Reading this paper is time well spent.
The paper often addresses issues or topics that I am very concerned about.
I look at the newspaper as educational, I am gaining something.
The newspaper is good in that it has stories that are not covered on TV or radio.
I bring up things I’ve read in this newspaper in conversations with many other people.
Reading this paper is like belonging to a group.
I look forward to getting this newspaper.

Heart of a Mother Heart Health Luncheon
WHAT: This Mother and Daughter event is both fun and informative. In addition to a heart-healthy lunch, participants will enjoy a fashion show featuring the finalists from a mother and daughter look-a-like contest and hear an informative heart health presentation from Dr. Cynthia M. Walker, NP. This won’t be your everyday boring event, a DJ will help set the tone, often encouraging the ladies to “get up and groove/move.”
WHY: Heart disease is the number one killer of all demographic groups in America, but African Americans die from both diseases at a disproportionately high rate.
EVENT PARTNERS: The American Heart and Stroke Association, and The Mid-American All-Indian Center
EVENT HISTORY: This is the 6th year for Camellia Gooch Lee Heart of the Matter event designed to bring attention to and reduce the incidence rate of heart disease. The annual event is named in honor of Camellia Gooch Lee, sister of Bonita Gooch -- Editor of The Community Voice newspaper. Camellia died unexpectedly from heart disease in 2010. Determined to help save other lives, Bonita took up the mission of increasing awareness of the risk factors for heart disease, all of which can be addressed or prevented. The annual event has included teas, luncheons, and walks. This year’s event, a luncheon, is timed to occur around Mother’s Day and themed “Heart of a Mother”
2017 PLAN: We’re setting up for and expect 300 women to attend the event.
