Comparing the visions of Ezekiel and Lehi

The following verses are presented in the same order as in their respective chapters - with the exception of the verses in red from Ezekiel 1

which have been moved to line up with matching verses from 1Nephi 1. For comparison, some text has been deleted as shown, but no words

have been rearranged.

Ezekiel 1 Ezekiel sees in vision. About 592BC

1 NOW it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth

month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the

captives by the river of Chebar

1 Nephi 1Nephi begins the record Lehi sees in vision 600 B.C.

4 For it came to pass in the commencement of the first year of

the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, (my father, Lehi, having

dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days);

2 In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of

king Jehoiachin's captivity…

…and in that same year there came many prophets, prophesying

unto the people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem

must be destroyed.

3 The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel… 5 … my father, Lehi,…prayed unto the Lord,..

4 ¶ And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the

north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a

brightness was about it,

6 And…there came a pillar of fire and dwelt upon a rock before

him (Lehi)

28 …And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a

voice of one that spake.

7 …and because of the things which he saw and heard he did

quake and tremble exceedingly. And it came to pass that he

returned to his own house at Jerusalem; and he cast himself upon

his bed

5 Also out of the midst (of the fire), …came the likeness of

four living creatures (beings). And…their appearance was

like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps:

…surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the

attitude of singing and praising their God.

1…the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God… 8 And being thus overcome with the Spirit, he was carried away

in a vision, even that he saw the heavens open, and

he thought he saw God sitting upon his throne,

…it went up and down among the living creatures; and the

fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning…

9 …One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld

that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day.

20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went… 10 And he also saw twelve others following him,

22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the

living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal

stretched forth over their heads above.

and their brightness did exceed that of the stars in the

firmament.

21 When those went, these went; and when those stood,

these stood; and …….

11 And they came down and went forth upon the face of the

earth; and the first came and stood before my father,

…for the spirit of the living creature was in the (angels)… 12 … he was filled with the Spirit of the Lord.

24 … I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great

waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, …

13 …saying: Wo, wo, unto Jerusalem, for I have seen thine

abominations!

28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the

day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round

about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory

of the LORD.

14 …my father…did exclaim Great and marvelous are thy

works, O Lord God Almighty!

26 ¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was

the likeness of a throne,

Thy throne is high in the heavens, and thy power, and goodness,

and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth;

The following words in black are from First Nephi 1. The words in red are from Ezekiel 1. Even though the Old Testament

record of Ezekiel was revealed before Lehi's vision in the Book of Mormon, putting these phrases together with Lehi's vision

shown before Ezekiel's vision makes sense in light of the fact that Lehi preceded Ezekiel. No words or phrases have been

rearranged.
