I've talked with over a dozen peace marchers.Half of them don't know what that peace symbol'smeaning' is and I've gotten different answers fromthe other half. What i~ the true meaning of symbol'!

It was firs.t used as a peace symbol in 1959 at theEaster Peace Walk in England. Originally the de-silPlers tried to incorporate the Nand D of nucleardisarmament but settled on the inverted cross in-cased in a ring.

in the Middle Ages as an in-signia for Satan.

Michael Wurmbrand; formerly of Rumania, claims, "The

symbol of the Communist peace is a very well-known

symbol. It was called the witch's foot in the Middle

Ages, and it was a common symbol of the devil, with

the cross reversed and broken."

The centuries-old illustration at left, from

Maurice Bessy 's Pictoriol History Of Magic And 

T:he Supernatural, depicts the ancient gesture

of benediction, the shadow of which represents

Satan. That shadow, according to Satanists, is

the symbol of malediction. A modernized use

of this sign appeared in the Dailv World  of 

October 18, 1969, as the insignia labovel

of the Communist Gis & Vets for Peace.
