Gender Studies invites KHS students to consider the following courses. GNDS 321/3.0 Gendering Opportunities: Women’s Work Mondays 8:30-10:00am and Thursdays 10:00-11:30am with Dr. Melissa Houghtaling

In what ways is work gendered? How does gender shape the work we do – and how we do it? What kinds of work are considered “real” work, and which are not – and why? What can be said about all the recent sexual harassment claims in the news spanning a variety of workplaces? This course offers an interdisciplinary framework of feminist thinking on women, work, and employment opportunities. It takes a comparative look at socio-political feminist theories on work and employment in different social and cultural contexts and utilizes feminist political economy, anti-racist, and intersectional approaches. Students will explore ideas related to the sexual division of labour; gender, class, and wage inequalities; sexual harassment; precarious employment; labour movements and union organizing; and neoliberal influences on contemporary organizations of work. The course focuses on a wide range of work/ers and occupations including manual labor and the trades, service work, professional/white-collar work, science and technology, the education sector, migrant and immigrant workers, sex work, government and politics, and unpaid work. Class will take place in the new active learning classroom in Mackintosh-Corry Hall! Prerequisite: Level 3 GNDS 380/3.0 Special Topics: Trauma and Resilience Tuesdays 11:30am to 2:30pm with Lorinda Peterson

Guided by feminist, queer, anti-racist, and decolonial theoretical frameworks, this course explores the impacts of intergenerational trauma in Western contexts, with particular attention to pop cultural representations of trauma memory. Each week we will look at theoretical writings and excerpts to develop a vocabulary for discussing key concepts. We will explore the effects of both historic (world events) and quotidian (every day) trauma on individuals and communities, applying learned concepts to close readings of theoretical texts, critical assessments, visual art, film, literature, and media, both main stream and social including blogs. We will pay particular attention to the roles resilience and resistance play toward restoring identity. Prerequisite: Level 3 For more information on these courses please see our Course Outlines page.

Are you a post-secondary (PhD, Masters or Undergraduate) student who is passionate about food systems and decolonization? Are you committed to respectful dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth across Turtle Island? Join Meal Exchange as a Decolonizing the Book Club facilitator for the next year to help shape the future of the Book Club and related events. We are looking for volunteers who can commit between 2-5 hours per month between February and December 2018. Successful applicants are invited to an all-expenses paid trip to Vancouver Island, February 9-11th for a training retreat. Applications are due January 15th. Please submit applications to [email protected]. For all details, please take a look at the call-out here.

In conjunction with the Department of Human Biology at the University of Toronto, the Neuroscience Association for Undergraduate Students (NAUS) is hosting the eighth annual Canadian University Life Sciences Challenge (CULSC), to be held at the U of T St. George campus on the weekend of February 16th - 18th. This challenge is modelled after competitions like CBC's Reach for the Top and Jeopardy. We would like to invite teams of undergraduate students from universities across Canada for this event, including yours, and are therefore requesting your assistance in advertising to your students. We have attached a poster and the information below for you to forward to your students: Teams of up to 4 undergraduate students can register for this competition on our website (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/canadian-undergraduate-life-sciences-competition-culsc-2018-tickets-41440875775?aff=efbeventtix ), and all universities are welcome to send as many teams as possible. The online registration deadline is *Monday February 12 @ 11:59 pm*. The competition itself will be composed of multiple knowledge and problem-solving based questions derived from the fields of: (1) Neuroscience and Psychology (2) Molecular Biology and Genetics (3) Physiology and Pathobiology (4) Anatomy (5) Immunology, and Microbiology (6) Biochemistry and Pharmacology. Question difficulties will vary based on the expected knowledge of first, second, third, and fourth year undergraduate students. Teams must register in advance for this event, for only $15/participant. This reserves your spot in the competition, gives you access to social events Friday and Saturday evening, and includes two days of breakfast and two days of lunch. There will also be free time for the competitors to sight-see and enjoy downtown Toronto as they please. For those that require accommodation, we have some options listed on our website, as well as the highly recommended locations listed here: https://www.studentlife.utoronto.ca/hs/temporary This competition is a chance to both break out your science know-how in a forum outside of the classroom and for all participants to get to know one another! You can find out more about this event on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/151991868781689/?active_tab=about and website: https://nausuoft.wordpress.com/ . African Caribbean Students’ Association (ACSA)

January 9, 2018 Hello there! My name is Dainelle Barham and I am the Outreach Coordinator for Project Afro-Odyssey which is this year’s Culture Show being hosted by the African Caribbean Students’ Association. We are looking for brilliant individuals and groups to showcase their talents and share aspects of their cultures for our event being held on March 17th at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. The theme for this year has strong futuristic aspects that blend seamlessly with ideas about African culture, fashion, and expression. We would love for you to share your spoken word poems, dances, songs, traditional clothing, instrumentals, skits, and any other activities you have in mind. Your participation helps to illustrate the diversity on our campus, in addition to providing an opportunity for others to learn about different ways of life. Culture Show attendees may even reach out to you in the future to become a part of your group or to coordinate events such as this. Proceeds from Project Afro-Odyssey ticket sales will be given to The Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy (OAHAS), our official sponsored charity. Founded in 1995, OAHAS has dedicated itself to providing programs and strategies to respond to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic among Aboriginal people in Ontario through long-term care and treatment and support initiatives. Project Afro-Odyssey is one of ACSA’s many initiatives and events, which include our dance team, Soul Food Sundays, and organizing Black History Month events. ACSA is an on-campus club that facilitates discussions and activities surrounding the various cultures, art, music, histories and other aspects of African and Caribbean societies. On behalf of ACSA and myself, it would be an absolute pleasure for you to join us! Auditions will be held on January 13th in Room 351 in the JDUC. Please feel free to contact me through the email or at the number given below for further information. Sincerely,

Dainelle Barham [email protected] Outreach Coordinator Culture Show 2018: Project Afro-Odyssey
