The Caribbean Shipping
Association (CSA) welcomes all its
delegates to Port of Spain, Trinidad
for what promises to be an
energetic series of meetings and
discussions at the 46th Annual
General Meeting, Conference &
Exhibition.
From October 17-19, 2016, some of
the largest and most influential supply
chain interests comprising shipping
lines, ship’s agents, customs and
maritime authorities, agencies, ports
and terminals across this hemisphere
gather in the twin-island republic for
Port of Spain for a conference which
has earned a reputation as one of the
Caribbean region’s premier shipping
calendar events.
The Shipping Association of Trinidad
& Tobago plays host to the CSA’s
AGM which will be juxtaposed with its
international maritime executives’
conference and a business
exposition. The organisers seek once
again to provide exceptional
networking opportunities for
delegates who hail from not only the
Caribbean, but North, Central and
South America as well as Europe.
The three-day event is being held at
the Hyatt Regency Port of Spain
hotel, where CSA President David
Jean Marie welcomes delegates on
Monday, October 17, 2018.
The Caribbean Shipping Association
(CSA) deliberates on its internal
operations at its Annual General
Meeting on Sunday ahead of the
meeting. A special highlight of the
day’s activities will be a presentation
by National Energy Corporation of
Trinidad & Tobago Ltd (NEC).
The second and third days of the T&T
conference will focus on
presentations by international and
regional maritime sector leaders that
will allow delegates a chance to hear
current information on various
industry trends including
developments in Cuban cruise
shipping, Port & Cyber security, port
privatisation, technology and US
Election Campaign Issues’ potential
impact on the Caribbean Maritime
space. A port tour by sea will follow.
The highly engaging agenda this year
includes a spouses programme and
nightly social activities which are the
hallmark of any CSA conference.
Time has been set aside for
networking activities, allowing
participants to initiate contact with
potential partners and network with
suppliers. This includes Svitzer
sponsored cocktails on Tuesday
night.
The highlight of the conference is a
masked gala where the 2015 Port
Awards will be announced.

Regional ports compete for top CSA prize ahead of AGM
Last year, the Port of
Cartagena/Sociedad Portuaria de
Cartagena (SPRC) walked away with
the coveted top prize - Best Container
Terminal (2014) and earned bragging
rights for a year at the Caribbean
Shipping Association’s (CSA) 45th
annual conference. This year, the
competition is poised to be just as
intense with applications coming into
the CSA Secretariat from ports across
the region vying for the top spot.
Each year, the CSA’s Port Awards
Committee compares the performance of
participating ports to determine who is
deserving of recognition, based on port
dependability and flexibility, port efficiency and productivity,
port growth and development, security, health, environment
and safety.
Any port in the Caribbean stands a chance of winning, as
awardees are not selected based on the size of their
operating port or terminal. The CSA assesses the
improvement, performance and security of the different
ports and terminals and, determines the awards, or any of
the various sectional prizes, once its management systems
are up to standard and its corporate functionality is
progressive. At the end of the process, the CSA is able to
announce to the world those Caribbean ports and terminals
that have achieved high standards of operational
performance.
The CSA’s Port Awards Competition is the high point of the
upcoming 46th Annual General Meeting, Conference &
Exhibition in Trinidad in October. This year organisers will
be hosting a masked ball, giving delegates a chance to
bring their personal style and creativity with their masks and
outfits for the evening of festivities.
The Caribbean Port Awards competition has helped to
attract new business for regional seaports and has helped
to validate the efforts and initiatives taken by local port
authorities and terminals to upgrade and improve their
facilities. One of the aims of the competition is to promote
regional growth for all ports and terminal operators in the
Caribbean and Latin American region. This competition
therefore serves as a significant marketing platform for
Caribbean ports and terminals to introduce their
development and expansion programmes to a global
audience.

‘Big Won’t Be Beautiful’ – 46th AGM to explore post
Panama Canal expansion with the experts
Continuing the CSA’s tradition of providing platforms which advance the development of the
region’s shipping industry, the 46th Annual General Meeting, Conference & Exhibition in Port
of Spain, Trinidad in October will provide a space for thought-leading discourse and
networking with influencers and other high-level professionals at the forefront of global
shipping and logistics.
With the global industry focus on the impact of the recent opening of the expanded Panama
Canal, the questions about what this new era of ‘big shipping’ will mean for the Caribbean, as
well as for North and Latin America are many. Leading the line-up of experts addressing the
topic at the CSA’s conference is Michael Kristiansen, President of CK Americas, who will
speak on the topic: A New Era of Liner Shipping in the Americas - ‘Big Won’t Be Beautiful’.

in shipping, having

and Latin America from 2008-2012 where
he had responsibility for all Terminal,
Depot and Vessel operations, and
Procurement initiatives amounting to
US$ 1.2 billion annually. From 2012-2013,
he was Managing Director for APM
