It feels like reading an old instruction manual. That’s because it is. It’s been called “The Priests’ Manual.” Some of the guidelines make sense, and others seem outlandish. People wonder, “Why does God have so many rules? What’s with all the sacrifices and punishments? It makes God sound mean!” It won’t be long before our Five Day Reading Plan leads us to Leviticus. The tent of meeting (or the tabernacle) was the portable dwelling place of God before Solomon built the temple. Tent-talk surrounds Leviticus, and it gives important clues. Leviticus begins with people outside of the tent. Exodus 40:35 says, “Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because...the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.” Leviticus begins with Moses outside the tent. Israel’s sin damaged their relationship with God; they couldn’t live in God’s holy presence, only outside of it. Now, look at the first verse of Numbers (the next book). “The Lord spoke to Moses... in the tent of meeting….” Something changed! What happened? Leviticus. The Bible Project says, “God takes the initiative to provide a way to reconcile his relationship to rebellious Israel. Leviticus is all about God’s grace!” God continued to take the initiative through Jesus Ch rist, who came to “fulfill the law!” (Matthew 5:17). 2. Let God Get Your Goat. The Day of Atonement lies at the center of Leviticus (chapter 16). Israel had to make annual atonement for their sins. The priest would take two goats, one was a sacrifice for the people’s sins, and the other was a scapegoat. The priest would confess Israel’s sins over the scapegoat, “transferring” them to the goat. Then he’d release it, carrying their sins away. Leviticus reminds us that sin is a deadly serious business. It requires sacrifice and atonement. This story likely sounds familiar. On the cross, Jesus performed the perfect and final Day of Atonement. Jesus is both our sacrifice and our scapegoat! 3. Check Your Reflection. If I had to pick one verse to summarize Leviticus, I would choose 11:45, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” Leviticus calls Israel to reflect God’s purity and holiness to the world. Notice that God doesn’t tell people to be perfect and make them figure it out alone. God takes the initiative to provide them with the means to reflect His holiness. God’s grace continued in Jesus, “the image of the invisible God,” the pure human reflection of God’s purity and holiness (Colossians 1:15). Jesus fulfilled God’s purpose, and, through Him, we have the joy of growing in holiness--polishing our mirror so we can reflect the holiness of God to the world! Keep these tips in mind as you read Leviticus and let this precious book inspire you to seek God’s grace for your holiness. T he nations still yearn for it. ~~Bro. To make Disciples for Christ Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit with Ministry and love to

others, teaching the Holy Scriptures, preaching the gospel, loving and serving the Lord.

3 Tips for Finding Inspiration in Leviticus

Leviticus, the third book of the Bible, is notoriously tricky. It feels like reading an old instruction manual. That’s because it is. It’s been

called “The Priests’ Manual.” Some of the guidelines make sense, and others seem outlandish. People wonder, “Why does God have so

many rules? What’s with all the sacrifices and punishments? It makes God sound mean!”

It won’t be long before our Five Day Reading Plan leads us to Leviticus. People will undoubtedly ask, “Am I supposed to get anything

out of this?”

Here are three tips for finding inspiration in Leviticus.

1. Watch the Tent-Talk. The tent of meeting (or the tabernacle) was the portable dwelling place of God before Solomon built

the temple. Tent-talk surrounds Leviticus, and it gives important clues. Leviticus begins with people outside of the tent.

Exodus 40:35 says, “Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because...the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”

Leviticus begins with Moses outside the tent. Israel’s sin damaged their relationship with God; they couldn’t live in God’s

holy presence, only outside of it.

Now, look at the first verse of Numbers (the next book). “The Lord spoke to Moses...in the tent of meeting….” Something

changed! What happened? Leviticus. The Bible Project says, “God takes the initiative to provide a way to reconcile his

relationship to rebellious Israel. Leviticus is all about God’s grace!” God continued to take the initiative through Jesus Christ,

who came to “fulfill the law!” (Matthew 5:17).

2. Let God Get Your Goat. The Day of Atonement lies at the center of Leviticus (chapter 16). Israel had to make annual

atonement for their sins. The priest would take two goats, one was a sacrifice for the people’s sins, and the other was a

scapegoat. The priest would confess Israel’s sins over the scapegoat, “transferring” them to the goat. Then he’d release it,

carrying their sins away.

Leviticus reminds us that sin is a deadly serious business. It requires sacrifice and atonement. This story likely sounds

familiar. On the cross, Jesus performed the perfect and final Day of Atonement. Jesus is both our sacrifice and our scapegoat!

3. Check Your Reflection. If I had to pick one verse to summarize Leviticus, I would choose 11:45, “You shall be holy, for I

am holy.” Leviticus calls Israel to reflect God’s purity and holiness to the world. Notice that God doesn’t tell people to be

perfect and make them figure it out alone. God takes the initiative to provide them with the means to reflect His holiness.

God’s grace continued in Jesus, “the image of the invisible God,” the pure human reflection of God’s purity and holiness

(Colossians 1:15). Jesus fulfilled God’s purpose, and, through Him, we have the joy of growing in holiness--polishing our

mirror so we can reflect the holiness of God to the world!

Keep these tips in mind as you read Leviticus and let this precious book inspire you to seek God’s grace for your holiness. The nations

still yearn for it. ~~Bro. Jim

We all know the Bible is important. But, let’s be honest, it can be hard to understand. It’s a huge book (and it’s really 66 books!). It comes from a different time. Is it a list of rules? Is it relevant to us? How do the pieces fit together? In this series, we will look at the big picture to see the overarching story, the single drama of scripture in 6 movements: Creation, Fall, Israel, Jesus, Church, & New Creation. We will invite you to renew your reading of scripture; equip you with a better understanding of how the individual bits of the Bible fit together into a seamless whole; and inspire you to see your place in the unfolding drama of the Bible.

Congratulations, also, to the Grandparents,

Hugh & Mary Ruth Hamilton, and Great-Grandmothers,

SPREAD THE NEWS

Read 1 Corinthians 16 : 13 – 14, NIV

A captain saw a soldier running as fast as he

could toward the rear during a battle.

“Stop!” he shouted. “Don’t you know there’s a

battle going on? Where are you going?”

“We’re winning the battle,” said the boy.

“And I’m going to spread the news all over

France.”

We’re fighting a battle against Satan and sin;

and we’re on the winning side! There’s a time to

speak up and broadcast, but there’s also a time to

stand up and battle.

It takes courage to be a Christian. The

Christian faith isn’t a religion of helpless

husbands, weak wives, spineless spinsters and

bashful bachelors.

The Bible says, “Stand firm in your faith; be

men of courage; be strong.”

Prayer: Grant unto us, Father, the sustaining

and strengthening blessings of Thy grace.

Inspire us with faith and fortitude, making us

faithful and fearless: through Christ. Amen.
