The ultimate sustainable drainage solution

SuDS

CONTRACTING

After a number of major flooding events in recent years, there is widespread recognition of the need for more effective and sustainable drainage solutions.

Lafarge Tarmac Contracting has the knowledge and experience to design and install sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to meet a range of site requirements. They offer the durability of our standard pavement products while reducing the risk of flooding and improving the quality of discharged water.

ULTISuDS is an integrated sustainable drainage solution that reduces the risk of flooding by managing surface water at source.

It is designed to manage rainwater from the moment it makes contact with the pavement surface. As a result it transforms surface water from an environmental problem into a valuable resource.

SOLUTION

ULTISuDS provides consistent water holding and release characteristics to reduce the rate and volume of discharge.

Effective water management

Conventional paved surfaces are designed to shed water. Unfortunately, under storm conditions, this can mean large volumes of water rapidly entering water courses and resulting in local flooding. In contrast, Lafarge Tarmac ULTISuDS is designed to capture and control rainwater from the moment as it makes contact with the porous paved surface. This results in significant reductions in the speed and volume of discharged water, reducing the risk of flash flooding.

Improved water quality

As well as reducing flood risk, ULTISuDS provides a degree of passive filtration that improves the quality of the water released into the surrounding environment. Long term studies undertaken by Coventry University have shown a substantial improvement in the quality of discharged water, with retention of high proportions of hydrocarbons and heavy metals. High levels of water filtration and cleansing mean that ULTISuDS is able to transform problem storm-water into a valuable resource, with enhanced amenity value and the potential to reduce utility bills and site management costs.

beNefITSOutstanding performance

ULTISuDS is proven to reduce the risk of flooding in a wide range of environments from retail parks, car parks and driveways to sports surfaces and play areas.

Improved water cleansing

Long term studies have shown that ULTISuDS can significantly improve water quality, by trapping and retaining pollutants like hydrocarbons and heavy metals.

Water harvesting and re-use

When water storage measures are specified, ULTISuDS turns surface rainwater into a valuable resource, with the potential to reduce bills and site management costs.

Enhanced safety

ULTISuDS can improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians by reducing standing water and ice.

Flexibility and cost effectiveness

ULTISuDS can include a range of flood prevention measures according to client requirements, budgets and site conditions.

Ultimate sustainability

Developing sustainable construction solutions is at the heart of Lafarge Tarmac. All products are manufactured in the UK and certified under BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing.

Ultimate support

ULTISuDS is only available for installation by our own expert Contracting division, who evaluate each site to make sure our clients get the right solution and then deliver it to the highest standards.

HOw IT wOrkSUsing Lafarge Tarmac’s experience in developing advanced pavements and specialist base aggregates, ULTISuDS installations offer excellent drainage and water management characteristics.

ULTISuDS has been used successfully in a wide range of applications from retail parks and

driveways, to sports surfaces and play areas.

Typical Applications

ULTISuDS has been used successfully in a wide range of environments from retail parks, car parks and driveways to sports surfaces and play areas. Each system is designed according to client requirements and site conditions. As a result they will incorporate a range of measures from porous asphalt and concrete and base aggregates to infiltration strips, attenuation tanks, ponds and swales

Community centre car park, Bristol

CHALLENGE

Construction of the 2,000m2 car park was a major element of this new purpose built Community Centre. From the start, the client placed a high priority on sustainability and minimising environmental impact.

SOLUTION

After detailed site evaluation and discussion with the client, an integrated sustainable drainage system was proposed. This included a porous asphalt surface layer, supporting porous sub-base, an impermeable membrane and series of sub-surface concrete weirs to increase water holding capacity.

RESULT

ULTISuDS provided a well-drained, all weather parking surface and also helped to reduce the cost and environmental impact of operating the site by supplying water for use on planted areas. Construction materials were supplied locally from quarries within four miles of the site, helping to reduce associated transport costs and emissions.

Large supermarket development, Nottinghamshire

CHALLENGE

Local planning requirements from the district council placed restrictions on the quality and quantity of water discharged from this large retail development. Lafarge Tarmac was asked to present a proposal for a drainage system to meet these stringent requirements.

SOLUTION

The proposed solution required full site excavation to install a series of rainwater management measures designed to capture, hold and slowly release rainwater into local water courses. The system was designed to control the discharge of water from the site, even in storm conditions.

RESULT

The ULTISuDS system was installed on time according to the agreed design parameters and installation guidelines, producing a well drained all-weather surface that eliminated the problem of standing water. The client commented eight weeks after the store launch, that despite heavy rain, the surface had remained free of water.EXPERIENCE

How is ULTISuDS different from a conventional drainage system?

Instead of using impermeable paving, pipes and gulleys, ULTISuDS uses porous surfaces and base aggregates that capture and hold rainwater. This reduces the rate and volume of discharge into the surrounding environment.

How does UlTISuDS improve water quality?

Long term studies have shown that ULTISuDS helps to remove harmful pollutants such as hydrocarbons, trapping them in surface or base layers where they can be partially degraded by micro-organisms.

Where can I use UltiSuDS?

Wherever drainage is a problem we can design an ULTISuDS system to offer the solution. They can be used in a wide range of environments from retail parks, car parks and driveways to sports surfaces and play areas.

What type of paved surface is used?

ULTISuDS is available with a range of pavement types including porous asphalts such as Ultidrive Porous, porous concretes like Hydromedia or decorative aggregates from our Ultinatural range.

Who designs and installs ULTISuDS?

ULTISuDS is designed and installed by our own expert Contracting division who evaluate each site to ensure our clients get the right solution and then deliver it to the highest standards.

What other sustainable drainage solutions are available?

Ultidrive Porous is a permeable asphalt for driveways and car parks. ULTIFLOW is a versatile, high performance aggregate with excellent drainage characteristics.

Is ULTISuDS available with a coloured asphalt paved surface?

ULTISuDS is available with a porous coloured asphalt surface course from our ULTICOLOUR range. This allows effective demarcation of specific areas such as traffic lanes or parking areas.

What sustainability standards does ULTISuDS comply with?

All of our products are manufactured in the UK and certified under BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing.
