Questions about Campfires, Forest Fires and Fire Bans?

Today, Port Alice is at a crossroads like never before. There
are many potential future scenarios: a thriving small mill
town, a retirement community, a tourism hot spot, and
more. What future do residents want to see?
What future is realistic?
What can Port Alice do to influence that future?
How have other places managed an economy in transition?
The Village of Port Alice is working with William Trousdale,
Colleen Hamilton and others from EcopPlan International to
develop an economic development strategy that answers these questions and is grounded in the values of
residents, the economic realities of the area, and the capacity and resources available.
Throughout the next few months, EcoPlan will analyze demographics and existing data, interview
residents, business owners and other stakeholders, and hold a community open house to acquire this
information.
Progress reports will be published in future editions of the Port Alice Rumble Sheet newsletter.
Port Alice’s economic development strategy, and the plans to implement it, will be presented in early 2016.
Visit on Club Night, September 16th, where EcoPlan will have a booth and welcomes your input!
Also please join us at the Community Open House hosted by EcoPlan on September 29th.

Attention Boaters
Get ready for boating season by getting your pleasure craft
licence and proof of competency now.
Pleasure craft licence
In Canada, all recreational boats with a motor of 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) or more must have a pleasure craft licence. A pleasure craft licence provides a unique identification number that must be displayed on your boat. This allows Search and Rescue personnel to access important information in an emergency.
Pleasure craft licences are valid for 10 years. Operating a pleasure craft without one may result in a $250 fine.
Proof of competency
Everyone who operates a power-driven boat also needs proof of competency—something that shows they understand the basic rules and how to safely operate a boat. The most common proof of competency is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. You can get the card by taking a boating safety course in-person or online, and passing the test at the end of the course. For more information on how to get your card or to get an Application for a Pleasure Craft Licence,
visit www.tc.gc.ca/boatingsafety or call the Boating Safety InfoLine at 1-800-267-6687.
Attention Crab & Prawn Trappers DO NOT ATTACH crab or prawn traps to the Rumble Beach Marina docks. Traps found will be removed daily and disposed of.

Municipal Office News
The Program works on the honour system
with a variety of sizes of PFDs available for
children to borrow. These can be used while
fishing on the dock, or taken on a vessel and
returned to the station near the Rumble Beach
Marina dock or one of the other local marinas
(Jeune Landing or Yacht Club).
The program is brought to Port Alice by The
Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue,
Unit #43 Port Alice, and The Port Alice Marine
Rescue Society, and is funded by the BC
Lotteries Community Gaming Grants.
Safety is a culture that is learned and
we hope that when our children become famil-
iarized with proper use and type of PFDs they
will practice safe boating for a lifetime.
The Port Alice Marine Rescue Society’s
Mission Statement is:
“To Save 100% of Lives at Risk”.
We attempt to fulfill this mission with
our Search and Rescue Unit and by
proactively promoting safe boating.

the movement arrived in Canada. North Island
Crisis & Counselling Centre Society is pleased to
announce that Mount Waddington Hospice
Support Services are available in many local
communities. Hospice supports are provided by
volunteers who have received specialized training
and completed criminal records checks.
Currently, hospice support services are available in
community for Port McNeill and Port Hardy resi-
dents. In the fall, hospice supports will be available
in Island Health facilities in those communities and
Eagle Ridge Manor.
The goal of our hospice support program is to
provide comfort, peace, dignity and compassion for
North Island residents and their families. Volunteers
are able to provide support by offering companion-
ship and resources, providing respite for families,
and by sitting vigil at the bedside of loved one.
If you or someone you care about are interested in
hospice supports, please contact the Hospice
Support Program at North Island Crisis & Counsel-
ling Centre Society for more information by calling:
(250) 949-8333
or by Emailing: [email protected].
You can also stop in and pick up one of our
pamphlets at the Crisis Centre or at any Island
Health facility.
All information is kept strictly confidential.
