Wairere School THE AROUND AND ABOUT OUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY 9 March 2016 It was lovely to share afternoon tea with a big group of parents last Friday. We hope you also used the time to talk with your child’s class teacher and had a look around the classrooms. For both the teachers and children it was great to have you here at school, and we would like to say thanks for joining us. Senior Constable Brett Otto, the Schools Community Police Officer, came to visit our school on Friday 26th Feb to talk about bus/van safety. Our bus/van monitors also had a session with him and discussed the safety issues for our drivers, and the need for students to adhere to the rules while travelling to and from school. As part of the discussion Constable Brett reiterated the need for all students to wear the yellow safety vests provided for schools. Some students have yet to be issued with a vest and this will be done this week. Parents please can you ensure that your child wears their vest each day. The vests are numbered and allocated to each child so that we are able to keep track of vests and return them to the owners if misplaced. Vests need to be returned at the end of the year. The photos say it all! Friday was our book character dress up day where we all had fun guessing who was who and then connecting them to a story. An ice block was given as a small prize to the best character dress up in each of the classrooms. Our Easter raffle is part of our school fundraising and we rely on families to donate an item towards this to make it a success. Items need to be by March 16th. Every family who brings an item will be in a draw for a bag of Easter Eggs. Tickets are being sold outside New World 22nd and 23rd March. Thank you to all those who have offered to help out.. Raffle Tickets are attached to this newsletter for you to sell. These need to be returned to school by March 23. The raffle will be drawn at 3.00pm on March 23rd. Our Friends of Wairere (FOW) are keen to have some new members to support the school, and help organise our various fundraising events. The FOW are our PTA equivalent which in its day was called the Wardville Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The original PTA were also an active group it seems; School records mention a raffle in 1968 that had a value of $2.50 for the box of groceries, with tickets selling for 50c each. We are sure some of you will also remember the themed cabarets with a sheriff session in the 1980s, and annual Galas held in the school grounds until 1973. While these particular events above are not on the FOW agenda, they would love some fundraising ideas and support from each family. The main aim is to ensure we are doing the best we can to provide the resources needed for our children at Wairere. Well Tiger Worms to be exact! Pohutukawa have now put their Worm Farm together, and they have been busy telling the other classes about collecting food to feed them. They have provided buckets for each classroom and will be collecting and feeding the worms each day. The students are all very knowledgeable about what food scraps are good to keep, and the particular scraps that are not to be put in the buckets. The compost and worm juice will be useful for Kowhai’s orchard and Totara’s gardens. You can bet there will be some bartering going on in time to come!

AROUND AND ABOUT OUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY 9 March 2016

It was lovely to share afternoon tea with a big group of parents last Friday.

Every family who

brings an item will be in a draw for a bag of Easter Eggs.

Tickets are being sold outside New World 22nd and 23rd March. Thank you to all those who have offered

to help out..

Raffle Tickets are attached to this newsletter for you to sell. These need to be returned to school by March 23.

The upgrade of our Library in the Turanga O Moana block has begun. The outside deck and the steps have been completed, we are now waiting for the bi-fold doors to be made and then we will see some progress on the interior of the space.
