The Good: Forties and Fifties Ladylike Glam - This trend was everywhere in 2011, and although it’s been bubbling away as a subculture for years, this year the trend exploded into mainstream. Helped along with the likes of The Blitz Party, and its emergence on the catwalks at London Fashion Week we love this trend for all it stands for. The 60s Mod - With Twiggy as our muse the 60s mod look came to life in our vintage wardrobes. Mini dresses, block colours and clean lines with chunky bags, belts and buttons. Scooter mobs became trendy once again and girls completed the look with big beehives. My personal favourite look of the year.Seventies Style - Spring/Summer 11’ was over-run with maxis dresses, bellbottoms and large floppy hats. The ‘Florence Welsh’ ‘Woodstock’ look reigned and 70s originals and high street repros coupled with rubber wellies and John Lennon glasses, proved to be ‘de

rigour’ for festival goers. The Bad:Gothic Gone Wrong - Goth meets ringmaster. This look looks fab if executed properly but we’ve all seen the not so great examples. Sexy vamp might be cool but the Bride of Dracula vibe was not so...Victoriana - I have seen both good and bad examples of this trend recently. It has a tendency to look overly theatrical with all its ruffles, lace and contrasting textures. The Sweeney Todd look is a bit dramatic off stage!

The Ugly:The ones that are so bad they’re good! Christmas Jumpers - Still fresh in the mind... the reindeer clad, snowman faced fluffy woollen jumpers were all the rage in December (and we all know we will be back in them next year!)Geek Chic - Think Napoleon Dynamite and yes, believe it or not this has been a huge trend on the vintage scene. Now I’m not saying it can’t be pulled off and actually

dare I say, look cool!

By far, the majority of this year’s trends rocked and spread like wildfire on the UK streets. The past years vintage scene has exploded and seen huge growth in followers, traders and new shops and events. Trends that begin on our streets now bubble up faster than ever and evolve into new ones every day. I love all the good, bad and yes even the ugly trends and love this industry for all its crea-tivity and inventiveness and look forward to fol-lowing (and maybe even starting) more this year!

Ones to watch in 2012:The 60s Mod - Continued from last year expect this trend to grow again this year

80s Punk - Think Vivienne Westwood and the Sex Pistols, slashed T-shirts and leather

20s Flapper Girls - Tassels, heels and short pin curled bobs. Bugsy Malone style

AN INTRODUCTION

The Beauty Queens Help You Detox After The Christmas Period!

Hair & Make-Up by Gina & Laura from The Beauty Queens 1312

Has your skin had enough? Has it gotten oily in the t-zone from all those alcohol toxins and dry on the cheeks from all those outside trips to the Christmas markets? This is the time of year where we all start trying to do crazy things to rectify our exhausted complexions. Marilyn Monroe certainly tried to sustain a rather unusual method. Apparently, according to her first husband, Jim Dougherty, she used to rinse her face fifteen times after every wash. Quite what this was meant to do we’re not entirely sure! The Beauty Queens recommend water but think it is more about drinking it than splashing it on your face. We are going to be really cliché here and recommend the usual advice of 2 litres of water a day for the next 2 weeks (minimum!) but we are also going to recommend drinking Green Tea (3 cups a day). Green Tea is pretty much the only fat burner you need or that has proven truly effective so will be great for all your Christmas over-indulgences! It will also act as a powerful anti-oxidant detoxifying your body. The other main advantage is the calming effect it has, there is nothing better than a peaceful mind and good Green Tea will get you on the right track!

If you can get to one, saunas at your local gym would also be fantastic for outing all those toxins from not only your skin but your organs too. The next step is to bring back the routine into cleansing your face. If you’re a facewipes-and-moisturiser person, perhaps spend a little more time removing your daily grime with a 3-step cleansing, toning and moisturising routine and if you really feel out of sorts, an eye serum to combat those dark eye circles. The

Beauty Queens recommend the wonderful products from Liz Earle. If we could recommend four products from the range to start you off we would go with the Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser £12.25 100ml (suitable for all skin types) followed by the Instant Boost skin Tonic £12.25 200ml (suitable for all skin types), our favourite moisturiser EVER, the Skin Repair Moisturiser £18.25 50ml (for normal/combination skin but also available for other skin types) and to help banish any dark circles emerging under the eyes, the Daily Eye Repair £13.75 10ml. This is a wonderful product as it glides onto the skin and has teeny tiny light reflective particles so light bounces off it creating the illusion of perfectly awake peepers genius!

So now we have sorted out your bloated tummy and your complexion, let’s address that distressed barnet! Are we correct in assuming that the recent party season has brought out the endless use of hair straighteners, hairdryers, heated rollers, crimpers? Then we have a rule for you that we use on ourselves for January and banish all things heated anywhere near your tresses! Instead, opt for as much natural drying as possible (though we do realise this isn’t always ideal) and buy 2 items- an intensive moisture hair mask and a leave-in conditioner. We both have been dying our hair all sorts of colours for years and take pride in knowing that although our hair is still heavily processed, we inject so much moisture into our locks, it isn’t as nearly as damaged as it should be! You will generally find that most intensive hair masks recommend using them between shampoo and conditioner once a week. We recommend using them between shampoo and conditioner EVERY TIME YOU WASH YOUR HAIR! It is also a good idea to only use this mask from the middle of your hair to the ends so your hair won’t look greasy towards the roots. Once the hair is towel-dried, rub in a smidge of leave-in conditioner on the ends and either leave your hair to dry naturally or lightly blow-dry your hair. The Beauty Queens’ are loving Aveda hair products at the moment, especially The Aveda Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner (shampoo £14.50 per 250ml/ conditioner £16.50 per 200ml) and the leave-in Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair (£18.50 per 100ml). Use these products and over a few weeks you will certainly notice a difference!

We hope that we have helped a little with combating your January blues and making your body feel fabulous inside and out! Let us know what you think of the products we have recommended.

Did You Know?...To keep her complexion in tip-top condition, Katherine Hepburn would exfoliate regularly. She would use a mixture of sugar, a tiny amount of warm water and a squeeze of lemon juice massaged into the skin and followed up with a splash of ice-cold water.

Ever since the Pan Am girls brought the 60’s back with a bang, I have been wondering how I could incorporate this inspirational era into an article. After metaphorically scratching my head for a few minutes and wondering where my imagination had gone, I suddenly had one of those light bulb moments that you see in cartoons. Of course!

My wonderful Nonna was not only alive in the 60’s, but she was, and is, a particularly stylish young lady (for she is one of those people who will never grow old). So I blew the dust from some old family photo albums to see what I

could find. Here is my favourite.

As I was flicking through these albums, I started to think about what it is that makes the 60’s so prominent in my mind. Is it the iconic mini skirt, whose outrageous length shocked and inspired so many? Or could it be the fabulous beehive? Maybe it is the interrobang, a wonderful punctuation mark that was introduced in the early 60’s when publishers noticed the typographical awkwardness caused when the exclamation mark and question mark were used together. The interrobang is a fan-tastic combination of

the two, used to express wonder and curiosity simultaneously. Oh, and apologies for the rubbish attempt at making the interrobang relevant in this context, but I had to fit it in somewhere!

To conclude, the 60’s were fab, and I’m so glad that I’ve been able to look back through my family history to enjoy them fully.14

An Introduction To The vanity Box

New Year... Old Remedies! Putting Old wives Tales To The Test.

Happy New Year Vintage fans! We are so happy to be a part of The Vintage Rag Mag and we are really looking forward to imparting some of the tips and tricks we have learned over the years. So 2012 is here! January is traditionally the time we all take to our beds with an eye mask to hibernate.

Christmas nibbles and tipples have taken their toll on our skin, hair and bodies. At one of our Christmas tea dates my Grandmother was horrified to hear the price of the face mask I had just bought and told me that when she was young and had “overindulged at a dance “ she would use slices of apples to calm puffy eyes. Inspired by this hand me down tip we at The Vanity Box HQ are braving the cold, dark, January daylight and trawling through our archive of vintage beauty books and talking to our customers to bring you some truly retro homemade beauty treatments for you to try. Do they work or are we dealing with Old Wives tales? Most of the ingredients can be bought at the supermarket , try and use organic where you can. You will need a selection of bowls and spoons, some clingfilm and a brush to apply masks to your face- I use a foundation brush. Please check that

you do not have any allergies before trying any of these remedies.Peaches and Cream Face Mask - A nourishing skin firming maskIngredients:100ml double cream, 1 Ripe Peach - skin removed.Directions:Slice the ripe skinned peach into a small bow land mash into a pulp.Add the cream and stir until the mixture has the consistency of a thick, fruity yoghurt. Apply to a clean face using a mask brush or clean foundationbrush.Leave on for 20 minutes then wash off with tepid water. There shouldbe enough for a reapplication for better results or for you and a friend. Why does it work? Peaches contain AHA acids which are widely used in skincare products to regenerate the skin by revealing new skin, increase elasticity and for their brightening properties. Results:This mask smells amazing and if you can resist spooning it in to your mouth it should leave your skin soft and glowy. Don’t use if you have oily skin as the cream is very moisturising. Thumbs up!

Beer Hair Rinse - For great softness and shineIngredients:1 Can of bitter opened and allowed to go flat.Directions:After rinsing off your shampoo, pour the warm flat beer over your hairfrom root to tip allow to sit for 3- 5 minutes and rinse. Why does it work? The proteins in hops and malt help to rebuild and repair damaged hair. Results:Surprisingly good, my hair had an enhanced shine. However there is a downside - if you do no like the smell of beer this is not for you.I do not recommend doing this before a day or night out as Eau de Brewery is not the most appealing perfume! The Aroma can be improved by adding a few drops of a strongly scented essential oil like rosemary but take care not to let the rise run into your eyes. Thumbs up - great for a girl’s night in.

Asprin Spot Remover - Not just for that morning after headacheDo not use if you are allergic to aspirin and do not apply to broken skin.

Ingredients2 Aspirin Tablets -not soluble type and a few drops of water

DirectionsCrush the aspirin tablets in a pestle and mortar- if you don’t have one use a bowl and the end of a rolling pin. Add a few drops of water and mix in to a

grainy paste. If you have added to much water add another tablet. Apply directly to the spot and leave for at least 30 minutes before rinsing.

Why it works?Aspirin is made from acetylsalicylic acid and salicylic acid is a common

ingredient in spot and blemish treatments. Results:

Suffering from terrible spots after a few too many sherries which can last for weeks I was actually really surprised that this took the throb out of the mountain

on my chin. The redness was reduced and the swelling went down faster than normal. Thumbs up!

4. Sugar and Oil Body Scrub - For Baby Soft skinIngredients300g Granulated Sugar, 200ml Olive Oil, Juice of a lemonDirectionsIn a bowl mix the sugar into the oil, squeeze in the lemon juice, use the scrub immediately on clean damp skin then rinse or soak off.Why does it work? The Sugar gives the grainy texture to exfoliate and the Olive Oil is moisturising. The Lemon adds scents and extra cleansing power. Results:This was our favourite for results, lovely soft skin great for winter dryness. Thumbs up!

INTRODUCES YOU TO ROCk CANDY wINNER Of BEST NEw vINTAGE SHOP 2011

Since opening in January 2011 it has been a busy and fun filled 12 months for Rock Candy! Having lived in and around Archway for a number of years, and fed up with the lack of vintage available to me lo-cally (unless of course I wanted to pay the tourist heavy Camden prices), I decided to set up shop myself and put N19 on the vintage map. My partner and I took on a small ex estate agents, a completely blank canvas, and within a month transformed it into a cosy and

welcoming vintage boutique that has proved to be just what all of my vintage loving neighbours were waiting for! With an emphasis on fun and feel good clothing that is on trend and affordable, we opted for a small space where our carefully selected and neatly pressed women’s and menswear is easy to navigate, making Rock Candy accessible even to the most inexperienced of vintage shoppers. With our first birthday on the horizon, and

having earlier this year been voted as ‘Best New Vintage Shop 2011’ in The Vintage Guide to London Awards, we are really excited at what 2012 will bring. We’d love you to drop in and see us, but even if you can’t make it along to Upper Holloway, all is not lost! With our new boutique on ASOS Marketplace you can still buy Rock Candy goodies and follow us to keep up to date on news and events. 716 Holloway Road, London, N19 3NH, or online at www.rockcandyshop.co.uk.

INTRODUCES YOU TO vINTAGE EmPORIUm YORk

Those of you fortunate enough to visit the historic city of York really should stop by the Vintage Emporium – it’s an attraction in itself! This heavenly store is stationed on Fishergate (number 18 to be exact) and is the place to be for all things old and beautiful. It rings true to its name with the most enticing and inspiring collection of vintage clothing, accessories, kitch-enalia and well, pretty much anything worth remembering from the roaring 1920s to the fabulous 1960s. Each item is highly collectable, affordable and in the most amazing condition.

Anyway, who is this

elusive owner, the one in charge of such a wonderland? Well, it is none other than Keeley Harris - a vintage expert in the truest sense of the term, with over 20 years’ experience. One look at the store and it is not surprising – it really is a collectors dream!

The store is primarily spread over three rooms, each one including an eclectic mix of cloth-ing, accessories and furniture, artfully aloof in appearance – like you have quite literally stepped back in time to Gran’s parlour or living room. Walking through these series of rooms is in many ways like wondering round a museum – a highly

nostalgic and magical experience.

Looking for a 1940s tea dress or 1950s poodle skirt? Maybe you gentlemen want a couple of suits, tweed jackets or perhaps the odd trilby? Look no further, at Vintage Emporium you most certainly have arrived at your destination!

I spotted Bow and Crossbones a few years ago at the LondonTattoo Convention. They had the most amazing stall, it was so kitsch and inviting I wanted to buy everything! Bow and Crossbones have a wide range of handcrafted jewellery. From Guadalupe cameos and bamboo bracelets to a stunning range of vintage reproductions. These jewels are perfect for those rockin’ hunnies, vintage vixens and kitsch cuties.

Bow and Crossbones started in June 2008. Cam was getting frustrated shopping for jewellery and not finding anything quirky or unique. One day she found an amazing box of charms. She decided to have a go at making some jewellery. She loved it! Cam was given the opportunity to sell her new makings at a friend’s shop. From there it snowballed into the Bow and Crossbones we love and adore today. This year Bow and Crossbones would like to start focusing on more unique vintage reproductions. I was able to have a sneaky peek at some oftheir new ideas, and it’s safe to say Bow and Crossbones have some very cool new items coming our way.

BETTY FLOWERSHi my name is Betty Flowers and I am a professional makeup artist, hair accessory designer and haberdasher. I started my makeup career in Ohio in 2005. I traveled all over America doing some really fun makeup work such as commercials, runway, and theatrical. In 2007 I decided to join my family overseas and move to the UK. After dabbling in the arts of cocktails and checking out peoples teeth as a dental nurse, I went back to my dream job as a makeup artist. Now I get to work on all sorts of fun projects and photo shoots. As well as doing commercial shoots and events my passion of passions is vintage glamour.

SOME OF BETTY’S FANTASTIC WORK

There are some incredible people on the vintage scene in the UK, with amazing things to offer people. I plan on introducing you to as many of these cool cats as possible with my new monthly feature, I also plan on taking you to some fun vintage events and recommending some awesome great places to do your shopping.

Feel free to contact me through email for inquiries or [email protected]

For all that glitters and shines, rocks and shocks, classic or chic, old Skool or new style... A private collection of 20’s-80’s clothing and accessories for viewing, vintage parties or styling sessions.Find archive/design research pieces., trend led or induvidulity styling - either be styled to follow fashion....or find a one-off handmade original piece, quite in essence why vintage is so special. We also offer a hire service - going to Goodwood? or an era inspired Fancy Dress party? cocktail party? or Do you just need a fab coat or bag to go with that dress?

This has sprung from my involvment in theatre and the music industry over the years, I have always found myself styled or styling for stage and bands,

photoshoots and music videos but only on a personal level, people always came to me and knew I would have ‘something somewhere’ for every occassion, but I have recently been encouraged to develop this proffessionally.

So I started as a buyer for vintage shops and designers, but decided it would be better for these people to come to me in a nice environment, rather than me traipsing to them with my little suitcase! So that is how it has started under the title Crystal Vintage, named after my granny who inspired this passion in me in the first place. I have had the most amount of joy creating a space befitting these weird and wonderful items I own or have collected for other people. Now I have made the

collection of vintage clothes and accessories available to buy or hire for all, in a newly decorated showroom here at the Old Bakery near Heathfield, East Sussex, (as an off shoot of Country House Interi-ors and Lighting that is already in business here). On the road from Tunbridge Wells through to Battle or Hastings on the coast, for example, its a beautiful setting and well worth a day out to visit. I also attend various vintage fairs inc pop-up vintage in Hampstead.

THE CRYSTAL VINTAGE SHOWROOM VISITED

Pop Up Vintage Fairs

Islington EventWe were very excited when we received an invitation to the launch of Pop Up Vintage Fairs London’s new monthly venue at the Islington Assembly Hall which is part of the Town Hall, Upper Street, Islington N1 2UD on Sunday 20th November.

Having already visited their hugely popular monthly vintage fairs at both the Hampstead Town Hall and the stunning 19th Century French Gothic Church of St Stephen’s Rosslyn Hill we knew we didn’t want to miss this one. These fairs are organised by Maxine Stonehill who always pulls out all the stops to ensure that her fairs are the best for both the traders and visitors alike.

We were told that goody bags crammed with discount vouchers from the day’s

stallholders were on offer to the first 50 visitors through the door. Unsurprisingly a queue had formed outside the Assembly Hall waiting for the doors to open and the whole lot went in five minutes.

The hall was packed with over 40 vintage traders selling high quality vintage fashion, jewellery & accessories for ladies, stalls dedicated to gentlemen’s fashion & accessories, fantastic retro homeware and shabby chic furniture, mid-century retro furniture, antiques, upcycled books and more. It was a treasure trove of vintage discoveries.

They had set up the Pop Up Vintage Tea Room on the stage where we sat and watched the fabulous Three Belles

perform some forties tunes. These girls are so talented and looked gorgeous. Having seen their forties styling we decided to grab a Cosmopolitan from the Pop Up Cocktail Bar and wandered over to the Pop Up Vintage Beauty Parlour for a retro makeover.

Pop Up Vintage Fairs will be returning to the Islington Assembly Hall on Sunday 29th January for their next Vintage Fashion & Homeware Event, where you will be able to pick up some January bargains amongst over 40 fantastic vintage stalls.

For trader bookings or to find out more about their fairs email: [email protected], visit them at www.facebook.com/popupvintagefairs or call 07716 295998
