President’s Message By Clay Beck
Dear Vapor Trail Vettes members,
We are well into the Autumn and the weather
is great. We as a club had a very busy couple
of weeks in this mouth of October. Our 14th
annual event the "Blast" though the numbers
were down it appeared that everyone had a
great time. It was fun for me to see all the
out of town members come to our event so
we could get caught up from the last time
that we've seen each other. This event had
the usual poker runs, to car show and hospi-
tality evening on Friday. The funkhana was
also great fun to the dinner and awards on
Saturday evening.
The next Saturday, we've completed our last
autocross of the year, October 13th. We had
a record number of drivers that signed up for
the event. 55 sign ups which was 5 more
than we normally allow, but we accepted
them from the wait list and had a large event.
It is time for all to renew their memberships.
After renewal we should be shipped our new
membership cards for this next year
2019. Renewals are $25 primary and $10 for
a spouse or youth unless you are a new
member.
Remember to give Larry Wright your nomina-
tion for officers for this next year. We need all
of the members to get this very important
thing done so we can go into next year with
success. Please contact Larry and let him
know of your thoughts. And thank you Larry
for your help and as always your great.
Have a good day, Clay Beck

October 4, 2018 VTV Meeting Minutes By Chuck Robertson/Beverly Erickson
In attendance: Cliff & Beverly Erickson, Bill & Pat-
ty Santmyer, Jan Webb, Dave Schultz, Chuck
Robertson, Brenda Parks, Gerry White, Gale
Haugen, Jeff & Holly Palmer, Larry Wright, Clay
Beck and Bruce Potter.
The meeting was opened at 6:30 by Clay, and the
first action was to recognize the October birthday:
Hector Paz.
Approval of Meeting Minutes
Clay asked for a motion to approve the Septem-
ber minutes. The motion was made by Bill and
seconded by Chuck. All in attendance approved.
New Business – Clay Beck
Gale discussed the status of the Blast. Cliff and
Beverly are in charge of the auto show. Jan will
help Patty with the food for Hospitality Night,
Dave will help Clay with the funkhana, Joan Perry
had picked up the drinks, Chuck will do registra-
tion and run the Rolling Thunder game, Roberta
had the raffle baskets ready and Jan and Holly
(and anyone else interested) will assist with sell-
ing the raffle and 50/50 tickets. Gale said she
hadn’t heard back from Home Motors about bor-
rowing their banner, so Clay will go by and check
with them. In response to a question from Gale,
Clay said that he would be bringing the trailer, so
all the equipment and game items will be on
hand. He also said he didn’t like how the hotel
blocks off the parking, so he planned on putting
out cones instead. It was agreed that helpers
would show up around p.m. on Friday to start
getting ready. Gale said she had made badges
with a schedule of events for the workers.
Clay asked who was going to work the autocross.
He took a show of hands. Clay said that he felt
he had enough helpers for set-up on Friday as
well. He had notified the food vendor and ar-
ranged for the portable johns as well. The only
thing left was to send an email so that Chuck
could pick up the TSA badges. He added that the
Norris’ would be in competing for the first time
this year.
The next item was nominations for next year’s
officers. Larry will run the election again and
asked for two nominations for each position. If
you nominate someone, please be sure you ask
them first to ensure that they are willing.
October 4, 2018 VTV Meeting Minutes By Chuck Robertson/Beverly Erickson
New Business – Clay Beck
Send nominations by email if possible, but Larry
will take phone calls as well. Bill asked if any of
the current officers did not want to repeat their
duties again and no one spoke up. Larry wanted
the nominations by the 15th and would announce
the slate by the next meeting.
The Christmas dinner was scheduled for December
8th. Chuck is offering his house for the event but
doesn’t know how to arrange the event. Gale said
she and Patty would work with Chuck to get it set
up. Bill asked about charging members who did
not participate during the year. The feeling was
that they shouldn’t pay, but Clay was open to fur-
ther discussion.
Treasurers Report—Chuck Robertson
The treasurer’s report was given by Chuck. A mo-
tion was made by Gale to approve the report and
was seconded by Larry. The report was approved
by all present. Larry asked about annual dues.
He was told that Gale reminded Chuck that he
needed checks to the Blast to pay for all the hotel
expenses.
Vice President Report – Gerry White
Gerry then gave the VP’s report. He asked who
was interested in participating in the Pismo Clam
Festival Parade. Only a couple of folks were inter-
ested, so it was decided not to enter the club.
Gerry asked if the members were still interested in
going to the Reagan Library.
Patty asked him to check what other events were
happening. Gerry pointed out that most events
incurred an extra cost, but most present didn’t
care about that. He then mentioned the Veterans
Day car show at the Santa Maria VA Clinic. Chuck
reported that it would be on November 7th and the
Elks would be putting on a great BBQ.
Chuck didn’t know the number of parking slots
available, but he would check and let everyone
know. A poll was taken, and it looked like there
would be about 9 members bringing their cars.
Chuck would also notify the SLO Vettes. Gerry
also said that the dedication of the Pismo Pier will
be after the parade if anyone wanted to go.

October 4, 2018 VTV Meeting Minutes By Chuck Robertson/Beverly Erickson
Governor’s Report – Clay Beck for Gale
Haugen
Clay and Bill went to the last governor’s meeting
and he let Gale know that the calendar was open
for next year and wanted Gale to enter our events
to ensure that there are no conflicts. Clay has
also coordinated our dates with the Porsche club.
Bill suggested that we make the Blast the same
weekend every year so that other clubs can plan
well in advance. Gale said this was possible, but
it had to be after October 1st so that attendees
can get the discounted room rates. Clay an-
nounced that Doug Nicoll was in third place as a
driver in the region. Clay let everyone know that
NCCC membership cards will be sent out again
next year, avoiding the problems last year. The
membership drive opens Oct 15th and Clay said
everyone needs to have their checks into the club
by November 15th. Renewal rates are $25 for sin-
gle and $35 for a couple. Another item Clay pas-
sé on was that next year there will only be three
regional governor’s meetings, February 2nd, May
11th, and September 29th. This was apparently
due to low participation. Clay said the 2019 na-
tional convention was being held July 7-12 in
Denver Colorado. Gale asked if the governors
had given us our awards from last year, and Clay
said not yet.
Around the room:
Around the room: Bill said that the best thing
about going to the governor’s meeting was that
Clay hauled the hardtop for his corvette down to a
restoration shop in Victorville. Bill added that he
has been procrastinating doing this for 20 years!
Cliff mentioned that at the Salt Flats, a new world
record of 269 MPH was set by a C6. Chuck was
ribbed about his new Grand Sport. Gerry talked
about the cruise that he and Brenda took. They
met some folks from Lake Havasu that had a
track that we could use if we ever wanted to do a
run over there. He suggested we combine it with
the annual car show in Laughlin. Gale asked eve-
ryone to pick up their badges for the Blast before
they left the meeting. Bruce said his Corvette
was ready to go back on the road once he had it
smog checked.
Clay handed out two Regional Champions patches
to everyone there.
October 4, 2018 VTV Meeting Minutes By Chuck Robertson/Beverly Erickson
Around the Table
Those who weren’t should contact Clay to get
them.
Holly asked about times to show up on Friday and
Saturday to help with the Blast. Larry made an-
other reminder about getting nominations in for
club officers.
The 50/50 drawing: The 50/50 drawing went to
Gerry.
Name Tag drawing: Hector wasn’t present for
the name tag drawing, so $5 will be added to the
pot for the next meeting
Door prize drawing: Holly won the Door Prize
drawing.
The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting is
scheduled for November 1st starting at 6:30 pm
at CJ’s in Arroyo Grande.
Jim Carson Wins 1st Place, Again!
VTV member, Jim Carson attended the 2nd Annual
Muscle, Mutts & Meows Car Show at the Santa
Maria Elks Lodge on October 6th where he placed
first in his class with his 65 Silver Convertible.
The car show is devoted to car enthusiasts & ani-
mal lovers. All proceeds benefit the Santa Maria
Valley Humane Society.
"Along with all the muscle cars, you also see a lot
of puppies walking around. According to the Santa
Maria Times, the Muscles, Mutts and Meows car
show is the brainchild of Shannon Awtrey-
Reynolds and fellow car enthusiasts from Mercury
Stray Cats and Golden State Mopars clubs, who
wanted to put together an event to raise money
for the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society.
A great cause and a beautiful day. Congratula-
tions, Jim!

Tech Corner - Zora...the Man Behind the Mid-Engine Corvette Name
Rendering of the Mid-Engine Corvette
The new mid-engine C8 “Zora” is rumored to be
revealed at the North American International Auto
Show, held in Detroit this upcoming January.
The man behind the name know as the father of
the Corvette, is Zora Arkus-Duntov who was in-
ducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1991.
Zora Arkus-Duntov was a brilliant engineer who
transformed the Corvette from a stylish sports-car
into a legendary high-performance machine.
Arkus-Duntov was born in 1909 and raised in
Saint Petersburg, Russia. After the Russian Revo-
lution, the family immigrated to Berlin, Germany
where Arkus-Duntov earned an engineering de-
gree from Charlottenburg Technical University. He
published numerous papers about the benefits of
concepts like four-wheel drive and steering for
racing. The family would move again to Paris be-
fore the onset of WWII, and Arkus-Duntov and his
brother would join the French Air-Force. When
France surrendered, Arkus-Duntov obtained visas
for his wife and family to flee to America.
The family settled in New York City, where Arkus-Duntov
and his brother established Ardun Mechanical. The com-
pany built munitions for the war effort, and became fa-
mous for developing the Ardun cylinder head for the Flat-
head Ford V8. It was not until he attended the 1953 Mo-
torama show in New York City that Arkus-Duntov first laid
eyes on a Corvette. He thought it was the finest looking
car he had ever seen, but was disappointed to find that it
was powered by an ordinary inline-6 engine. He wrote to
General Motors President Ed Cole suggesting improve-
ments that would increase the car’s performance. Cole
was so impressed that he hired Arkus-Duntov to take on
the project.
Tech Corner - Zora...the Man Behind the Mid-Engine Corvette Name
Over the next 20 years, Arkus-Duntov would spearhead the development of the Corvette into a full-fledged sports-car.
Arkus-Duntov began to take the Corvette racing
and continually tweaked the small-block V8 in
search of more horsepower. The 1957 Corvette
showcased an innovative fuel injection system
that helped it become the first production car in
the world to produce one horsepower per cubic
inch of displacement. Arkus-Duntov also devel-
oped numerous prototype Corvettes, like the mag-
nesium-bodied Corvette Super Sport, and was in-
strumental in creating the famous Z06 perfor-
mance package and the Corvette Grand Sport. He
also become the first chief engineer of the Cor-
vette program. Though Arkus-Duntov retired in
1975, his contributions to the Corvette left a last-
ing legacy that can still be seen today, a phenom-
enon many refer to as “the mark of Zora.

Last Autocross of the Year Takes on a Record Number of Drivers.
With 55 drivers registered for the October 13th
autocross the members of VTV had a good
workout. Clay tried to get the standard 10 runs in
for the day but as time ticked by he opted for four
runs in the afternoon sanction. A few timing prob-
lems, a false red flag, cones that had not been put
back in place and many reruns caused some de-
lays but overall the team did a great job and a
well deserved long rest before the 2019 autocross
events start up again. A huge thanks to the club
members that drove in the event and worked
when they were not driving. They included: Larry
Wright, Hector Paz, Bee Jay Jones and Dave
Shultz. The other amazing members were Gerry
White, Brenda Parks and Chuck working security,
the timing team of Chuck Robertson, Bill Santmy-
er, Gale Haugen and our in kind worker, Clint Per-
ry. Clay was the lead on the event who designed
the track, set-up on Friday and yelled at timing for
not acknowledging his calls. We will do better
next time, Clay.

14th Annual “Blast” Event By Gale Haugen
On October 5-6th Vapor Trail Vettes hosted their
14th Annual Blast event at the Santa Maria Inn in
Santa Maria.
Due to a Corvette caravan to Bowling Green Ken-
tucky and another caravan of Corvettes to the
Balloon Festival in New Mexico we were down on
our attendance but that did not dampen the spir-
its of those attending or the working members.
Twenty VTV members worked very hard to insure
the event was a success. Patty’s spread of de-
lightful finger foods had participants standing in
line until she opened the doors. Nothing was go-
ing to intimidate Patty until she had everything in
place. Another great job to the one lady catering
service and to Bill for helping Patty. While Patty
was trying to keep the food organized Charlie and
Joan were serving up wine and beer in the other
hospitality room. Hector worked the Corvette
Race game that got the quests excited about win-
ning a couple of dollars and on their feet cheering
for their car numbers. Roberta was in the other
room setting up all the raffle baskets and items to
be raffled off on Saturday. Great job Roberta and
you too, Brian for helping her move all the raffles
twice. Mary Carson, thank you for establishing
the Rallye route with me driving. After Mary ex-
plained the difficulty in writing down the Gimmick
questions with me driving “like normal” I slowed
down and things did work out much better. Mary
and Roberta also scored the participants answers.
A big thanks Clay, Jeff and Dave for running the
Funkhana at the Lompoc airport and to the poker
stop attendees; Larry, Mary & Hector, Cliff & Bev-
erly, Gerry & Brenda and Charlie & Joan. It is not
easy sitting in an isolated area waiting for Cor-
vettes to pick up a poker card. You are all appre-
ciated. Cliff emceed during the car show and Cliff
& Beverly calculated the car show ballots. Thanks
you two. Chuck Robertson and Jan were every-
where helping everyone, taking pictures, manning
the Corvette pop-up, checking in guests, selling
raffle tickets and Chuck running the Rolling Thun-
der game.
The annual Blast is not a money maker like Auto-
cross Events but it is important to host a social
event like the Blast. It is the camaraderie with
other club members that is important. Our club
received a lot of very nice compliments from
guests. Two couples from Corvettes Limited Club
said this was their first time attending our event
and they would be returning with more members.
