By Ernie Gerald

My wife and I decided to be winter rainbirds (not snowbirds) in southTexas this winter. So, I am now bowling in McAllen, Texas with myRV neighbors. Most of my neighbors are Canadians that bowl Canadian5 pin bowling when home. Canadian 5 pin bowling is basically on thesame type lanes as our 10 pin bowling but shooting at 5 pins. There aremore than a million try their hand at 5 pin and over 600,000 bowl leagues.5 pin bowling is the most popular bowling in Canada and remains theonly truly Canadian sport being played in every Province and territoryof Canada. 5 pin bowling is derived from 10 pin bowling because of theobvious reason of number of pins. The 5 pin bowling balls are 5 inchesin diameter and weigh just 3 pounds 8 ounces. The pins are spaced justa hair farther apart than the bowling ball diameter in a V pattern like 10pin’s formation. The bowling ball is held much like you would acantaloupe in the palm of your hand. Complex scoring adds anotherunique feature. Each pin holds a different value and the bowler gets tothrow three times per frame. Now, this may seem easier but not true. Aperfect game score is 450 unlike 10 pin’s 300. A perfect game is veryrare, in fact it took 12 years after the games creation for the first perfectgame to be bowled. You can bowl 10 pin anywhere in the world butyou have to go to Canada to bowl 5 pin. Now, do not underestimate these Canadians, they are determined tobowl well in 10 pin or 5 pin. They tend to throw straight and hardprobably due to the lightweight small 5 pin balls they are used to. Someof them throw the ball with a backup spin due to a top of the ball fingersforward release. I noticed that the Canadians are fun to bowl with becausethey are in it for the fun, score is important but takes a back seat to fun. They did not want to establish a league but instead just a non sanctionedweekly bowling, mixing teams each week. At any rate, I really enjoybowling down here but miss my hometown bowling friends and homealleys. I look forward to bowling the PBA Experience league again thissummer at Triangle.

Bowling in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas

The Tournament of Champions TV match between Chris Barnes andMichael Haugen for the title had to be one of the best TV matches ever. When Haugen was 56 pins down, I like most everyone else had Barnesthe victor, but a rare 10 pin miss by Barnes opened the door and Haugenresponded by striking and winning 215 to 214. Best TV match I’veseen since Ernie Schlegel defeated Randy Peterson in California manyyears ago. I’m not sure but I think that was the match where the lightswent out in the center for a while and when the match was resumed ,itcame down to the tenth frame. Peterson needed a strike to win and bur-ied the ball and left a 9 pin which gave the match to Ernie. Congratulations to R.A. Long bowling team for taking first place inthe district tournament held at Allen’s Crosley Lanes in Vancouver andalso to Mark Morris for coming in second. Both teams advance to State. The Van-Port could not make any connections to get ongoing news onthe High School St.Helens League this season, and for this we apolo-gize and will try harder next season to try to bring ongoing results to ourreaders. Have already talked with a few coaches about this and hope-fully next season will see more high school bowling news in The Van-Port. If you wonder where John Solberg has been lately, John had surgeryon his eye and complications developed leading to having the surgeryredone. Last word was he is doing fine. On the subject of Van-Port staff-ers, you might have noticed the Ernie Gerald also has been among themissing. Ernie’s ok, just down on the south Texas coast enjoying thesunshine, hopefully he’ll be back around March. Ernie emailed an ar-ticle on some of his activities you’ll find on this page. A Thank You also to Janet Steinmueller, team captain of the winningteam “Rookie Roller” who captured the 36th Clark County Mixed tour-nament. Janet took it upon herself to send us a picture of the team. Wereit not for Janet we would not have known who won as no results wererecieved by The Van-Port. On the subject of associations, I’d like to send a special Thank Youto the Portland USBC, they do an excellent job of getting us news, pic-tures and advertising their tournaments. Bob Zoesch writes a monthlycolumn on Portland doings and it is very popular, when he misses amonth I always get phone calls saying “what did you (meaning me) do?Leave him out! So it can be done. Thanks to Al Whiteman, Lani, BobZoesch and other association members for their support of The Van-Port. With the sale of Hazel Dell Lanes to Dave Husted, it removes fromcenter ownership the last of what I call “the Old Guard.” Denny Labschhas been at Hazel Dell for over 40 years and he now joins the ranks ofthe retired. He was the last proprietor with links to the “old days” ofPortland bowling. Champ Husted is in semi-retirement in Arizona, DonnAllen, Sr. has been retired for several years and Bill Oetken at Kelloggis also in semi-retirement. I consider myself part of “the old guard” asare many other Portland bowlers, but I’m referring here to proprietorswho did so much for bowling and were successful! Will miss them all!And thanks to them! AND Goodbye to Sunset Lanes in Seattle, after 50+ years it has beensold to a (what else) real estate developer. Along with the loss of Sunsetwill go the popular Lelani Swiss, which moved to Sunset when Lelaniwas sold. Hope it can find a home somewhere.

The Van-Port, February, 2008-3

Well, we made it through the holidays and are well over half waythrough our winter bowling season. Bring on the warm sunny stuff. Idid it again. Last year I missed the Vanport deadline for the Januaryissue and pledged not to do so again...But I did. As such, I missedJanuary again and when the paper came out several people mentionednot seeing an article from me. (Well maybe a couple of people - Thanksson, for noticing). So, on to the current month’s news and happenings. GPUSBC membership stands at 10,290 as of the middle of January. That’s a reduction of a little less than 4 percent from last year which issomewhat less than the previous year-to-year membership declines.Awards requests continue to come in with 6,128 thus far which includes113 perfect games, 37 800 series and 108 11-in-a row scores. Accuracyalso shows up with nine big 4 (4,6,7,10) conversions and seven 7-10conversions. The time for tournaments is rapidly coming up on us. Entries areclosed for the GPUSBC Youth Championship tournament being held atInterstate Lanes the first three weekends of February and everyone isencouraged to drop by the center and show support for our youngbowlers. C’mon folks, grand-parents, friends and acquaintances, let’sshow them we care. It’s not too early to get your entry in for the GPUSBC women’stournament which is scheduled for Rose Bowl on 2 weekends in March(8-9 and 15-16). Entry blanks can be found at everycenter, on the web-site or by calling the office. Spectators are alsoencouraged to mark your calendars for this event. Other items on the agenda to be referenced in greater detail in comingmonths is the GPUSBC Open Championship in April at Cascade Lanes.Entries are available in all centers. Also, the Annual Awards banquet will be heldin June at the Hi-Hat Restaurant in Tigard. Applications are being solicited for nomination to the GPUSBC Hallof Fame. There are a lot of great bowlers out there who are worthy ofthis honor and deserve to be nominated. How about it? Applicationblanks are available in many centers or can be obtained by calling theoffice. Deadline for submission is March 1. Not to be forgotten isapplications for scholarship grants for our junior bowlers. Many of ouryouth bowlers will be attending college in future years and certainlycan benefit by having scholarship dollars available to them. Applicationsare also in centers or available from the office. Deadline is March 15th. And speaking of applications and needs, the board of the GPUSBC isseeking applicants for board positions in the coming elections. If youwant to have a voice in the local bowling scene, consider joining theboard. In addition to regular positions, the Youth Committee also isseeking applicants. Here is a chance to get involved with the youth sideof the board’s activities. Carrying that one more step, there is alwaysroom for volunteers to step up and assist in many ways. Decision is pending purchase of buildings, land, BPAA board approval GREENDALE, Wis. - The United States Bowling Congress Board of Directors has given approval to start negotiations with all partiesinvolved torelocate the organization’s headquarters to Arlington, Texas. The decision, made Sunday during the Board’s meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C., is contingent on negotiations for buildings and land nearthe Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America complex along with any incentives offered by the City of Arlington and State of Texas. The BPAA Board of Directors also must approve the plan which it is scheduled to do at a meeting Wednesday during the BPAA Mid-WinterMeetings in Myrtle Beach. “After carefully considering the facts, including taking into account the long history of USBC and its predecessors in the Milwaukee area, theBoard came to the conclusion that it was in USBC’s best business interests to join with BPAA in Arlington creating an internationalbowling campus,” said USBC President Jeff Boje.

USBC Headquarters will move to Arlington unless there is a breakdown in the negotiations relating to the property. If all details can beworked out. USBC is expected to move its headquarters operations within a year. In addition to office space for approximately 235 overallemployees, the new complex would include a combined equipment testing and international training center. “The property we are looking at is in a very high profile area that we believe will help enhance the visibility of the sport of bowling,” Bojeadded. “In addition to being close to Six Flags, the Texas Rangers baseball stadium and new Dallas Cowboys football stadium are close by.There also are a number of other entertainment venues in the vicinity.

“With USBC and BPAA under the same roof, there’s an untold number of ways we can work together to help grow the sport,” Boje said.“There already are a number of joint programs that we work together on and this proposal would allow us to do so even more.”

USBC and BPAA announced in November their boards of directors had approved study of how much their operations should be integrated. The goal was to use such efficiencies to help grow the sport of bowling.

USBC board votes to pursue moving headquarters to Texas

BPAA Co-EndorsesIntegration withUSBC Arlington, TEXAS - TheBoard of Directors of theBowling Proprietors’ Associationof America (BPAA), at its Boardmeeting on January 24, 2008 atthe Bowling Summit, unanimously endorsed theproposal for purchase of abuilding and land in Arlington,Texas for an integration offacilitieswith the UnitedStates Bowling Congress (USBC). USBC’s Board of Directors hadmet days earlier at the Summitand voted to pursue thesenegotiations. The building andland is adjacent to BPAA’scurrent offices which wouldbecome a part of the proposedIn!ernational Bowling Campus.BPAA President Joe Schumackercommented, “The timing andcommon location of the USBCBoard and the BPAA Boardallowed for unprecedentedcoordination of efforts to improvethe ability of the organizations towork together. Sharing facilitieswith USBC should allow forincreased communication andeconomies of scale that willbenefit the entire bowlingindustry.” Schumacker furtherstated,The Bowling ProprietorsAssociation started in 1932 andheadquartered in the Dallas suburbof Arlington, Texas, BPAA is a tradeorganization that represents thebusiness interests of more than3,400 bowling center ownersworldwide.

coach’s corner

Make a New Year Resolution We are still talking about excessive force, as we did last month.Last month the subject was the use of excessive force to gainvelocity and how the use of legs and increased tempo will treeup that forced arm swing. Here comes revolution. I won’t go into revolution in depthbecause of so many great articles in the many publications. They are accurate and all done by people and manufacturersthat have put tremendous amounts of time into researchingand studying ball dynamics and how those dynamics actuallydevelop on the lane surface with the many differing dressingpatterns, velocity, lane surfaces, ball core dynamics, axis andaxis tilt, ball coverings, and the many different revolutionvariables. All I want to help with here is the excessive use of force andhow it can cause trouble with your consistency. Consistency isor should be your main goal. Consistency in everything from thestance, placing your fingers and thumb into the ball, how youhold it, starting of the ball into the swing, entire approachincluding your direction of footwork to tempo, the finish position, the release and rotation. and extension in the followthrough, andthe actual force you use to get into the finish position and theforce you apply to the ball as you release and finish it. If any ofthese differ from shot to shot, then there will more than likely bea difference in speed or direction of rotation and in velocity. It’svery difficult to be consistent with excessive force of any kind. When you start to fatigue, can you repeat the shots the same aswhen you started’? There is a special spot in all of this that I call “a series of freeflowing athletic motions and natural way of delivering the ballout onto the lane surface”. Heavy emphasis should be placedupon free flowing and natural. These terms suggest not to placetoo much application of force upon anything in the entireapproach and delivery process. The smoother everythingbecomes, the more natural the delivery gets, the more consistentall aspects of performance become. While doing so, we have toremember that we also need to be aggressive and not fall overthe line into sloppiness. This is why I consider bowling to be asport demanding one of the highest levels of “controlledaggressiveness”. So many league bowlers have theaggressiveness but fail in the control portion, and others havethe natural free flowing approach but fail to impart the neededamount of aggressiveness when needed. In this department, everyone is different and the requirement of matching free flowingand natural with aggressiveness will be different for eachindividual, depending upon their style and successful level ofintensity. Let’s say you roll the ball with a lot of rotation andspeed. Do you find yourself feeling like you are out of balanceduring or after the shot’? Even if a coach cannot see it. Do youfeel slightly different after each shot`? Then you may be applyingtoo much revolution and/or ball velocity for the finish positionyou are attaining. Let up on both velocity and revolution andmove your target line accordingly. You just may find that youcan now maintain your finish position which will allow you torepeat your shot making in a more consistent manner, resultingin more consistency and control at the break point. Believe me,4,000 revolutions and 30 mph are not needed during leagueplay on a standard league dressing pattern. A real good exampleis to watch the professionals. You just don’t see any of thesuccessful bowlers out of control at the line. Even if they usemore force that most league bowlers. They have learned overmany years of experience to use it in a controlled manner thatallows them to be extremely consistent in their approach anddelivery. And they do so with very little visible effort. So for league, keep in mind two things. The lane isn’t 200yards long. It’s only 60 feet from the foul line to the head pin.And the lane isn’t 10 yards wide either. The ball doesn’t have tohook 15 feet from the edge in order to get to the head pin. Fromthe 7 board to the 17 board is only ten boards! That’s all thehook you need! More is nice of course when you have to moveinside and play outside. A good arsenal of equipment willaccomplish most of this for most bowlers.Earl Anthony once said something that has always stuck in mymind. “Always cross as few boards as possible”.

Ask yourself this question. Can 1 use force in a consistentenough manner that my ball is always the same on the lane’?Same width and distance of break point’? Same speed’? CanI hit my target with most shots’? If you have a “no” in here orseveral of there, then work on your delivery, smoothing it out, removing some force, until you can. One bowler may be ableto attain consistency with revolution and speed at 18 mph, butthe next bowler may be at 14 mph and less revs. If they areconsistent, they just may be rolling competitive scores at eachother.Until next month, have fun bowling!

Tiny Davenport Lanes just outside of Spokane made abig name for itself on Jan. 26-27 when it won the LeilaniSwiss at Sunset Bowl. Trouble with it is only one of itsplayers is from Davenport Lanes that being proprietor JohnLough. The rest of the team consisted of Chet Rogersfrom Portland, Jeff Conradi of Centralia, Bob Davidson ofSeattle, and Jason Williams from Vashon Island. This very talented team took home the first place prize of$3000. The first day saw Team Tribbey or Wrong Number Pervatop the leader board. In addition to Kathy Tribbey thisteam consisted of Dan Orazio, Mike Danielson, Chris

Springfels, and DavidGrooms. First dayhighlights included a 300game by Andy Solberg ofWilsonville Lanes in thesecond game. The Leilani Swiss wasoriginally 6 games on thefirst day and 6 games onSunday but with bowlerscoming from as far awayas Portland and Spokanethey changed to a 7 game

first day and 5 game second day format. This leads to avery long day on Saturday with the lane conditions burningup and bowlers having to make numerous adjustments. OnSunday, the Davenport teamtook the lead right out of thegate and never looked back.Chet Rogers averaged anunbelievable 254 for the fivegames on Sunday, taking thesingles. Teammate Bob Davidsonannexed the singles onSaturday, rolling 1210 for 5games. Another highlightSunday was a 300 game forCurtis Messer Jr. Also onSunday, Body By Bowling, ateam captained by Wayne Rossmade an incredible run fromway down in the standings tofinish second. This teamconsisted of brothers Wadeand Jodey Rees, Erik Hohlbeinand Dave Johnson. At onepoint on Saturday this teamwas in last place and playingthe dummy team. Theyreceived $2000 for theirfantastic finish. So no one seems toremember what edition of theLeilani Swiss this one was, butthe tournament was started byMac Lowry in the early 70’s.Longtime manager of Leilani,Jerry Hahn was on hand topresent trophies to the winnersat Sunset and Jean Waldal whohas been very instrumental inthe success of the tournamentworked her usual magic on theSwiss. What’s going to happen tothe Swiss when Sunset closesdown? Nobody knows, but thebowlers all seem to want it tocontinue. Maybe this greatevent can find a really goodtournament house next year tokeep it going.

10-The Van-Port, February, 2008

To quote an old saying, “All good things must come to an end”, a good thingfor bowling is ending in Seattle’s Ballard district. Sunset Bowl, opened in 1956has been sold to Avalon Ballard LLC for $13.2 million and will close in April,2008. The center is located at 1420 NW Market St. Sunset Bowl has been the hub of life for many Ballard residents. The restau-rant at Sunset served delicious home style food and was always filled with “regu-lars.” It is one of the last remaining places where you could order hot cashews inthe bar for $1.25. Sunset is also one of the few remaining northwest bowlingcenters that operates 24 hours a day. Two years ago, another center operated by the owners of Sunset, Lelani Laneswas sold to a developer for $6.2 million and at that time many speculated it wasonly a matter of time until Sunset also was sold. Located in the heart of Ballard, and with real estate prices surging, especially for prime locations most knew asale was coming. Sunset Bowl opened January 9, 1957 and was one of the first centers in theNorthwest to have automatic pinsetters. With it’s 24 hours a day operation Sun-set Bowl had the highest usage per lane bed in the nation for two consecutiveyears and has hosted a PBA regional tournament for the past 14 years. It under-went a remodel in the summer of 2005. But as manager Verl Lowry, who hasworked at Sunset for 32 years said, “The land is exceeding the value of thebusiness, I guess.” What will replace Sunset has not yet been announced, but the purchasers, AvalonBay owns apartment communities in the Puget Sound area, so a good guesswould be an apartment complex of some kind. Sunset had over 50 employees, with over 25% of them having been with thecenter for over 20 years. One of them is Jack Workman who has washed dishesat Sunset for 42 years. He has also filled in as a cook, bartender and waiters.Workman remembers when coffee was a nickel, a 10-ounce beer 35 cents. As one who has spent considerable time at Sunset covering tournaments andjust visiting, I was always impressed with how the center had maintained thatgood old time bowling center atmosphere while still keeping up with all themodern technology. It was always a friendly customer oriented place to go, atribute to management and staff. According to Washington State Bowling Proprietors Association statistics, inthe 1960s, there were 32 bowling centers within the Seattle city limits. With theclosure of Sunset only five will remain, West Seattle Bowl, AMF Imperial Lanes,Skyway Park Bowl & Casino, Roxbury and Magic Lanes. And with the closure bowling will also lose more league bowlers, as alwayshappens when a center closes.

“Just Ask Vahn”By: Vahn Stone, Frame-Maker

and sonsDeck Chutes Are Not All

Created Equal

Deck chutes may look the samein shape, but the materials they aremade of tell the true story. Rubber chutes; usually a lightbrown or a dark textured brown area good bucket early on, but as theyage, the material can start grippingthe pins. They hold on to the pinsso the deck does not set up all tenpins, or a pin may ride back up withthe deck causing a deck jam. Insome cases you can manicure thebuckets to make the pins passthrough better. NEVER clean these types ofbuckets with a solvent basedcleaner! It will dry the buckets outeven faster and start to grip the pinssooner than normal. Use a mildsoap, or an Armorall type car dashcleaner instead. Do not spray thebuckets directly; use the product byfirst spraying it on a towel and thenwiping down the bucket. This waythe cleaners won’t get all over thepin decks causing out-of-range pins. The hard gray poly buckets arevery noisy when the pins drop in.Also, the 5-pin deck chute willdevelop a dished spot in the apronpart of the chute, not letting the pinfall into the deck. This can cause amajor deck jam proving that cheaperis not always better! Since we are in the field andfrequently test all the products, ourpick for the best chute is the BigMouth Smooth Chute from Vantageparts. They have been on themarket for several years and provento be a superior product. It is veryslick to the touch and flexible bynature, making it impossible for pinsto stick and there is no need formanicuring. Again to clean themuse only a mild soap and watersolution or the Armorall type cleanersprayed on a towel to wipe them out. If you have any questions on thisproduct, or any other productsplease feel free to call me at 503-816-3980. Here’s how it works: A bowler never rolls 2 consecutive shots. The bowler going 1st rolls the 1st shot, if they get a strike thepartner then rolls the 1st ball the next frame, if the bowler leavesany pins standing, their partner would shoot at the spare.

Q. Help! The guy’s I bowl league with are always telling me I amstanding on 30 and aiming at 13. This is Greek to me what are theytalking about? A. They are talking about the boards they are usingon the lane to play certain shots. Let me explain. The arrows on the laneare put on boards on the lane. The arrows are placed five boards apart. The first arrow is the five board it is placed five boards from the gutter. The second arrow is the ten board; the 3rd arrow is the fifteen board. The4th arrow or center arrow is the 20 board. Counting from the right thenthe next arrow is the 5th and is the 25th board. Next is the 30. So standingon the 30 is lining your foot up on the board two arrows to the left of thecenter arrow. Then shooting the 13 board would be trying to hit the spot3 boards to the left of the 2nd arrow. That is the thirteenth board. Right-handers count from the right hand gutter to the left starting at one. Left-handers count starting at the left hand gutter and go right. Boards one toforty.

Q. I started bowling about 5 years ago; I am an 180+ average but stillstruggle with thumb fit. I feel at the start of league bowling the thumb is alittle loose and I have a tendency to grab, as the thumb swells it feelsbetter. But I am not comfortable with having a tight thumb as somesuggest. Any thoughts other then using tape? A. The answerhere is to tape or use something to help adjust your grip. I also am not afan of taping the ball as such. I have found a great product that reallyhelps me with my thumb problems. It is called Magic Carpet it goes in theback of the thumbhole just as tape does. But the yarn of the carpet keepsfrom building up suction. So you can keep the hole fairly tight but still getout without squeezing. One of these takes the place of 3 pieces of whitetape so you don’t have to layer it. You can also place it in the hole twodifferent ways. One way with the yarn down for a slower release and theother way with the yarn going up for a quicker release. It is not a productthat is widely available in pro shops. It is a grass roots product. I am adistributor so if you would like to try it sendme a self-addressed, self-stamped 2 stamps please #10 envelope with $20.00. I will send you 10Magic Carpets. These last a long time. I will also send you instrructionsfor their use. Bob Korth, 750 Hemlock Ave. Central Point, Or 97502. Oremail me if you have any more questions about [email protected].

Q. I needed a ball that would go longer. I went to the pro shop andasked about getting a weaker entry-level ball. The pro shop told me Iwould not be happy with a cheap ball. They suggested a more expensiveball then tweak the drilling and the cover to get more length. What is youropinion? A. I don’t want to make any pro shop operators mad but inmost cases the shop will make more money on a more expensive ball. They are in the business of making money. I used to be in the pro shopbusiness and my first concern is to help the customer. Your pro shopmay have had some bad experiences with entry-level balls. I never did ifone of my customers wanted a certain ball I sold them that ball anddrilled it to the best of my ability. What your pro shop suggested will workand may give you a little more hitting power than an entry level ball but Ihave had good luck myself with entry level balls as a part of my arsenal. They are generally weaker but still a very good piece of equipment tohave for some shots. Sometimes weaker can be better. If they won’t sellyou the ball you want go to another shop. I am sure someone will helpyou. A sale is a sale. To ask a question write [email protected].

It was nice to see Bill Starnes back bowling after some pretty severemedical problems. We got tired of seeing Bill real soon as he proceeded tokick our tails. Bill led all qualifiers shooting 1840 an average of 230 on ademanding shot. Larry Lindberg finished just behind Bill with 1810. DaleWhittington was 3r. then Doug Nowlin in 4th and last in the top 5 wasRandy Cochran. Randy was dominating in the finals he beat Doug 255 to201. Then in the closest match beat Dale 257 to 246. Randy beat Larry236 to 219 and in the final match won the championship 256 to 195.Congratulations Randy. Another notable job of bowling was accomplishedby Pattie Cochran as she cashed in our tournament for the first time. lthink she was more excited by that than husband Randy winning. Thecashers:
