Under Pressure: A Printmaking Exhibit For the months of July and August, the UUCWI gallery will feature the printmaking works of local artists Tammi Sloan and Mary Horton. Tammi Sloan is a self-taught metalsmith, enamelist and mixed media artist, born into a long line of artists. She has studied paint- ing and mixed media art over many years and enjoys incorporating what she's learned into her block printing and gelliplate prints to create eclectic mixed media prints. "The work that I am presenting was inspired by my love of nature. The colors and the subject matter reflect the subtle tones of the earth. Mixing black, blue, orange and white, I have created a cohesive body of work that blends nicely together. The images of poppies and gingko leaves were cre- ated using handmade paper stencils. They were combined with commercial stencils to create interesting background textures. I utilized a gelliplate, as opposed to a traditional printing press. It is a low-tech form of printing that provides a more spontaneous printing experience that is highly textural, which speaks to my love of textiles." Born and raised in the Pacific North- west, Mary Horton is a printmaker and mixed media assemblage artist creating one-of-a-kind monotypes, collagraphs and etchings. "My print work explores the abstract views of my surroundings. I utilize a combination of printing techniques including exten- sive use of collograph plates, which have been cut to shape and built up with layers of shellac that are incised, burned, and sanded, then printed in the intaglio method. My compositions are bound together by a powerful sense of color and natural rhythm. I utilize a personal visual vocabulary com- prised of organic and geometric forms. My goal is to create images with the movement, liveliness, and depth of nature. When I work with my dolls and other assemblage pieces, I am reminded that we live in a disposal society. I find beauty in things that others see as junk or worthless. All materials used to create my pieces are found, repurposed, and recycled items."
