Academic Bridge Program
Who is the UA Academic Bridge Program for? 1. Conditionally admitted and other international students (CESL IEP
students) seeking full-time admission to the UA in a F-T degree program, but lacking the minimum ESL requirement
2. All other students, especially sponsored students, who are not conditionally admitted, but who meet CESL minimum requirements and desire to earn credits for transfer
3. Degree program admitted students at an international university seeking credit-bearing courses to transfer back to their home institution on a short-term, 6-month or academic year, basis
2
Description of Academic Bridge Programs
Academic Bridge program at the UA consists of:
• Sheltered English immersion, credit-bearing courses (3 or 6 credits at a time) offered at the Center for English as a Second Language (ESL) and the Outreach College (academic credit-bearing courses)
• The academic courses are supported by a series of ESL courses acting as a support or bridge
• The number of total class hours per week is 18
• The curriculum is designed as a bridge to the university in that students begin with greater ESL instruction at the beginning and increase their enrollment in academic courses as their English proficiency and grades allow
• Students are enrolled in courses through the Outreach College and are admitted to the UA as undergraduates upon successful completion of the program

A CESL Bridge Course defined
A CESL “bridge course” is an ESL course that supports an academic course by providing language support such as reading and vocabulary development in a specific content area or writing support for a composition course.
Example:
A student taking Psychology 101 would take the full, academic course offered over a 10-week period and attend an ESL Bridge course that supports the student by explicitly reinforcing terms, definitions and concepts specific to psychology.
