Principal’s Message
September and October have been two very busy months of learning for all our WWS students in a variety of engaging
and authentic learning experiences. As we move into November, we will have an opportunity to meet with families and students
to share and celebrate this learning during our Parent Teacher Meetings on Nov. 27th and 28th. We look forward to having you
visit us! In our newsletter this month you will also read information regarding the Parent and Student Portal which will open on
November 21, 2014. The portal will also provide access for students in Grades 4 to 9. On November 20, 2014 you will receive a
Synervoice message with a reminder that you will be receiving an "Access ID" letter in your child's November report card. This
is another way for you as the parent to connect with your child around their learning goals throughout the year.
I would also like to take a moment to extend a very BIG thank you to all our staff who also take the time to provide a
variety of learning experiences to our students “beyond” the classroom and outside the regular school day. These are the staff
who plan and organize activities such as our Intramurals, After School Sports, Leadership Activities, Boys Night, School Danc-
es and many more that we have planned throughout the year. These opportunities teach our students many skills that they will
use as they become respectful citizens in our community. My thanks to all of you for your dedication to our school community!!!!
As we move into the months of November and December I would like to highlight a few special calendar items:
On Monday November 10, 2014 we invite everyone to our Remembrance Day Service
starting at 10:30 a.m.
On Thursday November 13, 2014 we are hosting our Family Fun
with Food Event from 6:00-7:30. Information was sent home on
Monday Nov. 3, 2014.
December 4, 2014 will be Merchandise Bingo School Fundraiser.
We appreciate any support you are able to provide for this event
and we hope you will join us!
Thank you to all our parents and families for your support
with your child’s learning and all that we do to provide a
positive learning environment here at WWS. Proud Principal of WWS
Mrs. Juvonen
On behalf of ALL the STAFF, STUDENTS and COMMUNITY I
would like to extend a very sincere THANK YOU to the GRAND
MARAIS FAMILY FESTIVAL for donating the $971.25 for the cost
of the EAGLES LOGO on our new gym floor!!! Greatly Appreciat-
ed! We look forward to helping the committee plan the Grand
Marais Family Festival Events again this year in February 2015.

This month my students had fun learning about bats and are going to
be learning about birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. They are working very
hard on our reading.
Last month we worked very hard representing numbers in different
ways for example, pictures, words, tally markers, tens frames and number sentences.
My favorite part of my class this year is that all my students are eager and very enthusi-
astic to learn new things.
October was a super exciting month in Kindergarten! Everyone was very excited for Halloween to
arrive as we counted down the days. We had a wonderful time sharing treats together, showcasing our fan-
tastic costumes during the parade, and ended the day with our Amazing Halloween Race.
During the month we also had fun learning more about ourselves and our colours. A big thank you to
everyone who joined us on our colour days. It was great to see such school spirit!
As Remembrance Day approaches, we will be preparing for our service. We will be performing the
poem, “Little Poppy”. Also throughout the month of November, we will be learning about how to be peace-
makers and our community helpers!

In Grade 4/5 we are currently working on our class Newspapers. In Social Studies we are learn-
ing about living in Canada. We are studying all about our government. In math the students are learning
how to multiply by doubles. The students are getting ready to do a Remembrance Day presentation at our
school service on November 10th.
My class had a Halloween party in the morning on Halloween day and we watched a movie and
ate treats. In the afternoon we participated in our Eagle Day activity – The Amazing Halloween Race.

Mrs. Duguid’s class have been working on “We are Canadian” posters in Social
Studies which you can see in the front of their classroom. In Science they have been learning about plants, they
also started researching them on the computer and they have been watching their bean plant grow.
Mrs. Duguid has been a teacher for seven and a half years and during those years some things have
changed for teachers like a new reporting system (new report cards), UDL (Universal Design for Learning) and
technology so the kids are now able to use laptops for class.
In the grade two/three class they took a vote for their favorite class subject and there were two different
classes that they liked the most and they are gym (almost the whole class voted for gym) and art.

This month in the grade 5 and 6 classroom they will be answering their science-based, Big Ques-
tion: ‘’How diverse is life on earth, and how is it all connected?’’ Students have built portfolios of infor-
mation to use in their answers, and are tasked with showing what they know about this in any way they
want! Mr. Murray is really excited to see all the cool ideas they come up with! Assignment packages went
home on October 30th and projects are due on November 10th! After this we will begin to learn about life
in early Canada, including how and why Manitoba became the province it is!
Parents/guardians are encouraged to continue to visit our classroom web site often to see up-to-
date information on their learning, as well as assignment due dates and other tidbits, and to check their
child’s blogs!
When I asked the students to mention their favorite classes they said physical education, science
and math. The students had a great time during the Halloween activities, the school dance, and a movie.

November sees an exciting field trip for our Gr. 8s and 9s to the St. Boniface
Hospital’s Bio Lab. We will look at how to use DNA in forensics and look at hearts. Our Christmas concert is
also coming up soon – the band’s getting ready!
Our cross-country season went great – pretty good weather for a change. We had two top – 20 finish-
es at the elementary championships Luke and Anne Green and a 3rd, 4th, and 6th place finish from Tim Juvo-
nen, Logan Scott, and Cale Jonski at the junior high championships. See my website for lots of pictures.
This is the start of my 19th year teaching at Walter Whyte –long enough for me to be teaching children
of students I taught those first few years.
I taught for 3 and a half years at Sagkeeng First Nation and 1 and a half years at J.H Bruns Collegiate before
coming to Walter Whyte.

Jr. High intramurals was a great success with almost 100% of students participat-

Mr Ryz said that we have had a great start to the year in Language Arts. All classes are working through their
first novel study of the year, and we have been looking at the important parts of speech in our Sentence Building units.
The month of November will continue to be a busy one in all subject areas in his classroom. The Gr. 8s and 9s
will be going on a field trip on November 17th to the Biolab at St. Boniface Hospital. This will work our as a great addi-
tion to our study of cells and body systems in Gr. 8 Science.
Mr. Ryz has begun the planning for the annual ski/snowboard trip. We are selling items from the canteen as
well as running a firewood raffle (1 cord) to help offset the costs. The draw date for the firewood raffle has been extend-
ed to Friday, November 14th. Tickets are available at the school or at many of the local businesses. Special thanks to
Mrs. Merton for her help with the tickets, and to Gary Danwich (the Tree Whisperer) for the wood.

CROSS COUNTRY
BY: LOGAN SCOTT AND TIM JUVONEN
During this cross-country season we have had
some victories and some losses. The elementary runners
have had two runs which were located at Kilcona Park for the Milk Run. All of
them finished in the top 20 runners. The second run was at Grand Beach. All
the exact results will be posted on Mr. J’s website.
The junior high runners have had three meets which included the
Milk Run, Lower Fort Garry and Grand Beach for the championships.
Again, all the photos and results will be posted on the website.
On behalf of all the runners, we would like to thank Mr. J for all his
coaching and the time he took to help us practice.
Library News
The library has new books! So far this year there have been over 80 books purchased
for the library. A big thank you to the PAC for donating money so more books could be
bought. Also a big thank you for the donations of new books that keep coming in.
There will be another Book Fair this November. The money raised from this book fair
goes towards buying new books for all the students to read. Don’t forget to come in
and take a look. There will be a lot of choices and books make a great Christmas pre-
sent for family and teachers. Later in the month a letter and preview will be sent home.
Again this year we are collecting Campbell’s soup labels. We need the full label (UPC and front panel)
from the soup can. The labels are turned into points and books or other equipment can be bought for the
school. Thank you for your support.

RICKY’S RIDDLES
The firefly is not actually a fly, but a beetle
Butterflies taste food by standing on top of it! Their taste receptors are in their feet
unlike humans who have most on their tongue.
Humans get a little taller in space because there is no gravity pulling down on them
Sneezing with your eyes open is impossible.
The trickiest tongue twister in the English language is apparently "Sixth sick
sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick". Give it a try and see for yourself.
Rabbits and parrots can see behind themselves without even
moving their heads!
Our new Elkay water fountain is now installed!!
