Refreshments will be served Hope to you see you then Our entrances signs are in need some care. They are beginning to show some wear and tear. Some day soon, you might notice that they are not there. The Sign company will come and pick them up and take them back to their shop where they will do a complete care package that will make them look brand new again. Depending upon the cost, we will try to get all of them done at the same time or perhaps one entrance at a time. We will be installing some more decorative lights in the addition to replace those that still have telephone poles. The Floor beds are in desperate need of updating and that will happen with the Spring planting about late March to mid April. The Scrubs need trimmed and we need to install metal edging around the curbs to keep the mulch inside the beds. I will be spending sometime this year at nurseys to try and determine what plants will do well there and will add much needed beauty and freshness to our entrances. This updating is something that we have been wanting to do for a couple of years and now, it really needs to be done! On January 23rd of this year, Cliff and Fonda Boyles at 1220 South Chestnut Avenue here in Turtle Creek celebrated 70 years of Marriage Bliss. Although I don’t get to see much of them during the Winter months, I see a lot of them the very first day it starts to warm. Cliff (90) is busy mowing the yard while Fonda is working either in the house or out in the flower beds. If Cliff is not mowing the then he doing things in his garage. When asked how this wonderful marriage lasted so long, his reply was “clean living, hard work, eating good and following the “rule book”, the Bible.” He said he was discharged from the Service on the 10th of January and got married on the 23rd.“I don’t know why I waited those 13 days.” If you ever want to see a very happy and loving couple, stop by and say “hello and way to go!” They Have a World War II Story to tell in their Garage of History. He makes bird houses too!

I must say, I’m sorry to you and all of you here in Turtle Creek. I questioned whether or not to say this but I feel I had to because as your President, some of my duties have slipped. I tried to keep up with things as best I could as they came up but in many cases just could not. Beginning in early April of 2015, My Wife, Pam was found to have Pancreatic cancer. I spent just about every minute with her in her fight with this awful cancer. There were many days of no sleep, there were many tears, there were many prayers but on June 21, 2015, Father’s Day, she lost her fight. The world I knew, the girl, the woman, the wife, the Grammy that I had for 48+ years was gone and my world was shattered into a thousand pieces. I have been “adjusting” to this new world one moment at a time where somedays I move 2 steps forward and the next day fall 7 steps backwards. I know that others here in Turtle Creek has experienced the same loss and to you, my prayers, my thoughts, pour out to you, for now I know your pain, your grief. It’s an adjustment that no one ever plans for and in many cases never even dream about ,but it happens, and when it does you wonder around thinking about what will I do, how will I go on, but we do. We stumble, we fall, we cry. But we do move forward, for there are others that we must love and care for, with each day being a first and a new “adjustment” in our day of things to do, alone. One day at a time I have begun to put things back together. This newsletter is one of those “things”. There will be more for I do have many steps still in front of me to conquer and I will. I might fail some, but I will keep trying until I win. We loved each other with no excepts, we did everything together with no excepts, we were as one. I thank you and each of you for your understanding and with a promise I am getting things done, one step at a time. Art

For A Better Yard MOLES IF you have a MOLE problem, apply an insecticide that is for the control of Grub worms. IF you remove the MOLES food source, the chances are the MOLES will go else where for their meals. Apply that NOW so as NOT to have to fight them on the defense but rather have a strong OFFENSE so that they don’t get started in the first place. Be sure to apply the insec-ticide in your flower beds too. You may have to do this several times to rid your yard and flower beds of these pests. A good Lawn Service can also do this for you as they treat your lawn.

SCALPING YOUR LAWN A one-time scalping needs to be done to every BERMUDA lawn (not Fescue) each and every Spring. To scalp your lawn set your mower to the lowest setting, now the lawn, and pick up the clip-pings. This removes the old dormant grass and allows the sun to warm the soil causing the grass to green up faster. Scalping will also make the lawn healthier and thicker. This process should be done after March 15th or whenever the chances of a hard freeze has passed. After scalping, BERMUDA needs to be maintained at a 2.5” height. For FESCUE, keep it mowed at 2.5” or higher in the Spring and eventually raise mowing height as temperatures get warmer. In the heat of the Summer FESCUE needs to be at least 3 inches tall.

SPRING DEAD SPOT Spring DEAD SPOT is an airborne fungus that effect highly-maintained BERMUDA lawns. The lawn care industry does not have a definitive cure or preventative that addresses this unsightly problem. The good news is that within the first few weeks of growing season, warmer temperatures combined with high nitrogen fertilizer work together to promote recovery to the effected areas About now is a great time to apply a very good balanced growth fertilizer to your lawn as well as a good weed control to prevent weeds from growing.

CORE AERATION Over time your soil naturally becomes compacted, leaving the subsoil undesirable for healthy lawn growth. Walking, playing, mowing, and watering compact particles reduces the air space necessary for root growth. Compaction is greatest in the upper 1 to 1.5 inches of soil and needs to be relieved by mechanical aeration. This mechanical pro-cess plugs 2-3 inch deep, finger size holes into the soil to improve the air, water, and nutrient exchange with your roots. Again, a Good Lawn Service can to this for you.
