Brothers and Sisters,We at the Hall hope our members at Unit 1 were

able to enjoy their me off during Cat’s Summer shutdown. Those who were working, hopefully you will be taking a vaca on soon. To our members at Units 2 and 4 we hope you were able to get some me off for a vaca on or maybe some me soon.

The Recrea on Commi ee has set the date for the Family Picnic to be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014. The picnic will start at noon and go ll 5 p.m.. There will be food and refreshments for everyone. There will be a couple of moon jumps for the kids and a bags tournament for anyone wishing to sign up for that day. The Recrea on Commi ee will be doing a raffl e

to help raise funds to cover the cost of the picnic as well. The raffl e will have a grand prize of a $500.00 Wisconsin Dells gi card that can be used at most any lodging or a rac on at the Dells. Second prize will be a $150. gi card for Bass Pro Shops. Third place will be a $100. Visa gi card and fourth and fi h places will be $50. Visa gi cards. The raffl e ckets are $5. each or fi ve for $20. and only 500 ckets will be sold. So please see a Rec. Commi ee member or stop by the Hall to purchase your ckets and don’t forget to come to the picnic with your family and have fun and solidarity with your brothers and sisters.

I am sure you know that the congressional elec ons will be in November and I’m sure you’ve already seen some commercials for many candidates. I urge you to get registered to vote, if you are not yet registered. Here in Illinois you can register to vote online. It is your duty as an American ci zen to vote and it is an obliga on as a UAW member. Most importantly I urge

“This na on will be judged by the way it treats it elderly ci zens.” Walter Reuther

you to get educated on the state and federal districts you will be vo ng in and the candidates you wish to vote for. We do have a list here at the Hall if you wish to see who is being endorsed by Region 4 for Illinois voters. I do ask that you remember we are Trade Unionists which mean that we endorse candidates who are for working families and the middle class. Please vote for the candidates who will support the working class families and help raise us all up to a be er standard of living. We some mes get too wrapped up in our own individual personal beliefs and forget about issues that aff ect us all. So you owe it to yourself, your family and your fellow members to get informed on the issues that will have an impact on our lives and how we support our families and communi es. This is the least that you could do to be poli cally ac ve which will have the largest aff ect on our lives.

Local 2096President’s ReportRob Drysdale, President UAW Local 2096

We had our monthly mee ng Sunday, July 13. We had a nice turn out and con nue to see a growing interest from the membership. I would like to see more and more involvement as we move forward. If you’ve never been to a mee ng, or you haven’t been to one in a while, I invite you to come and check things out and get involved.

The local union has the following standing commi ees: Cons tu on and Bylaws, Union Label, Educa on, Conserva on and Recrea on, Community Services, Civil and Human Rights, Ci zenship and Legisla ve, Consumer Aff airs, Veterans, and a Local Women’s Commi ee. At our E-board mee ng we assigned a diff erent commi ee to each E-board member. So if you want to par cipate on any of these commi ees or have any ideas for them, catch one of us or come to a mee ng and let us know. These commi ees and monthly mee ngs are for all UAW members to be par cipants.

Involvement by our members is what makes our local stronger and more unified. It creates solidarity. If you see an upcoming event that you would like to participate in join in and be part of it, any part you play in any event would be greatly appreciated. It makes the events that much more successful and allows for everyone to get to know each other. Along the lines of participation, I would like to thank Mark Hable and Sean Shelton for the work they put into getting the veterans traveling wall for our upcoming event, and thanks to Jerome Belter for the great job he does with the landscaping and the outside maintenance of our hall.

We all have heard in the news of late the Department of Veterans’ Aff airs have been dealing with some issues with mely scheduling and proper processing of veterans’ issues. We all know that all of our veterans deserve prompt and proper care in dealing with their issues, which are uncommon to the average ci zen. I know that there has been a major shakeup at the na onal level and that president Barack Obama is calling for speedy correc on of the problems and has assigned new leadership to fi nd and fi x the ongoing problems. I feel the DVA is a very good na onal service, which is much deserved and needed by our na on’s veterans, and feel assured the issues will be resolved.

I personally use the DVA services, as well as my

father and my father -in –law. My father has dealt with some life-threa ng problems which the DVA has provided the much needed medical services, with very posi ve outcomes. My father-in-law and I received services from the Peoria clinic, and my father from the Danville clinic and hospital. I have found the staff s at both clinics to be very friendly and helpful and all medical problems have been dealt with in a mely manner.

I would encourage each and every veteran to get signed up with the DVA. Each person who is registered in the DVA system is funded, and even if you do not feel you will use the services at this me or will only be using them a few mes a year

the fact that you are registered will provide funding

resources for those veterans who do need extra service. Let us not leave any veteran behind; all who need service should get service. If we make sure the DVA is receiving enough funds then everyone needing service will receive service.

Since the last Monday in June the Hines Mobile Clinic has been stopping in Pon ac on the last Monday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2pm at the parking lot of the Veterans’ Assistance Commission. You can get signed up at the Mobile Clinic, but you will be required to get a photo for your DVA ID. You will be required to go to one of Hines Permanent Centers to get your photo. You can do this at your convenience.

Veterans Affairs services starts with being signed up

In 1975 the United States Supreme Court, in the case of NLRB v. J. Weingarten, Inc., 420 U.S.251 (1975), upheld a Na onal Labor Rela ons Board (NLRB) decision that employees have a right to union representa on at inves gatory interviews. These rights have become known as the Weingarten Rights.

During an inves gatory interview, the Supreme Court ruled that the

following rules apply:Rule 1: The employee must make a

clear request for union representa on before or during the interview. The employee cannot be punished for making this request.

Rule 2: A er the employee makes the request, the employer must choose from among three op ons:

• Grant the request and delay ques oning un l the union

representa ve arrives and (prior to the interview con nuing) the representa ve has a chance to consult privately with the employee;

• Deny the request and end the interview immediately; or

• Give the employee a clear choice between having the interview without representa on, or ending the interview.

Rule 3: If the employer denies the

request for union representa on, and con nues to ask ques ons, it commits an unfair labor prac ce and the employee has a right to refuse to answer. The employer may not discipline the employee for such a refusal.

Why do I need representa on when I am called to a mee ng with

Weingarten rights allow representation in meetings

Local 145 Reinstatement Fee

No ceIt is each and every member’s obliga on

to update the union hall with any address change or change of status, for example: Leave of absence, medical leave, and/or layoff . It is your obliga on to make sure your union dues are paid each month in which you work at least 40 hours. The Company is supposed to deduct them from your check on the fi rst payday of each month but far too o en there is an error because of the previously men oned status changes. Unpaid union dues take away your member in good standing status and put you in an unfavorable posi on so that it could cost you addi onal fees and

even your job.The UAW Cons tu on requires

all members to pay their dues during the month they are owed and to pay a reinstatement fee of $40.00 if they become delinquent on their dues. If you are not sure if you owe dues because of a status change or if you have received a le er from the local and you feel an error has been made, please call the union hall at (630) 896-9370 before you become delinquent. Most cases can be resolved with a phone call. If you do not contact us, we have no choice but to consider you delinquent.

Richard Radke, Financial secretary

Address ChangesThe Interna onal Union UAW has giv-

en each UAW local the responsibility of keeping complete and accurate address/phone number informa on for each of its members. If you have moved or have changed any of your informa on, please contact the union hall. You can send in a note, call 630-896-9370 or email us at [email protected].

The local doesn’t send out many things but, if we need to contact you regarding a grievance or send you a check for dues overpayment, having your correct ad-dress is extremely important.

Now that we are prin ng and mailing “The UAW Voice” we must have your cur-rent address. The post offi ce charges us for each returned newspaper and this can get quite costly.

Please remember that if you change your contact informa on with the Com-pany, you also need to change it at the union hall.

Richard Radke, Financial secretary

Vaca on checks areready for pick-up

Local 145 issued vaca on checks on June 3, 2014 for Unit 1 members employed at Caterpillar. If you were called out on union business during 2013 and the local paid you for lost me, you may have a check wai ng for you.

It’s important that you pick up your check and cash it in a mely manner. Checks are clearly marked “Void 60 days from issue date” so please stop in, sign your voucher and pick your check up soon. Checks were available at the June 22 Membership Mee ng; they will not be mailed.

Richard Radke, Financial secretary

Layoff DuesWhile on layoff it may be necessary for

you to pay monthly union dues equal to one

hour’s pay. The simple explana on for this is that if you have three or more year’s senior-ity from the date of your layoff , receive the $100 layoff payment from Caterpillar, and get unemployment pay, you owe layoff dues for each month of your layoff .

Le ers have been sent out according to the informa on we have received from the Company but it’s almost a member-by-member calcula on based on if and when you were recalled. Caterpillar will not deduct these dues so you will need to pay them at the union hall. Please take your responsibil-ity as a union member seriously and make the eff ort to pay your dues.

We understand that union dues are not exactly a top priority when you’re struggling through these tough mes, but as a union member you remain obligated to comply with the union security clause of the UAW-Caterpillar Agreement and it is a condi on of your employment to be sure your monthly dues payments are made.

If you feel that you received a le er in error or we have made a mistake, please contact the union hall and we will help you fi gure it out.

If you agree with the amount owed, you can send a check or money order or pay in person, whichever is more convenient for you. Remember, we do not accept plas c.

Richard Radke, Financial secretary

New caps have arrived;T-shirts available

The new caps have arrived! For all the members that are now required to wear the “bump caps”, you can now place the plas c shell inside a UAW Local 145 cap. The caps are black with a so er mesh back and will sell for only $10.00 each. Be sure to get yours before they’re all gone.

AMERICAN/ UNION MADE PARKING ONLY

Brothers and Sisters,The Local 145 membership would like to encourage

you to purchase American/Union made vehicles when you go to purchase your next vehicle. They voted to purchase signage and create a special area for those that choose not to buy American/Union made vehicles. The new spot will be in the back corner of the parking lot. However if you drive an American/ Union made vehicle feel free to park anywhere you wish. To fi nd out if your vehicle is American/Union made just look at your vin number. If it starts with a 1,2,4, or 5 park anywhere you want. Any other number must park in the back corner of the parking lot by the ball fi eld.

Weingarten Rights

Workers normally use the following language to assert their Weingarten Rights:If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated, or affect my personal working conditions, I respectfully request that my union representative, offi cer, or steward be present at the meeting. Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.

management, most members fi rst response when they realize they are being disciplined is anger. Having your union representa ve present can help control the situa on. They can take appropriate ac ons to insure that you stay calm and the member doesn’t say or do something that will make a situa on worse and result in more severe discipline. They can also be a witness to what is said by management as well as the member. Without a witness it comes down to the member’s word against management and the company is going to take the side of management. Having your representa ve present also gives them an opportunity to collect the facts. Having the facts will help your case come to a quicker resolu on.

Once you have received any type of discipline if there is not a grievance fi led in essence you are saying I agree with the discipline, it was deserved and the next me you do something wrong you will get the next step in discipline. Because no grievance was fi led once you receive the next step your union representa ve cannot go back and say that the previous discipline wasn’t deserved. By fi ling a grievance you now give your union representa ve an opportunity to inves gate the grievance and gather all the facts so an informed decision can be

made.Fight the Real EnemyWhen we fi ght among ourselves i.e. going to

management to complain about our brothers and sisters it takes the focus off of the real adversary, the company. We have a huge fi ght ahead of us and throwing our brothers and sisters under the

bus plays right into the company’s hands. As good union members we should look out for our brothers and sisters and try to help them rather than run to management and complain. If you have problems with a fellow union member and can’t talk to them you can have your union representa ve have a conversa on with them.
