Pentecost: The Descent of the Holy Spirit

In the Old Testament Pentecost was the feast which occurred fifty days after Pass-over. As the passover feast celebrated the exodus of the Israelites from the slavery of Egypt, so Pentecost celebrated God’s gift of the ten commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai.

In the new covenant of the Messiah, the

Passover event takes on its new meaning

as the celebration of Christ’s death and

resurrection, the “exodus” of men from

this sinful world to the Kingdom of God.

And in the New Testament as well, the

Pentecostal feast is fulfilled and made new

by the coming of the “new law,” the de-

scent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples

of Christ.

When the day of Pentecost had come they

were all together in one place. And sud-

denly a sound came from heaven like the

rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the

house where they were sitting. And there

appeared to them tongues as of fire, dis-

tributed as resting upon each one of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy

Spirit… (Acts 2:1-4).

The Holy Spirit that Christ had promised to

his disciples came on the day of Pentecost

(Jn 14:26, 15:26; Lk 24:49; Acts 1:5). The

apostles received “the power from on

high,” and they began to preach and bear

witness to Jesus as the risen Christ, the King and the Lord. This moment has traditionally been called the birthday of the

Church.

In the liturgical services of the feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit is celebrated together with the full revelation

of the divine Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The fulness of the Godhead is manifested with the Spirit’s coming to man,

and the Church hymns celebrate this manifestation as the final act of God’s self-disclosure and self-donation to the world of

His creation. For this reason Pentecost Sunday is also called Trinity Day in the Orthodox tradition. Often on this day the icon of

the Holy Trinity—particularly that of the three angelic figures who appeared to Abraham, the forefather of the Christian faith -

is placed in the center of the church. This icon is used with the traditional icon of Pentecost which shows the tongues of fire

hovering over Mary and the Twelve Apostles, the original prototype of the Church, who are themselves sitting in unity sur-

rounding a symbolic image of “cosmos,” the world.

On Pentecost we have the final fulfillment of the mission of Jesus Christ and the first beginning of the messianic age of the

Kingdom of God mystically present in this world in the Church of the Messiah. For this reason the fiftieth day stands as the

beginning of the era which is beyond the limitations of this world, fifty being that number which stands for eternal and heav-

enly fulfillment in Jewish and Christian mystical piety: seven times seven, plus one.

Thus, Pentecost is called an apocalyptic day, which means the day of final revelation. It is also called an eschatological day,

which means the day of the final and perfect end (in Greek eschaton which means the end). For when the Messiah comes and

the Lord’s Day is at hand, the “last days” are inaugurated in which “God declares:... I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.”

This is the ancient prophecy to which the Apostle Peter refers in the first sermon of the Christian Church which was preached

on the first Sunday of Pentecost (Acts 2: 1 7; Joel 2: 28-32).

Once again it must be noted that the feast of Pentecost is not simply the celebration of an event which took place centuries

ago. It is the celebration of what must happen and does happen to us in the Church today. We all have died and risen with the

Messiah-King, and we all have received his Most Holy Spirit. We are the “temples of the Holy Spirit.” God’s Spirit dwells in us

(Rom 8; 1 Cor 2-3, 12; 2 Cor 3; Gal 5; Eph 2-3). We, by our own membership in the Church, have received “the seal of the gift

of the Holy Spirit” in the sacrament of chrismation. Pentecost has happened to us.

The Divine Liturgy of Pentecost recalls our baptism into Christ with the verse from Galatians again replacing the Thrice-Holy

Hymn. Special verses from the psalms also replace the usual antiphonal psalms of the liturgy. The epistle and gospel readings

tell of the Spirit’s coming to men. The kontakion sings of the reversal of Babel as God unites the nations into the unity of his

Spirit. The troparion proclaims the gathering of the whole universe into God’s net through the work of the inspired apostles.

The hymns 0 Heavenly King and We have seen the True Light are sung for the first time since Easter, calling the Holy Spirit to

“come and abide in us”, and proclaiming that “we have received the heavenly Spirit.” The church building is decorated with

flowers and the green leaves of the summer to show that God’s divine Breath comes to renew all creation as the “life-creating

Spirit.” In Hebrew the word for Spirit, breath and wind is the same word, ruah.

Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God, who hast revealed the fishermen as most wise by sending down upon them the Holy

Spirit: through them Thou didst draw the world into Thy net. O Lover of Man, Glory to Thee (Troparion).

When the Most High came down and confused the tongues, he divided the

nations. But when he distributed the tongues of fire, he called all to unity.

Therefore, with one voice, we glorify the All-Holy Spirit! (Kontakion)

The Feast of Pentecost evening features three long prayers at which the faithful

kneel for the first time since Easter. The Monday after Pentecost is the feast of

the Holy Spirit in the Orthodox Church, and the Sunday after Pentecost is

the feast of All Saints. This is the logical liturgical sequence since the coming of

the Holy Spirit is fulfilled in men by their becoming saints, and this is the very

purpose of the creation and salvation of the world. “Thus says the Lord: Conse-

crate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I your God am holy” (Lev 11:44-45,

1 Pet 1:15-16).

Brass Restoration Project

The restoration project is now complete. This first project for the new Beautification Committee was a great success thanks to the generous donations from our Parishioners. The entire project has been fully funded with no impact on our budget. The brass throughout the Narthex and Sanctuary is now glowing in His glory.

THE VOICETHE VOICE June 2014June 2014

It's that time of the year for the Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas community to serve up its pastries, lamb din-ners, moussaka, dolmades, pastitsio, and other delights. Over 30,000 people will visit us to help cele-brate the 40th year of Cincinnati’s number one ethnic festival, The Panegyri.

Our Panegyri has been so successful and well received in the Cincinnati community primarily because of the outstanding ef-fort of our Parishioner volunteers. It is the time when we offer our time and talents for the stewardship of our Church. It is the time for volunteerism at its best.

But why do we volunteer so much? Why do a group of ladies spend many months and hours in the kitchen baking those wonderful pastries? Why do so many toil in a hot kitchen cooking all the Greek dinners to be consumed? Why do the danc-ers, young and old, perform for hours on a hot stage? Why do we tolerate working in the heat of a blacktopped parking lot for three days?

We volunteer for a variety of reasons. We are proud of our heritage, our Orthodox faith, and the community of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas. We know that our festival does indeed make a difference and there is no better feeling than that we helped make that difference. We all want to feel our lives have meaning. Volunteerism satisfies that need to serve God by helping with service to our Church. When our volunteerism makes a difference, it contributes to our sense of achievement.

When we volunteer our time and talents in our community, Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas gains name recognition and visibility. It exposes us to more people and expands our relationship base. We become a recognized entity in our community and as a result, the Panegyri has increased in popularity and attendance.

Volunteerism allows us to meet new people and form new relationships. These relationships can turn into life-long friend-ships or business acquaintances.

Volunteerism is a perfect way to highlight our own personal skill sets. When we do a good job, people notice and that trans-lates into opportunities for Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas to benefit both financially and in community goodwill. People like to as-sociate with people they know and trust. What better way to make that happen than volunteering? Because of volunteerism, the United States of America has become the most magnanimous country in the history of the world.

So prayerfully and thoughtfully review your calendars for the time between now and the Panegyri, and commit what time you can, no matter how much or little, to make our 40th Annual Panegyri the most successful one ever!

CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS

We had a wonderful Easter luncheon prepared by Alex Jon-son and Jim Jonson. We had cheesecake for a different des-sert for a change. Bill and Marie Tsacalis joined the club as new members. Welcome! Also, thank you to Bill for taking the group picture.

Peter Triantafilou and Miranda Watzenk announced their engagement on April 11, 2014. Peter is the son of Pete and Theresa Triantafilou and grandson of Rita and the late Mike Triantafilou. Congratulations.

Bob Economou passed away suddenly this past May. Our sympathy to his daughter, Melissa Muennich, and family. Bob was at our last Over 50’s luncheon when we had our pic-ture taken. We lit a candle in his memory. He will be missed by his friends in the Over Fifty Club. May his memory be eter-nal.

We will not have a luncheon in June because of the Panegyri. On July 19, we will go to a restaurant.

OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson We have had a great year; however, our staff was limited

because of a number of open teaching or assistant positions.

The ability to effectively manage the classroom goes up ex-

ponentially in the classrooms where we have teaching teams

consisting of two or more teachers/assistants. For next

year’s staff, we are in need of assistant teachers for Pre-

School, and grades 4, 6, and 8. Please consider this opportu-

nity to serve your parish and make our SCS program excep-

tional. St. Theophan the Recluse said, "Of all the Holy works,

the education of children is the most holy."

Nativity Program Director is another area for which to con-

sider volunteering time and talent to our parish. SCS has per-

formed relatively the same program for the past nine years;

it is time to add something new or different to this beautiful

event. SCS needs one or two individuals who are interested

in giving the Nativity program a new life to take over as the

director. The Nativity Program Director would work with Cara

Chryssovergis, SCS Director and Janice Kellaris, Choir Direc-

tor, but they would have artistic freedom to improve the

script and score wherever possible. This is an amazing op-

portunity for someone with an interest in music or theatre to

make a difference to our SCS program.

Although our food pantry contest will come to a close with

the end of SCS, there is still a need to keep the food pantry

stocked. Hunger also does not go on summer vacation, so

please continue to provide donations all summer. We col-

lected over 3000 items this year! We are making a difference

in this community!

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer your

time and talents, contact Cara Chryssovergis at 513-226-2746

or [email protected].

As we break for the summer and prepare for the Panegyri, the Ladies of Philoptochos would like to thank the commu-nity for all of its support this past year. Through that sup-port, our Philoptochos has been able to raise funds to meet its national and metropolis charitable obligations, in addition to providing support to a wide variety of local and national groups and charities.

Our last “event” before the summer break, Pentecost Sun-day, June 8, after the Divine Liturgy, will be a luncheon snack prepared for the community. We hope that you all will join us.

May we all have a safe and happy summer as well as a suc-cessful and joyous Panegyri.

DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE…Karen Aamodt

We are pleased to announce that Michele Sutherland Panagiotopoulos was elected to be our new President for 2014-15! Jacinta (Jay) Williams was elected to the office of Vice President, with Angela Storch and Patti Neuendorf to remain as Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer. Elected to the Board of Advisors were Helen Nicholas, Mary Morgan, Virginia Price and Irene Zigoris with soon-to-be Past Presi-dent Karen Aamodt as Advisor. Please congratulate these ladies and wish them a successful term. Installation will take place at our August meeting.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who supported our Mother’s Day Memorial and Artoclasia programs. Special thanks go to Fr. Bill and Fr. Iranaeus for celebrating, Mrs. Irene Kyrios for preparing the koliva, Helen Nicholas and Vera Manolakas for baking the artos and to Cindy Nicholas for taking care of eve-rything that day. Nick and Helen Nicholas donated the wine in memory of their parents, and Peter and Karen Aamodt donated the oil. We hope to see equal support for our Fa-ther’s Day programs. This issue of The Voice includes a sign-up form, or you can always contact any member of our chap-ter after Church for the next few Sundays.

The 86th annual Buckeye District #11 AHEPA Family Conven-tion is quickly approaching! Cincinnati is proud to host this

year’s event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blue Ash on June 13, 14 and 15. Tickets are available for the golf outing during the day on Friday the 13th as well as for the Greek Night din-ner dance that evening. Don’t forget that we will once again publish a commemorative album. There are still plenty of spaces left for you to promote your organization, business, other worthy causes, or to honor and remember someone dear to your heart. Take advantage of this great opportunity to partner with AHEPA and gain access to advertise your business or special interest to all the members, delegates and officers who will attend. They’re coming to Cincinnati from throughout Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia and they share our common interests! Don’t forget, this helps us raise scholarship funds for our youth!

We will again be part of the team providing Greek cooking demonstrations at our annual Panegyri. This is always a wel-come feature of our cultural program and a great way to find a seat in a cool room to beat the heat, enjoy creative Greek cooking and delicious samples. We have a surprise recipe for this year; you won’t want to miss it!

If you have questions regarding our organization or our pro-jects, please contact President Karen Aamodt at 513-582-7263 or [email protected].

Roof Repair Fund

The Parish Council has resumed passing a second tray each Sunday. We have received donations from 142 families (16% of our Parish households). We have also had 3 of our organizations make donations towards

this fund. Although donations have not been received as quickly as we had hoped, we are confident that as a Parish Family, we will meet this financial obligation. The Parish Council continues to ask each Parish household to consider a donation of $250 towards the remaining cost for the repairs.

We appreciate your concern and your support.

Stewardship Message

This month we observe the feast of Pentecost, marking the descent of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus promised the Apos-tles, to guide the Church into all truth. Knowing the truth of the Gospel, and proclaiming it by word and example allows us to live in the Kingdom of God even as we wait for Christ’s return. Living in the Kingdom may, at first glance, seem far different than living in the spiritual desert of Great Lent, as we were just a few weeks ago. It certainly is in some respects since we are now on the other side of Good Friday, shar-ing in the joy of the risen Lord responding to His call to grow the Church. However, the fruits of our Christian jour-ney, whether of Lenten repentance, Paschal joy or bold witness via the Holy Spirit, are determined by the same attention to inward spiritual discipline and outward signs of generosity toward others. While the period after Pentecost is a long liturgical season, leading some Christians to refer to it as “ordinary time,” building up the Kingdom of God continues to require more than ordinary efforts. This is why your continued stewardship contributions, which support the many ministries of the Parish, remain a critical component in our collective Christian witness. The ordinary pattern of life, be it work or school, may slow enough to allow periods of relaxation especially during the summer months. However, our prayer should be unceasing, we are told, and so too should our generosity be. As Father Bill mentioned last month, the response by parishioners to this year’s stewardship requests has been very positive so far. Both stewardship pledges and contributions received are running ahead of last year. It is not too late to join in this effort if you have not yet done so. Please contact Eugene Nicholas in the Church office or ask any Parish Council member for a pledge form to complete.
