Heavily armed fight-ers launched two of the biggest insurgent attacks in Afghanistan in years, culminat-ing early Tuesday with six suicide bombers charging the second-largest U.S. base. An earlier ambush killed 10 French troops in the deadliest militant assault since 2005.

The French soldiers — including paratroop-ers and a member of the Foreign Legion — were on a reconnaissance mission in the moun-tains of Surobi, a mili-tant redoubt 30 miles east of the Afghan capi-tal, Kabul, when they were ambushed Monday afternoon.

A group of children rocking out to kid-die tracks at a kindergarten disco party were told to turn down the tunes or face a shutdown of their party by noise control officials who raided the soiree. The raid — called “absurd” by one teacher — happened Friday at One Tree Hill Kindergarten in Auckland, New Zealand. As parents and children blasted the theme song from “Bob the Builder” and the “Chicken Dance,” an irate neighbor spoiled the fun by calling noise control. Teacher Jenny Sker-ritt said there was some noise, but not enough to disturb several babies, who snoozed through it all.

Babies in a hurry made for a memora-ble Monday morning for firefighters in and around Rochester, N.Y., who were

summoned three times to deliver infants in cars. Just after

5 a.m. Monday, a woman gave bir th in a car

alongside a road in Brighton. Two hours later, firefighters in Perinton delivered a baby girl in a car

that had pulled into the parking lot of their

fire station while in route to the hospital. The third birth

occurred in Rochester; details weren’t available. Fire officials noted that fire-fighters don’t often deliver babies — let alone three times in the same region in one morning.

An 85-year-old Springhill Township, Pa., woman went for her gun and bust-

ed a would-be burglar inside her home and then forced him to call police while she kept him in her sight, police said. “I just walked right on past him to the bedroom and got my gun,” Leda Smith said. After the 17-year-old boy called

911, Smith kept holding the gun on him until state police arrived. “It was exciting,” Smith said. “I just hope I broke up the [burglary] ring, because they have been hitting a lot of places around here.”

Wholesale inflation soared in July, leaving prices rising at the fastest pace in nearly three decades.

But the price spikes seen else-where in July prompted concerns that the prolonged surge in energy was beginning to show up more broadly throughout the economy, and that while prices may rise quickly, they tend to come back down much more slowly.

The Labor Department reported Tuesday that wholesale prices shot up 1.2 percent in July, pushed higher by rising costs for energy and a vari-ety of other products from motor vehicles to plastic goods.

The increase was more than twice the 0.5 percent gain that economists expected and left pric-es rising over the past 12 months by 9.8 percent. That marked the biggest annual increase since the 12 months ending in June 1981, a

AARP, the national advocacy group for older Americans, is being accused of age discrimina-tion. Bonita Brady, a 63-year-old from Michigan, says the group passed her over for a series of jobs because she was too old, despite excellent job reviews.

She joined AARP in Chicago in 1996 as a health representative. She also worked for AARP in Washing-ton before moving to the Lansing office in 2007.

Brady says she lost her job in a reorganization and was passed over for nine vacancies. She sued last week in federal court in Mich-igan and is seeking more than $25,000.

Democratic pres-idential candidate Barack Obama gave his clearest signal yet that he has settled on a running mate when he announced Tuesday he would appear Saturday in this city where he launched his campaign.

Presumably, the running mate will appear with Obama when he shows up in front of the former state Capitol where Abraham Lincoln once served. The last time Obama appeared there, he announced he was running for president.

The Obama camp’s announce-ment said only that the Illinois senator would begin his trip to the party’s national convention at the Saturday event. The Democratic National Convention begins Mon-day in Denver.

But the candidate and his aides said nothing explicit about his deci-sion on a running mate.

Those believed to be on Obama’s short list also were keeping mum. Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, rumored as a possible choice, pro-fessed no inside knowledge of when word would come.

nation, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clin-ton of New York, was seen by some Democrats as a longshot pick.

Only Obama; his wife, Michelle; a handful of his most senior advis-ers and his two-member search committee know for certain who has been vetted and discussed. Staffers were already in place to support Obama’s pick, including more than a dozen seasoned oper-atives who have set up shop in the campaign’s Chicago headquarters.

Russia took the first steps toward a troop pullback from Georgia on Tuesday — but at the same time paraded blindfolded and bound Georgian prisoners on armored vehicles and seized four U.S. Humvees.

The five protesters were taken away by security shortly before mid-night for displaying the banner, the group said. The protesters’ where-abouts were unknown.

A suicide bomb-er drove a car full of explosives into a line of applicants at an Algerian police academy Tuesday, killing at least 43 people in the deadliest ter-ror attack to jolt this energy-rich U.S. ally since the 1990s.

Bodies covered with blankets lay amid rubble on the ground. The carcass of a charred car was on its side, its doors blown outward.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but an al-Qaeda affil-iate previously said it was behind a series of bombings over the past two years in this North African nation.

Violence has dramatically increased since 2006, when Alge-ria’s last big extremist group left over from a quieted insurgency in the 1990s renamed itself al-Qaeda in Islamic North Africa and joined Osama bin Laden’s network.

“Today’s bombing is very sym-bolic: A pillar of the regime has been hit,” said Khadija Mohsen-Finan, head of the North Africa program at think-tank IFRI. “I don’t recall anything as big since the decade of the civil war.”

Pakistanis have been urging the government to set aside politi-cal bickering and tackle extremist violence and the economic down-turn — challenges underscored Tuesday by a bombing outside a hospital and new battles between the army and militants.

But, as it has for months, the issue of judges revealed itself as a severe strain in the alliance between the two main parties that won Feb-ruary parliamentary elections after running against Musharraf.

City officials cut the ribbon Monday on the $63 million Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School.

The renovation of the former vocational school aims to capital-ize on the city’s construction boom. D.C. officials say it will offer pro-grams for students interested in specific trades and for college-bound students.

The renovated building is certi-fied by the Green Building Council and includes a geothermal energy system and a solar power compo-nent.

Officials say the design of the school is also educational. For exam-ple, ceiling pipes are exposed and color-coded so students can follow their paths.

In grand fashion, Washington bade farewell Tuesday to Leonard B. “Bud” Doggett Jr., a humble Irish-man who became a parking lot magnate and D.C. power broker whose generosity left an indelible mark on the region’s law enforce-ment community.

Hundreds of police officers and firefighters from across the region joined captains of industry and Washington’s political elite in a regal salute to Doggett, 87, who died Aug. 13. During Tuesday morning’s funeral service at downtown D.C.’s St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dog-gett was remembered as a public steward who shunned publicity.

Prince George’s Police Cpl. Anthony M. Walker, died in 2003.

“Mr. Doggett was our angel here on Earth,” Walker said. “Now he’s our angel from above. He’ll always be here with us.”

Doggett’s wife, Cherrie W. Dog-gett, said in a eulogy that friends, family, love and generosity formed the tapestry of her husband’s life.

“One of his greatest legacies was Heroes Inc., but he didn’t want to talk about it,” she said. The families of fall-en officers, she said, “were a part of his family, and he was connected by the loving concern of each and every one of his Heroes families.”

Doggett was president and chief executive of Doggett Enterprises, the parent corporation of Doggett’s Parking, which was founded by his parents in 1926. For decades, he was one of the city’s most power-ful businessmen.

Among the politicians in atten-dance were D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md. Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier and chiefs from neigh-boring counties also paid their respects. “My police department belongs to Bud Doggett today, as it does every day,” Lanier said.

| Maryland Con-gressman Chris Van Hollen says he supports another fiscal relief package to help boost struggling state econo-mies like Maryland’s.

Van Hollen says Maryland has been hit hard by the nation’s recent economic downturn. He’s citing a new report by the American Federa-tion of State, County and Municipal Employees as evidence that Maryland needs an economic boost.

A drop-off in tax collections could lead to a $200 million bud-get shortfall before the end of the fis-cal year.

Van Hollen, a Democrat, says he’s hoping for a bipartisan effort

to bring more economic aid to the nation’s families.

Leonardo DiCaprio has a Red Mango yogurt machine in his office. Paris Hilton and Lind-say Lohan have been photographed clutching Pinkberry yogurt cups while ducking the paparazzi.

Frozen yogurt, trendy dur-ing the 1980s and early ’90s, has made a comeback — but this time with an edge. Companies selling the soft stuff are opening stores with hip decor and pulsating music that draw a young crowd. Celebri-ty bloggers like Perez Hilton have posted pictures of young Holly-wood stars spooning yogurt into their mouths.

Chains hope to cash in on the buzz celebrity clientele have created

The question for Pinkberry, Red Mango and the rest of this new generation of yogurt purveyors is whether they’ll be able to grow into national brands — especially since their target market is known for having fickle tastes and a short attention span.

Moreover, the industry is already getting crowded, raising the possi-bility of a shakeout at some point. In Los Angeles, consumers can now choose from chains such as Snow-berry, Roseberry, Kiwiberri, Yogurt-land, Yogurberry and IceBerry.

The trend toward healthy eat-ing might be a key to the longevity of the new frozen yogurt chains. Executives from both chains believe they can make it nationally; they say they are inundated with requests from potential franchisees.

General Dynamics Corp. said Tuesday it will buy Jet Aviation for about $2.25 billion in cash, part of the defense contrac-tor’s push to expand its private civilian jet business and tap into robust demand for luxury planes overseas.

With the purchase, Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics pairs its existing private aircraft maker, Gulfstream, with Jet Aviation’s global network of maintenance and service centers that can fix planes and outfit them with custom fea-tures for wealthy customers or cash-rich governments. While General Dynamics is perhaps best known for its military equipment, it has sig-nificantly expanded its aerospace unit in recent years.

A pile of pretty Olympic medal boxes. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin are bringing home more loot, including a gorgeous gold of Johnson’s very own.

“It just shows how strong we are,” said Liukin, who won five medals. “We went out there and showed we are the best. Going 1-2 in the all-around, that’s never been done by the United States. The Ameri-cans have never had 1-2 on beam before, either. And 2-3 on f loor isn’t too bad.

“It ’s def initely been a very successful Olympics for us.”

Games with, to me, the most perfect ending ever,” Johnson said, beaming as she tugged at the ribbon around her neck. “To finally get the gold medal ... on my very last routine meant the world to me.”

Johnson already had three silvers, including one from the all-around, in which Liukin won gold. Together, the women have won eight medals. Throw in Jonathan Horton’s silver on the high bar Tuesday night, and the Americans are leaving Beijing with 10 medals. That’s the most

Shawn Johnson scored 16.225 on beam and instantly knew it would win a medal.

The U.S. women’s water polo team will be playing for gold, taking on the Netherlands on Thursday, but will do so without Lauren Wenger. Wenger, the team’s most versatile player, broke her right hand in the closing minutes of a 9-8 semifinal victory over Australia. Brenda Villa scored three goals, including the winner with a minute left.

China’s men swept both events on the final day, with Zou Kai, left, win-

ning high bar and Li Xaiopeng win-ning parallel bars. China took all but one men’s event, the vault — in which

there was no Chinese finalist. China’s men won the team title, Yang Wei took the all-around, and the Chinese also took the still rings, pommel horse and floor exercise.

Rashid Ramzi won Tuesday’s 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 32.94 seconds on Tuesday to give Bahrain its first-ev-er Olympic track and field gold medal. “Bahrain is a small country, so winning gold is a very big thing,” Ramzi said.

Cejudo, the son of undocument-ed Mexican aliens who bypassed a college career to try to become an Olympian, assures the Unit-ed States of winning a freestyle wrestling gold for the ninth con-secutive Olympics in which it has competed.

Two years after U.S. coach Kevin Jackson called him the future of wrestling, the future became the present in a dazzling four-match flurry, making Cejudo the young-est American to win an Olympic wrestling gold medal.

“I always knew I was going to be here,” Cejudo said, his black-ened right eye a contrast to the gold medal he clutched ever so tightly. “I watched the Olympics as a kid and I knew I’d be here. It was tough. But it’s all worth it.”

It was theirs to lose, and they did.

Sanya Richards led in the stretch but was outrun to the finish in the 400 meters, Lolo Jones clipped the ninth of 10 barriers in the 100-meter hurdles Tuesday night — and just like that, two of America’s top run-ners let gold medals slip away.

Richards still won bronze, but a woman who has dominated the distance looked crushed during the medals ceremony. In the next race, Jones was in the lead and seemed to be pulling away when she hooked her right foot on the ninth hurdle and broke her stride, falling from first to seventh. The late blunder opened the door for teammate Dawn Harper to win the U.S. track team’s third gold medal of the games.

“You hit a hurdle about twice a year where it affects your race,” Jones said. “It’s just a shame that it happened on the biggest race of my life.”

Evander Holyfield apparently already had left the gym by the time Dzhakhon Kurbanov decided to bite his opponent’s shoulder in the evening’s final bout. Kurbanov was disqualified for biting Kazakhstan’s Yerkebulan Shynaliyev in the third round of their bout.

British-born Tunnicliffe, who moved to the United States with her family at the age of 12 and later became a citizen, had enough points in nine preliminary races to assure her at least a medal after the final, which counts double. Early in the race, it looked like she would be lucky to get silver.

Must be pretty discouraging to race Usain Bolt.

Not only are you likely to lose — he’ll beat you without even try-ing.

The Jamaican, who broke his own world record while winning the 100 gold medal in 9.69 seconds last weekend, eased up in the middle of the 200-meter semifinal Tues-day, figuring he was comfortably ahead and eas-ily on his way to earning a berth in the final.

As he slowed, he realized Shawn Crawford of the United States was coming at full speed, overtaking Bolt in an adja-cent lane. So, Bolt simply shifted gears and passed Crawford to cross the finish line first.

When asked about his gait, Bolt said: “I wouldn’t say ‘jogging.’ I’m just trying to get through to the next round. I didn’t know if he was run-ning. I just wanted to make sure I was in good position. I was looking at Crawford, and then I decided to look at the board to see where everybody else was.”

Sergio Aguero scored two second-half goals in seven minutes Tuesday and later set up another to lead Argentina to a 3-0 win over rival Brazil and into its second straight Olympic final.

Aguero opened the scoring for the defending champions by chesting in a left-side cross in the 52nd minute, then scored again from two meters on a cross from the right in the 58th. Aguero also set up a 76th-minute penalty kick that was converted by Juan Roman Riquelme.

It was the first victory for Argen-tina against Brazil in three years.

It hadn’t beaten Brazil since a 3-1 victory in a World Cup qualifier in June 2005.

“It’s not a score you see every day when Brazil and Argentina play,”

Argentina coach Sergio Batista said. “Argentina had a great match, with intelligence and personality.”

Argentina will face Nigeria in the gold medal final late on Fri-day night.

Nigeria beat Belgium 4-1 on Tuesday behind two goals from Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi to advance to the final.

Ogbuke Obasi, who was 10 years old in 1996 when Nigeria won its first gold medal in soccer, said he knew this year’s squad could sur-prise people.

“When we came into the com-petition, we had the aim to win, but we never knew we were going to go all the way to the finals,” he said. “But we knew we had a team that can fight and compete for the competition.”

The U.S. women don’t need any extra motivation to try to win their fourth straight Olympic gold medal.

It doesn’t matter that they lost to their semifinal opponent Russia in the 2006 world championship. Nor that American-born and natu-ralized Russian Becky Hammon is on the other team. They just have one goal in mind — coming home with another gold medal.

“We’re two wins away,” said U.S. guard Kara Lawson after a 106-60 victory over South Korea on Tues-day night. “The thing that pops into everyone’s mind when you say Rus-sia is that the last time we played them, they denied the U.S. a chance to play for a gold medal in the 2006 world championships.”

“I’d actually pay to buy a ticket for that one.” — wouldn’t commit to a side when asked whether this year’s Olympic basketball team would beat the 1992 Dream Team, but he said it would be fun to watch.

“We cannot continue on this

The Mystics have had 10 coaches in 11 seasons. “I think my fans are getting fed up,” Johnson said. “I’m getting fed up.”

Ethan Albright is already on his own little NFL planet. He’s a long snapper. He has bright red hair and freckles. His sunscreen is SPF 85.

He doesn’t like night games because he’s usually in bed by 10 p.m. One of his claims to fame is that he was the lowest rated play-er in the Madden video game. His nickname — Red Snapper — is fab-ulous but hardly fearsome.

So, when his years of flawless, upside-down spirals to holders and punters was finally rewarded with a Pro Bowl spot in February, he did things his own way. Party time in Hawaii, hitting the clubs with the big stars of the league? Nope. He took his four children and turned the trip into a family vacation.

“I was changing diapers and in the kiddie pool,” Albright said. “I was on the beach at 5 in the morning and they were in bed by 6 at night. Fun trip. I liked everything.”

But a trip for six to Oahu can cost quite a bit. Sure, it would be just a blip for a player with a multimillion-

dollar signing bonus, but Albright plays for a veteran minimum salary — this year it is $850,000 — and he was able to break even on the trip only because the NFC came away with a win and the $40,000 bonus per player that accompanied it.

That said, Albright has no com-plaints whatsoever. Most people can only dream about earning his sal-ary, yet he gets that nice check for bending over a few times a game and performing a task that’s been part of his routine since his older brother — a punter — would make him go into a yard and snap the ball.

“I’ve done it since I was a kid, so I don’t think about the technique so much,” Albright said. “It’s just doing it. I’ve kind of got the muscle mem-ory in there.”

Car shoppers don’t have to give up cargo space and utility when they give up their gas-guz-zling sport utility vehicles.

They just need to look for a wagon — especially a small one like the 2009 Toyota Matrix, which is rated at 26 miles per gallon in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway.

These numbers make the four-cylinder Matrix the top-ranked wagon in gasoline mileage in the United States.

Revamped for 2009 with more powerful four-cylinder engines and an updated interior and exte-rior, the Matrix looks like a five-door wagon whose styling tries its darndest to look young and hip. The car has lower body kit pieces and an expressive lower front bumper area, like what you’d expect on a car that has been customized.

But the Matrix — sold in base, S and XRS trim — is more than looks.

The test Matrix neatly fit into compact parking spaces, and it squeezed around double-parked cars on small, congested city streets without fuss.

The electric power steering on the test car had a light feel, so it

profile tires, the test Matrix was quieter inside than expected, and the ride was a commendable com-bination of comfort and sure-footed fun. The exception was on rough roads with potholes when passen-gers were jolted.

In federal government crash test ratings, the Matrix earned five out of five stars for frontal crash protection for driver and front passenger.

In side crash testing, the Matrix received five out of five stars for pro-tection of the driver and four out of five stars for protection of the rear passenger.

Here’s betting you went to parochial or otherwise private schools, that you have at least a bachelor’s degree from one of the Seven Sisters col-leges, and that you are profession-ally employed and have a dog. Am I close? If so, ignore your head and follow your heart and get the car you really want, which is the BMW 330 convertible. And, yeah, red with the tan interior is okay.

I‘ve driven the Honda FCX hydro-gen fuel-cell vehicle. It’s a nice, albeit pricey, work in progress, a prototype. Amazing torque, very quiet, and, thankfully, styled to appeal more to car lovers than it is to science-project nerds. What’s interesting is the progress Honda and other car companies have made in downsizing the fuel stacks in hydrogen fuel-cell models with-out compromising power and per-formance.

Or you can get a flex-fuel Silverado

from Chevrolet, which also offers fuel efficiency in the form of cyl-inder deactivation — for example, running with four cylinders at slow speeds and under light loads and running with eight when extra power is needed.

The Smart car is smart for urban transportation. But, as you point out, in many ways it is more cute than it is smart.

I wish it did not make sense, Florida. But the evidence is that Americans clamor for fuel efficiency only when they are feeling pain at the pump. Vehicle miles traveled, demands for larger vehicles and more horsepower all increased astronomically when gasoline was cheap.

Philly’s Must-See TV Screen

This city best known to tourists for its historical sites and museums has a surprise new high-tech hit that is developing into a must-see attraction: a huge atrium wall in Philadelphia’s new-est and tallest skyscraper where a cast of dancers and acrobats seem to come to life.

“At first, it looks like a mural,” said Marilyn Overton, who traveled with her husband from the suburbs just to see the wall. “And then all of a sudden it’s moving.”

It’s a 25-foot-tall, 2,000-square-foot high-definition screen that, at times, mimics the wood-paneled wall of the main lobby of the Comcast Center, which opened in June.

Mostly by word of mouth, the enormous video installation has been drawing a growing stream of visitors to the 975-foot-tall tower, which owner Liberty Property Trust is hoping will become a destination a la New York’s Rockefeller Center.

“We are stunned by the reaction we have gotten,” said D’Arcy Rud-nay, senior vice president for corpo-rate communications at Comcast, headquartered in the building.

City tourism officials even added the Comcast Center to their Web site after both residents and tour-ists began asking for more infor-mation.

An ex-NFL player and his estranged wife, a former Dal-las Cowboys cheerleader and her actor brother, recent divorcees, a pair of Southern belles and fra-ternity brothers are among the 11 two-person teams hurrying for the finish line — and the $1 million grand prize — on the 13th edition of CBS’ “The Amazing Race.”

“I love the fraternity broth-ers because they’re so young and such a contrasting team,” host Phil Keoghan says. “One takes his time to think things out. The other one loves to rush and go at a million miles an hour. There’s definitely ten-sion between the two of them while they’re making decisions.”

Another team competing is geeky best friends Mark Yturral-de, 41, and Bill Hahler, 42. The Comic-Con treasurer and student aid administrator from San Diego have been pals for more than 20 years and have auditioned for “The Amazing Race” since the long-run-ning reality series’ third season. The superhero and gaming aficionados said they left their toys at home.

“We wanted to make sure that there wasn’t anything to prevent us

from putting that pack underneath the seat in front of us when we got on a plane,” said Hahler.

Married beekeepers Anita, 63, and Arthur Jones, 61, from Eugene, Ore., are the oldest — and most col-orful — team on this season of “The Amazing Race.” Among the self-described hippies’ mottos: “Don’t worry, be hippie.” They worked out in hopes of keeping up with the other teams. That’s a good idea, sonsider-ing Ken Greene, a former St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Chargers defensive back, 51, will race with his estranged wife, Tina.

Starting at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the 13th season of the Emmy-winning reality compe-tition (premiering Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. EDT) will follow the teams as they travel more than 30,000 miles in 23 days to countries such as Bolivia, Russia, India and Kazakhstan.

Executive producer Bertram van Munster promised the 13th season will include a series of firsts for the reality competition, including a memorable first-ever stop for “The Amazing Race” in Cambodia.

“They get so stuck,” said van Munster, “but they find so many fascinating solutions of how to get through everything. One of the things the teams do there is go to a real-life floating village. It’s insane.”

The New ‘Race’ Faces

Oh, the anticipation. Critics will have to wait until Sept. 2 to watch such scenes.

It’s a ‘90210’ No-Show

The drama has already begun with “90210,” which is giving TV critics the brushoff. Pre-broad-cast copies of the new CW series won’t be distributed to TV review-ers and reporters, the network said recently

Movie critics tend to get sus-picious when a new release skips

show pilots has lagged because of the 100-day Hollywood writers strike that ended in February and disrupted TV’s usual production schedule for the 2008-09 season. But it’s unusual for TV networks to withhold pilots for other reasons.

CW’s drama about two high schoolers from the Midwest who move to California and enroll in West Beverly Hills High School echoes the hit 1990s Fox drama whose cast included Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth.

review screenings, but CW said the move merely represents a “strategic marketing decision.”

“We’re not hiding anything” by declining to make the Sept. 2 debut episode of the “Beverly Hills 90210” spinoff available beforehand, according to a network statement. Instead, CW said, it’s “simply keep-ing a lid on ‘90210’ ... riding the curi-osity and anticipation into premiere night, and letting all our constitu-ents see it at the same time.”

Distribution of most new fall

Long-distance dating couple Aja Benton, 25, top, of Los Angeles and Ty White, 25, of Southfield, Mich., make up a team on the 13th edition of “The Amazing Race.”

Playing With Pigskin

Jasmine (Keke Palmer, right) is recruited by her uncle (Ice Cube) to play football.

Sometimes I wish I went to a real school, but it’s kind of like a give and take. I love doing my acting, and I’m not going to a real school. I’m sure there are a lot of people out

there that would love to do what I’m doing.

Keke’s been my nickname since I was little.

Best known for her break-out performance in “Akeelah and the Bee,” Keke Palmer has since enjoyed a deluge of work from TV shows and movie roles.

In her latest film, “The Long-shots,” she is reunited with Ice Cube, who gave Palmer her first movie role in “Barbershop 2.” She plays Jasmine Plummer, whose tal-ents as a quarterback are discov-ered and developed by her Uncle Curtis (Ice Cube). He recruits her to play on the local youth football

team, and soon they’re headed to the Pop Warner Super Bowl.

On the phone from New York, Palmer talks about working with Ice Cube and being a role model for girls.

It was with Ice Cube, and also that it was a true story. That drew me to the project. I never got a chance to do an actual story about a real per-son [before]. A lot of people think that “Akeelah and the Bee” was a true story, but it wasn’t.

I did get a chance to meet her, but it was after I had already done the movie. Thankfully, I was right on.

It was never a sport that I was inter-ested in. But after I got this movie, my coach told me that I was very athletic.

Yes, he did. It definitely was great to be working with him again, espe-cially since he gave me my first big break ever in “Barbershop 2.” I was very happy to do a movie that was just about him and me.

The latest actor to jump on the comic-movie-as-a-way-to-make-big-bucks train is Tom Cruise. He and filmmaker Sam Raimi are develop-ing “Sleeper,” based on the story of a hero who can’t feel pain.

Wilco hopes to have its seventh studio album out by spring 2009, frontman Jeff Tweedy told Albany, N.Y., radio station WAMC recently.

After opting for a highly perfor-mance-oriented recording approach on 2007’s “Sky Blue Sky,” Tweedy says he expects Wilco will “allow ourselves a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio, and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instru-ment. Last time around, it was more of a document.”

At recent live shows, Wilco has played two new songs: “One Wing” recalls the melancholy, slowly build-ing “Sky Blue Sky” closer “On and On and On,” while “Sunny Feeling” has a sly main riff in keeping with loose jams from the last album,

point in my life. They all served their purpose, and in that respect I’m proud of all of them.

“But as something that feels artistically in keeping with who I am today, I think that they are inevitably going to fall short of that as time goes on. I mean, they just don’t continue to mean the same things to me, and a new record is kind of where it’s at.”

Prior to the release of “Sky Blue Sky,” Tweedy said a number of unfinished songs from those ses-sions would potentially form the basis for the next album, but it is unknown whether they remain in consideration at this point.

Wilco wraps a summer North American tour on Sunday at San Francisco’s inaugural Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival. After a one-off Wilco festival gig in Ireland on Aug. 30, Tweedy will play four solo shows in Spain through Sept. 6 in Murcia.

such as “Walken.”Tweedy told WAMC he’s going

through a phase in which he “kinda hate[s]” all of Wilco’s six prior albums, because “none of them are a statement that I would be com-fortable making right now at this

Several medications are effective for treating depression; however, they takeweeks or months to achieve their full effects. NIMH is studying whether a drugcan cause a rapid antidepressant effect in patients with bipolar or unipolardepression. Understanding how this works may help us design betterantidepressants. The study will also see if the rapid antidepressant effects can besustained. The study is conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD.

Nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary short earlier this year, (8 p.m., Cinemax) fol-lows Salim Muhammad, who for more than 40 years has wheeled an ancient hand-cranked movie projector through the streets of Kolkata, India, screening thrown-away fragments of Bollywood movies for residents shut out of sold-out cinemas.

(9 p.m., PBS) looks at 2036 as a possible date for an asteroid collision with Earth.

What a joy it is to watch a talent competition unfold with-out phony tension, lame music and manufactured hissy fits. “Architec-ture School” (9 p.m., Sundance) fol-lows a class of Tulane University architecture students as they submit designs for affordable housing for a poor neighborhood in New Orleans, La. It’s no easy thing coming up with a three-bedroom, two-bath-room home that fits in 1,200 square feet and is affordable enough for low-income families. Katrina bat-tered the city, but many of its woes predate that catastrophe.

The young students exhibit all of the pride, hubris, insecurities, ambi-

studying. A genial jock has no idea why he’s in the class. And many of the students parrot academic jargon back at their patient professor, who continually prods them to think for themselves.

You get to watch these kids think. How often can you say that about a TV show?

Nobody’s “flipping” houses here. There are no “Million Dollar List-ings.” No faded celebrity plans to fly in for momentary hugs and an extreme makeover. The problems here are hard, and the stakes are real. “Architecture School” is a rare and rewarding series that poses tough questions to its subjects and to its viewers. When does “improve-ment” become an invasion? And when is “charm” just another word for squalor?

Good news, “Office” lovers! Michael Schur, one of the show’s writ-ers/producers, has extended his deal with the studio and will be there for another two years at least. Fact: Schur appears on the show as Dwight’s cousin Mose.

Aesop Rock is one of the big voices of experimental, underground hip-hop of the late ’90s — and so it stands to rea-

son that only more sophisti-cated listeners will be into his groove. Read: This isn’t exact-ly “Chicken Head.” Aesop’s

complex sampling and mastery of rhythm and rhyme make him a joy to listen to at home and even more fun to hear live. You, because you are lucky enough to live in this thriving metrop-olis, can do so this Wednesday at the 9:30 Club, where he’ll get a little help from Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz. Yak Ballz and Grayskul are the openers.

There’s no better way to say farewell to a baseball-filled sum-mer than with the

greatest baseball movie of all time. And I say that as someone who has seen “A League of Their Own” and “The Sandlot” enough times that,

were I to add up all the hours of my life “wasted” on those repeat viewings, I might become incredibly depressed about my own

mortality. Speaking of mortality, the greatest baseball movie of all time is the 1942 biopic “Pride of the Yankees,” about the life of baseball legend Lou Gehrig — and it’s showing at the Capitol Riverfront tonight.

Capitol Riverfront at New Jersey Avenue SE and Tingey Street SE; dusk, free; 202-465-7093. (Navy Yard)

Celebrate Obama’s VP pick at Hawk ’n’ Dove — and your birthday, if applicable.

Conventional HangoutsBring on the conven-

tions, already.Seriously. Anything to end the

flood of “Hey, guys, Obama’s going to pick a vice president soon!” arti-cles. The Democratic National Convention is taking over Denver (and the news agenda) next week, and thus will end the speculation about vice presidential candidates. And thus it is a cause for great jubi-lation.

Now, as with any such national event, people choose to celebrate it in different ways. If you want to watch the convention surrounded by people, you have restaurants and bars aplenty to pick from — this is, after all, D.C.’s Super Bowl. Well, not really. D.C.’s women’s Olympic gymnastics semi-final maybe. Any-

way, here are a few spots where you can sit, munch and watch Obama accept his nomination as he stands next to one of any number of non-

descript, elderly white men from battleground states.

If you want to be sure to see the Convention on television, head to

Hawk ’n’ Dove. You’ll also be sur-rounded by interns and free-flowing beer. This is the Capitol Hill water-ing hole to go to for an authentic D.C. experience, complete with wonky chatter and an uncomfort-ably sticky bar top.

For a classier experience, try Dupont Circle’s Mark and Orlando’s — a giant TV on the second floor will more than likely be showing the keynote speeches, and you can munch on the most delicious appe-tizer in D.C.: spicy chicken wings with blue cheese.

Of course, if you want to yell at the TV and eat pretzels out of a bag, the best place to watch the convention is in the comfort of your living room. Or, if you’re Michael Phelps, my liv-ing room.

Style tips from Trend Spotter |

Who says Daniel Craig is hot? |

To Amy Hobbs Harris, a dozen jars of strawberry preserves are worth $391 — the amount she estimates she’ll save in a year by canning the fruit herself.

Not that she normally would spend that much on jam. But the savings add up once she factors in other uses — giving them away as gifts, for example, or stirring the preserves into plain yogurt instead of buying pricier flavored cups.

Harris, 33, of Tipp City, Ohio, started canning for the first time last summer, putting her a bit ahead of a trend seen across the country: As food prices rise and the economy declines, more people are turning to home canning.

“I started canning to save money,” said Harris. “I really love the self-sufficiency of it — that I know where the produce started and what the process is.”

Harris, a literature professor who chronicles her efforts to pay off her credit card debt on her blog, My Daily Dollars, considers can-

More people, including Jenna Kagan of Maple Valley, Wash., right, are canning fruit at home to cut costs.

“It fits with what we’ve seen his-torically from the 1970s and even before then: When people tight-en their belts, they focus a little bit less on convenience items and convenience foods and focus a lit-tle bit more on staying home and making their own, whether you’re talking about food or fun,” Scher-zinger said.

Louise Johnson of Auburn, Maine, grew up tending her par-ents’ garden and has planted her own for several years. But she didn’t start canning her produce until this summer, when she no longer could stomach the thought of pay-ing higher prices for food packed with preservatives.

“The straw that broke the cam-el’s back was the economy,” said Johnson, a 33-year-old mother of three boys.

“But the underlying reason is healthier food — we’re tired of food that has tons of sodium, preserva-tives and all the nasty stuff they put in food that you don’t have to be eating.”

ning a frugal way to enjoy high-quality ingredients. Though she has a garden, most of what Harris cans comes from her local farm-ers market.

“Especially in the winter, when I go down in the basement to get the jars, it’s a nice feeling,” she said. “So

many things are unknown with the way food is produced that it feels really good to keep control of it.”

The trend is ref lected in the sales of the popular Ball canning jars and supplies, said Chris Scher-zinger, vice president of marketing for Jarden Home Brands, maker of

Unlike most New York rock outfits, the Walkmen don’t have a calling card — you can’t always pick their songs out of a lineup like you can with the Strokes or Interpol. Afton Lorraine Woodward digs into the atmospheric group’s new CD, “You & Me.” |

I would go with purple, and since your dress is dark, you probably should choose something equally as intense. It’s this year’s go-to color, so I don’t think you’ll have trouble finding something.

You can open your mind and enjoy one or two new experi-ences in a way you hadn’t anticipated. Someone close to you will lead the way.

Your deter-mination and perseverance will pre-vail. You can finish that project that has been stalled for too long.

It’s a good day to look for better uses for all your avail-able resources, including ready cash. Save now, spend later and seek great-er rewards.

It’s time to nip those rumors in the bud. You may want to go on a fact-finding mission of your own in order to uncover the truth.

Stick to the rules and don’t be tempted to take shortcuts, especially where questions of legality or safety are concerned.

You may have to combine professional ambition with social responsibility. You’ll receive

some important official information.Be fully

aware of your emotional needs at this time. Avoid any tendency to sacrifice yourself right now; hang on to your inner strength.

You would be wise to begin making plans for the coming weekend. Early preparation can assure you of the best possible time when the time comes.

You’ll derive a great deal of strength from the familiar and from those activities that are part of a regular routine.
