The Anchor
G. K. Chesterton was a genius, gifted with a sharp wit and a robust faith.
Among his many “quotables” I found this: fallacies do not cease to be fallacies be-cause they become fashion. Even more subtle—at least for us modern peo-ple—is the idea that something does not be-
come true or good because everyone thinks it is or “votes” for it, or polls in favor of it. Nowadays the passages of the Liturgy of the
Word we have this Sunday sound extremely judgmental. They bind irrevocably sex and gender when
Genesis shows human nature, female and male, equal in dignity—rooted in the image of
God in all of us—and complementary. On top of this Jesus proposes marriage as a sacrament, not simply as contract, as it was
intended in his time “because of the hardness of your hearts”.
A sacrament is not a simple sacred human action, it is an action of God himself, who
joins in, together with the people who perform the sacrament and makes that human action divine.
Yet we have so much trouble even daring to consider our actions as potentially divine, do we? Our experience is that normally human
things and actions are fleeting and unstable, we hardly trust each other and we know how
difficult it can be to be faithful, even to our own free decisions. At the end of the discussion on marriage Je-
sus apparently changes subject, directing his attention to the children, but it is not a change of subject at all. We can all observe
how children are single minded and faithful: they are not complicated, they haven't seen
enough evil in the world to become cynical and jaded, they always root for the good, by instinct they reject duplicity and treason, and
even then they hold hope for redemption. This is why Christ invites us to be more like
them. There is always a child-like corner of our heart that, no matter what, expects the happy ending: it is there that the Image of
God will always live on. Fr. Stefano
