Your committee has been busy setting up the new web site and members are encouraged to check it out! We would appreciate your feedback and suggestions on how it could be improved. The Class Leaders’ working brunch in Term 3 was constructive and help-ful. There was a favorable response to our plans of putting the U3A Her-ald online. Members will also be able to download application forms. Those members who do not have access to a computer will still get a hard copy, on request. Producing the U3A Herald electronically will result in a greatly reduced costs of photocopying and postage, and halt the deterioration of our bank balance. As discussed at the brunch, our Christmas Party at the end of Term 4 will have complimentary meal vouchers for class leaders. Attendance at all other functions will attract a modest cost to all members. I must repeat my gratitude to all committee members who have worked together to resolve issues as they arise, often in my absence while I was undergoing eye surgery in Sydney. I can’t wait to see them again with my improved sight. I hope all members have an enjoyable Term 4. Please note our NEW website address: http://www.kempseymacleayu3a.com.au
Richard Mackay, President
NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
A Special General Meeting of Kempsey Macleay U3A Inc. will be held on Tuesday 25th November 2014, 7.30pm at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club.
Agenda: To ratify the amended Constitution in accordance with the lat-est legislation.
View both current and proposed constitutions online www.kempseymacleayu3a.com.au or on display at 46A Tozer Street from early November 2014.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
COURSE CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT Welcome to all for the final term of 2014. May everyone
enjoy the learning and other experiences of KMVU3A. This term there are a number of new courses. ‘Gardening’ is being offered by Mary Sweeney for anyone keen to learn more about successfully grow-ing plants in this area. To improve your digital skills David Chamberlain is doing a 2 week course, ‘Tablets without Tears’, so that you can get the best out of the various functions on your generic tablet—or iPad. Do you want to de-stress with a massage before Christmas? If so Leonie Gardner is taking a 2 week class on ‘Introduction to Massage’. This new course will suit a number of people because it is in the last 2 weeks of term and at 6pm to 8 pm on a Thursday.
Up at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club Phil Baker is taking outdoor ‘Lawn Bowls’. For this activity he will be providing the bowls and the handy hints necessary to get the best out of your bowling actions. This will be ideal for anyone who has been thinking of taking up lawn bowls.
Then with many thanks to Macleay Valley House Richard Blomfield is studying T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Four Quartets’. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Eliot’s poetry. Also, with MV House as its new venue, is the ever popular ‘Buddhist Meditation’ with Viryadana. Meditation is a chance to stop the busy whirl of our daily lives and develop quiet awareness. With the coming of warmer weather Margaret Jopling’s ‘Swimming at Kempsey Pool’ is running each morning Mon—Fri in the last 3 weeks of term. Check the dates for swimming in the timetable of this Herald. Finally, the following courses are resting: ‘Fun with Threads’, Let’s Visit Turkey’ and ‘Singing for Pleasure’. Thanks to these leaders who have made their classes successful for participants. Have a most enjoyable term Judy Nisbet Course Coordinator KMVU3A NB. Note to all Class Leaders. Would you please return your leaders bags and contents at the end of Term 4. They can either be taken to the Christmas lunch, dropped in at the Tozer Street hall or given to one of the committee members. We also need Class Leaders’ folders and sign-in sheets for Term 3 on Enrolment Day.
KMVU3A COURSE FEES Most course fees are $5 per course per term (usually 8 wks). Some have charges for materials and de-tails of these extra costs can be found in our Newsletter. Fees are due for payment at the beginning of each term, either on enrolment day or by mail or direct bank transfer prior to this date. Instead of using cash, why not buy some of our $5 vouchers, which can be mailed with safety. Direct bank transfer can be made to the following account: BSB: 704-189 (Coastline Credit Union) Account No.: 8731 Account Name: Kempsey Macleay Valley U3A (or KMVU3A) If you choose to use this method for your payment, please ensure that you note your family name & at least one initial (if possible- we know that sometimes the reference field is limited). Please remember that it is essential that you fill out the enrolment form, noting all courses in which you wish to participate, together with the total of your payment and method of payment. We must have this information to ensure that we have adequate facilities for each course.

TABLETS WITHOUT TEARS
Want to know more about your generic computer tablet or iPad. Bring it along and learn how to connect to the internet and be a successful “tableteer”.
SWIMMING Swimming will be on again at the end of this term with 15 sessions over three weeks. The class caters for everyone from absolute beginners to those who wish to improve their technique, learn new strokes, diving, etc. Pool entry is $4 per session (books of entry tickets are available at a discount price). Great fun and great exercise for everyone. The pool is heated!
GARDENING Mary Sweeney “I love sharing my love of nature, gardening and the great outdoors with like-minded people, whether it's propagating, growing vegies and flowers, in fact anything to do with gardening and scratching around in the earth. If you would like to come along and SHARE your gardening interests with other like-minded people in a relaxed, informal and friendly atmosphere you will be most welcome to join us. I will have a questionnaire on registration day in order to gain people’s interests and pinpoint their specialities i.e. growing orchids, bromeli-ads, vegies, flowers, fruit trees etc. Maybe we could start a yearly growing calendar for the local area i.e. something like 'when to plant', 'where to plant' 'best growing conditions for which plant' 'how and when to harvest' 'when to feed' etc.”
T.S. ELIOTT: THE FOUR QUARTETS In 1948 T.S. Eliot was awarded the Noble Prize for literature for what was regarded as one of the most significant poems of the Twentieth Century. We will be looking at the lyricism of the poem as well as issues he raises concern-ing the meaning of history and the nature of spirituality.
OUTDOOR LAWN BOWLS @ THE HEIGHTS Coaching, bowls and water will be provided for all players who will also have access to all Club facilities. Bowlers are required to become So-cial Members of Kempsey Heights Bowling Club. Social Membership is $12.00.
Introductory Massage for Health Are you interested in the power of touch, the many health benefits of massage, and how to help relieve tension and stress, headaches, and minor aches and pains for friends and family?

COURSES FOR TERM 4
BAKE & TASTE
Elaine will be demonstrating some more of her great home cooking. Then you get to eat it. Meals that she will be cooking are chicken curry with rice, a vegetable pasta as well as a couple of desserts. Elaine is happy for participants to suggest a sweet to make. NB: Ingredients cost of $10 per Saturday and is payable to Elaine on Enrolment Day .
BRIDGE Team Leader Margaret has been playing bridge for about 30 years , loves it and wants to teach others to play. She has never played at a club and has no wish to do so. Margaret is purely a social player. If you would like to learn Bridge in a non threatening way she’d love to teach you. I'm happy to take learners this term and wel-come others that may have played already.
BUDDHIST MEDITATION Viryadana is an experienced meditator and
member of the Triratna Buddhist Order. Meditation is a chance to stop the busy whirl of our daily lives and develop quiet aware-ness. Suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators. In this 6 week course we will be doing two traditional Buddhist practices: one based on the breath and the other on devel-oping positive mental states. A cushion to support your back while sitting on a chair could be helpful. If you prefer to sit on the floor, bring a yoga mat.
BALANCE ‘N’ BONES
This is an exercise program on DVD, designed for mature aged participants at all levels of fit-ness. It is a fun, easy workout aimed to increase flexibility, balance, co-ordination and bone strength. The program is designed for U3A groups and includes warm up conditioning, bal-ancing, stretch, cool down & relaxation to wind down. It can be accomplished in 45-50 minutes, the recommended weekly workout for a U3A class.
CARDS, PEGS & TILES
Come along for a relaxing Monday after-noon where we enjoy playing card games & the occasion games of Rummy King. This term we shall have the pleasure of playing Cribbage and Samba, games that are both enjoyable and yet totally different from each other. Beginners are always very welcome to join this group.
INTRO TO COMPUTERS This course will give everyone the chance to make friends with their computer. If numbers are greater than 5, an overflow class will start at 11.15 am Wednesdays 10am – 11am
CANOEING Canoeing will continue in Term 4 as an ideal pas-time for mature people to enjoy the beautiful Macleay River in good company as well as get a dose of low-impact exercise. Whilst it is a good idea to check with your doc-tor before undertaking canoeing (you can be over an hour away from medical help) the hard-est part of the exercise is loading your canoe onto your car. Once on the water in a canoe you enter a whole new world where even we 'mature' people can enjoy the magic. Some participants are re-discovering canoeing from earlier in their lives, some have never pad-dled before. It is not difficult to gain full control of your boat, but it does take time to get the darned thing to go straight until all of a sudden you are doing it automatically. What do you need? Well, a canoe, a buoyancy vest and paddle or paddles (depending on the canoe). Unfortunately, there is no perfect boat for all purposes, so it is best to try before you buy and get good advice before purchasing.
Don’t forget your name badge.

COURSES FOR TERM 4 FUN & GAMES
You've heard the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." That neatly sums up the feeling about the mix of activities at Fun and Games, we like a little va-riety so each week we choose from card games such as Samba, Skipo, Black Lady Hearts and Phase Ten, with the odd excursion into Dominos and Rummykub If anyone likes to bring along something different we'll have a go at that too, the only criteria to be met is we play games and we have a lot of fun. You can join us at the RSL Club from l.30pm to 4.00pm. FUN WITH THREADS is resting this Term. We are taking part in the Days for Girls program by making hygiene packs for girls in under- developed countries. For more information email [email protected] or visit the website: daysforgirls.org.

MAHJONG
Mahjong is held on Tuesday in South West Rocks, Wednesday & Friday in Kempsey. Due to its popu-larity class numbers are limited. See Course time-table for individual group limits.
MAHJONG— SOUTH WEST ROCKS
Now in its 5th year, Mahjong has become very popular at South West Rocks. Players have devel-oped skills in the Western & Chinese games, variations on the game & more recently we have had an introduction to the American version. This year new players will be most welcome & they can progress in their own time in learning this wonderful tile game. Our class limit will be 20 players including all lev-els of knowledge. Fun, friendship and entertain-ment are in store for all. Why not try something new? Come along and learn all about it.
WEDNESDAY MAHJONG This ancient Chinese tile game continues into its 11th year as a KMVU3A course. Over those years many wonderful friendships have formed and there is great caring, tolerance & acceptance in our members. As we grow 'a little less young' it is important wherever possible to stay active both physically and in the field of learning. Mahjong is a wonderful fun way to exercise the brain and meet new friends. The game may seem compli-cated at first, but beginners remain with a tutor until they feel confident to play with more experi-enced players. If you have ever felt it is a game you would one day like to learn why not make term 4, 2014 your starting date?
MAHJONG WITH A TWIST Players changing game plan weekly, from Brain Drain to American version then also Western ver-sion, has given the brain a challenge with the proc-ess of changing gears.
It's an interesting and fun morning, and you don't have brain room to remember the hiccups of your morning. We all get a well earned cuppa and biscuit at 10.30am. Bring your own mug.
POSITION VACANT : Team Leader Kerry Crocker
will be taking a break in 2015 so there is a full term to consider who will fill this spot for next year.
N.B. Term 4, 2014 will continue as usual.
MACLEAY MEANDERS Ian Windsor
There are varying levels of fitness in the group that we cater for. An extension is planned, depending on the walk, for fitter walkers. Less fit walkers are not expected to exceed their fitness level and are appropriately advised before attempting the walk extensions. Provision is always made for any walker at any time who needs to rest or drop out. Only in-dividuals can know their own fitness level and capa-bility. We assume that our members have sufficient cognition to match their capability with the task ahead. If you don't have it, don't attempt it. We email a little newsletter to members on the Tuesday evening prior to the Friday morning walk. A walk description is given along with any special requirements including assembly points. The walks are graded by length and difficulty as follows Length <4 km <8 km >8 km SHORT - MEDIUM—LONG Degree of Difficulty : EASY /MODERATE /CHALLENGING We travel to our walk start point by car-pooling. Some members prefer to take their own car instead of joining the car pool. Other members prefer not to volunteer their car but get a ride in the car pool. Car-pooling only works if members follow the "It's a fair thing" principle. You may only need to take your car twice a term. I encourage all non volunteers to help share the costs incurred by giving your driver $5.00 during or after the walk. We are planning longer walks for fitter walkers dur-ing Term 4. These will be on a Saturday or during the term breaks. Those attending are encouraged to share all trans-port costs. Marg Jopling and I do our best to provide safe and enjoyable walks every week. Please discuss any questions you may have about our walks on enrolment day. Suggestions for walks are always welcome.

(Bowling Club) provides equipment, volunteers and qualified coaching to assist in development of your technique for defence and attack. Matches of singles and doubles are played. So, why play? Here are a few reasons: It's gentle on your body yet you get a good workout and it is a life long sport - it is never too late to start. It doesn't matter if you are big or small, young or old; a great sport for families. There are health benefits - good for improving mobil-ity and sharpening reflexes ". There is plenty of think-ing, planning and strategy development - keeps you mentally “sharp". It's fun, easy to play, yet difficult to master. You will always have another challenge ahead of you. Try a Google search for: Senior's Table Tennis-Shaw Tv Nanaimo (You Tube 2mins 29 sees) FRIDAY AFTERNOON TABLE TENNIS GROUP This is a small group who like their table tennis to be very social & provide lots of laughs. Starting and finishing times are very flexible. PCYC is a great venue and all equipment is provided.

COURSES FOR TERM 4
U3A MEANDER
Went meandering at beautiful Smokey Cape With the group from U3A "Is this a beach or bush walk?" I asked "It's coastal" I heard someone say Started as a gradual climb Plenty of flora to be seen Grass trees looking splendid, with tufts of emerald green Dramatic trees with holey stumps Where creepy crawlies would no doubt be "Are we there yet" "No, keep walking there's plenty more to see” A sign-posted junction gave a choice Stagger back the way you came Or climb down to the beach REJOICE!! Temptation be thy name Thought I'd rather turn around Then I changed my mind. You dill!!! Rejoined the merry meanderers Down a steep and rocky hill Finally made it to the bottom Met the leaders turning back! No safe way to make it to the beach So we re-climbed that mongrel track The climb seemed almost endless Very little shade was found With encouragement from the troops I soldiered on, now homeward bound From the junction on the downward track I made it, puffed and weary Knowing I'm no mountain goat It was my last meander, Dearie

FRIENDS WE HAVE KNOWN
VALE BRYAN EMERY: 1.1.1929 - 19.7.2014 The large number of U3A members who attended Bryan’s funeral was an indication of the respect in which he was held in the organisation and the wider community. Bryan joined Kempsey Macleay Valley U3A at its very first enrolment day and remained a very active member from that date. He was class leader for several courses teaching owners how to make the best use of their sewing machines. He attended many classes ranging from Mixed Gym (his favourite) through Singing, Movies, Literature and History to Maths, Electronics, Astronomy and Computers. He and his wife, Mary, attended almost all our end of term functions, bus trips and other social events. He will be sadly missed. Our sympathy is extended to Mary, Bryan’s daughters and his extended family. Margaret Jopling
VALE JOY SMITH: 1.10. 1930 - 21.6.2014 Joy was born on 1st October 1930 and died on 21 June 2014, aged 83. Joy raised 10 children and spent many years in Kempsey. She attended U3A courses and really en-joyed the participation. I met her through Kempsey Scrabble Club in 2009 and from then on we became great friends. Joy had a great sense of humour and was a kind, generous, warm and loving person. Joy is sadly missed. Margaret Harris-Walker
THE U3A HERALD ANNOUNCEMENTS E—NEWSLETTER
Those of you who received this Newsletter via Australia Post & who have an Email address could assist the committee in its endeavours to reduce costs by informing it of your Email address and receiving your copy of the Newsletter via the internet. The cost of mailing out the Newsletter via Australia Post is in excess of $1.30 each time. With over 300 members and 5 Newsletters per year, the overall cost is in excess of $1950.00 It is intended to improve the communications with the membership by sending out Email news whenever something needs to be passed on.
NEW WEBSITE ADDRESS The KMVU3A website has been moved to
http://www.kempseymacleayu3a.com.au . The Notice Board will be updated regularly.
MEMBERSHIP FEES The committee has decided that membership fees will rise by $5.00 per person next year. The fees have been the same since KMVU3A started and unfortunately costs have risen over time. The committee re-grets having to make this decision but considers it would be irresponsible to continue losing money. Vari-ous cuts to our costs have been instituted but will not be enough on their own to solve the problem. New membership fees will be singles $30 and couples $50. It is intended that in the future the newsletter ( U3A Herald ) will be sent out by email where ever possi-ble. You will receive an email when a new edition is available and by clicking on the hyperlink you will be able to download the newsletter and keep it on your computer, to read, or print as you wish. This is a ma-jor part of our cost cutting exercise. If you have a special reason to not have email delivery, let us know on: [email protected] and we will forward it via Australia Post; email delivery will also require you to download the enrolment form.
CONSTITUTION The Constitution is under review. The purpose of which is to bring the document up to date with current legislation and the latest changes to the laws governing associations.
A Special General Meeting to discuss amendments to the Constitution will be held: Tuesday 25th November 2014, 7.30pm at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club.
Agenda: To ratify the amended constitution in accordance with the latest legislation. View both current and proposed constitutions online at www.kempseymacleayu3a.com.au Or on display at 46A Tozer Street from early November 2014.
