Question:• What is in Article

1 (Chapter 1) of the Constitution that is important?

Answer:• Article one describes the Legislative

Branch (the US Congress = The House of Representatives and the Senate).

• The most important part for us is the Elastic Clause which gives Congress the power to make laws that it thinks are “necessary and proper” (almost any law).

• This has allowed the powers of the national government to grow over time upsetting the conservatives!Because of the Elastic Clause,

the new government grew in power each year making conservatives more and more unhappy!




Answer:

• Article 2 describes the Executive Branch (Headed by the President)

• Broad and vague – which means it is not clear what the president can and cannot do.

• This has allowed the president’s powers to grow over time.

• Each time a president has done something and nobody stopped him, his powers grew!

Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase was unconstitutional but nobody stopped it = power grows!

relationships between the states.

• Remember that was a big problem under the Articles of Confederation government.

• US government had the power to control it now!

Article four made sure the states stayed together (at least for now)




Answer:• Article 5 describes the amendment

process.• 2/3’s of both houses (or special

convention) must vote to propose (suggest) an amendment.

• ¾’s of the state legislatures (or state conventions) must vote to ratify (accept) an amendment.

• Important because it has allowed the government to make official and permanent changes to the government so it can adjust with time.The 13th Amendment ended slavery!

6) of the Constitution that is important?

Answer:• Article 6 says that the Federal

(national) government is supreme (stronger than the states).

• Known as the “Supremacy Clause”

• Important to keep the states united (for now) and because any argument between state power and national power is solved by this!

• National government power grows!

In Gibbons v Ogden, the Supreme Court (using Judicial Review) ruled in favor of the Federal Government’s power to control interstate commerce because of the Supremacy Clause!

Why did Article 6 create problems between conservatives and liberals?
