange ideas for myself. As an adult I rebel and refuse to learn rote facts for the sake of learning facts. I struggle with learning new pieces of ritual word by word. For me formal education encourages the onset of a nap. I have recently been told that Adult Learning is comprised of:

10% Formal Learning, 20% Mentoring, and 70% On-the-Job training.

If this were a speech I would repeat those last three lines for effect. I invite you to review them and speculate where I am going. I suggest that our proficiency lectures are masonicly our formal learning; the year of mentoring is a time of encouragement and directed growth; and the remaining learning is what we gain through our own endeavors and the interaction with like-minded brethren. We need the formal learning of the lectures as a basis of all Masonic learning and to be able to prove ourselves as a member of the Lodge when traveling. The mentoring encourages the continuance of that learning and interaction with other Masons. The On-the-Job learning comes as we learn to apply the meaning of Masonic symbols to our lives, shaping our attitudes and regulating our actions. To our Mentors A mentor is someone whose hindsight can become your foresight. - from last week's fortune cookie If it is true that mentoring is 20% of adult learning and if it is also true that we Masonicly use mentoring as the bridge between the formal learning and the On-the-Job learning in life, then Mentoring is a critical link to our future.
