Contemplation on the Third Sunday of the

Great Lent - Adoration of the Holy Cross

We all know, of course, that the life-giving

cross is our main holy object, our main spiritual

treasure. And the Church glorifies this holy object

in a special manner. During the course of the entire

year, on Wednesdays and Fridays, in Church hymns

and practically on every Sunday, the Cross is

glorified. It is brought out gloriously FOUR times

during the year for veneration: in the summer, on

the first of August [old style], we commemorate the

procession of the Cross in Constantinople, on the

14/27th of September we commemorate the main

feast, the triumphant elevation of the Cross; we

commemorate the Cross also a day before the Great

Feast of Theophany when we celebrate the Baptism

of the Lord, also called Epiphany, words which

mean the Appearance of God, and this Feast is also

called the Enlightenment. And, finally, we glorify

The Life Giving Cross in the middle of the Great

Lent, on the Third Sunday of the Great Lent. Do

you see the irony?

These are feasts that celebrate the Precious

Cross. We wear crosses. We put them in our houses. We adorn our temples with them (inside and out; on our

doors and the very top of our cupolas). We trace its image over our bodies throughout the day. Have you ever

realized how that looks? An instrument of torture and humiliation, perfected by pagans, has become the sign of

our faith. A degrading and wicked instrument of death is, according to the Hymns of Church,

the “unconquerable trophy of the true faith, door to paradise, succor of the faithful, and barricade set about

the Church” (Vespers stichera).

This is something that should wake us from our slumber. This is something so jolting – but so

fundamentally true – that it should force us to see things not through the eyes of the fallen world, but through

the eyes of “true seeing”. Christ brought sight to the blind during his earthly ministry. Through contemplation

of the Cross, He will bring spiritual sight, true sight, to all of us (and in seeing, we will follow Him through the

Cross, to Paradise).

The Cross is anathema to the world – it does not understand the Passion. It does not understand sacrifice.

It only understands and seeks the comfort and pleasure of today and the foreseeable future. The world sees

through the fallen eyes of Adam. Adam hoped to find pleasure in the beautiful fruit of the Tree, but found only

bitterness (a beautiful tree brought Him only bitterness). The true-seeing man seeks true pleasure today and

forever, and finds it in the Cross (a horrific Cross brings him everlasting joy). The promises of worldly pleasure

are empty, but the promise of the Cross is already being fulfilled.

Yes, there is great irony in the Cross, but it is only because the Truth is so out of synch with the millennia

of lies that we have told in our falleness. It is the one piece of Order and Truth in a world of chaos.

- In the chaos of infantry battles, the king would plant his banner so that his scattered troops would rally

around him. It was a single point of stability in the chaos of battle. Rallying to it and around it was the

only hope of survival for the individual soldier and for the force at large. The Cross is planted in this

world so that we might rally to it. We are not meant to struggle alone, but together (working together,

not individual bravery or skill is the key to military success). And not just around any cause, but around

the True King‟s banner: the Precious and Life-giving Cross.

- The taste of Fruit of the Tree was sweet, brought illness; the taste of the Cross is bitter, but brings

healing to all. While this is jarring, it accords with our experience. Medicine is bitter (or it used to be);

shots hurt. Treatment can be long and excruciating. More so because it does not always work.

But know this: the medical treatment of the Cross can be difficult, but its success is sure. The Cross brings

healing to all. Through the Cross, Christ took on the sins of the world – through His Cross, we are healed of all

our diseases and infirmities and made worthy to grow in unity with Him and one another. He is the Great

Physician, and the love of the Cross is the medicine of salvation.

Do not be ashamed of Our Lord. Do not be ashamed of His Cross. Deny yourself. Pick up your cross

and follow Him. Follow Him to eternal health and everlasting joy. This is the way of Christ. This is the

way to victory.

КРСТУ ТВОМЕ КЛАЊАМО СЕ ВЛАДИКO

Ево већ трећа недеља часнога поста је иза нас. Већ пуне три недеље ми се постом и молитвом спремамо за дочек

највећег и најрадоснијег празника наше Цркве – Васкрсења Христовог. Сва наша вера и целокупно наше

исповедање темељи се на тој великој тајни Христове победе над смрћу, о чему сведочи свети Павле највећи

апостол наше Цркве риечима да Христос није устао из мртвих узалуд је и вера наша узалуд је и проповедање

наше. Али ми занмо да је Он, продужава даље апостол, првина из мртвих и тиме дао наду на васкрсење свакоме

који верује у Њега. Због тога је подвиг нашег поста веома битан и важан, јер нас чини духовно бољим, крепи наше душевне сили, ојачава нашу веру и води нас достојном сусрету са Васкрслим Господом.

Предстојећа света недеља је посебна, јер је посвећена спасоносном знамењу часног и животворнога крста

Христовог. Због тога се она и назива крстопоклона. Часни крст је одувек био предмет посебног поштовања

православних људи и његова појава је тесно повезана са целокупном историјом наше Цркве. Природно се намеће

питање у чему је тајна његове чудотворне и благодатне силе? Целокупна тајна крста откривена је у спасоносном

догађају Васкрсења Христовог. Управо је својим Васкрсењем Христос осветио сибол крста и даровао му нову

спасоносну силу – силу победе и вечнога живота. Све до Његовог распећа крст је био оруђе срама, јер су највеће

разбојнике кажњавали распињањем на њему. Ту болну и срамотну праксу распињања Римљани су примењивали

само за робове и на све који по своме пореклу нису били римљани. Али распећем Христовим крст је постао

знамење победе и вечне славе. О томе нам свједочи и црквена песма која се пева на Светој Литургији - Крсту

твоме клањамо се Владико и свето Васкрсење твоје певамо и славимо. Поклањајући се крсту ми славимо

твоје Васкрсење, прослављамо победу свих нас, победу која је управо знамењем крста била јављена човечанству.

Крст Христов је победно знамење Цркве Христове, јер се њиме побеђују видљиви и невидљиви непријатељи. О

томе нас уверава апостол Павле који каже да је крст Христов божанствено оруђе са којим се прогони сваки враг и

непријатељ (!. Кор. 18). Поставља се питање због чега Крст и крсно знамење имају такву силну моћ против

демонских сила? Зато што Крст свједочи сатани о великој сили Божијој – сили смирења. Ђаво је отпао од Бога

кроз гордост, а Господ је победио ђавола својим смирењем. Знамење крста, на коме је Господ пројавио своје

велико смирење и тим самим победио вражију силу, за ђавола су просто не подношљиви. Крст је почетак и крај

нашега спасења. Без крста ми нисмо хришћани, нисмо чланови Цркве Христове, нисмо деца Божија. За крст смо

рођени, ради крста ми живимо и крстом и умиремо. А умирући са крстом ми умиремо са вером на живот вечни.

По примеру Божијем сви ми смо позвани да

достојно носимо свој овоземаљски крст који

нам се даје. Али чињеница је драга браћо и

сестре да је човечанство данас занемарило

врлински, јеванђелски живот и уместо њега

узело лажни живот по телесним жељама, који

нас временом потпуно удаљује од Бога и закона

Божијег. Човек је заборавио спасоносну жртву

коју је Бог учинио искључиво ради његовог

спасења. Поруге, пљувања, бичевање и на крају

распеће Христос трпи искључиво ради нас и

ради искупљења наших сагрешења. А заузврат

шта му ми дајемо? Достојно ношење свога крста

или смо свој крст заменили овоземаљским

насладама. Истинска љубав и преданост према

Господу састоји се у стрпљивом подношењу

свих невоља и овоземаљски искушења. Јер као

што је после срамног распећа на крсту,

васкрсењем дошла спасоносна победа, тако и

свако наше достојно ношење крста у тешким

моментима нашега живота бива награђено свемогућим Господом. Живећи врлинским јеванђелским животом,

молитвом и постом, ми достојно носимо свој крст и на тај начин достижемо највећи степен јеванђелског живота,

степен у којем душа созерцава неизрециву светлост лица Божијег.

Православни човек такође треба да сазна да се пут у Царство небеско достиже борбом, одрицањем од самога себе,

својих прохтева и смиреним ношењем страдања, Тај пут нам је заповедио сам Господ, о чему сведочи апостол

Петар, који каже да је Христос оставио нама Свој пример, да следујемо стопама Његовим (Петар 2. 21) Ако ми

себе сматрамо његовим ученицима, онда смо дужни да усмеримо свој пут по Његовим стопама, да разапнемо

своје тело са страстима и похотама. Јер како свједочи свети Григорије Палама – сваки човјек који је себе разапео

на крсту, нема побуде према греху. Због тога је битно попети се на висину крста, распети своје страстно тело. А

свети оци говоре да разапети се на крсту значи борити се против страсти и избегавати саблазан.

Идући по крстноме путу, ми можемо спознати плодове смиреног ношења свога крста. То је побједа над

ђаволским искушењима, исцељење од душевних и телесних болести, очишћење од грехова, обретење душевнога

мира. Окусивши плодове крста, ми радосно са апостолом Павлом можемо клицати – “не живим више ја, него

Христос у мени”!

Потрудимо се да нашом добровољном жртвом преко молитве и поста ослободимо приступ за усељење Божанске

благодати у нас, без које не можемо чинити никаква добра. Нека нам у томе помогне и сила Часног и

Животворнога Крста Господњег, да живимо свето, честито и праведно, онако како то Бог очекује од нас.

О пречасни и животворни крсте Господњи помажи нам увијек са Пресветом Дјевом Богородицом и свима

Third Sunday of Great Lent

Adoration of the Holy Cross We are approaching the third Sunday of Great Lent when the

Orthodox Church commemorates the Precious and Life-Giving

Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Divine Liturgy

includes a special veneration of the Cross, which prepares the

faithful for the commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy

Week.

Let's reflect for a moment on the Crucifixion and its meaning. Jesus

Christ died for our sins which was done because "God so loved the

world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in

him shall not perish but have eternal life" John 3:16. God's love for

us - our opportunity for eternal life - our Salvation and the hope of

living in God's kingdom are all because Jesus died on the Cross. As

we venerate the Cross this Sunday, let us especially think about the

meaning of the Cross and ask ...how much do we love God? ...how

much do we love our Church which represents Christ? ...how much

do we love God for all that he provides for us? Do we love him

enough to sacrifice of our Time, Talents and Treasures?

Kontakion from the third Sunday of Great Lent No longer does the flaming sword guard the gate of Eden, for a marvelous quenching is come upon it, even the

Tree of the Cross. The sting has been taken from death, and the victory from Hades. And, You, my Savior, has

appeared unto those in Hades saying: Enter again into Paradise.

Приближавамо се трећој Недељи Великог Поста када Правослвна Црква слави Свети и Живоносни крст

Господњи. Света Литургија садржи посебно слављење Крста , које припрема верне за Распеће , кога се

сећамо током задље недеље Поста.

Шта Распеће Христово значи за нас? Господ Исус Христос је умро за наше грехе јер" Господ тако заволе

свет да даде свој Јединородног Сина , да ко год у поверује у Њега не умре нега да има живот вечни" ЈН

3:16. Божија Љубав за нас - шанса за вечни живот - наше Спасење и нада за живот у Божијем царству , је

могућа само зато што је Господ Исус умро за нас на Крсту.

И док целивамо Крст ове Недеље , морамо да се запитамо шта Крст значи за нас ... и колико волимо

Господа? Kолико волимо нашу Цркву која преставља Христа? Колико волимо Бога који нам све даје?

Да ли га волимо довољно да би даривали наше Време , таленте и новац?

Врата рајска више нису чувана пламеним мачем , јер би угашен росом Крсног дрвета. Жаока смрти и

победа Ада се уништи. И ти , Господе , када си се појавио онума који су били у Аду, рекао си: Уђите

поново у Рај.

- Great Thursday – 09 am - Divine Liturgy - On Holy Thursday, we celebrate a Vesperal Liturgy

that is sometimes called the Liturgy of the Mystical Supper. At this time, we commemorate the Last

Supper and enter into the eternal mystery of it, which is the Eucharist.

encounter Christ Crucified. This is one of the most powerful services in all of the Holy week.

hear the hymns of the previous evening and find Jesus hanging on the Cross for our salvation

taking down of the Lord„s body from the Cross and His entombment by the Nobel Joseph immediately

followed by the ―Service of Lamentation, this Matins for Holy Saturday shows us that our

Blessing of Homes with Holy Water The sanctification of the home takes place with prayer and the sprinkling

of holy water. The priest, at this annual visit, asks God to have mercy on

the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill if with every blessing. Everyone

of the house, prays together for the living family members. They all sing the hymn of salvation and process from room to

room while the priest blesses the house.
