Hello everyone,

Welcome back to St Patrick’s College after your Easter holiday, and welcome to Issue 1 of the St Patrick’s student newsletter, The Vibe, following our pilot edition at the end of last year.

Since our pilot issue we have been extremely active on your behalf. We have organised a whole series of new activities under our Student Experience programme which you can read about in this newsletter.

Our sports programme has made a promising start. The men’s football team has been training hard and has arranged a series of matches. Our women’s netball and basketball teams have held practice sessions and are now looking to organise some games against other teams. Sophelia and Ijah in our Student Experience team are busy preparing for our Health and Wellbeing Programme which will take place throughout the month of May, to help welcome in the summer! So if you want to know more about how to improve your health and fitness through diet, good nutrition and exercise, watch out for posters giving details of the exciting activities which we have planned to

help you get into tip top condition!

I am very pleased that the St Patrick’s Student Council is now up and running. The elections duly took place, 8 places on the Council have now been filled, and the Council has also held its first meeting, focused on student needs and issues.

You can find further details of these activities in this newsletter. I hope you are all refreshed after your break, and have returned with your batteries fully charged, and yourselves full of enthusiasm. Remember this is YOUR Newsletter and we very much rely on your ideas to fill its pages and provide material of interest to your fellow students. We welcome any contributions, serious or interesting, amusing or thought-provoking. Don’t be backwards in coming forwards! Don’t be shy, even if you have never written an article before.

Please either email [email protected] or contact the Student Experience Dept. who will help you put pen to paper, or guide your fingers across the keyboard. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hello everyone,

Aig, your Student Council President here!

I am pleased to inform you that we have finally formed the Student Council. The Council consists of Student Officers from the different schools in the college.

This Student Council is a first for St Patrick’s College and we are excited and eager to help voice the views, issues and ideas of the student body to the college management and at the same time relaying the response back to the students.

As the Student Council, we are not here to enforce but to engage. We will also help create awareness amongst the students when necessary and the first topic on the agenda is DISCIPLINE: Respect – give it to get it.

This has been one of the most important issues in the college and the Student Council has been tasked with making students aware that disrespecting members of staff will not be condoned in the college. We will be using various measures and methods to convey this message to students, starting with the college newsletter. We intend to use other means to create awareness so I suggest students stay tuned!

Striving to ‘unlock your potential’ they take great pride, time and effort to ensure that this message reaches all St Patrick’s students. The new Student Experience Department provides a fresh outlook on the college experience and generates ideas on how to further engage the students. With the department only being 3 months old the SE team has surely made an impact on staff and students with its hands-on, proactive approach. Within a short space of time the team has organised

a Business Showcase, a London Stock Exchange trip, an Open Mic night, developed an Entrepreneurship project, student/staff football team and initiated elections for a new Student Council. The team also implemented and managed games and attractions at the St Patrick’s Freshers’ Fair on 13th February. They have been very busy! The Student Experience team has only just begun, look out for what else it has in store!

The Student Experience department is taking St Patrick’s College by storm with its refreshing, innovative deliverables setting an example of what an educational experience really means.

Our established Football team ‘The Green Machine’ will be training once a month at the Columbus Centre, Southwark. Training is already in full swing with Ijah & Ola coaching.

The St Patrick’s Green Machine is always looking for new talent so the door is open to all students who are interested. The team will be representing St Patrick’s in their brand new football kit that will

feature the logo of our sponsor, Circle Sports, on a dark green shirt with black shorts to match.

So if you would like to be one of the lucky few wearing the strip, come and speak to Jonathan in Room 360 and he will provide you with info on our next available try-outs. We are also keen to see the rest of you showing your support for the team in our forthcoming 11-a-side match.

Lastly, summer is approaching and many will be thinking about achieving the beach body they long for! Why not put your name forward for the soon-to-be-announced Jogging Club? This is part of our push to increase the general health and wellbeing of our students, which will see other activities appear in the calendar. As they say - “A healthy body means a healthy mind!”

LEADERSHIP ACADEMYwith Mark T Jones

St Patrick’s College officially launched its new Leadership Academy on 12th

March.

On that day, Mark T Jones, leadership trainer and author of several books and numerous articles, delivered a guest lecture on Leadership at the School of Business Management. Students enjoyed his remarkable, dynamic and thought-provoking motivational master class.

Muhammad Azam, Head of St Patrick’s Business School, explained that the College will soon be offering new specialist courses in areas such as entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation and productivity under the Leadership Academy programme.

Mr Jones’ lecture was organised as part of the SEED programme. SEED is St Patrick’s Student Evolvement & Entrepreneurship Development Club,

which organises a regular programme of visiting guest speakers, industry visits, and workshops for the benefit of our students, to allow them to network with leading entrepreneurs and develop links with commerce and industry to support their own enterprise.

Keep your eyes peeled for news of more exciting events

organised by the SEED team in St Patrick’s Student

Experience Department!

Benjamin Dunkwu, HND Network Engineering and Technology student talks to The Vibe about one of his favourite topics – football!

What do you think about the sporting activities at the college? I am happy that the college has invested in sporting activities. Obviously at this stage there is still a lot to be done, but progress is being made which is great!

What kind of improvements would you like to see with regard to sports opportunities?I would like to see continuity and continued investment in the sports programme. Considering the level of involvement in leagues and competitions at other colleges, I would like to see us get involved as soon as possible.

Do you participate in any other leagues? Yes, I play in the South Spartan Midland League.

When was the last time you had an opportunity to play? On Sunday 30th at the college’s recent training session.

Which football team do you support?I support Chelsea FC!

Do you think Liverpool can win the Premiere League this season? No chance! But I’m a Chelsea fan so I would say that haha!

Nelly Kibirige, HND Business Management student tells us all about the St Patrick’s Debating Society.

Do you thing the debating society is a good idea?I think the debating society is a brilliant idea. It’s something that has been needed for a while, but people didn’t know what they were missing! It is a great way to bring students together to have an open, honest, intelligent discussion about everyday issues that they have an opinion on.

Which topics would you like to debate on?I would like to see more current affairs topics discussed, but to be fair, seeing as the debating society is here to stay, I feel that we should discuss different topics every time to give different students from different schools a chance to cover a topic relevant to them.

Here’s one for you - Rihanna or Beyonce, who is a better artist?I feel that overall, Rihanna and Beyoncé have the same abilities as artists and performers, however, based on the voice alone, Beyoncé has the best musical pitch!

Business Management student, Adaneshia Halstead, talks to The Vibe about St Patrick’s recent Business Showcase.

How did you hear about the Business Showcase?I heard about it via email.

What did you think of the event? It was a very good event especially with it being the first one. However, it would have been good if there had been more notice for students to take part.

How does this make you feel about your college?I think it encourages students to excel and also enables them to network with each other, especially with those who are studying the same subject or have a skill they may be able to utilise.

Did the showcase inspire you to develop your own business?Yes actually the students were really responsive to what I had to offer. We also picked up tips and experience to improve for future events.

What tips or advice were you able to pick up from the show case?Always make sure I have enough business cards and to keep a guest book to collect data, and make good use of leads for potential customers.

Who do you think is a better businessman - Alan Sugar or Richard Branson?Richard Branson, but I admire them both and appreciate their different management styles.

OUR VERY FIRST OPEN MIC NIGHT

at St Patrick’s

St Patrick’s held their first Open Mic Night in March. It was an amazing, soulful evening, focused on the spoken word, poetry and singing. The night was filled with talented

individuals creating a warm vibe allowing students to relax and enjoy the night.

The Spoken Word is poetry intended for on-stage performance, rather than exclusively designed for the page. Whilst often associated with hip-hop culture, it also has strong ties to storytelling, modern poetry, post-modern performance and monologue theatre, as well

as jazz, blues, and folk music. There were performances from students and staff with a variety of solo to group acts, singing, rapping and poetry. Open Mic Night showed that

St Patrick’s is filled with talent! Special guest spoken word performer, Mark ‘Mr T’ Thompson topped the night with his quirky, vibrant, down to earth performance that had the audience

hanging on to his every word leaving them wanting more.

All in all, a fantastic evening was enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to the Student Experience department for organising the night!

The EDSML group were out in force to spread Love and the Valentine’s Day spirit around St Patrick’s as they sold roses, cards & chocolates on Valentine’s Day.

The Business group taught by Muhammad Azam had been set a challenge to launch the LovEnterprise event within two weeks. Putting their entrepreneurial skills and team work to the test, they worked as a certified company from budgeting to

marketing, designing to distributing.

Making the day even more special, the group gave away a raffle prize of two tickets to the Valentine’s Day Party to one lucky person!

So did they break even or perhaps even make a profit? They needn’t have worried as the event was a success, they sold almost everything! Bring on next year’s Valentine’s Day!

This was the first event under the S.E.E.D (Student Evolvement & Entrepreneurship Development) initiative and if it is anything to go by, we are in for lots of treats throughout the year!

Congratulations to the EDSML Group and their lecturer for their creativity and for producing a wonderful atmosphere and event.

LOVE & ENTERPRISE at St Patrick’s

Love & Enterprise was on everyone’s lips as Business students launched their ‘LovEnterprise’ event.

At the last count there were 17 St Patrick’s Alumni working at the college as lecturers or administrators. So, naturally, they have got together to form a club. The St Patrick’s Alumni Association has been born! Congratulations to all concerned!

At the SEED event which took place on 25th March, many current students expressed an interest in joining the Association and receiving career and employment advice from recent St Patrick’s graduates who have blazed a trail which others can follow.

We have ambitious plans to put the Association on a formal footing and increase the membership dramatically. We are also planning a series of events, including a social networking evening and a careers day, so that more current and former students can keep in touch with developments in their alma mater, and contribute to the success of the group.

LAUNCH OF DEBATING SOCIETY

The first St Patrick’s Debate run by the Debating Society got off to a fiery start in Room 510. Students from Law, Business and Hospitality dived in to topics such as ‘Facebook or Twitter’, ‘Can money bring you happiness – yes or no?’ and ‘Should the rich be taxed - yes or no?’

The new debating society was created to encourage students who want to share, discuss and voice their opinions on various topics, as well as defining the art of being a great debater. All those who attended brought charisma, passion, knowledge and, most of all, entertainment to the floor.

So successful was the event that we hope to make this a permanent fortnightly fixture on Thursday lunchtimes. Whether or not you are the next Gandhi, Mandela or Abraham Lincoln come forth and join us!

St. Patrick’s Learning Centre Assistant, Sophia de Koning, was invited as a speaker at the ‘Translation and Cinema: Multiplicity of Perspectives, Points of Contact’ conference, which took place in the Ivan Franko National University, Ukraine, on 20th and 21st March.

The conference engaged in many interesting discussions on the nature of translation (subtitling, dubbing and audio-visual translation for the blind) in cinema. The key note

speakers were Dr. Charlotte Bosseaux (University of Edinburgh) and Dr. Agnieszka Szarkowska (University of Warsaw). They discussed the role of the voice in original films and the dubbed version and methods of audio-visual translation, which differ in each country. Sophia talked about the dubbing process of animated Disney films from American English to Dutch and the discriminatory usage of dialect speech and foreign accents in both versions. Her research, which she

undertook to complete her Master’s thesis, will also be the topic of her forthcoming presentation at the Sociolinguistics Circle Conference on 28th March in Groningen, The Netherlands.

She is also working closely with our Student Experience Team in setting up St. Patrick’s ‘Debating Society’, making use of her expertise in linguistics to help empower and educate students on the importance of effective communication skills.

Hayk held the presentation in front of a room full of St. Patricks’ staff and students for HART (Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust). He was raising money for them by parachuting from a plane with 2 friends in Cambridge on the 12th March.

At that point Hayk was halfway towards his fundraising target of £1000 and he has a personal interest in the work HART does as they operate in his homeland of Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan) – although all who live there are of Armenian Heritage.

The presentation was to raise awareness of the suffering in places such as South Sudan, Nigeria and Nagorno-Karabakh, to highlight the lack of international media coverage of the area and the work HART continues to do.

HART Representatives, Lizzie & Ericka were in attendance to watch Hayk’s presentation and offer more insight into the organisation. Hayk was also interviewed by Business Lecturer Ian Tindale on his progress leading up to the parachute jump.

To find out more you can visit our

Facebook page or the St Patrick’s College website. There are HART

including leaflets with information on how your donations help

those in need.

ST PATRICK’S FIRST BUSINESS SHOWCASE

Promoting entrepreneurship and enterprise, the very first ‘Business Showcase’ at St-Patricks was a great success! The event was filled with staff and students supporting

our industry-savvy business students who took part with professionalism, creativity and outstanding exhibits. The event, held last Wednesday afternoon, was organised

by the business department and the Student Experience team.

Head of the School of Business Management, Muhammad Azam, conceptualised the idea to create an event that would give students the opportunity to demonstrate their business ventures and entrepreneurship skills. The students proved that they are no longer beginners in the business

industry with their knowledgeable pitches and marketing. From books to online, fashion to food, the event hosted a variety of businesses all under one roof.

It was the first event of its kind at the college but certainly won’t be the last - there is plenty more in store for the students of St Patricks!

The day was jam-packed with games such as apple fishing, knock-over-the-cans and hula hooping. Competitions included a football challenge, press-up challenge and ‘Who Wants to be a St Patricks

Winner’. Great prizes were given out throughout the day, not forgetting the karaoke and music on the main stage bringing unity amongst our students and staff like never before!

The Student Experience team was going for gold. The event left students and staff alike with the feel -good factor – on a Monday no less!Ireland would be proud!
