To say Chevrolet came out with a new car this year is a huge understatement. The new Chevrolet was new-new, totally and completely, from the X-member frame to the 117.5-inch wheelbase, to the brand new sheet metal, to the interiors, to the engines – everything was so new even the Series designations were changed. Chevrolet not only regained its first place spot from Ford, it also claimed 29% of the total U.S. market for 1958.

Richard and Mary had been searching for a 1958 Chevy since they had owned two in past years with Richard owning the first one when he was 19 years old. In 2016 Mary found this convertible for sale in Hemmings Motor News. The car Mary found was in Lebannon, Maine and they bought it in May

of 2016 and had it shipped to their winter home in Alemeda Isles.

Richard has performed considerable work on the car to bring it to the fine condition you see it in today.

Richard and Mary have been coming to Florida as snowbirds (known in our Club as snow members) since 2007 from their summer home in Millbridge, Maine) and are now permanent Florida residents.

They became acquainted with our Club while at a former “Gazebo” show in Centennial Park and while visiting with George Nubile.

Thank you both for the nice ride in that great convertible the day I did the photo shoot for this article.

2 July 2017 Owner’s Manual

Here it is June 15th as I write this message. Can anyone tell me where all the time goes?

Anyhow, on June 4th several Club members and myself attended the “Beer & Brew Bash” at Centennial Park on the invitation from the Vintage Motor Car Club. As we proceeded to do some networking and investigation of this event, there were twenty five cars all together of which five were our Members... Our Club member, Doug Wood and his wife Carol thanked us for helping them promote this event and we look forward to some joint adventures in the future.

We held our Board meeting on June 6th and discussed a plethora of things. Keith Lewis was invited to bring us up to date on our Car Show which is now February 11, 2018

After a lengthy discussion and approval of new sponsorship program and fliers, Keith talked about our membership stepping up and asked that perhaps we could encourage members to bring in some new sponsors and advertisers for our event. We had twenty four sponsors who we carried last year when we really had only seventeen.. So we could use some help in this area? Any suggestions, contact any Officer or Director.

Our June 12th General Meeting was held and we were fortunate enough to have a presentation put on for us by The Southeastern Guide Dog of Florida. Ed & Sue Bizewecki and their student “Steve” a black Labrador retriever entertained and educated us on the rigors of training these dogs. The failure rate is 62% and then those dogs enter another program to help Veterans with PTSD and the failure rate is similar. The ones left over, go to local law enforcement for K-9 training. Truly an amazing trek these

folks take and their dedication. The 50/50 raffle $102 was donated to SEGD.

Also, on the agenda was our Scholarship presentations. We had seven $1,000 scholarships to hand out. The winners were: Patch Chen, Chris Galeone, Emma Gallagher, Joy Jacobs, Bryanna Mananna, Alexandra Mills and Alejandro Zeledon.

Only two showed up for their awards, Pat Chen and Alexandra Mills. Judy Zangwill explained that because of the extraneous schedules for starting their College careers the absentees had started their first session of school and were unable to attend.

I would like to remind all of our upcoming events on June 24th we will be meeting @ Ideal Classic Cars and heading out to Manasota Key Tour 10:00 am w/ lunch @ Stephano’s Restaurant in Englewood. June 28th will be our Club luncheon which will be @ Left Coast Seafood , NO CLUB MEETING WILL BE HELD IN JULY! July 14th is the Sixth Annual National Antique & Classic Car Day plus our Venice AACA Car Tour . We are expected to participate in this event, by driving our Collector Cars and support the hobby. Our tour will begin at Ideal Classic Cars @ 2:30pm and leave @ 3:00pm for a fun trip around Venice and finishing at The Italian American Club of Venice for a sumptuous dinner at 4:00pm.

On August 19th we will be having an Ice Cream Social at Sweet Scoops in Englewood or in the vernacular of the residents, KRINKLEWOOD?

If you have any questions on these tours please call : Julie Petree – 941-412-1082 or Bev Arnold – 941-483-3204.

Hope everyone has a good summer!

During the 1890’s Justin Entz created a design that used a gasoline engine to power a generator which then sent the electrical power to an electric motor which drove the wheels. There were no gears that would require shifting so the operation would be smooth and quiet due to the electrical power. Attempts were made to create a prototype of the design but none ever worked.

In 1912 Walter Baker of Baker Electric in Cleveland purchased the patent. Raymond and Ralph Owen of New York created the Owen Magnetic which they produced under license from Baker. R.M Owen was absorbed by Baker in 1915. Baker had since merged with Rauch & Lang, who were well known for their electric cars. Together, they focused their skills on creating an electric-gasoline car.

Production began in New York in 1915 and shifted to Cleveland from 1916-1919. The Owen Magnetic was a technically advanced automobile that was full of style and fashion. A variety of speeds were available by turning the control wheel mounted on the steering wheel. It was marketed as ‘The Car with a Thousand Speeds’ and carried a factory price tag of nearly $4000.

During World War I the company focused on war production and ceased production of the Owen Magnetic. After the war a factory was established at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania where production continued until 1921. The vehicles produced there were known as Crown Magnetics. In total, there were around 700 examples of the Owen Magnetic produced with only four known to exist today.

Venice Regional Chapter AACA General Car Club Membership Meeting Minutes - June 12, 2017Respectively submitted by Julie Petree, Secretary

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President George Nubile.

The Club pledged allegiance to the flag, and Rod Dimon gave the opening prayer.

The Secretary confirmed a quorum of 52 members attending.

The Southeastern Guide Dogs program was presented by Ed and Sue Beziecki and their dog in training Steve. It was an enjoyable and informative program. Thanks was given to Bev Arnold who contacted Ed and Sue to put this together for the Club.

A motion was made by Mark Eichner to donate the raffle money from tonight to the Southeastern Guide Dogs Organization. This was seconded by George Lucyk. Was voted on and passed. $102.00 will be sent to them.

Judy Zangwill explained the scholarship program and thanked her committee, Lois Sinclair, Tom Henderson, Lynn Slevin and George Nubile. The scholarship winners were: Patch Chen, Christopher Galeone, Emma Gallagher, Joy Jacob, Bryanna Mamma, Alexandra Mills and Alejandro Zeledon. Judy spoke about each winner and their intentions for their future. Only Patch Chen and Alexandria Mills were present to accept their scholarships. They each spoke about their hopes for their education.
