Community. A word we use often here at Faith. It's difficult to find a better word at times, and well really, there isn’t a synonym we could use that has the same heart. It takes a community with a big heart to stage an event like Magnolia Fare. We could look at the numbers - 20 winery sponsors, 38 community donations, 25 market stalls, 19 Village stalls, over 100 staff, dozens of students and over 200 parent volunteers – there are so many people and businesses to thank. Important Information

Friday October 28th was a wonderful day of celebration for our Year 12 students. They began the day with fun activities, spent time with their Village Care Groups and then enjoyed the sunshine and a delicious brunch on the eastern oval.

The Final Presentation was a very unique culmination of the five years of schooling for this cohort. They presented an insight into their journey, and shared their vast array of talents in all sorts of areas, ending the presentation with a well-choreographed dance battle. They certainly demonstrated their motto for this year – “Started as Many, Finished as One”.

Comments from staff about the Final Presentation included:

“Creative, tasteful and energised”, “It was fun, entertaining and energised”, and “Fun, creative, reflective, unique and celebrative”.

Year 12s Celebration Day and Final Presentation

Comments from Year 12 students about the whole day:

“I very much enjoyed the day, especially the Final Presentation. Very emotional and it felt like it was more of a celebration for us instead of putting on a performance.”

“Had the best day ever! Wouldn’t change a thing!”

“The activities were fun and the Final Presentation was a highlight of the year”.

A huge thank you to the Year 12s for a wonderful, fun filled celebration of their time at Faith.

Music NotesA big congratulations to all our Year 12 and 11 music students for their performances at the recent Cabaret style Soiree evenings held in the Eckermann Theatre. All students presented their repertoire to an adoring audience consisting of family, friends and staff, and were assessed on their performance during the evening. It takes a lot of courage to perform in such a professional setting and we are very proud of everyone’s achievement. A big thank you to all involved for helping to make the evenings such a success.

Music Faculty

And then the big event. The flurry of activity after school as Village Care Groups set up stalls and fired up the barbeques. The welcoming faces as friends and parents arrived to share in the evening of activity. The warmth and composure of Ivan as he shared ancient traditions of his people and opened the event with his words and smoking ceremony using tools over 300 years old. The warm air and sunshine that embraced us before the winds picked up and the cool air replaced the warmth. The students who savoured their time on the main stage – and their family, friends and community members that supported them by tapping toes, cheering, singing along and clapping enthusiastically. Amazing talent. The wafting aromas of barbeques sizzling and the background chatter of Village Care Group families meeting, catching up, and helping on stalls. The bright eyes of young children drawn to the piglets, and lambs, and calves generously borrowed for the evening from the Nietschke family. Small hands reaching for more lollies to add to overflowing decorated honey biscuits, and creative minds working to decorate a lantern or kite masterpiece. The opportunity for visitors to sample new release Mengler View wines

Magnolia Fare Update Contand the fantastic feedback about the quality and taste carefully crafted by our team of student Assistant Winemakers. Supporters such as Graham Wright who led the wine auction for the seventh time – another genuine display of warmth and generosity and support for the College. The apple bobbing fun and the sumo ‘bumping’ laughs. The market stalls filled with the practical, the delicious, the beautiful and the creative. The Year 12 art. The Year 12 design – so much talent on display in the light-filled foyer of the BACC. The fireworks. The generous sponsorship from Yalumba Nursery to enable Magnolia Fare to conclude with the colour and excitement of a sparkling show in the sky. The many hands that helped to pack up – tables moved, chairs stacked, dishes washed. The shrill chatter of children as they walked back to cars with family and friends. The smiling faces from parents, from congregation members, from students, from staff - offering encouragement, support and a willingness to be involved.

That is community. That is what makes Magnolia Fare a special event. That is what makes Faith a special place. Thank you for your contribution to our community.

The college celebrated and acknowledged many student achievements in Visual Arts last week, culminating in the presentation of the People’s Choice Awards on Friday night, November 4, during Magnolia Fare.

Faith Visual Arts Week 2016

The Visual Arts Exhibition was again displayed in the foyer of the Barossa Arts and Convention Centre to showcase over 30 major art and design works. The involvement and interest from the College community was fantastic, with a record number of visitors and votes cast for the People’s Choice Awards. Students were also involved in a Village Visual Arts Quiz, with the winning entry coming from LIGHT PASS, who have now won this prize back to back!

The exhibition was launched last Tuesday during a chapel address which included a special presentation to 2015 Faith graduate, Ashleigh Harris, gold medal winner of the National School Wine Label Competition for 2016. We also recognised Melanie Spehr’s Year 11 Design class who created some exciting entries for the Footprints Cover Design, awarded to Abby Brooks. Elsa Schuster and Meg Bielby, Faith graduates in Art and Design in 2014, officially opened the exhibition with an inspiring address about their own career pathways in the Visual Arts. We appreciated the Year 12 students who spoke about their work and gave the audience a deeper understanding of the messages and ideas behind it. Thank you to Maeghan Linke, Ariana Cannan, Ella Slape, Morgan Wickham, Thomas Schaefer, Isobella Brown and Chloe Fay.

The standard of Design, under the leadership of Melanie Spehr, was excellent again this year as students

ventured into designing for many industries including architecture, tourism, home furnishing, fashion and entertainment, to name a few. The quality was very professional and students went to great lengths in applying their designs for marketing appeal.

Artistic themes included the damage and preservation of the environment,

Cherie O’Dea - Visual Arts Faculty Coordinator

Congratulations to all the students involved and thank you to parents and friends for their attendance at the chapel presentation, Magnolia Fare and for their support of Visual Arts throughout the year.

Important InformationMengler View Wine Launch

Just one of the expressive wine descriptions shared by the Vinpac team at the Mengler View Wine Launch held on Friday October 21.

Over 100 guests, including valued sponsors of the Mengler View Wine Program, and dedicated grape growers joined the Agriculture team to celebrate the newly released vintage of wines crafted by Year 10 students.

Talented music students provided background music as Hospitality students shared a selection of delicious canapes they had prepared in the College kitchens. The menu had been selected earlier in the term by a panel of judges in ‘MasterChef-style’ conditions, with Year 11 Hospitality students each presenting a dish to be considered for the menu. Main course was created by Sam Bussenschutt – Macadamia, spinach and camembert chicken breast, spiced cranberry sauce served with a chargrilled capsicum and ancient grain salad. Dessert was Apple parfait with spiced crumble, apple jelly and a salted caramel sauce, and was created by Malachi Obst. Both dishes were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious – we suspect all dishes went back to the kitchen empty! A special thanks to the Year 10 and 11 Food and Hospitality teams for providing the meal on the evening.

And of course… the main event… the wines! The 22nd Vintage of Mengler View includes a 2016 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, 2016 Riesling, 2016 Rosè, 2015 Shiraz and 2015 Sparkling Cab Shiraz. Design student Thomas Schaefer was acknowledged on the evening for his colourful label design, which was chosen for the 2016 Vintage release. The Agriculture team shared the story of this year’s Vintage from grape to bottle and acknowledged our

valued growers for each wine. Quite simply, the wine program would not be a success without the fantastic quality of fruit that is so generously donated each year. We thank Greg and the team at Vinpac for providing an entertaining and expressive description of the wines for us. We’ve included some of the highlights below:

2016 Riesling: Lemon and lime on the nose with a round palate and good acid ‘zing’. Good flavour and length. “Best advice – keep some chilled and enjoy this Summer!”

2016 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon: Gooseberries and citrus characters with a crisp palate and good, intense Sauvignon Blanc characteristics. “Enjoy watching the Summer pass by with a dozen or two of this wine”

2016 Rosè: Attractive salmon pink in colour with hints of strawberries and raspberries on the nose and a well-balanced palate with a touch of sweetness.

2015 Shiraz: “Showing all the characters we like in a good Barossa Shiraz – stewed plums, earthy, plenty of spicy Shiraz, lots of balance and vanilla oakiness…concentrated layers of flavour” It is a big wine with lots of flavour, which drinks well now and will also have the potential to cellar well.

“It was a symphony of bubbles, dark cherry, berries and oak…”

2015 Sparkling Cab Shiraz: “It was a symphony of bubbles, dark cherry, berries and oak..” A wine with great character – one that will stand up well against other well-known sparkling reds in the region!

Interested in some new release wine for Summer? The updated wine order form can be downloaded from the website via http://faith.sa.edu.au/community/wine-sales/

Defence Flight Camp

Sarah Bradshaw Submitted by Sarah

Future Pathways

Sarah Bradshaw in Year 11 applied and was successful in participating in a female defence Flight and Engineering Camp in Victoria. Please read about her experience.

Attending this camp was definitely in line with my future pathway. I want to be a fighter pilot in the Air force and fly the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter which the air force will be obtaining in 2018 and participating in this camp has set in concrete the career I want to go for.

The benefits of attending this camp is we were always surrounded by Air force pilots or members who were

very knowledgeable and willing to answer all of the questions we had about what life is like in the air force as a pilot. Two Australian Defence Force Academy cadets were on the camp with us and they were willing to answer our questions about ADFA.

Trish Cirillo Careers Coordinator

I chose to apply to this program as I wanted to experience what life is like to be a pilot in the air force and what the day to day activities consist of.

The activities I participated in were flights in a CT-4 which is the first training aircraft which all pilots train in. I did 6 loops in a row and a couple of spins and snap rolls. Spending most of the flight upside down along the coast of Victoria was pretty sick! I also got to fly in a rescue helicopter and the crew opened the doors in flight which was really cool. I also had the opportunity to have a go on the leadership course, fly in a King Air simulator and operate an aircraft in an air traffic control simulator.

I learnt so many new things about the air force that I did not previously know.

My favourite activities were definitely flying in the CT-4 and the helicopter flight. I also enjoyed meeting new friends from all over Australia who I may see in the future if we decide to join the Defence Force together.

In the last school holiday break 25 students and 4 teachers travelled to Japan as an optional extension of the Languages program here at Faith. The group were well received by the Japanese people, in particular the host families, students and staff from three separate schools with which Faith has established strong relationships over the years. A great deal of cultural immersion saw students further develop not only their language skills, but also a far greater understanding of Japanese life, history and perspectives. The experience was something all of us will reflect on and take with us as we return to Faith to continue our educational journeys. As the photos show, it was an action packed two weeks. We look forward to returning the warmth and hospitality we were shown when students and staff from the schools we visited come to Faith in 2017!

Student reflections on the trip:

I loved my host family as they were very kind. They took me to different places and gave me the opportunity to try new things. (Nicola Hapke-Speer)

It was very eye-opening to be completely thrown into the culture. Completely genuine and raw, I learned so much even in the first few hours. (Ariana Cannan)

It was awe-inspiring to go to all the traditional temples and shrines and being lost in how intricate and beautiful they were. (Lucy Whittaker)

I was amazed with the efficiency of the transport, especially the trains and Shinkansen. (Connor Chidgey)

At first it was a bit of a culture shock

Faith Japan Trip, October 3-17

due to the cleanliness, customs, transport, school and traditions. After a few days I was able to interact with my host family and really experience the Japanese culture, and I loved every second of it. (Caitlin Holt)

I was overwhelmed by the love all the people showed to me and how

in one day at school I was welcomed into their community. Being the equivalent to Justin Bieber while at school was pretty fun and a great experience. (Joey Bulla)

It was a great experience. The cultures are so different and I learned a lot. I really enjoyed the trip! (Jack Hanna)

2016 Secondary School Australia Swimming Championships

Jackson Docherty and Brodie Duell’s recent visit to Darwin to represent South Australia at the 2016 Secondary School Australia Swimming Championships

Jackson and Brodie where selected to represent South Australia at the 2016 Secondary School Australia Swimming Championships which was held at the Casuarina Aquatic Centre in Darwin during September.

Jackson represented the state in the U14’s and was selected to compete in 6 individual races and 3 relay teams through the week long carnival in the heat and humidity which took its toll on the team from SA who were still in winter mode.

Out of the 6 individual races Jackson achieved 5 Personal Bests (PB’s) with the highlights coming in his 2 favourite events the 50m and 100m freestyle in which he finished inside the top 10 for both events. In the 100m Freestyle Jackson swum 57.78 in a 1.47 second PB to qualify 4th fastest for the final.Unfortunately in the final things didn’t go to plan and after leading the race at the 50m mark he came out of the turn in last place after missing the wall due to turning one stroke too early to eventually finish a well-respected 7th in a time well outside his heat swim of 59.26, although he was disappointed in the

result it was a great experience and highlighted that everything must come together in a final when you’re competing against the best.

The 50m Freestyle showcases the fastest sprinters in the pool and you could throw a blanket over the competitors as they touched the wall. Jackson swum a 0.39 second PB in a time of 26.90 to finish in 10th place with the winner from NSW touching the wall in 25.48. It was a fast race with the top 10 swimmers all within 1.42 second of each other.

Both times in the 50m and 100m Freestyle now rank Jackson number 1 in the U14’s for South Australia which is a great achievement and reward for all the hard work and dedication towards training.

Brodie represented the state in the Male 17 – 19 year old age group. Brodie was selected to compete in 15 individual swims and 2 relay teams. Brodie chose to alter his high demand of individual swims however he still went on to complete a huge meet swimming a total of 10 individual swims and 2 relays.

Brodie Duell Jackson Docherty

Representation at the 2016 Secondary School Australia Swimming Championships bought many highlights for Brodie, from the 10 individual races Brodie achieved a clean sweep of 100% Personal Best times across all of his swims. Brodie also achieved 6 top 10 finishes in the Male 17 – 19 year old age group. This was an amazing achievement with Brodie turning 17 only two weeks prior to the meet.

Brodie said representing South Australia in swimming was a great experience and he was very pleased with all of his swims. Brodie stated there were many highlights but the top highlights of the meet for him were achieving a 10.27 second PB in one of the most challenging swims of all time the 200 Butterfly this result seen Brodie finish in 9th place. The other personal highlight for Brodie was being awarded the male certificate of acknowledgement “The School Sports South Australian Award” In recognition of his outstanding integrity, sportsmanship and concept of fair play at the 2016 School Sport Australian Swimming Championships. A further highlight seen Brodie finish the meet on a huge high competing in a 500 Freestyle relay and finishing in 2nd place to bring home a Silver medal. Overall it was a wonderful life experience for Jackson and Brodie who got to mix and socialise with other kids from across the state and country with friendships formed and memories created that will last a lifetime. Congratulations boys.

Christmas PorkDuring Term 4 the Year 9 Agriculture students have raised 4 piglets generously provided by Gavin and Sherinne Schuster from Freeling. The project is a great experience for our students enabling them to manage another intensive animal enterprise as well as meat chickens. Apart from the daily care required, students have been able to monitor growth rates and food conversion ratios. The porkers will be ready at 14 weeks of age for processing by the Kapunda Abattoir.

Sides of pork cut into chops will be available to Faith families at the cost of $8.50 per Kg with most sides weighing approxi-mately 25 kg. Each side of pork is individually weighed and priced accordingly.

Demand for the pork last year was extremely strong so please be prompt in placing orders to avoid disappointment. Orders, collection date and times will all be confirmed by phone but it is anticipated that the sides of pork will be available in early December before the end of the College year.

Please return orders to Bob Mitchell via Faith Student Services.
