With last Thursday’s annual food fest finally behind us (no pun intended, but extra gym time will be required), we can now turn our attention to what comes next. I like to call this particular month the “Ohmy-goshonlyfourweekstogo” sea-son. Time for all of us to take a gander at our checking account

balances, credit card debt and consider any potential sources of additional income. Like ol’ St. Nick, you need to make a list and check it twice and eliminate those who weren’t too very nice. You know who you are … For any bonafide shopaholic, the next few weeks are as close to nirvana as one can get. I’ve been known to make a few gift purchases once in a while - when a special occasion war-rants, of course. Such as when the day of the week ends in the letter ‘y’. So here’s Jeanine’s advice for “holiday shopping ‘til you dropping” … First – and this is key – relax! It’s going to be okay, honestly. I would suggest you start out with a nice glass (or two) of your wine of choice while you ponder just how much all this Christmas shopping will cost you. Or not – the heck with it – Christmas shopping only comes but once a year. Take a look at the check-book register (probably for the first time in months), get your plastic in order (alphabetically works for me), and honestly as-sess if the family pet really needs that cashmere poochie coat from Orvis.

Having a game plan – a road-map, if you will – of which stores to hit in what order is mightily important. And this is the beauty of shopping in E’ville – going to EVERY store in the village is SO convenient. Here’s what I do - purchase at least two items from each store – don’t miss a single one - and don’t have anyone specific in mind when you make your purchases. Get stuff that appeals to you and you alone. Be conspicuous – you want all your friends to see you lugging dozens of shopping bags from store to store. Go home, pull everything out and decide who would like what. Inevitably, there’ll be a few items that won’t find a home for Christmas. I call these the “or-phan presents” - these poor left-over gifts desperately need to be adopted - by me, of course. So, everybody’s holiday happy! So, dear readers, these are just a few ideas I keep in mind dur-ing the busy month of Decem-ber. Remember the best shopper is an impulsive shopper – don’t agonize over your purchases – just buy the darn thing. And hang on to those receipts. Until next week … JZ

Genesis House LuminariasLuminaria Night is December 21

December 21st is the longest, darkest night of the year. While many of us can sit inside with our families and friends and enjoy a warm fire in our fireplace, there are homeless individuals walking the streets and facing difficult life challenges alone. So, how can we comfort those in need of a home and a loving environment? One way is to support the work of Genesis House through the Luminaria Night. Genesis House works diligently to create a family-

atmosphere full of friends and love for homeless families and individuals. On December 21, you can be “the light in someone’s life” literally brightening neighborhood streets and homes with Luminarias (white bags with lit votive candles inside). The proceeds from luminaria kits benefit both Genesis House homeless shelters. Your help and kindness would be a light to all, and greatly appreciated. Luminaria Night: December

White House Cards ExhibitWhite House Christmas Card Collection on Exhibit at SBU

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., Nov. 21, 2011 — A White House Christmas card collection is one of three special exhibitions that will greet visitors to The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University over the holiday season. The Quick Center has also announced that it will light the giant Christmas tree in the museum atrium in a public event at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1. Holiday exhibitions include “Christmas Greetings from the White House: An Exhibition of Art and History,” a collection of more than 30 Christmas cards dating back to the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The exhibition includes the Christmas card sent by the Roosevelts in 1944 as well as cards chosen by subsequent first families right up through the Obamas. The exhibition also features

special gift prints given to White House staffers by former presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Clinton. Also included are additional works sent by artists who have designed cards, namely Kay Jackson, Ray Ellis, James Steinmeyer and Thomas McKnight. The collection is augmented by a series of panels on the traditions surrounding Christmas at the White House, as well as those practiced by the American public from the Civil War through modern times. The exhibition, housed in the Winifred Shortell Kenney Gallery on the museum’s second floor, closes Jan. 8, 2012. Returning for its traditional holiday run at The Quick Center is the exhibition of crèches from around the world. A crèche, or Nativity set, is a group of figurines representing the birth of Christ. It typically includes the holy family, angels,

kings, shepherds, animals and often villagers and other characters in accordance with local customs. The exhibition at the Quick Center includes créches ranging in style from elaborately detailed to refreshingly simple. Because of the size of the Christmas card collection, however, the crèche exhibition had to be scaled back this year. About 25 crèches are on display. Additional crèches from the collection have been loaned out to area schools and churches for public display over the holidays. Some of the youngest artists in the Olean area will also be featured in a special holiday exhibition. Winners of The Quick Center’s annual holiday art contest for students in grades kindergarten through fifth will have their works exhibited beginning Dec. 1. The Quick Center will also hold its annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 1. Lights on the giant tree in the museum’s atrium will be turned on in the 11 a.m. event, which is open to the public. All Quick Center galleries are free and open to the public. The Quick Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Quick Center will be closed Nov. 23-25 in observation of the Thanksgiving holiday. For more information, go to www.sbu.edu/quickcenter.

SBU Geometric BarnraisingLocal Math Students Participate in Geometric Barnraising at SBU

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., — St. Bonaventure University mathematics professor Dr. Christopher Hill called it a “geometric barn-raising,” which is a good thing because few would have known it by its formal name, a “mega-icosahedron-raising.” Still confused? Picture containers full of little, plastic, color-coded construction rods and round connector pieces, and eight bright high school mathematics students working individually and collaboratively for two hours to build a dozen beach ball-sized geometric shapes known as extended rhombicosidodecahedra or “mega-connectors.” The wow! Moment – the “barn-raising” – came when the individual mega-connectors were connected with additional plastic struts to form a mega-icosahedron standing some six

feet tall. It was Hill’s idea to build the super-sized structure using Zometool construction pieces. Zometool is an easy-to-use yet mathematically precise educational construction “toy” that is as likely to be found in an elementary school classroom as it is in a research scientist’s lab or engineer’s office. The unique design of its round connector pieces allows for construction in 62 different directions, enabling users to build millions of geometric structures, from basic shapes such as triangles and rectangles to models of DNA molecules to “shadows” of complex four-dimensional figures. Hill had the plan, but he needed builders and a place to work. Evelyn Sabina, curator of education at The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure, found both.

Sabina offered space in The Quick Center, then recruited students through math teachers Todd Christopher at Allegany-Limestone High School and Kris Ring at Olean High. The student participants were Colleen Bailey, Brandon Kohn, Chris Spears and Pete Marciano II from Allegany-Limestone and Andy Lu, Matt Witte, Becca Lasky and Nicole Sova from Olean High. The students were joined by teachers Christopher and Ring, as well as Allegany-Limestone teacher Linda Dodd-Nagel and St. Bonaventure education student Jackie Donovan. As a warm-up to the barn-raising, the students built models with such esoteric names as the cube-in-the-dodecahedron and the rhombic triacontahedron, as well as elaborate structures of their own design. Then the students got to work building the mega-connectors. Two hours later, they were linking the spheroids with “mega-struts” to form the towering stand-alone model. The structure, with more than 2,500 parts, was large enough that Becca Lasky was able to gingerly enter and stand up inside of it. Besides being challenging and fun, such model-building projects help students visualize abstract concepts, understand spatial relationships, perform mathematical investigations, and unleash their creativity, said Hill, noting they are as meaningful to math students as they are to students of engineering, architecture and art. For more information about educational outreach programs coordinated by The Quick Center at St. Bonaventure, go to www.sbu.edu/quickcenter or contact Sabina at [email protected].

This year, the Santa Sheriff’s Program of Cattaraugus County celebrates its eighth year of giving. Plans for the 2011giving season have been underway for a while now. The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office with partnering agencies has been raising funds to purchase gifts for the Cattaraugus County families referred to the program. The Santa Sheriff’s Program was initiated in 2004 by the now Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb in partnership with his brother Dana Whitcomb. At the time, Dana was director of the now-closed Division for Youth Detention Facility in Limestone, N.Y. When the Detention Facility closed Sheriff Whitcomb enlisted his brother Larry Whitcomb who is the Principal of the Salamanca Middle School to continue the youth involvement in the program. Larry and his staff are an important part of our program each year. The program’s goal was to introduce the youth to other aspects of the sheriff’s office and provide them with the experiences of sharing and caring. Since it served its

first five families in 2004, the program has grown to serve as much as 26 in 2010, said Deputy Brian Keis, program director for the last three years. Prior to taking on his leadership position, he was involved in the program as a representative for the Sheriff’s office. Local agencies, including the Department of Social Services, Cattaraugus County Community Action, Salamanca Middle School and Cattaraugus-Little Valley Elementary School, refer families and individuals to receive the service of this program. “This year we hope to serve at least 20 families with a planned delivery date of December 21 and 22,” Keis said. “We would like to continue receiving referrals but that will depend on the funds which we have available to provide for the families.” This year, the sheriff’s office has set a goal to collect $5,000 in donations for the program. “As of November 29, we have received $3,150 in donations, which is nearly $2,000 from where we would like to be,” said Keis. “We do have donations that are still coming in and with a little luck we may still have a chance to reach our goal.” Each

year the program utilizes the donations in entirety, said Keis. “We do not feel that maintaining a constant bank account does anyone in the community any good.” The sheriff’s office purchases the gifts at area merchants, including Wal-Mart in Olean, N.Y. Wal-Mart contributes monetary donations to the program in addition to a turkey for each family. Community volunteers, including youth from the Salamanca schools and other county agencies, wrap the gifts and package them for delivery. With questions related to the program contact Deputy Keis at (716) 938-9191 ext. 2899 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Those interested in donating may make their contributions payable to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, writing “Santa Sheriff’s” on the memo line. Donations may be sent to 301 Court St., Little Valley, N.Y. 14755. “I would like to thank all of those who have given and continue to support the Santa Sheriff’s Program as well as the other programs that help those in need during this holiday season,” said Keis.

Like Green Christmases? How about trying a Blou one this year. Honoring a beloved figure of Ellicottville once again, Jay Monti has organized the second annual Blou Christmas. Blou, a 7-year-old border collie, passed away two years ago Christmas week. So, to honor his memory and keep his mission alive, Monti and Tyb will be helping to raise money for the Pet Emergency Fund and other donations for the Almost Home Animal Sanctuary.

Tyb, Blou’s successor, is the spokesdog for the Pet Emergency Fund and the Letter from Home program. The Pet Emergency Fund provides money for 78 clinics in western New York for when people bring their pet to the veterinarian’s office in emergency situations and cannot pay for the full cost of care. Letters from Home program helps to give G.I.s all over the world letters. Over the years through selling photos of Blou, calendars and other such things, Blou has raised almost $56,000 for the fund, Monti said. “I started selling pictures and

cards of Blou, hoping to make $100 in a month, and I made $112 the first day and $1000 by the end of the month,” he said. Now, all cards, calendars and such feature Tyb as well. This year, Cavallaro Paint & Decorating in Bradford, Pa. along with A Touch of Ellicottville located at 33 Washington St, Ellicottville, NY and SHHH toys located at 18 Monroe St, Ellicottville, NY, have offered their space to help raise goods for both the fund and sanctuary. People can donate money to both causes, but specifically for the sanctuary people can drop off cleaning products, bleach, linens, towels, bedding, dog toys and collars, dog and cat food, laundry detergent, garbage bags, treats and clumpable litter to any of the above stores, Monti said. Last year Blou’s Christmas raised over $2,000 and three truckloads of items for the sanctuary. Monti hopes to match that this year. “We’ll take what we can get,” he said. The sanctuary in Little Valley accepts any animal that is not adoptable for any reason and instead of euthanizing them Monti says the animals there get to live out their normal life. Dr. Timothy O’Leary and his wife Laurie operate the sanctuary. People will be able to donate to both causes from now until January 6 at all locations. “100 percent of every dollar donated goes to the animals,” Monti said. “None of it is taken out for costs of products. That’s my donation.”

This hundred year old Victorian still maintains much of its primary charm. Part of the barn can be seen in the back.

SToRY AnD phoToSBY John ThomAS

STAFF WRITER

Those of you who have read this column before know that I tend to prefer older houses to newer ones. Over in Catta-raugus is a delightful Victorian home well over one hundred years old. Set in a quiet neigh-borhood this former farmhouse still has a barn out back, which the current owners are using for an additional garage. Only two families have owned the home since it was built, and it’s clear both of them have given

it a lot of loving attention. The home still retains most of the original woodwork including the wainscoting, window trim, and beautiful wood staircase. On the way up to the upstairs bedrooms, I try to give the bal-ustrade a shake, but it doesn’t budge. Four bedrooms and two baths means there is enough room for a family to spread out. The ground floor has a sitting room, parlor, and a formal dining room. There is a spare room on the ground floor that could be used as a bedroom. Just off the kitchen is a back stairway to

the upstairs, a real convenience. The downstairs basement is unfinished, and could be trans-formed into just about anything. Cattaraugus is only about 15 minutes from Ellicottville, which means your minutes away from skiing, golf, and all the amenities that Ellicottville has to offer. This venerable home offers old world charm, quiet town living, and the best of winter and summer activities. For more information about this home contact Tina Dillon, GRI Licensed Sales Associate at ERA Team VP Real Estate at 716-474-5646.

The large formal dining room can be closed off from the parlor by sliding wood doors. The Parlor boasts the original flooring and woodwork around the windows.

The kitchen still has the original handsome wood cabinets and floor. The double stain-less steel sink is a rare throwback to an earlier time.

Thanksgiving. Our national day of gluttony. What a glorious thing it is. Another Turkey Day has come and gone and it’s time to face the Silly Season head on. I love Thanksgiving. I truly do. It’s one of the few holidays left where I have nothing to do. Eat. Watch Football. Belch. Sleep. That’s the way it should be right? Wrong. Our country is changing and not for the better. For many good folks, Thanksgiving has transitioned from a day at Grandma’s house to just another day at work. Black Friday is one thing but, for many retailers and their workers Black Friday actually begins on Thursday and that, my friends, is a truly sad thing. I might be in the minority here but I truly believe that there should be at least one day every year set aside to spend entirely with the ones you love. There should be one day where we don’t have to be manipulated by the economy, politicians and greedy retailers telling us that we need to be

out shopping. This year more and more retailers across the country decided that it would be in their best interests to open on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, that meant that those businesses had to convince their employees that the bottom line was more important than family. Many Americans foolishly took the bait, abandoned their families and waited in line for hours just to do battle for the last X-Box or I-Phone at the local big box monstrosity. They walked away with empty stomachs, a handful of trinkets and a mountain of credit card debt that they’ll have to face right around the time they should be trimming the tree. Happy CEO’s everywhere watched the parade and the games, gorged themselves on holiday delicacies and then gorged themselves again on your money and the sweat and despair of their underpaid workers. Happy Holidays. We’ve been brainwashed here folks. We’ve been manipulated into believing that we’re actually getting a good deal on those sale items when, in reality, you could find the same bargains any other day of the year by just doing a little research. I’ve decided to do most of my Christmas shopping on E-Bay this year and everything I’ve looked at so far has been cheaper than anything else you’ll find at any of the “Marts.” I didn’t have to face the crowds, the insane mothers with pepper spray or the murderous thugs in the parking lot. I didn’t even use a credit card. Most importantly, I got to spend Thanksgiving with

my family. We’ve also been manipulated into believing that the tanking American economy is somehow our fault and that by going crazy for two days a year we can somehow save it. Lies. All lies. Notice how the stores that open on Thanksgiving are also the stores that cater mainly to poor folks or the middle class. They also happen to be the retailers who have fought hardest against unionization efforts over the years. They realize that they have total control over their employees and if they say jump, even on Thanksgiving, we all jump. Listen, the holidays are already too stressful for many American families. They shouldn’t be. Can we just forget about everything for, at least, one day a year? I realize that there are some people who actually enjoy the Black Friday crush for some perverse reason. This has become a new family tradition. So be it. But Black Thursday? Just leave us alone. Let us have our day. Give your employees the day off and let them break bread with their people. You’ve already ruined Christmas. Just give us back our Turkey Day and we can all be happy. We have to get it through our heads that everyday can’t be an emergency. It’s time to start ignoring the never ending crush of commercials and ads that begin around the time your kids should be trick or treating. Tell the malls and Marts that you’re sick and tired of feeling guilty about their bottom lines. Eat. Watch Football. Belch. Sleep. Just the way it should be.

Holiday Cards to MilitaryRed Cross is collecting Holiday Cards for Military

During this week of Thanksgiving, Americans take time to reflect and give thanks for the many gifts in our lives. Whether down the block, across the country or around the world we gather with family and loved ones to share a “touch of home.” It’s during this special season we ask you to take time to remember the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, their families and our nation’s veterans who may be separated or far from home. Whether printed, handmade or store-bought, these cards carry meaning for the recipients and the senders. “We’ve heard amazing stories from our men and women in uniform about the tremendous impact these messages of thanks and holiday well wishing have on them,” say Bill Tucker, Chapter Executive Director. “What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving, a truly American holiday, than by thanking those Americans who do so much for us?” We would like to invite you to send holiday greeting cards with

messages of thanks and support. Red Cross volunteers and Pitney Bowes will screen, sort and deliver your card to military installations and veterans and military hospitals across the U.S. and around the world. Over the last five years, the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes have received more than 3.5 million messages of thanks and holiday wishes to our service men and women, veterans and their families. Pitney Bowes lends its support by overseeing the sorting and delivery of millions of cards to military locations around the world. “Sending a card to a member of our military forces is a simple but powerful gesture that anyone can do to show their support for those in the armed forces who are far from home and possibly in harm’s way during this holiday season,” said Kevin Connolly, Vice President and General Manager of North American Service Delivery, Pitney Bowes Management Services and Vice President,

Strategic Transformation for Pitney Bowes. “The Holiday Mail for Heroes program allows anyone to easily say ‘thank you’ to members of our military forces at this time of year.”All holiday greetings should be addressed and sent to: Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456 Cards must be postmarked no later than December 9; cards received after this date will be returned to senders. For reasons of processing and safety, participants are asked to refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary gifts, using glitter or including any inserts with the cards. Visit redcross.org/holidaymail for a full list of recommended guidelines and best practices for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.Additional ways to become involved with the campaign include connecting with fellow card senders through Facebook at www.facebook.com/redcross and Twitter at www.twitter.com/redcross.

kids.” Greenwood’s Christmas tour will be a complete 16 shows, which he began a week ago in Georgia and will end December 16 in Pittsburgh. Greenwood says he is on the road approximately 100 days throughout the year, which helps him balance his family life, he has in Nashville with his wife Kim, former Miss Tennessee (1989) and two children Dalton and Parker, whom attend a private academy there. When asked if his children ever tour with him, Greenwood humbly stated, “I keep my business insulated from my children; not isolated”, he clarified, “they obviously know what I do and are very proud of me, but it is my job and their job is to get good grades and focus on their schoolwork; which they do as Honor Students.” He is also very proud of his wife’s accomplishments who is still very involved with the Miss USA pageants; she currently holds the title of executive director of the Miss Georgia USA, Miss Georgia Teen USA, Miss Mississippi USA, Miss Mississippi Teen USA, Miss Tennessee USA, and Miss

Tennessee Teen USA pageants. When asked how he discovered his interest in music and became successful with it, Greenwood reflected back to the age of 10 when he sang in the Baptist Church and noted he began performing professionally as early as the age of 12. By the time Greenwood was a senior in High School, he knew he was going to take his musical career to the professional level and turned down two different scholarships - one athletic for track and the other for music – and moved to Nevada to pursue his dreams. This is where Greenwood notes he began his fond admiration for the venues Casinos provide, and enjoys working with them to this day. He worked as a dealer for five years and orchestrated and arranged concerts for them going on 20 years until he was discovered by famed country music manager, Larry McFadden in 1979 at a show he was doing at the Nugget Casino in Sparks Nevada. McFadden then brought Greenwood to Nashville and signed him with MCA records. On this label, in 1981 Greenwood released the album ‘Turns Me Inside Out’ which was a huge success with 4 hit singles. This is when Greenwood knew he had made it big, having a hit album with the label that also represented top artists like Reba McEntyre and George Strait. Greenwood has since won

perimeter of the property where it borders Elizabeth, Filmore, and Parkside roads. The plan is to subdivide the perimeter of the property into housing lots with 80 foot dimension along the roadside. The board made it clear that they wanted to see more detail for the development of the factory site and the housing along the property edges. The board expressed the fear that only the outside of the property would be developed for housing, and that the center would remain unimproved. This raised the ire of one of the board members who stated emphatically, “No one thought that Fitzpatrick and Weller would go away, no one thought Signore would go away and look what happened. You need to let us see what you want to do.” At a point later in the meeting the same board member asked “how do we reuse our manufacturing

heritage?” The size of the area for the Commercial 3 zone came into question with one board member insisting that the comm 3 zone would cover only the foot print of the building and no more. But a question was raised about parking for the businesses in the building. Another board member stated the he was opposed to another 25 acres of commercial space in the village. At one point it appeared that the board and the developers were falling into a chicken/egg conundrum. Board members asked to see the exact outline of the area Mr. Sprague want to be comm 3, and other board members said that he couldn’t do that until they defined what could go into a comm 3 zone. Mr. Sprague also admitted that they might consider building apartments, or duplexes on the factory site. The board agreed to have a working session on December 6 to finalize language for the comm 3 zone. The board chair allowed that the Signore site should also be identified under the new comm 3 zone. In other business, a gentleman representing Phil Coles

addressed the board about plans for 34 East Washington. Mr. Coles wants to establish a kitchen accessory store on the ground floor and an apartment on the second floor. It was pointed out that the plans would need two special use permits and that Mr, Coles would have to appear before the ZBA. The board set December 20th for a public hearing for the plans. Mr. William Paladino addressed the board with plans to move the Kwik Fill Market to the corner of East Washington and Mill. The move would add four thousand square feet to the Kwik Fill store and create a total of four gas pumps at the business. The new store would incorporate the existing structure along Mill St. The existing brick building would be refurbished into a retail or commercial space. Mr. Paladino has plans to acquire the properties along the east edge of the lot, and is requesting that the properties be re-zone to commercial. This will allow them to establish employee parking and delivery space behind the existing building. A public hearing for the re-zoning will be announced at a later date.

many awards and accolades including a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U.”. Also in 1985, he took home the CMA award for ‘Song of the Year’ in honor of penning “God Bless the USA.” This song has been voted the most recognizable patriotic song in America. When asked what brings inspiration to his lyrics, Greenwood listed, “Things people say, lyrics in other songs…catch phrases-what’s the new thing.” He continued that he believes in messages from the heart explaining the majority of all song titles begin with “I” or “You” and “express people and relationships and heartfelt matters.” Greenwood’s newest album ‘I Want to Be In Your World’ (available at www.amazon.com) and a special book project entitled Does God Still Bless the USA (published by tatepublishering.com) prove his ongoing passion for his work. In his biography Greenwood notes, “I want my family to see what I do and not what I did.” Look for Greenwoods upcoming book tour in the Spring and don’t miss him this weekend, December 2-4, at the Seneca Allegany Casino and Hotel Events Center located at 777 Seneca Allegany Blvd. in Salamanca, NY. Tickets are $20 and can be obtained through www.ticketmaster.com. Two Winners will Recieve Giant Stuffed Stockings

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.

Good luck!
