4. Leading Companies in the Wastewater Treatment &

Recovery Systems Market

4.1 Severn Trent Services

Severn Trent Plc. – based in Fort Washington, Pa., USA. Severn Trent Services is an

environmental services business with a (£1.7bn) turnover (2011) employing almost 14,000 people

in the UK, the USA and Europe.

Severn Trent was formed in 1974 as a regional, state-owned water authority in the UK. Following

privatisation by the UK government in 1989, Severn Trent set to build a products and services

business which involved acquisitions in the US and UK.

•  Severn Trent Water – Is the UK arm and founding member, looking after 528 WWTW and

spending over £500m in the UK wastewater market per annum. Recent external contracts

include; April 2011 Severn Trent awarded a £62m, 5 year maintenance contract to May Gurney

to maintain sewerage services in their east region. The initial contract period is five years, with

an option to extend for a further five years.

•  Severn Trent Water International (STWI) is the global operating and management arm of

Severn Trent Plc. Today STWI companies provide management and consultancy services to

the water, wastewater and environmental industries globally.

Examples of current enterprise;

• US – manages 400 WWTW serving 2m people across 21 states

• Mexico – Mexico City drinking water and wastewater services for 2.2m people

• Belgium - STWI is the industrial partner and shareholder of Aquafin and have jointly built 40

WWTW

6. Expert Opinion

6.1 Yorkshire Water

Yorkshire Water (YW) is based in the north of England and is the 4th

largest wastewater service

provider in the UK, owning and maintaining 624 WWTW across the Yorkshire area.

YW are expected to spend a total of £1.7bn ($2.72bn) in the AMP 4 & AMP 5 period (2005-2015)

onwastewater projects improvements / new builds.

Between 2006-2009 YW completed a £44m overhaul of their wastewater treatment plant in Esholt

(Nr Bradford, West Yorks’) the project included a complete redevelopment of the plant, which

increased capacity to allow treatment of up to 3,240 litres per second of wastewater and supports

750,000 people in the Bradford and North Leeds area.

J ohn Bond works for YW and is a spokesman for the Esholt Plant.

6.1.1 Is the Strategy for Wastewater Plants to Become Self-Sufficient in

Energy?Visiongain - From research I understand that there is currently a new scheme to create a THP

(Thermal Hydrolysis Process) system at Esholt to generate power to run the plant, with an aim to

be 100% self-sufficient by 2035. Is this the direction that YW is heading – i.e. creating own energy

at every wastewater production plant?

John Bond - No, it is neither technically nor economically feasible to do this at this stage we have

600+ WWTW; and many are too small for economies of scale to apply. We base our investment

decisions on whole life cost; so this assessment is always open to review as technology costs andenergy prices vary. This decision is also affected by other asset related decisions, including the

type of the current assets installed, their age and condition, changing environmental standards,

etc.

However, most of our electricity use is at our larger sites, and these sites often do offer

opportunities for energy generation. Our direction is to increase the amount of renewable energy

we generate significantly, but it is unlikely in the short/medium term to include energy generation at

every site. This is a trend that will spread to other companies both in the UK and Abroad.
