Chapter 1: Essentials of Mind Maps A mind map refers to a visual outcome that occurs from a comprehensivebrainstorming over a specified problem or situation. It involves writing yourideas in the form of graphical representation or pictures to obtain a vividpicture of the topic or issue in question. The concepts involved in mind mapping and mind maps have been practicedfor several years now. Such concepts include learning, note taking, visualthinking, problem solving and brainstorming. They have been used byengineers, educations, psychologists, and other professions , which involvedetailed thinking prior to getting into a conclusion. Mind mapping has beenused as a form of creating thinking for many years already. It has first beenevident as far as the 3rd century BC. Porphyry of Tyros, a philosopher is saidto be the first to apply mind mapping to create ideas that help others learneasier. Another adopter of mind mapping and brainstorming is Ramaon Llull. He is aCatalan philosopher as well as the author of the first recognizable work inCatalan literature. Leonardo da Vinci is also said to have applied mindmapping during his note taking sessions. Historians claim that Da Vinci isoften considered as the most prominent individual who popularized mindmapping. Traces of mind mapping were discovered by historians long after Da Vinci inthe late 1950s. This is the period when network semantics is thought to havebeen developed. Network semantics is regarded as a theory that guidesindividuals in developing learning. It was later supported by Ross Quillian aswell as Dr. Alan Collins who was then considered to be the initiator ofmodern mapping. This arose from his heightened commitment in publishingresearches concerning learning and graphical thinking. Quillian and Collinswere said to shape mind mapping’s future as they utilized a sort of a networkwherein all concepts and ideas were integrated through links. These linksshow how a specific object is associated with another. At this point, mind

Page 7: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

mapping has become very much used in sharing concepts, learning, and othercollaborative methods. However, the popularity of mind mapping has been atits peak during the late 1960s through Tony Buzan, a British psychologist.Buzan created a set of rules, which are to be used during the application ofmind mapping. Apart from professional areas, mind mapping is also used in high school, colleges as well as universities. A good number of mind maps are done withthe help of mind mapping software which makes the process more simplified. However, there are still a handful of people who prefer handling them onpaper. Mind mapping software cuts the time needed to redraw things aftermaking rearrangements and amendments. It simply provides the links basedon the inputs and places them in designated areas of mind maps. In addition, mind mapping software is available in web/ cloud-based tools or as a stand-alone application . Other mind mapping programs are also available viasmartphones, making it easy for individuals to brainstorm anytime andanywhere they want. The Significance Most people question the essence in which mind maps can be useful orhelpful. Naturally, they are useful whenever brainstorming is required. Forinstance, you might have experienced having a brilliant idea prior to writingan essay. However, when you tried to write down your idea, you felt like theidea has ran dry. Perhaps you also might have felt that your ideas do notmake sense at all. This often happens when you failed to organize your work properly andcreated all possible ideas related with such work. Thus, this is where mindmaps can be very significant and useful. In most cases a mind map is often considered to be a central idea that can besplit into a number of ideas or themes. It is carried out using markers orcolored pencils. These tools often provide guidelines in determining wherethe ideas come from. Additionally, they aid in reassessing all the ideas. Mindmapping is a method of note taking, which involves diagrams that result asvisual aids. Creating mind maps is easy and learning mind mapping is simple.

Page 8: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

It can simplify your work substantially. When you write your ideas, you usethe left side of your brain, which is more analytical than the right side. Theleft side of the brain is limited when it comes to creative thinking and canonly sustain one idea at a time. On the other hand, the right side of your brainis great for mind mapping. This is because it is the visual part of the brain. Thus, using a mind map will help you get the full picture of all ideas on animmediate basis. You will definitely avoid the processes involved inanalytical thinking that often allow you to reflect on one idea at a time. You do not have to be a good or creative writer. Using a mind map in therequired manner will help you generate wonderful ideas. A mind map is asignificant tool during brainstorming and collaborating images with words, generating wonderful outcomes.

Through mind maps, the ideas or information you collect can easily beunderstood with just one look. Mind Mapping and Your Studies Studying can often result to an overload in the mind regardless of the age. However, the possibilities of such conditions is minimal especially if oneconsiders good work ethics. These techniques are veryuseful in studying as they can help in absorbing or understanding lessons andinformation. As a result, the outcome is likely to be higher or improvedgrades as well as a fruitful academic career. Mind mapping techniques also involve the generation of charts that arebeneficial in the development or improvement of study habits. They can helpone improve their note-taking skills as well as take less time in organizingand compiling their notes. This is possible since mind mapping charts onlyhave the keyword that is vital to the lesson being studied. Additionally, it ispossible to recall a great percentage of information inputted in the mind mapsas one studies for the exams or writes an easy. Mind mapping charts areeasier to memorize as compared to conventional notes; thus, your grades willimprove immensely. These charts are also useful references before taking an

Page 13: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

picture of what you need to do next. With mind mapping, you will be able toanalyze situations that will lead to optimizing your work performance. Thus, you can use mind mapping in just about any situation in your workplace. Mind Mapping and Learning Those willing to learn as fast as possible can employ mind maps to theiradvantage. Naturally, college students are always prompted to note downsome important points of consideration especially when they are gettingready for an exam or test. Apart from the necessity to focus on daily classdiscussions, they also need to read and understand their textbooks. There arecases when students go through information overload, which makes itdifficult for them to learn. One of the hardest things to learn in a lesson involving languages is textinformation. However, mind maps have the capability to guide students incoping up with their studies as well as have better learning skills. Every individual is definitely unique. Individuals also learn differently fromeach other. One method for learning could work well for one and not for theother one. Take for example jotting down notes. This method of learning orstudying is considered a passive process. The brain does not interact with theinformation that you are jotting down. Thus, if you want to recall what youhave written, your brain should be more interactive and involved. In the current society, visual learning has become a popular trend in a numberof schools as well as universities. Based on recent surveys, students are ableto learn better when teachers and professors make use of drawings, graphics, and even cartoons in their methods of teaching. It can often be easy for visual learners to familiarize themselves with thetechniques involved in mind mapping. Learning maps are the tools used inlearning and mind mapping. On the other hand, it may be a little hard forbeginners to use learning maps although with frequent use, they can mastertheir abilities to create these maps. Learning maps are also commonly referred to as memory maps. These maps

Page 14: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

include more of drawings and graphics and less of texts. Many students whouse learning maps can recall and retain information more efficiently ascompared to those using traditional note-taking. Mind mapping for learning can often be a useful technique in improving yourlearning skills as well as habits. However, this depends on your ability orpreferences. Just like mind maps used in other areas, learning maps arecreated using a paper and colored pens/ markers. You start at the middleportion of the paper with your goal and branch out other vital informationthat you need in your lesson. Learning maps can still be created during class discussions. This can be madepossible by discerning the central idea behind your discussion and noting itdown centrally on a piece of paper. On the other hand, avoid using sentencesin your diagram. Keywords are the best to use given that you still need tobranch out and determine sub ideas of the discussion. Use lines to connect themain idea to the sub ideas until the end of your class discussion. Learning maps can also be created while reading textbooks. It can be easier tolearn from books if you are trying to visual what you are reading. You can dothis by creating learning maps.

Chapter 3: Secrets on Creating Your Own MindMaps Mind maps can often be created on a variety of platforms. Such platformsinclude a piece of paper, tablet/computer drawing application or in onlinemind mapping software tools. Beginners are advised to use a piece of paper together with colored penssince this is the best way they can best expresses their thoughts. In addition, drawing out the branches can help you recall the information in your mindmap more efficiently. Before creating a personal mind map, it is advisable to consider sevenimportant tips. These include the following:

1. Get one blank sheet of paper and turn it sideways. Startfrom its center. It is important to start your mind map in the centerto provide freedom to your brain to branch out in all directions. This would also allow your brain to express itself naturally andfreely.

2. Consider using a picture or an image at the central partof the paper to represent the main idea. Apart from helping you useyour imagination, a central image provides focus and concentration. It keeps your mind map more interesting and stimulates your brainbetter.

3. Consider coloring your mind map as much as you can.Colors have the capability to excite your brain in the same mannerimages do. They add life and vibrancy to your mind map whileproviding your brain with extra energy for creative thinking.

4. Connect the central image to your main branches using

Page 16: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

lines. You should then connect branches in the second and thirdlevel to those on the first and second level. This is critical since thebrain operates by association or in linkages. The brain likes toconnect two, three, or four ideas together. Connecting the brancheswill allow you to understand and recall things better.

5. Use curved lines instead of straight ones to connect yourbranches. This is to stimulate your brain as having straight lines canbe dull, boring and redundant.

6. Maintain only one keyword per line. Single keywordsprovide your mind map more flexibility.

7. Make use of as many relevant images as possiblethroughout

There are no standard or permanent rules that have to be followed whencoming up with a mind map. The contents of a mind map revolve aroundpersonal choice. For instance, if you want to use more than one keyword ortexts to a branch, you can do so. Create a mind map and put elements thatwould work best for you. BONUS Chapter 4: The Power Of Goal Setting

Now that you’ve covered your vision and purpose for each area of your life, it’s time to narrow in onyour specific goals. Since you’re reading this book, I’m willing to bet that this isn’t the first self-helpbook that you’ve read before. If that’s the case, nearly ALL self-help books talk about or mention goalsetting. Yet, what amazes me is that VERY FEW people actually know how to properly set goals.

On my blog, I offer life coaching. With every client that I coach, I make all of them fill out anapplication and questionnaire that explains to me what their goals are. To my amazement, about 95%of the goals that I receive back from people are horrible.

People write things to me like, “I want to make more money in my business” or “I want to lose weight”or “I want to have a relationship.” These goals are HORRIBLE. They aren’t specific, there is nodeadline, they’re not compelling, and they have no juice behind them.

Goal setting is the most important process in achieving anything that you want. It’s the first place youmust start before you even begin taking action towards something. What’s the point of taking actionand trying to achieve something, if you don’t know what that result is?

In this section, I’m going to explain to you the importance of setting goals and the step-by-step processof how I do it. Then, I’m going to guide you through that process as a “workshop” and help you set 1-year, 3-month and 1-month goals that are aligned with your vision.

First, I’m going to explain to you the power of goal setting through a study that was done at YaleUniversity. In 1953, a group of researchers had surveyed Yale’s graduating class to find out how manypeople had actually set goals. As it turns out, only 3% of the graduating class had any goals, while the97% didn’t.

While it’s staggering that very few people actually have set goals for themselves, what’s morestaggering is the follow-up study they did 20 years later. The researchers tracked down the samepeople 20 years later and discovered that the 3% of people that had goals had accumulated morepersonal wealth than the entire 97% of people COMBINED.

Isn’t that remarkable? While goal setting seems so simple, it’s more powerful than you can imagine.

Page 20: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

Allow me to share one my story, this time being my own personal experience with goal setting. As Imentioned earlier, I discovered the self-development industry when I was 17 years old. When I was 18years old, I was living with my mom in Vancouver and remember the first time that I had set goals formyself.

I had followed the principles and guidelines that I’m going to mention below and had printed out mygoals on a sheet of paper. Some of my goals at the time were to start a coaching business, to travel for3 months, to have $10,000 saved, to move out on my own, and to attract an amazing woman in my lifeand be in a relationship.

At the time, these goals were a big stretch for me. I had no idea how I would ever start a coachingbusiness one day, as I was at the time working for my dad’s business and had absolutely zeroconfidence and social skills. I remember I put down that goal because I thought that one day I wasgoing to transform myself radically and wanted to master this area of my life, so being able to coachpeople one day with a business would be a dream.

I was terrified of the thought of traveling by myself for 3 months. I had never left home or been outsideof the city of Los Angeles. I had absolutely zero money saved and was working for minimum wage, so$10,000 at the time was a very significant amount of money. Also, I had never had a girlfriendthroughout high school and had absolutely zero success with dating at the time.

These goals were lofty, but I had blind faith and would read my goals out 3 times per day on my printedform. I had read a book at the time titled, It Works: The Famous Little Red Book That Makes yourDreams Come True! I highly recommend the book, as it costs only about $3 and can be read in lessthan an hour, but the information in the book is life-changing. The book was written in 1926 by ananonymous author who was “highly successful and widely known for his generosity and helpful spirit.”

In the book It Works, it states that there are Three Positive Rules For Accomplishment. It instructs youthat you must print out your goals on a sheet of paper and follow these rules:

1. Read the list of what you want three times each day: morning, noon and night.

2. Think of what you want as often as possible. Anytime you feel frustrated, depressed, sad, upset, etc...all you must do is to take out your list and read your goals out loud, focusing on what you want.

3. Do not talk to any one about your plan except to the Great Power within you which will unfold yourObjective Mind the method of accomplishment. It says you must memorize these three simple rules andread the book over and over again. And that’s exactly what I did.

Page 21: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

It wasn’t until three years later that I had noticed the fruits of my labour. I was 21 years old and wasmoving at the time. While I was packing, I was going through some stuff and found my printed goalsheet from when I was 18 years old. As I read the goals, I was amazed to see that every one of thosegoals had come true in my life.

I had transformed my confidence and social skills, quit my job and was running a coaching business, putting on seminars and programs to help people makes changes in their lives. I had travelled to andlived in Europa for 3 months. I saved over $10,000. I was living on my own, and had also attracted anamazing girl that I was in a relationship with.

I was blown away by this. Everything that I had written down had come true within only a few yearslater. It got me thinking “What if I wrote down bigger goals when I was 18, would I have achievedthose too?”

Ever since then, I’ve always set goals for myself and my life. And guess what? I’ve always achievedmy goals. Every time I’d achieve something, I’d set new goals. Sometimes the goals wouldn’t happenwhen I expected or wanted, but over a period of time I achieved everything I set for myself. Today Ihave lofty goals and a huge vision. I have no doubts that I will achieve what I have set for myself as Ihave in the past. Again, it may not happen when I want it to, some of my goals might show up a fewyears later, but they WILL come to fruition.

It’s important to understand that EVERYTHING that you have in your life right now is something thatyou have created. You focused on it over a period of time and have manifested it. This includes thethings in your life that you don’t like or want. You may have debt, you may have a lousy job, or ahorrible relationship.

You must come to the understanding that YOU attracted, manifested and created these things in yourlife and take responsibility for it. The moment you take responsibility for what you have created, youcan immediately begin to create what you want for your life.

All of the results I have currently in my life, including a six figure income, financial freedom, a healthyand fit body, having travelled the world, and an amazing relationship are all results that I haveCREATED through setting goals.

I hope this section really inspired you and has you hyped up on the power of setting goals. In the nextsection, I’m going to begin to explain the goal setting process that I follow that has helped me toachieve everything I’ve ever wanted.

Page 22: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

BONUS Chapter 5: The S.M.A.R.T. Philosophy

A common guideline when it comes to goal setting is called the S.M.A.R.T. philosophy, which is anacronym that stands for:

Specific

Your goal must be specific. The more specific, the more likely you are to achieve it. Clarity is power. If you write down, “I want to make more money”, the problem is that it doesn’t clarify how muchmoney. The same goes with, “I want to lose weight.” How much weight? What percent body fat doyou want to be? How do you want to look and feel? Again, the more details your goal includes, thebetter.

Measurable

Your goal must be something that you can measure regularly. This is a problem that most people havewith setting goals. Most people set their new year resolutions, but never check in with them again. They don’t have a way of measuring them consistently to see whether or not they’re making progressor on track to achieving it. I personally check in with my goals and measure where I’m at weekly so Ican evaluate myself and whether what I’m doing is working or not. This is another reason why yourgoals need to be specific. You can’t measure “I want to lose weight”, but you can measure “I want tolose 10 pounds.”

Attainable

Your goal must be attainable. When you set the timeframe for your goal, it must be something that isrealistic, which is mentioned below. If you set a goal that is impossible to attain, then you are settingyourself up for failure.

Realistic

Along with being attainable, your goal also must be realistic. I see people all the time setting goalslike, “I want to make a million dollars by next month!” I used to set goals like that, as there’s a fewbooks out there that say you need to think bigger. While I agree with thinking big, sometimes toounrealistic can have damaging affects. For example, when you set a goal that is too unrealistic, whathappens is you don’t believe it can happen. If you don’t believe you can achieve your goal, then you’renot going to take any action to achieve it because you believe it’s impossible! To make matters

Page 23: The Ultimate Guide to Mind Mapping

worse, when you don’t achieve that million dollars in a month, you feel bad, beat yourself up, feel likea failure and then lose your confidence to set goals in the future.

Instead, I always set realistic and attainable goals. This is how I did it with my internet businesses. When I was making $30/month, I set the goal of making only $100 the next month. Once I achievedthat, I would feel good, proud about myself, celebrate, and then set the next goal at $300/month. Atthis point, I already have confidence and momentum because I had achieved the previous goal that Iset. Once I achieved $300/month, I set the goal of $500/month. Then $1000/month. $2000/month. Eventually to $5000/month, $8200/month, $10,000/month, $12,000/month, and so fourth.

I simply slowly increased the amount of earnings I wanted to make over a period of time and gainedtremendous confidence and momentum while doing it!

Timeline

Last, but not least, you need a timeline. There’s a lot of benefit and power in having a timeline for yourgoal. A timeline is what gets you to actually complete the goal. If you don’t have a timeline and thetime for completion is open-ended, then who’s to say you will ever achieve it?

You want to create PRESSURE on yourself. As the saying goes, “Pressure creates diamonds.”

Think about when you were going to school. In school, they teach you the power of having a timelineor deadline. The teachers assign homework and projects for you that you must complete by a certaindue date. Since the teacher assigns a date, you will ALWAYS get the homework or project done, asthere is a consequence to not completing it. If there was no due date, you most likely wouldn’t get itdone. You may even have left your homework or studying to the last minute, as I always did, butyou’d ALWAYS get it done, even if it meant staying up all night to complete it.

This S.M.A.R.T. philosophy has proven to be useful for me when setting my goals and achievingthem. As mentioned, most people when they send me their goals are lacking these simple steps thatmake all the difference.
