TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The L , our God, protected us along our entire journey (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Christ nourishes and cherishes the church because we are members of his body (Ephesians 5:21-32 [5:2a, 25-32]). Gospel — We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:60-69). HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICE In the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serv-ing the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived in-side his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many “strangers” every day in stores or traf-fic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God.

JUSTICE AND PEACE NOTES

“If you want peace, work for justice” - - - Pope Paul VI Catholics have a responsibility to promote peace built upon jus-tice. Peace is not merely the absence of war or the fragile exhaus-tion that exists in the aftermath of conflict, when lives have been torn apart, relationships broken, infrastructures destroyed and homes demolished. Rather, the God-given peace (Shalom) that our creator desires for us is built on justice, where everything and everyone in the created order is in right relationship with each other and can reach their God-given potential. If we ignore the inequality that exists between those who have too much and those who have too little, and the mounting tensions that such polarization brings, we only pay lip service to the pur-suit of peace and God’s law of justice is denigrated. Real peace needs to be worked at, like a life-long relationship. It is built by those who direct their efforts to its establishment, day after day. Its pursuit means listening to the voice of the oppressed and being challenged to action. It means seeing all humanity as our brothers and sisters and honoring other people’s development, as well as our own. And it means building a future for the next generations so they can know life in all its fullness and peace in its entirety. Question for discussion: Do we have an obligation to hold our nation’s leaders responsible for seeking justice and peace between nations? How can we as individuals translate our desire for jus-tice and peace into action?

CLOUD OF WITNESSES The Saints Renew the Church

St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most well-known saints in the Catholic Church. His influence and example even spill out beyond the borders of Catholicism. Who was Francis? Why does his life still inspire and touch so many people? What can he teach us about holiness? Director of Adult Faith Formation, Michael Lewandowski, will tell Francis' story and cover many aspects of the saint's life including his dramatic conversion, love of poverty, affinity with creation, his rigorous self-discipline and sacrificial spirit, the encounter with the wolf of Gubbio, the founding of the Poor Clares, and his holy stigmata.
