Rationale

• Almost every public school in NSW has been transitioned to authenticated Internet access and email

• Almost every teacher and student now has their own DET provided email account

• Many teachers are unaware of the basic features of email

• Many teachers are unaware of simple and effective ways to use email as a teaching and learning resource.


The Workshop

• Addresses Professional Knowledge domain of the Professional Teaching Standards

• Element 1.2.4: Apply current knowledge and skills in the use of ICT in the classroom to meet syllabus outcomes in:– Basic operational skills in using email– Pedagogical skills for classroom management

• Is registered with the NSW Institute of Teachers

• May contribute to professional learning requirements of New Scheme teachers.


Workshop OutcomesBy the end of the workshop, participants will:• Have accessed and used My email• be familiar with a number of email features including:

– attaching documents– creating distribution lists– creating a signature– strategies for managing email– other email options.

• have engaged in an email activity that can be applied to the classroom.

• have explored the CLI and/or TaLe sites and identified and evaluated some resources that can be applied to their classroom.

Students can access their My email client through the Student Portals:

• Kindergarten to Year 6 through Kidspace

• Year 7 to Year 12 through the Student Portal

Email features

• The email product provided is web-based and accessed through the DET Portal

• An individual email is limited to a maximum size of 4MB, including attachments

• All email messages are filtered for inappropriate content

• All email is scanned for viruses• Executable files cannot be attached to an

email

The Mail box:• 500 Mb for teachers• 35 Mb for students• student email can be limited if necessary• web mail cannot be electronically archived• Inbox, Sent items and Deleted items will

need to be cleaned out regularly.• Schools’ Support Documentation Accessed

through the Link on My Portal.

Evaluation Activity

• From the task, email your workshop facilitator (Use the GAL), the questions and answers you have developed as an attachment.

• The email must also include a signature text, a read-receipt and carbon copied (CC) to a colleague.
