What an amazing success story.... Castle Cary Choir celebrates its 50th year!
Founded in 1965 by David Vaux with a group of friends, who got together to sing and
raise money for good causes, the choir has performed hundreds of concerts and
raised thousands of pounds for charities and churches.
Highlights have been performing the Messiah with massed choirs at the Royal Albert
hall, fundraising for The Royal Star and Garter at Richmond, performing in Remelard,
France and more recently singing the world première of Omega and Alpha at Wells
Cathedral.
So don’t miss our big celebration concert at 7.30pm in Sherborne Abbey on Saturday
30th May when we will be singing some of our favorites of the last 50 years. We will
be joined by some of the very talented musicians we have performed with AND enjoy
a special guest performance by tenor Jonathan Ansell (2004 ‘X factor’ finalist with
G4).
Tickets for this exciting event are £15 and £10 and can be purchased from Maureen on 01963

3rd Sparkford Scout Group
Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
Swimarathon, Space and waiting lists!
The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of 3rd Sparkford have been busy with new badges, new skills and
their own fundraising efforts this term. Beavers completed their Space badge, learning
constellations and star gazing. Cubs have been learning navigation and using it on a night
hike. Scouts have been putting their practical skills to the test to achieve their camp cooking
badge, as well as working on their hobbies badge – a great way to discover what a talented group
of youngsters we have in the group.
A team from 3rd Sparkford took part in the Blackmore Vale Lions Club ‘Swimarathon’. The
group swam 100 laps in 55 minutes (200 lengths) and managed to collect £379 in sponsorship - £189.50 for the Scout group for our upcoming May and summer camps, and the other 50% will be split between NSPCC, Julia's House and Blackmore Vale Lions Charities Trust. We are delighted to have recruited two new leaders to the group, and still need more! Women and men who are keen to be part of our exciting, growing group of enthusiastic, active girls and boys, would be hugely welcome, as our waiting lists for new members grow all the time. If you would like to get involved or contribute we would love to hear from you – please Contact Helen Wooldridge 01963 440801 or [email protected]
We are still awaiting authorization for your list of contacts - hopefully this will be through
by next month - in the meantime if you do not know who your contact is please ring on
01963 440741. Spring comes and goes at the moment but once again lighter days –
more people getting around – garden tools, even mowers left out in the garden –
windows left open and sheds undone. Car windows open and so the list goes on all
inviting the opportunist thieves to help themselves.
Don’t forget those unwanted telephone calls just put the phone down, you don’t have
to talk to them. Cold callers at the door, have a look through the window and if you do
not know them or don’t like the look of them DON’T open the door & keep it locked.
Wishing you a Happy & Peaceful Easter.

Like many people, my knowledge of The Galapagos Islands
stretches little further than 'tropical paradise and large tortoise!'
However, our returning speaker this month, Angela Peet, gave us a
wonderful insight to the many other delights of this fascinating and
mysterious place. This delightful lady of a certain age and boundless
enthusiasm, kept us absorbed with photos and anecdotes. With
very little training and vast reservoirs of courage, the capacity and
eagerness to learn and an adventurous spirit that nothing seemed
to dent, she takes the most out of every aspect of her life.
Her pleasure of photography has taken her all over the world and
reliving her journeys through the talks that she gives, makes for a
lovely mornings entertainment.
The variety of our meetings and the companionship one gets on a
monthly basis for a very modest subscription makes belonging to the
Tuesday Group a joy.
The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the
first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more
information about our activities, please call
Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or

Bishop’s Message – April 2015
Take the Election prayerfully and seriously Elections are in the air. No, don’t turn over the page! I’m not joining the pre-election morass of words and promises. Though I do support my fellow bishops in our Pastoral Letter that caused such a fuss in February. You can find it on the diocesan website if you haven’t seen it. The basic message is: politics has become somewhat sterile and self-interested – so turn out and vote to improve things. But there are other elections also happening. . In your parish church, the Annual Parochial Church Meeting will occur during April. It’s an opportunity to choose churchwardens and church council members. And, maybe, even stand for election yourself. It’s too easy in church life to grumble about how ‘they’ do things: but perhaps the right thing is to offer to take part and help to do it better. Then there are elections to Deanery Synods. The old joke is that a Deanery Synod is ‘a collection of people waiting to go home.’ I would like that to change to ‘a collection of people listening to God and each other’- as together we navigate the tricky waters of the future of our churches. Actually, your Deanery Synod members are rather important. They have to elect a new Diocesan Synod this year – and I am very keen that our Synod helps grasp the many opportunities and challenges that the Church is currently facing. And lastly, a new General Synod is to be elected this autumn. Any church member can be a candidate, but Deanery Synod reps are critical, because they actually choose who gets elected. So, take the General Election prayerfully and seriously. But please also take our church elections seriously too. You might be one of the people God is calling to serve his church by taking on a role as PCC member, Deanery, Diocesan or General Synod representative. It could be you! That is something to think and pray about. With warm best wishes +Peter Bath and Wells
RECTOR’S LETTER
APRIL 2015
Resurrection without crucifixion is only half the truth, Crucifixion without resurrection is only half the truth.
If we try to have one without the other, we destroy the big mystery.
Everybody loves a winner! Look at the smiles in a crowd all the time their side’s doing well. Yet take another look when they lose. Whether its politics or sport cries of sack the
manager, sack the players, sack the director seem the obvious solution as anger and blame begin to spill out.
Over the course of the coming week we will be making the journey with Jesus through the last days of his life and what a roller coaster it is. The roars of applause from the
crowd on Palm Sunday wanting to hail Jesus as king quickly turn sour when one by one his followers chose to desert, deny or betray him. One of the shocking facts about Good Friday is that those who hailed Jesus as their king are nowhere to be seen at the cross. Even Peter, his dearest friend, bolts when the going gets tough. On the one hand Peter
feels let down, Jesus is not the kind of king Peter was expecting to see. Yet equally Peter has let Jesus down and there’s a sense of guilt in his heart which he cannot face right now. Yet as Jesus hangs dying on the cross is this the end of everything? Well actually
no, because in the words of a famous hymn.
‘They cut me down and I leapt up high I am the life that will never, never die.’
At its heart the Easter message combines both death and life. It’s interesting that among the first people Jesus appears to after his resurrection are those who doubted,
deserted and denied him. Yet through these people the message lives on and continues to inspire in our day. When we say the words ‘Christ is risen, he is risen indeed ’ in our
churches on Easter day we will be joining with billions of Christians in affirming that in a turbulent world by God’s grace and through his mercy:
Goodness is still stronger than evil, Love is still stronger than hate: Light is still stronger than darkness, life is still stronger than death;
And that’s a message we all need to hear. May I wish you all a very Happy Easter With my love and prayers
The Revd Rose.
Details of our Good Friday Pilgrimage also to be found in the magazine.
