Message from the Dean

I warmly welcome you to the Faculty of Dentistry. Yourentry into this Faculty will provide you with an excitingundergraduate program and the prospect of achallengingand rewarding career. Your course requiresthe development of procedural skills to achieveappropriatestandardsinpreclinical subjects and clinicalpractice. Coursework in the clinical sciences is built ona foundation of basic and biological sciences and youwill commence your practical clinical experience in thefirst year. Your final year is designed to match as closelyas possible, a comprehensive practice experience withminimal clinical supervision. As well, in the final year,clinical experience will be broadened to further equipyoufor practiceby rotations to other hospitals associatedwith the University of Sydney.

Your undergraduate program takes place on threelocations: your basic and biological sciences trainingis on campus at the University of Sydney; yourpreclinical training takes place at the United DentalHospital of Sydney, one of our teaching hospitals; andyour clinical trainingis split between our two teachinghospitals, the United Dental Hospital of Sydney, andWestmead Hospital Dental Clinical School. Your firsttwo years on campus will allow your early clinical andpreclinical experience to take place at the UnitedDental Hospital, and the senior clinical years (fourthand fifth years) will be completed at WestmeadHospital Dental Clinical School.

Dentistry is a noble profession, closely linked withmedicine but independent from it and yourundergraduate course is designed to prepare you tocommence clinical practice following graduation andregistration. Your entry into dentistry and yourtraining as a health careprofessional place a great dealof responsibility on you for the delivery of appropriateclinical treatment and for the care and management of

your patients' well-being. They will have trust in yourtechnical and clinical skills and your ethical and moralstandards, and the responsibility that rests with youin each of these areas requires special understanding,caring and sensitivity.

Your course will cover technical, clinical and ethicalaspects of dental practice and your competency ineach of these areas will allow you to confidentlymaintain appropriate standards of health care. As agraduate of the University of Sydney you will have aprivileged role in the community.

Your course is designed to equip you to meetchanging community needs. Such changes have had aprofound impact during the last 20 years, independentof the refinements of dental instrumentation andergonomic clinic design, and reflect much more thebiological basis of dentistry and a move from atechnology-based discipline that was previously thebackbone of dental practice. As well, the improvementsin community oral health have followed increasedawareness of preventive oral health measures. Theemphasis on preventive care in practice and thefluoridation of reticulated water supplies has led tothe virtual elimination of dental caries. Managementof carious lesions in such mouths when they do occur,is a relatively simple procedure and medicalmanagement of the early carious lesion both for adultsand children has dramatically changed the work loadof clinical practice. The emphasis on preventive dentalcare, on management of the occlusion of the teeth anddealing with orofacial dysfunction and jaw musclepain, is now an increasingly important component ofdental practice. The use of new restorative materialsand the exciting development of predictable implantmanagement have further developed dentistry toequip itself well for the demands of the 21st century.

The exciting developments in undergraduateeducation are matched by challenging continuingeducation opportunities. There is a need to continueto keep abreast of changes that arise as a result ofimproved oral health care and research into dentaldiseases. The Faculty offers a comprehensive varietyof continuing education courses, diploma coursesand higher degree training in research and the clinicalspecialities. I recommend these to you as the ideal wayto maintain clinical and ethical standards and to keeppace with the changing face of dentistry.

At the United Dental Hospital and WestmeadHospitalDentistry students spend some of their time in Firstand Second Years and most of Third Year at theUnited Dental Hospital, 2 Chalmers Street, Surry Hills,2010; for the major part of Fourth and all of Fifth Year,students are located at the Dental Clinical School,Westmead Hospital. You should seek informationand advice from the following Faculty areas:

Interdisciplinarycoursework is also provided in Dental Technologyand Oral Health; Oral Diagnosis and Radiology; andthe Clinical Dentistry course in Fifth Year.

Degrees and diplomas in the FacultyTheFacultyof Dentistryprovideseducationalprogramsat both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.These courses prepare the students for the generalpractice of dentistry, specialisation, research, teaching

• or dental administration. There are two undergraduatedegrees, the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery(BDS) and the degree of Bachelor of Science (Dental)(BSc(Dent)). There are three master's degrees, the degreeof Master of Dental Surgery (MDS), the degree ofMaster of Science inDentistry (MScDent) and the degreeof Master of Dental Science (MDSc). The Faculty alsooffers the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) andDoctor of Dental Science (DDSc), the Graduate Diplomain Public Health Dentistry (DPHDent) and the GraduateDiploma in Clinical Dentistry (DipClinDent).

The degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery enablesgraduates to practise dentistry and is the academicevidence required by the Dental Board of N.S.W. forregistration as a dentist.

The degree of Bachelor of Science (Dental) is aresearch degree undertaken during or after thecompletion of the BDS degree.

The field of dentistryThe goal of the dental profession is the optimal oralhealth of the individual and the community, by theprevention of oral disease and the treatment of thosediseases and abnormalities that cannot be prevented.The dental profession is an integral part of the healthteam in the community and has the specificresponsibility for orofacial tissues and their functionand a joint responsibility with the other healthprofessions to integrate dental and oral health into thetotal health care of the community.

This responsibility involves consideration of boththe patient as an individual and as a member of thecommunity. In the modern dental curriculum,community dentistry is playing an ever increasing role.

Dentistry as a professionThere is an increasing scope of activity for dentalgraduates. The control of dental caries and thelessening of needs for routine restorative dentistry inthe younger generation, as well as rapid advances inresearch and prevention over the last decade, haveallowed dental graduates the opportunity to carry outmore sophisticated and specialised dental treatment.The increasing availability of postgraduate trainingmakes the entry into specialised practice more readilyavailable and the growing level of communityawareness of the significance of oral health, togetherwith a feeling of confidence in preventive measures,allows a higher standard of dental health care to beprovided for the community.

The emphasis on community health aspects andthe development of the social responsibility of theprofession are also influencing the nature of dentalpractice and re-orienting attitudes of both theprofession and the community to oral health and thevalue of preventive and treatment services.

General dental practiceRegistered dental graduates may practise as generalpractitioners and provide dental care for their patientsin a private practice situation. They may also practisegeneral dentistry in an institution, governmentinstrumentality or in the armed services. Most dentistsare in general practice.

SpecialisationDentists may undertake programs of advanced studyand research to prepare themselves for specialisedpractice. Some of the areas of specialisation areorthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oralmedicine, periodontics, dental public health,prosthodontics and paediatric dentistry.

Dental graduates may restrict their practices to oneof the areas of specialisation or may, after taking ahigher degree or additional qualification, emphasiseand develop an area of specialised interest withingeneral practice.

ResearchThe essence of professional and university activity isthe development of knowledge in the total field thatthe profession encompasses.

Research in dentistry is the basis of progress, notonly in understanding human biology and pathology,but also psychology. It embraces every aspect of thebasic sciences, clinical practice and the behaviouralsciences in their relationship to the production of oralhealth and its maintenance.

There are increasing opportunities for research inoral health science. Generally graduates will have toundertake higher degree programs to fit them for acareer in both research and teaching.

TeachingWith the expansion and development of dental schoolsand the increasing numbers of students, the tendencyis to rely on full-time specially trained staff membersin teaching, rather than upon part-time teachersrecruited from the ranks of the profession.

The teaching of dentistry provides a most interestingcareer, for it necessitates a combination of the academicand practical aspects of dentistry approached on thehighest possible level.

Institutional dentistryEvery hospital or clinic providing a dental healthservice must employ a number of graduate dentists.Many find that working within the structure of suchan organisation is both interesting and rewarding andthe new graduate, in particular, may welcome theopportunity of further experience in hospital work.

Armed servicesIn time of peace, as well as in war, the Navy, Army andAir Force each maintain a dental health service. Thedentist commences with a commissioned rank.

School Dental ServiceFor those interested indental work limited to treatmentfor children, the School Dental Service offers manyopportunities. With the extension of public healthprograms, this service has been significantly expanded.

The Dentists ActThe practice of dentistry in N.S.W. is governed by theDentists Act 1989, and by the regulations madepursuant to it. Copies of the Act and regulations maybe obtained from the Office of the Government Printer,Sydney. The administration of the Act is vested in theDental Board of N.S.W.

It is illegal to perform any operation or give anytreatment, advice or attendance such as is usuallyperformed or given by dentists unless registered bythe Dental Board of N.S.W.

Any person who proves to the Board to be of goodcharacter shall be entitled to be registered as a dentistif he or she is:(a) a graduate in dentistry of any university in

Australia or of a dental college affiliated with auniversity of Australia; or

(b) qualified in any of the ways set out in Section 10of the Act.

Students undertake their training at both the UnitedDental Hospital and Westmead Hospital DentalClinical School.

United Dental Hospital of SydneyThe United Dental Hospital provides:(a) clinical and technical facilities for the instruction

of dentistry students;(b) dental treatment for patients who are holders

of Health Cards or those referred for specialistcare;

(c) facilities for the Institute of Dental Research.

Dental Clinical School, Westmead HospitalThe Dental Clinical School is part of WestmeadHospital. It provides:(a) clinical and technical facilities for the instruction

of dentistry students;(b) dental treatment for patients who are holders

of Health Cards or those referred for specialistcare.

Aboriginal Medical ServiceThe Aboriginal Medical Service is an out-patient healthcare unit for Aboriginal patients from all over Australiawho, for a variety of reasons, do not make use ofconventional health services. The Service has beenaffiliated as a teaching institute of the University of

Sydney. It has a dental clinic that offers studentstraining in preventive dentistry in particular. It alsoprovides excellent opportunities to conduct follow-up treatment and clinical practice in a communitysetting and to gain clinical experience of the dentalproblems of a major ethnic group.

Institute of Dental ResearchThe Institute of Dental Research, which occupies mostof the seventh floor of the United Dental Hospitalperforms a wide variety of functions. The Institutegrew out of what was previously the Department ofPathology of the hospital. As the name of the Instituteimplies, its staff is primarily concerned with dentalresearch and comprises graduates in both dentistryand science. There are permanent positions forgraduates as well as a number of positions held bypostgraduate students on research grants. The Instituteis concerned with biological research rather thanproblems of dental materials and the topics ofinvestigation come within the fields of chemistry,biochemistry, physiology, bacteriology, immunologyand pathology. There is a close liaison with the dentalprofession and certain tests are carried out on request.Finance is provided by the Health Department ofNew South Wales, but members of staff lecture part-time at the University and participate in postgraduatedental programs. The Director holds the position ofProfessor of Oral Biology.

Centre for Oral Health ResearchThe Centre for Oral Health Research brings togethera range of relevant research interests within the Facultyand the Institute of Dental Research, which is nowdesignated the Department of Oral Biology.

The aim of the Centre is to provide the interfacebetween scientific developments and clinical practicethrough studies in a range of relevant areas.

The Centre also serves as a public focus for theactivities of the Faculty and the Institute of DentalResearch. The components of the Centre are theInstitute of Dental Research and the following Facultyunits: Biomaterials, Experimental Oral Surgery,Neurobiology and Orofacial Pain, Oral Pathologyand Oral Medicine, and Orofacial Implants.

Resolutions of the Senate

Constitution of the Faculty of Dentistry1. The Faculty of Dentistry shall comprise thefollowing persons:

(a) the Professors, Readers, AssociateProfessors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturersand Associate Lecturers being full-timepermanent, fractional permanent, full-time temporary, or fractional temporarymembers of the teaching staff in theSchool of Dental Science;

(b) the Deans of the Faculties of Medicineand Science;

(c) the Heads of the Schools of Biological

Sciences, Chemistry and Physics or theirnominees;

(d) the Heads of the Departments ofAnatomy and Histology, Biochemistry,Infectious Diseases, Pathology,Pharmacology and Physiology or theirnominees and up to two full-timemembers of the academic staff of each ofthose departments who are responsiblefor teaching dental students, nominatedbienniallyby theHead of the Department;

(e) the Boden Professor of Human Nutrition;(0 not more than eight part-time members

of the teaching staff in the School ofDental Science elected by the Faculty,with not more than two members beingelected from any one discipline;

(g) persons upon whom the Senate hasconferred the title of Clinical Professor,Clinical Associate Professor, ClinicalSenior Lecturer, or Clinical Lecturer inaccordance with the resolutions of theAcademic Board;

(h) not more than five students elected inthe manner prescribed by resolution ofthe Senate;

(i) the President of the Dental HealthEducation and Research Foundationwithin the University of Sydney;

(j) theGeneral Superintendent of WestmeadHospital;

(k) the Director of Dental Services atWestmead Hospital and the Director ofDental Services at the United DentalHospital;

(I) the Director of the Institute of DentalResearch;

(m) the Director of Dental Services of theDepartment of Health of New SouthWales;

(n) one nominee of each of the RoyalAustralasian College of Dental Surgeonsand the Australian Dental Association(New South Wales Branch); and

(o) such other persons as may be appointedby the Faculty on the nomination of theDean, for such period as determined bythe Faculty.

2. The election of members pursuant to section1(f) shall be held at the last meeting of the Faculty ineach alternate year and the members so elected shallhold office from 1 January of the year following theirelection until the next election but conterminouslywith their membership of the part-time teaching staff.

Student membership of the FacultyThe resolutions of the Senate make provision for fivestudents to be elected to membership of the Faculty ofDentistry. The five students shall comprise:

(a) the President of the Sydney UniversityDental Undergraduates' Association,provided he or she is a student enrolledfor a degree or diploma in the Faculty ofDentistry (ex officio),

(b) one student enrolled for a postgraduatedegree or for a diploma in the Faculty ofDentistry, provided that if there is nonomination of a postgraduate studentthe vacancy may be filled by anundergraduate student,

(c) three other students.The Senate resolutions for the student membership ofthe Faculty of Dentistry are set out in full in theUniversity's Statutes and Regulations 1994-95.

Students may also become members of otheruniversity bodies.

Consideration was first given in 1897 to the possibilityof establishing a School of Dentistry in the Universityof Sydney, when a provisional curriculum was drawnup by the Senate. However, in the absence of any lawin New South Wales regulating the practice ofdentistry, it was not considered appropriate to takeany definite steps, and no action was taken until thepassing of the Dentists Act in 1900.

The birth of the dental profession in New SouthWales occurred on I January 1901, when the DentistsAct became operative. Prior to this time, there were nolaws governing the practice of dentistry in New SouthWales. Any person could set up in dental practice.However, there were some dentists trained in Englandwho were in practice in the colony, and these peopleworked hard to lay the groundwork for a dentalschool and to establish the practice of dentistry on aprofessional basis.

The Dentists Act provided for the licensing of dentalpractitioners who presented evidence of theirqualification to a Board created for the purpose by theAct. The Act recognised any qualification whichmightbe awarded by the University of Sydney, and therewas therefore no further reason for delay inestablishing a dental school. In 1901 a Committee ofthe Senate was appointed to complete thearrangements for the opening of a dental school. ADepartment of Dental Studies was established, withthe Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at its head. InMarch 1901 the Dental School opened, with seventeenstudents.

The Dental School offered a curriculum of threeyears leading to a Licence in Dentistry. The courseconsisted of basic science subjects such as chemistry,physics, anatomy and physiology; the medical subjectsmateria medica, pathology and surgery; and clinicaldentistry.

A Board of Dental Studies was established,consisting of the Chancellor, the Deputy Chancellorand the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (Chairman),as well as the professors and lecturers in the subjectsof the dental curriculum and the members of thehonorary staff in the Dental Hospital. The first meetingof the Board was held on 12 February 1901. ProfessorSir Thomas Anderson Stuart, the Dean of the Facultyof Medicine, worked tirelessly, first to establish theDental School and then following its inception, topromote its activities.

Initially it was proposed that dental students shouldobtain clinical training in the dental department ofSydney Hospital, but this was found to beimpracticable. The University Dental Hospital wastherefore established in 1901 for the purpose ofproviding dental care for persons unable to pay normaldental fees and also for the purpose of clinicalinstruction to dental students of the University. TheHospital's business was carried out in a building atthe corner of George and Bathurst Streets in the cityopposite St Andrew's Cathedral. In 1900 a DentalHospital of Sydney was also established by the N.S.W.Government, to provide dental care for the poor.Subsequently the two hospitals were amalgamatedby Act of Parliament in 1905, to form the UnitedDental Hospital of Sydney. The United Dental Hospitalwas established in a building on its present site inChalmers Street, Surry Hills, Sydney.

Apart from the medical members, the Departmentof Dental Studies consisted of seven dental staff:

In 1905 theSenate established the degree of Bachelorof Dental Surgery; and a curriculum of four years'duration was approved for this purpose. Specialarrangements were made to permit students holdingthe Licence of Dentistry to be admitted to the degreeafter a year of further study. In 1906 the first candidateswere admitted to the degree of Bachelor of DentalSurgery. There were thirteen candidates for the degree,including two women. Following its establishment,the Board of Dental Studies continued to plan for theeventual development of a Faculty of Dentistry. In1910 the board proposed that a degree of Doctor ofDental Science, similar to the degree of Doctor ofMedicine, be established in the University of Sydney.In 1920 the generosity of the McCaughey benefactionmade possible the establishment of several newFaculties in the University, including a Faculty ofDentistry. The first meeting of the Faculty of Dentistry,at which seven members were present, was held on 8July 1920, and Dr Fairfax Reading was elected firstDean.

The establishment of the Dental School and its laterdevelopment as a Faculty owes much to theendeavours and the ability of Richard Fairfax Reading.Fairfax Reading, who held qualifications in medicineand dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons inEngland, commenced practice as a dentist in Sydneyin 1889 and, together with other dental colleagues andwith Sir Thomas Anderson Stuart, had worked tocreate a dental school within the University of Sydney.He became the first part-time Director of Dental Studiesand subsequently full-time director and then Professorof Dentistry. He was Dean of the Faculty from 1921until his retirement in 1934. Fairfax Reading raised the

standards of dentistry as a profession in New SouthWales and firmly established dental undergraduatetraining in the University.

In the 1920s there was considerable concern in theFaculty about transferring the dental hospital to themain grounds of the University, preferably to beassociated with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.Only an absence of funds prevented the Senate fromadopting this proposal.

The degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery of theUniversity of Sydney was recognised by the GeneralMedical Council of the United Kingdom for thepurpose of registration in Great Bri tain and its colonies.In 1926 the Senate approved the introduction of thedegree of Doctor of Dental Science, and in the followingyear the first degree was awarded. In 1934 Dr A. J.Arnott was appointed to the Chair of Dentistryfollowing the retirement of Dr Fairfax Reading.Professor Arnott, who had previously beenSuperintendent of the United Dental Hospital, waselected Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, a position heheld until his retirement in 1964.

The Australian Dental Association, N.S.W. Branch,was established in 1927 with the active support of theFaculty of Dentistry and in 1928 the federal body, theAustralian Dental Association, came into being.

In 1934 the Dentists Act was amended. Theprincipal change was the abolition of a system ofapprenticeship, which had allowed dentists to takeapprentices or pupils in return for payment. TheUniversity of Sydney was now recognised as theonly institution for training recognised dentalpractitioners in New South Wales.

The 1930s saw an increase of interest in dentalresearch, and the N.S.W. and CommonwealthGovernments provided funds to the Faculty for thispurpose. In 1936 the Faculty resolved to extend thecurriculum of four years for the BDS degree into a fifthyear. The degree became a full five-year course in the1960s following a visit of inspection by the GeneralDental Council of the United Kingdom.

In 1939 a new building was established for theFaculty of Dentistry within the United Dental Hospital.The postwar period saw an expansion of the activitiesof the United Dental Hospital. In 1946 a Director of theDepartments of Pathology and Bacteriology at theHospital was appointed. In the same year the Instituteof Dental Research was established at the Hospitalwith the approval of the N.S.W. Government. TheInstitute, which was established to promote dentalresearch, was based on the National Institute of DentalResearch in Bethesda, Maryland, U.S.A. Dr N. E.Goldsworthy, Senior Lecturer in Bacteriology in theFaculty of Medicine, was appointed the first director.

In the 1940s the staff of the Faculty was considerablystrengthened. In the early part of the decade threelecturers were appointed, and later three positions ofsenior lecturer were established in the fields of dentalpathology (1947), preventive dentistry (1948) andoperative dentistry (1948). Subsequently, in 1954 and1955, three associate professors in these fields wereappointed. An additional lecturer in operativedentistry was appointed in 1952. In 1947 thePostgraduate Committee in Dental Science was

established, to promote and develop programs ofcontinuing education for the dental profession.

In 1959 the Faculty established the Diploma inPublic Health Dentistry. The degree of Master ofDental Science was established in 1964. This was thefirst full-time formal postgraduate degree in dentistryin Australia.

In 1961 the Senate resolved to establish three chairsin the Faculty, in the fields of prosthetic dentistry,operative dentistry, and preventive dentistry.Associate Professors Graham, Lyell and Martin wereappointed to these chairs respectively. In 1964Professor Arnott retired and Dr M. Jolly succeededhim as McCaughey Professor of Oral Surgery.Professor Arnott (1899-1973) had made a distinguishedcontribution to the development of the teaching ofdentistry, to the planning and building of the UnitedDental Hospital and to the establishment of the Instituteof Dental Research. He was succeeded by ProfessorLyell as Dean of the Faculty. In 1970 Professor Martinbecame Dean of the Faculty, retiring in December1988. Professor Hume was elected Dean in January1989 and resigned in September 1990. ProfessorKlineberg was elected Dean to March 1992 and undera revised University policy became the first appointedDean for a five-year term 1992 to 1996.

The 1970s were a period of concern aboutredevelopment of dental teaching and researchfacilities and revision of the undergradua te curriculum.The MGM Building adjoining the United DentalHospital was purchased by the Health Commission ofNew South Wales with the financial support of theAustralian Universities Commission, and wasconverted into facilities for the Faculty. Planningcommenced for a second clinical school to beestablished in the Westmead Centre, a major newhospital complex in the western suburbs of Sydney(now known as Westmead Hospital). The Hospitalwas opened for medical patients in 1978 and acceptedits first dental patients in 1980.

In line with developments in dental and healthsciences education throughout the world, the Facultyembarked in 1970 on a review of its undergraduatecurriculum. Radical changes were adopted and thefirst students were accepted into the new BDS coursein 1978.

The Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Sydneyis now the largest dental school in Australia. It has themost extensive postgraduate and continuing educationprograms. For many years the Faculty has beenresponsible for training dentists for those states inAustralia and for neighbouring countries withoutdental schools. Dental graduates of many countries inAsia have undertaken their postgraduate studies atthe University of Sydney over the last twenty-fiveyears. Through the superior quality of its graduatesand its postgraduate training and research, the Facultyhas established a strong international reputation andhas been responsible for promoting the higheststandards of dental care in Australia.

In 1994 a new Faculty structure was introducedwith the establishment of a School of Dental Studies.There are no longer four Departments withDepartmental Heads and Disciplines grouped within

Departments. There is now a Head of School, andwithin the School individual Disciplines are identified.Directors of Years are appointed to coordinatecoursework for each year and Course Coordinatorsare responsible for individual courses in each year.

In keeping with the principle of continuingevaluation and development, a complete review ofthe curriculum is currently in progress.

Undergraduate deg ee requirements

In 1978 the Faculty of Dentistry introduced a five-yearcurriculum for the BDS degree. The course aims atproviding a basic training for dentists and givinggraduates a rational approach to the practice ofdentistry in the light of existing knowledge, so thatthey may understand and use the new developmentsthat they will later encounter in dental practice.Training for the practice of dentistry is a lifelongprocess, of which undergraduate study is only thefirst step. The object of the undergraduate course is toprovide dental practitioners with the scientific basisfor future studies and to equip them with sufficientskills to begin the practice of dentistry immediatelyafter graduation.

The curriculum attempts to integrate the basicsciences and the preclinical, paraclinical and clinicalcomponents of the course. Students are introduced toclinical experience early in the course, and thecoordination of courses and disciplines is emphasisedto enable them to identify with dentistry at thebeginning of their studies and to prepare them formodern concepts of total oral health care. In line withcurrent developments in health care educationthroughout the world, there is an emphasis on thebehavioural sciences relating to dentistry and also onthe practice of dentistry in a community health setting.

Whilststill retaining the best features of its traditionalteaching the Faculty believes the curriculum willproduce, at the end of five years, a graduate equippedto cope with dentistry as practised in the concludingyears of the twentieth century, and prepared for thepractice of dentistry in the twenty-first.

RegulationsThe resolutions of the Senate governing the degrees ofBachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Science(Dental) are reproduced below.Bachelor of Dental Surgery1. (1) A course shall consist of lectures,

seminars or tutorials, together with such clinicaland laboratory instruction or practical work,exercises or essays as may be prescribed by theFaculty.(2) In these resolutions, the words 'tocomplete a course' and derivative expressionsmean:(a) to attend all lectures, seminars or

tutorials, and clinical and laboratoryinstruction;

(b) to complete satisfactorily the practicalwork, exercises or essays if any; and

(c) to pass the examinations in the course.

2. (1) An examination shall be held for each ofthe prescribed courses of study for the degree.

(2) At each examination a candidate may berequired to give proof of the candidate'sknowledge by practical or viva voceexaminations, and the results of such tests maybe taken into account in determining the resultsof the examinations.

3. A candidate for the degree shall, during theFirst Year, complete the following courses:

The histology course begins inSemester 2 and providesa general grounding in histology to serve as a basis forunderstanding the clinical components of the coursesuch as oral biology and pathology and to combinewith other preclinical subjects to provide anunderstanding of the human body in health anddisease. In First Year the morphology of cells andtissues is considered in a course consisting of onelecture and one two-hour practical period per week.Each practical session is preceded by a slide tutorialdemonstration. In this semester there are also sixlectures and two hours of practical work onembryology.

The practical classes are problem-oriented andrequire the student to work from microscope slides,textbook and lecture material to complete exercises intheir practical books. The formal lecture course begins in Semester 1 andcontinues until the end of Semester 2. The main thrust of the Fifth Year course is to providea firm grounding in the basic skills of oral surgery,thus enabling students to develop understanding andproficiency in minor oral surgery at general dentalpractitioner level, and to bridge the gap betweendentist and specialist oral surgeon.

A formal lecture program is presented during firstsemester, addressing advanced assessment using up-to-date techniques of diagnosis, and providing an in-depth knowledge of pre- and post-operativemanagement procedures. Theoretical and practicalteaching is also given in the use of relative analgesia togeneral practitioner level.

The course in Clinical Dentistry incorporatesendodontics, fixed prosthodontics, gerodontics,occlusion, oral pathology and oral medicine, oral andmaxi llofacial surgery, orthodontics, paediatricdentistry, periodontics, removable prosthodontics andtooth conservation, as well as an individual or groupresearch project.

The basis of this course is clinical experience,through provision of integrated multidisciplinarypatient care at Westmead Hospital Dental ClinicalSchool, as well as clinical rotations at the UnitedDental Hospital and at the Prince of Wales Hospital.In addition, there are clinical attachments to RoyalNewcastle Hospital and Riverina Health ServiceClinics, visits to selected Public, Defence and HealthFund Clinics, and private practitioner visits under theauspices of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Clinicaloptions comprise rural or international attachmentsduring semester breaks.

Each student is comprehensively assessed as tocompetence to practise a wide range of procedures ingeneral dentistry. A clinical log book must bemaintained for assessment, and familiarity with arange of complex procedures is tested. Each studentmust demonstrate a careful, studied and ethicalapproach to the practice of clinical dentistry, andrecognition of the need for ongoing postgraduateeducation.

The course is based primarily on those legal principlesand statutes which relate to dentistry. The lectures areused to explain the Australian legal system and legalprinciples of relevant tort law (i.e. negligence andassault), contract and criminal law and theirapplication to dental practice. The Dentists Act andRegulations, the function of the Dental Board,disciplinary powers and advertising regulations arecovered. Other acts impinging on dental practice suchas industrial relations, consumer Iggislation,radioactive substances, and poisons are considered.

Orientation and enrolmentFirst Year timetableThe First Year timetable will be available during theorientation period.

Registration in First YearAt the time of enrolment students are assigned to a

First Year section and are allocated a particulartimetable of First Year courses. All are required tocomplete Faculty registration upon enrolment.

You must attend lectures and practical classes onlyat the times and locations indicated for your section.

Transfers between FacultiesStudents who enrol in one degree course and pass thecourses prescribed for another degree course have notthe right to transfer to that other degree course, butmay be admitted by the Faculty or Board of Studiesconcerned on merit to the extent the facilities areavailable. It should be noted that the opportunities fortransferring from other Faculties into the Faculty ofDentistry are limited, and competition for entry onthat basis is keen.

If you wish to apply for enrolment in the Faculty ofDentistry with credit for courses completed at theUniversity of Sydney or at another institution youmust apply through the Universities AdmissionsCentre in accordance with the procedure outlined inthe Undergraduate Prospectus, available free from theFaculty Office.

Confirmation of enrolmentAll the information provided when you enrol is addedto the University's computerised student recordsystem. This includes your degree, academic year andthe courses you are taking. It is important that thisinformation be recorded correctly at the beginning ofthe year, and amended should a change occur in anyof the details during the year. You should be awarethat every course enrolment has a financial implicationthrough the Higher Education Contribution Scheme(HECS).

To enable you to see what enrolment data has beenrecorded, you will be sent a 'confirmation of enrolment'notice shortly after completion of enrolment. Youshould check this carefully. If the information &correctyou should keep the notice as a record of your currentenrolment. Should the notice be incorrect in any detail,you should apply at the Student Centre immediatelyto have your record amended. A new confirmationwill then be prepared and sent to you. You will alsoreceive, about two months after the beginning of eachsemester, a statement showing your HECS assessmentfor that semester. If there appears to be an error in thisassessment, you should follow the directions forcorrection of the assessment which are included onthe statement.

If you wish to:• change a course in which you are enrolled• discontinue a course• discontinue enrolment totallyyou should apply at the Student Centre for theappropriate form and then at your Faculty office toobtain approval. Your record at the University will

not be correct unless you do this. It is not sufficient forinstance to tell the lecturer, or even the Departmentaloffice that you discontinued a course. Unless anenrolment change is approved formally at your FacultyOffice it will not be officially recorded and in somecases will incur a financial liability under HECS.

Regulations:Discontinuation of enrolment and re-enrolmentafter discontinuation — undergraduateAll Faculties, Colleges and Boards of Studies1. A candidate fora degree of bachelor who ceasesattendance at classes must apply to the Faculty, CollegeBoard or Board of Studies concerned and will bepresumed to have discontinued enrolment from thedate of application, unless evidence is produced (i)that the discontinuation occurred at an earlier dateand (ii) that there was good reason why the applicationcould not be made at the earlier time.2. A candidate for a degree of bachelor who at anytime during the first year of attendance discontinuesenrolment in all courses shall not be entitled to re-enrol for that degree unless the Faculty, College Boardor Board of Studies concerned has granted priorpermission to re-enrol or the person is re-selected foradmission to candidature for that degree.3. Subject to provisos (i) and (ii) of section 1, nocandidate for a degree of bachelor may discontinueenrolment in a course or year after the end of lecturesin that course or year.4. The Dean, Pro-Dean or a Sub-Dean of a Faculty,Director or Deputy Director of a College or theChairperson of a Board of Studies, may act on behalfof that Faculty, College Board or Board of Studies inthe administration of these resolutions unless theFaculty, College Board or Board of Studies concerneddecides otherwise.

WITHDRAWAL FROM FULL-YEAR AND FIRST SEMESTER COURSES

5. A candidate for a degree of bachelor whodiscontinues enrolment in a full-year or First Semestercourse on or before 30 March in that year shall berecorded as having withdrawn from that course.

WITHDRAWAL FROM SECOND SEMESTER COURSES

6. A candidate for a degree of bachelor whodiscontinues enrolment in a Second Semester courseon or before 30 August in that year shall be recordedas having withdrawn from that course.

7. (1) A discontinuation of enrolment in acourse shall be recorded as 'Discontinued withPermission' when the discontinuation occursafter the relevant withdrawal period and(a) on or before the Friday of the first week

of Second Semester fora full-year course,Or

(b) up to the last day of the seventh week ofteaching in a one-semester course.

(2) A discontinuation of enrolment in acourse shall be recorded as 'Discontinued' whenthe discontinuation occurs

(a) after the Friday of the firstweek of SecondSemester for a full-year course, or

(b) after the last day of the seventh week ofteaching in a one-semester course.

(3) Notwithstanding paragraph (2) the Dean,Pro-Dean or Sub-Dean of the Faculty, Directoror Deputy Director of theCollege or Chairpersonof the Board of Studies concerned maydetermine that a discontinuation of enrolmentshould be recorded as 'Discontinued withPermission' on the grounds of serious ill-healthor misadventure.

InstrumentsStudents are required to provide certain instrumentsfor their own use in practical and clinical dentistry.The cost of these instruments (which exceeds $3000for the whole course) can be ascertained from theDean's Office or from any of the dental supplycompanies.

Examinations

In addition individual Disciplines may examine atother times and by various methods of assessment,such as essays, assignments, viva voce, practical work,etc. Some Disciplines do not examine during the firstsemester.

Notification of examination resultsThe results of annual examinations are posted throughthe mail service directly to you at the end of the year.As a back-up, the results are also displayed onnoticeboards in the Main Quadrangle.

Disclosure of examination marksFinal marks will appear on your annual result notice.Marks may also be obtained from your Faculty for themajor components of assessment which make up thefinal marks. You are entitled to information about anydetails of the assessment procedures used to determinethe final result.

Your examination scripts and any other assessmentmaterial may be retrieved for a short period after thecompletion of assessment in each course. This doesnot apply to examination papers which involve therepeated use of the same material in successiveexaminations.

Examination marks (as opposed to examinationgrades) are treated as personal information andtherefore disclosed only to the student concerned.However, information will be made available to helpyou gauge your comparative performance in class.

Supplementary examinationsGeneralSupplementary examinations are awarded by theBoard of Examiners following in general the Senateresolutions. Because a candidate is expected to achievea pass in all courses prescribed for that Year as aminimum requirement, supplementary examinationsare regarded as privileges and not rights.

Subject to modification by the Board of Examinersin the light of certified illness or other misadventure,the following rules shall apply to the awarding ofsupplementary examinations for candidates for thedegree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery:

Eligibility(1) Subject to section (2), to be considered for asupplementary examination in a course or part of acourse, a candidate must:

(i) have achieved an average mark of atleast 50 per cent over all courses for thatyear;

(ii) have achieved a mark in that course ofbetween 40 and 49 per cent;

(iii) have failed in not more than two coursesin that Year;

(iv) have not failed in that course previously.

Supplementary Examination to Count as Annual(XTCA) and Postponed Annual Examination(2) (i) Candidates who submit an application

for Special Considerationafter the AnnualExamination will not normally be entitledto be awarded a Supplementary Examin-ation to Count as Annual. Such candi-dates may be permitted, at the discretionof the examiner, to sit for a PostponedAnnual Examination.

(ii) A Postponed Annual Examination willnormally take place within one weekafter the scheduled Annual Examinationbut before the Board of Examinersmeeting.

(iii) A Supplementary Examination to Countas Annual may be awarded only by theBoard of Examiners as a result of anapplication for Special Consideration,normally submitted prior to the AnnualExamination.

(iv) No further Supplementary Examinationwill be awarded following the award ofa Supplementary Examination to Countas Annual.

(v) A student recommended for the awardof a Supplementary Examination willnot be permitted to sit for that examin-ation where a result of Fail on the Year isrecorded.

(vi) A candidate awarded a Supplementaryto Count ac Annual will be permitted tosit for the examination, notwithstandinga result of Fail on the Year is recorded.

Exemptions/Credit for courses alreadycompleted, to be counted towards the degree ofBachelor of Dental Surgery(1) Except with the permission of the Faculty, acandidate for the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgeryseeking credit for an equivalent course completedpreviously or for exemption from re-enrolment in acourse prescribed for the degree will normally berequired to have achieved a result of Credit or higherin that course.(2) Exemptions from re-enrolment will not begranted for courses in clinical disciplines.

Illness or misadventureYou may apply to the Faculty in writing for specialconsideration of your examination performance ongrounds of illness or misadventure. In the chse ofillness a medical certificate should be provided. Theminimum requirements of a medical certificate arethat it:

(a) be submitted and signed by your ownmedical practitioner and indicate thedates on which you sought attention;

(b) certify unambiguously a specified illnessor medical disability for a definite period;

(c) indicate the degree of your incapacity,and express a professional opinion as tothe effect of your illness on your abilityto take an examination.

Certificates in connection with annual or supple-mentary examinations should be submitted prior tothe examinations, unless the illness or misadventuretakes place during the examinations, in which case theevidence must be forwarded as soon as practicable,and in any case before the close of the examinationperiod. There is a special form available at the StudentCentre and at the University Health Service forsubmission with medical certificates.

For consideration on the grounds of misadventure,your application must include a full statement ofcircumstances and any available supporting evidence.

Should you find it embarrassing to state yourdifficulties in writing you should arrange an interviewwith the Dean of the Faculty. Such a request might bemade in the form of a note addressed to the Dean.

The need to seek early adviceMany students in need of advice fail to make full useof the assistance available to them. If you believe thatyour performance during a course, or your preparationfor your examinations, has been adversely affected bymedical, psychological or family circumstances, youshould seek advice as early as possible. Members of

the teaching staff, of the University CounsellingService, and of the University Health Service, are allavailable for consultation and can give advice onappropriate action to take.

Exclusion:Restriction upon re-enrolmentThere are certain circumstances in which you could beasked to show good cause why you should bepermitted to repeat any previously attempted study.Liability for exclusion from re-enrolment is determinedby academic attainment during the immediate pastone or two academic years (depending upon theFaculty, College or Board of Studies concerned). Theresolutions of the Senate restricting re-enrolment maybe found in the University's Statutes and Regulations1994-95. You should acquaint yourself with the studiesin which you are enrolled. If you are in any doubtabout your liability for exclusion following academicfailure or discontinuation of courses you should askadvice of the Exclusions Office.

It is not possible to define in advance all the reasonsthat constitute 'good cause' but serious ill health, ormisadventure properly attested, will be considered.In addition your general record, for example in othercourses, would be taken into account. In particular ifyou were transferring from another faculty your recordin your previous faculty would be considered. Notusually acceptable as good cause are such matters asdemands of employers, pressure of employment, timedevoted to non-university activities and so on, exceptas they may be relevant to any serious ill health ormisadventure.

Extract from Resolutions of the Senate relating toRestriction upon Re-enrolment:Faculty of Dentistry13. The Senate authorises the Faculty of Dentistryto require a student to show good cause why he or sheshould be allowed to re-enrol in the Faculty of Dentistrywhen he or she has failed the Second Year or anyhigher year in the Faculty, if he or she has alreadytaken more than one year of enrolment to completethe requirements of the preceding year.

Subject to the Senate resolutions on restrictionupon re-enrolment, the Faculty may require a studentto show good cause why he or she should be allowedto re-enrol in the Faculty of Dentistry First Yearcourses.

LibraryThe Fairfax Reading Library, which is the Dentistrybranch of the University of Sydney Library, is situatedon the first floor of the Faculty Wing adjacent to theUnited Dental Hospital. It houses books, periodicals,pamphlets, reprints, etc. which belong to three sections,namely the University of Sydney Library, UnitedDental Hospital and Institute of Dental Research. Thebooks and periodicals are on open access and areavailable to both staff and students. Library hours are9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday, except thatduring semester the library is open 9.00 am to 7.00 pmon Mondays and Wednesdays.

Students may borrow books for a period of twoweeks. The usual borrowing rules are observed.

A large health sciences library has been establishedin Westmead Hospital and is available for use bymedical and dental students training at the hospital.

Faculty societiesSydney University Dental Undergraduates'AssociationThe SUDUA, which was functioning in the 1930s andperhaps earlier, comprises all undergraduates enrolledin the Faculty of Dentistry. All members on gradua tionbecome honorary life members.

The object of the Association is to provide themeans for expanding the interests of the studentsbeyond the curriculum of the dental course and tomaintain the traditions and faculty spirit that havealways characterised the dental undergraduate body.The Association also facilitates a close liaison betweenstudents and staff of the Faculty.

The Association elects an executive and alsorepresentatives to the Students' RepresentativeCouncil and the Outside Common Rooms Committeeof the University Union. Thus the dental under-graduates are able to voice their opinions in the variousuniversity associations.

Regular meetings are held, a t which general businessin the interests of the Association is discussed, papersare read, and lectures given. Inter-faculty activitiesare arranged by the Association. Sporting and socialfunctions are conducted, including the annual dentalball and the informal dance each term. The Articulator,the journal of the Association, is published annually.

The SUDUA operates a student cooperative whichsells instruments at a reduced rate.

Dental Alumni Society of the University ofSydneyFounded in 1943, the Dental Alumni Society is apostgraduate society. Some of the more importantaims of the Society are to maintain and foster theassociation of dental graduates with the University, topromote cultural activities, to extend cordialrelationships between graduates and undergraduatesof the Faculty of Dentistry, and to take an interest inany matter within the University that will be of benefitto the Faculty of Dentistry.

Graduates of the Faculty of Dentistry areautomatically General Members of the Society andbecome Financial Members on payment of a smallannual subscription.

Dental Alumni Society MuseumThis Museum within the Faculty of Dentistry is situatedin the United Dental Hospital. It is an historicalmuseum consisting of early dental instruments andequipment of a small nature and at the moment it ishoused incabinets outside the Fairfax Reading Library.It is hoped that in the future it will be enlarged tohouse large equipment and photographs anddocuments describing dental science and practice ofthe past.

The museum display can be inspected at any timethe United Dental Hospital is open.

Dental Board of New South WalesThe Dental Board of New South Wales is empoweredunder Section 18 of the Dentists Act 1934-1964 toappropriate moneys from the Dental Board Educationand Research Account for or towards dental educationand research.

The Board is prepared to give consideration to thegranting of financial assistance to students in theFaculty of Dentistry in the form of loans. The individualapplicant is required to show the Board that he or sheis of good character, is unable to find financialaccommodation elsewhere, and is otherwise innecessitous circumstances. Surety for the amount ofthe application should also be arranged.

Funds are limited and loans must therefore berestricted accordingly.

Successful applicants are required to executeagreements in due course. Application forms areavailable from the Registrar of the Board, 52 BridgeStreet, Sydney.

The Goldsworthy-Sullivan Memorial PrizeEstablished in 1962 by a donation from the DentalAlumni Society of the University of Sydney to endowa prize in memory of Dr N.E. Goldsworthy and DrH.R. Sullivan. Awarded annually to the final yearstudent proceeding to the degree of Bachelor of DentalSurgery who has been most proficient in the fields oforal biology and the entire degree course. The prizetakes the form of a medal.

Port Dental Laboratories PrizeEstablished in 1979 by G.H. Port Dental LaboratoriesPty Limited. Awarded annually to the final yearcandidate for the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgerywho shows the greatest proficiency in the subjectstooth conservation and prosthodontics, provided thatthe candidate's work is of sufficient merit. Value $250.

The Richard Belitho Bush Memorial PrizeFounded in 1969 by a bequest from the late RichardBelitho Bush. Awarded annually to a student studying

dentistry at the University of Sydney, such prize to beawarded at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty ofDentistry. Value $350.

Brigadier Gordon Rowell PrizeDonated by Brigadier A. Gordon Rowell, CBE, ED,QHDS. Awarded annually to a student in the final yearof the course for the degree of Bachelor of DentalSurgeryfor proficiency in preventive dentistry. Value $130.

R.G. Schamschula PrizeEstablished in 1991 by a donation of $2500 from theInstitute of Dental Research to honour Dr R.G.Schamschula, DDSc, a graduate of the Faculty ofDentistry and distinguished member of the Institutefor 20 years, including eight years as DeputyDirector. Awarded annually on the recommendationof the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry to the studentwho presents the best research project as part of thesummer vacation research project, provided thatthe work is of sufficient merit. A written report onthe project, a supervisor's report and an oralpresentation by the candidate will be taken intoaccount. The prize shall take the form of a medaland a certificate.

Stephen Maxwell O'Henly PrizeEstablished in 1993 by a gift from Mr Don O'Henly toestablish a prize in the Faculty of Dentistry in memoryof his son, Stephen Maxwell O'Henly, who graduatedBachelor of Dental Surgeryin 1978. Awarded annuallyon the recommendation of the Head of Discipline ofOral Pathology and Oral Medicine to the candidatefor the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery who is themost proficient in the Discipline of Oral Pathologyand Oral Medicine over the entire course, providedthe student's work is of sufficient merit. Value $500and a medal.

The Winifred Nettle Ockenden BequestEstablished in 1970 by a bequest from the late E.E.M.Ockenden to provide short-term interest-free loans toa maximum value of $50. Preference is given to studentsin the Faculty of Dentistry.

Prizes for academic meritThe Faculty of Dentistry also awards a large numberof prizes awarded automatically on the basis ofacademic merit.

Awards and honoursHigh distinction, distinction and credit are awardedto students who, at the annual examinations, attain acertain percentage in individual subjects.

First class honours and second class honours areawarded on graduation to students whose aggregatemarks reach a certain standard. This aggregate isbased on the work of the First, Second, Third, Fourthand Fifth years.

University MedalThe University Medal is awarded on graduation to astudent who has merited first class honours and whohas beenshown to be the most distinguished candidatefor the degree.

Postgradua

The regulations governing the degrees of Master ofDental Surgery, Master of Dental Science, Master ofScience in Dentistry, Doctor of Dental Science, theGraduate Diploma in Public Health Dentistry anc1theGraduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry, published inthe University Statutes and Regulations 1994-95, arereproduced below. These should be read in conjunctionwith Chapter 10 of the by-laws of the University,which deals with admission to candidature for thePhD degree, for any master's degree, and for anydiploma, for graduates of other universities or thosewith equivalent qualifications. Some information onthe degree of Doctor of Philosophy is also providedbelow.

Resolutions of the SenateMaster of Dental Surgery (MDS)1. (1) An applicant for admission to

candidature for the degree of Master of DentalSurgery shall:(a) except as provided in subsection (2) be a

Bachelor of Dental Surgery of theUniversity of Sydney; and

(b) apply in writing to the Registrar for suchadmission to candidature and for theapproval of the Faculty.

(2) A graduate in dentistry of anotheruniversity or a candidate with equivalentqualifications obtained in an appropriateinstitutionmay, with the approval of the Facultyand the Academic Board, be admitted tocandidature for the degree.

2. A candidate, unless exempted by the Faculty,shall pass an examination prescribed by the Faculty,not less than one year after admission to candidatureand before complying with section 5.3. The Faculty shall appoint a person who is amember of the academic staff of the University to actas supervisor of thecandidate and may at its discretionappoint a suitably qualified person or persons asassociate supervisor(s).4. The Faculty shall review the progress of eachcandidate annually and on the recommendation ofthe head of the discipline concerned may terminatethe candidature of any candidate who, in the opinionof the Faculty, has not shown evidence of sufficientprogress towards the degree.

5. A candidate for the degree shall, in some branchof dentistry approved by the Faculty:

(1) undertake a critical review of theliterature; and either:

(a) undertake a research project and clinicalinstruction; or

(b) undertake a course of clinical instruction;(2) pass an advanced examination andsubmit a treatise in the approved branch ofdentistry.

6. A candidate shall complete the requirementsfor the degree in not less than three semesters andwithin not more than six years of enrolment.7. The Faculty may deem time spent on workdone towards another degree to be time spent as workdone towards the degree of Master of Dental Surgery,provided the candidate has ceased to be a candidatefor the other degree.8. A candidate shall lodge three copies (printed ortypewritten) of the treatise with the Registrar, inaccordance with the Faculty resolution.9. (1) The Faculty shall appoint two examiners,

of whom at least one shall be an externalexaminer who may be a member of the part-time teaching staff of the Faculty.(2) The examiners shall report to the Faculty,which shall determine the result of theexamination.

10. The degree shall not be conferred until twoyears after the conferring of the degree of Bachelor ofDental Surgery or its equivalent.

Master of Dental Science [MDSc(Discipline)]1. The title of the degree shall include, in

parenthesis, the discipline undertaken.

2. The degree of Master of Dental Science may betaken in the following disciplines:

(a) Endodontics(b) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery(c) Orthodontics(d) Paediatric Dentistry(e) Periodontics(0 Prosthodontics(g) Public Health Dentistry(h) Oral Medicine.

3. (1) An applicant for admission tocandidature for the degree of Master of DentalScience shall:(a) except as provided in subsection (2) be a

Bachelor of Dental Surgery of theUniversity of Sydney;

(b) apply in writing to the Registrar for suchadmission to candidature and for theapproval of the Faculty;

(c) have completed at least two years'general dental practice experience; and

(d) in the cases of disciplines (a), (b), (d), (e)and (f) in section 2, unless exempted bythe Faculty, have satisfactorily completedthe primary Fellowship Examination ofthe Royal Australasian College of DentalSurgeons, or its equivalent.

(2) A graduate in dentistry of anotheruniversity or a candidate with equivalentqualifications obtained in an appropriateinstitutionmay, with the approval of the Facultyand the Academic Board, be admitted tocandidature for the degree.(3) The Faculty may admit an applicant tocandidature on probation for a period notexceeding twelve months and at the end of thatperiod shall review the work of the candidateand confirm or terminate the candidature.(4) A candidate admitted to candidature onprobation whose candidature is subsequentlyconfirmed shall be deemed to have commencedcandidature on the day of admission tocandidature on probation.

4. A candidate for the degree shall:(1) unless exempted by the Faculty, pass anexamination prescribed by the Faculty withinthe first year, and not less than one year beforecomplying with section 8(1);(2) engage for not less than two years as afull-time student or its equivalent part-time inthe University in a course of advanced studyand research in a recognised specialist area, orother area of dentistry approved by the Faculty.

b. The Faculty may deem time spent on workdone towards another higher degree by a candidatebefore admission to candidature for the degree ofMaster of Dental Science, to be time spent or workdone after admission, provided the candidate hasceased to be a candidate for the other degree.6. The Faculty shall appoint a person who is amember of the academic staff of the University to actas supervisor of the candidate and may at its discretionappoint a suitably qualified person or persons asassociate supervisor(s).7. The Faculty shall review the progress of eachcandidate annually and on the recommendation ofthe head of the discipline concerned may terminatethe candidature of any candidate who, in the opinionof the Faculty, has not shown evidence of sufficientprogress towards the degree.8. (1) A candidate shall either submit a thesis

embodying the results of research or an articlereporting the results of research in a formsuitable for publication in a refereed scientificjournal and shall, in addition, pass an advancedexamination as prescribed by the Faculty.(2) A candidate shall state in the thesis,generally in a preface and specificallythroughout the thesis, the sources from whichthe information was derived, the extent to whichthe work of others has been used, and theportion of the work claimed to be original. Thecandidate shall not present as the thesis anywork previously submitted for a degree of thisor any other university, but may incorporatesuch work in the thesis, provided that the workso incorporated is indicated.(3) The candidate shall lodge with theRegistrar three copies (printed or typewritten)of the thesis, in accordance with the Facultyresolution.

(4) The form of the article referred to insubsection (1) shall be as prescribed by theFaculty.

9. A candidate shall complete all specifiedrequirements and, where indicated, all clinicalrequirements of the specialist program.10. (1) The Faculty shall appoint two examiners,

of whom at least one shall be an externalexaminer who may be a member of the part-time teaching staff of the Faculty.(2) The examiners shall report to the Faculty,which shall determine the result of theexamination.

Master of Science In Dentistry (MScDent)1. (1) An applicant for admission to

candidature for the degree of Master of Sciencein Dentistry shall:(a) except as provided in subsection (2) be a

Bachelor of Dental Surgery of theUniversity of Sydney; and

(b) apply in writing to the Registrar for suchadmission to candidature and for theapproval of the Faculty.

(2) A graduate in dentistry of anotheruniversity or a candidate with equivalentqualifications obtained in an appropriateinstitution may, with the approval of the Facultyand the Academic Board, be admitted tocandidature for the degree.

2. A candidate, unless exempted by the Faculty,shall pass an examination prescribed by the Faculty,not less than one year after admission to candidatureand before complying with section 5(2).3. A candidate for the degree shall:(1) engage for a period of not less than twoyears as a full-time student, or its equivalent asa part-time student, in research in some branchof dentistry, approved by the Faculty; and(2) submit a thesis embodying the results ofthe research and may be required, at thediscretion of the Faculty, to pass an advancedexamination in a subject or subjects related tothe work of the thesis.

6. The Faculty may deem time spent on researchwork done towards another higher degree by acandidate before admission to candidature for thedegree of Master of Science in Dentistry to be timespent or work done after admission, provided thecandidate has ceased to be a candidate for the otherdegree.

7. The candidate:(1) shall state in the thesis, generally in a

preface and specifically throughout the thesis,the sources from which the information wasderived, the extent to which the work of othershas been used, and any portion of the thesiswhich is claimed as original;(2) shall not present as the thesis any workpreviously submitted for a degree of this or anyother university but may incorporate such workin the thesis provided that the work soincorporated is indicated; and(3) shall lodge with the Registrar three copies(printed or typewritten) of the thesis, inaccordance with the Faculty resolution.

Doctor of Dental Science (DDSc)1. These resolutions apply to the following degree:

Doctor of Dental Science.2. (1) The Academic Board may, on the

recommendation of the Faculty or Board ofStudies concerned, award the appropriatedegree of Doctor for published work which, inthe opinion of the examiners, has been generallyrecognised by scholars in the field concerned asa distinguished contribution to knowledge orcreative achievement.(2) Without limiting the generality ofsubsection (1), the published work may beregarded as a 'distinguished contribution toknowledge if–(a) it represents a significant advance in

knowledge in its chosen field; or(b) it has given rise to or is a major part of a

significant debate in scholarly books andjournals among recognised scholars inits chosen field; or

(c) it has directly given rise to significantchanges in the direction of research or ofpractice of a newer generation ofrecognised scholars in its chosen field.

Application procedure3. (1) An application for admission to

candidature must satisfy the eligibility foradmission criteria in sections 4, 5 and 6 and beconsidered under the preliminary assessmentprocedure specified in section 8 before beingpermitted to enrol as a candidate for the degree.(2) An applicant should submit to theRegistrar–(a) an application which states the degree

being applied for; gives details ofacademic qualifications held; and givesdetails of association with the University;

(b) a list of the published work which it isproposed to submit for examination; and

(c) a description of the theme of thepublished work and, where there is alarge number of publications whose datesrange over a period of time and whichcontain some range of subject matter, astatement of how these are related to oneanother and to the theme.

Eligibility for admission4. (1) An applicant for admission to candi-

dature for the degree of Doctor shall either havequalified for the award of a degree of theUniversity of Sydney and have met the specificrequirements of subsection (2), or shall satisfythe requirements of section 5.(2) An applicant for the degree of Doctor ofDental Science must have qualified for theaward of the degree of Bachelor of DentalSurgery.

5. (1) The Academic Board, on the recom-mendation of the faculty or board of studiesconcerned, may admit as a candidate for thedegree of Doctor an applicant, not being agraduate of the University of Sydney, who—(a) is either a graduate of another university

or institution or is a person who isaccepted by that faculty or board ofstudies and by the Academic Board ashaving standing equivalent to thatrequired of a graduate of the University;and

(b) in the case of an applicant for the degreeof Doctor referred to in section 4(2), isaccepted by the Faculty or Board ofStudies concerned as having standingequivalent to that requiredin that section;and

(c) has been a full-time member of theacademic staff of the University for atleast three years, or has had such a similarsignificant involvement with the teachingand research of the University as theAcademic Board, on the recommen-dation of the Faculty or Board of Studiesconcerned, considers equivalent.

(2) A candidate admitted under section 4mustbea graduate of at least five years' standingbefore the degree of Doctor can be awarded.(3) A candidate admitted under section 5must have held the qualification by virtue ofwhich he or she was admitted for at least fiveyears before the degree of Doctor can beawarded.

Nature of work to be submitted7. (1) The publications submitted for

examinationshall be a record of original researchundertaken by the candidate, who shall statethe sources from which the information wasderived, the extent to which the work of othershas been made use of, and the portion of thework claimed as original.

(2) The publicationssubmitted for the degreeof Doctor shall include at least one substantialwork.(3) If the publications submitted, whetherpublished in the candidate's sole name or underconjoint authorship, record work carried outconjointly, the candidate shall state the extentto which the candidate was responsible for theinitiation, conduct or direction of such conjointresearch, however published.(4) Where the principal publications, asdistinct from any supporting papers,incorporate work previously submitted for adegree in this or in any other university, thecandidate shall clearly indicate which portionof the publications was so submitted.

Preliminary assessment8. (1) The Dean of the Faculty or chairperson

of the Board of Studies concerned shall appoint,inrespect of each application made, a committeenormally comprising five persons being:(a) the Dean of the Faculty or chairperson of

the Board of Studies concerned;(b) the Head of the Discipline and the

professor most closely associated withthe field of the applicant's work; and

(c) other persons appointed by the Dean orchairperson

(2) The committee shall consider whetherthe applicant is eligible for admission tocandidature, whether the published work is ina field appropriate for the nominated degreeand which the faculty is competent to examineat that level and, if so, shall make an assessmentof the prima facie worthiness for examinationof the published work in terms of section 2 ofthese resolutions.(3) The committee, if it finds that a primafacie case exists, shall recommend to the Facultyor Board of Studies concerned that it recommendto the Academic Board—(a) the admission to candidature if not

qualified under section 4; and(b) the appointment of at least three

examiners of whom at least two shall beexternal examiners.

(4) The Academic Board may appoint furtherexaminers in addition to those recommendedby the faculty of board of studies.

Enrolment9. After the Academic Board has admitted theapplicant, if necessary, and appointed examiners, theapplicant shall submit to the Registrar five copies ofthe published work and of the description of thetheme of the published work and shall enrol as acandidate at the next enrolment period.

Examination10. (1) Each examiner shall make a separate

report as to whether the published work meetsthe requirements as specified in section 2 ofbeing generally recognised by scholars in the

field concerned as a distinguished contributionto knowledge.(2) The reports of the examiners shall beconsidered by the committee appointed undersection 8(1) and a recommendation made to theFaculty or Board of Studies concerned whichshall take note of the terms of section 2 of theseresolutions.(3) The Faculty or Board of Studies may—(a) recommend to the Academic Board that

the degree be awarded;(b) recommend to the Academic Board that

the degree not be awarded;(c) recommend to the Academic Board the

appointment of a further examiner orexaminers.

(4) In making its report to the AcademicBoard under subsection (3), theFaculty or Boardof Studies shall transmit the names of theexaminers and the substance of their reports.

11. The Academic Board shall determine the resultof the candidature.12. On the award of the degree the Registrar shalllodge one bound copy of the published work with theUniversity Librarian.

Graduate Diploma in Public Health Dentistry(DPH Dent)1. (1) The Faculty of Dentistry may admit to

candidature for the Graduate Diploma in PublicHealth Dentistry—(a) a graduate in dentistry of the University

of Sydney; or(b) a graduate of the University of Sydney

who has completed courses acceptableto the Faculty of Dentistry.

(2) The Academic Board may, on therecommendation of the Faculty, admit tocandidature an applicant who has completedcourses acceptable to the Faculty and who—(a) is a graduate of another university; or(b) is registered or registrable as a dental

practitioner in the country in which thedental qualifications were obtained andsuch qualifications have been approvedby the Faculty for the purposes of thediploma.

2. The Faculty shall appoint a person who is amember of the academic staff of the University to actas supervisor of the candidate.

3. A candidate shall—(a) for a period of not less than one year as a

full-time candidate or two years as apart-time candidate follow such courseof studies as the Head of the Discipline ofPublic Health Dentistry prescribes,including Public Health, Dental PublicHealth and Preventive Dentistry;

(b) pass examinations in the subjects ofPublic Health, Dental Public Health andPreventive Dentistry;

(c) within such period after suchexaminations as the Faculty prescribes,submit two copies (printed or typewritten)

of an essay of up to 5000 words on a topicapproved by the Head of the Discipline.

4. The award of the diploma shall be subject to thecompletion of the coursework, the essay and theexaminations to the satisfaction of the Faculty on therecommendation of the Head of the Discipline ofPublic Health Dentistry.5. The diploma shall be awarded in three grades,namely Pass, Credit, Distinction.

Graduate Diploma in Clinical DentistrypipClinDent(Discip/ine)]1. The title of the diploma shall include inparenthesis, the discipline undertaken.2. The Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistrymay be taken in the disciplines (a) Conscious Sedationand Pain Control; (b) Oral Implants'.3. (1) An applicant for admission to

candidature for. the Graduate Diploma inClinical Dentistry shall, except as provided insubsection (2), be a Bachelor of Dental Surgeryof the University of Sydney.(2) An applicant who is a graduate indentistry of another university or havingobtained equivalent qualifications in anappropriate institution, has completed coursesacceptable to the Faculty may be admitted as acandidate by the Academic Board on therecommendation of the Faculty, provided thatthe applicant's qualifications are registrablewith the Dental Board of New South Wales.

4. A candidate shall:(1) (a) (Conscious Sedation and Pain

Control)for a period of not less than oneyear and not more than five years,complete a course of studies offive hundred hours as prescribedby the Faculty which may includeup to two hundred hours fromcourses supervised by theCommittee for ContinuingEducation in Dentistry; and

(b) (Oral Implants)for a period of not less than oneyear and not more than three years,complete a course of studies offive hundred hours as prescribedby the Faculty; and

(2) complete all coursework andassignments and pass the examinationsin the approved courses.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is a researchdegree awarded for a thesis considered to be asubstantially original contribution to the subjectconcerned. Some coursework may be required (mainlyin the form of seminars) but in no case is it a majorcomponent.

Applicants should normally hold a master's degreeor a bachelor's degree withfirst or second class honours

'Subject to Senate approval

of the University of Sydney, or an equivalentqualification from another university or institution.

The degree may be taken on either a full-time orpart-time basis.

In the case of full-time candidates, the minimumperiod of candidature is two years for candidatesholding a master's degree or equivalent, or three yearsin the case of candidates holding a bachelor's degreewith first class or second class honours; the maximumperiod of candidature is normally five years.

Part-time candidature may be approved forapplicants who can demonstrate that they are engagedin an occupation or other activity which leaves themsubstantially free to pursue their candidature for thedegree. Normally the minimum period of candidaturewill be determined on the recommendation of theFaculty but in any case it will not be less than threeyears; the maximum period of candidature is normallyseven years.

The Faculty may also require the candidate to sit forany further examinations it determines.

Enrolment regulationsDiscontinuation of enrolment and readmissionafter discontinuation — postgraduateAll Faculties, Colleges, Boards of Studies andGraduate Schools — all candidates1. A candidate will be presumed to havediscontinued enrolment Ma course, degree or diplomafrom the date of application to the Faculty, CollegeBoard, Board of Studies or GraduateSchool concerned,unless evidence isproduced (i) that thediscontinuationoccurred at an earlier date and (ii) that there was goodreason why the application could not be made at theearlier time.2. A candidate who at any time discontinuesenrolment from a degree or diploma shall not beentitled to re-enrol in that degree or diploma unlessthe candidate is re-admitted to candidature for thatdegree or diploma.3. Subject to paragraphs (i) and (ii) of section 1,candidates may not discontinue enrolment in a courseafter the end of classes in that course, unless thedegree or diploma regulations permit otherwise.4. The Dean, Pro-Dean or a Sub-Dean of a Faculty,Director or Deputy Director of a College, a Chairpersonof a Board of Studies or a Chairperson of a GraduateSchool may act on behalf of that Faculty, CollegeBoard, Board of Studies or Graduate School in theadministration of these resolutions.

Candidates proceeding mainly by courseworkWITHDRAWAL FROM FULL-YEAR AND FIRST SEMESTER COURSES

5. A candidate for a degree or diploma whodiscontinues enrolment in a full-year or First Semestercourse on or before 30 March in that year, shall berecorded as withdrawn from that course.

WITHDRAWAL FROM SECOND SEMESTER COURSES

The Continuing Education in Dentistry Unit has thefollowing objectives:1. To provide courses of continuing education in

all fields of dentistry for dental graduates. Over600 courses have been conducted, and 1996 isthe Continuing Education Unit's 49th year ofoperation. The courses range from short coursesof half-day duration to longer courses conductedover a number of days, either lumped togetheror spread over a number of weeks/months/years. There may be 'hands-on' or lectureprograms, including courses of a specialisednature or general update courses for the generalpractitioner.

2. To provide assistance to the Faculty of Dentistryby way of a half-time lectureship, updatingprograms for Faculty staff and students andassistance in minor equipment needs.

3. To provide funds for research.

The courses, which do not lead to degrees (but maybe included as part of the requirements leading todiplomas), are primarily open to all registered dentists.Attendance certificates are given to participants ofcourses. In addition, medical practitioners and othergroups interested or involved in general fields ofdentistry may also attend. Members of the dentalprofession in New South Wales and the AustralianCapital Territory are regularly circularised and theprogram is also sent to other Australian states and toNew Zealand. Special courses are also advertisedoverseas.

The Committee also invites overseas clinicians andlecturers to present courses, and operates inconjunction with the programs of the Australian DentalAssociation at both the state and federal levels.
