Achen’s Message

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Warm Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. On October 16th,

2016 we are planning to celebrate our Harvest Festival. Bible asks us to honour the Lord

with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce (Prov.3:9). Harvest

Festival or Thanksgiving is all about two aspects: giving and receiving. These are not two

separate things at all and cannot or should not be taken apart. Receiving so many good

things in life…giving thanks for what we have received and giving to God and other people

from what we have received …and by doing so establishing a never ending circle of giving

and receiving between God and human beings as well as among ourselves and our fellow

human beings. Through our Harvest Festival we get the opportunity to remain grateful, to

give ourselves, to give our gifts, and to experience an astonishing fullness of life! Let us

honour our Lord with our praises and gratitude, with our skills and our talents, with our

personality and our qualification, with our possessions and our money, with all we have

and all we are.

May the Lord help us to honour Him with our submission!

With prayer and kind regards,

Ninan Jacob Achen

Sunday

School

Corner

Music is an integral part of worship in the CSI Church and an important element of the

congregation’s worship. The contribution of the CSI church towards Christian music is of

tremendous worth. It is the CSI church that has introduced “Singing in Harmony” in Kerala.

Singing has enormous significance in CSI Liturgy. The songs are of both Eastern and Western

traditions. Songs of western tradition have been included on account of the remarkable influence

of the missionaries. The Hymns (“Njaana Keerthananagal”) we use in the worship are the

Malayalam translations of certain popular western songs. These hymns have notations arranged

in precise music scores .When sung it produces harmony par excellence. By this reason church

organ has more importance than any other musical instrument in our worship. In a way, eastern

music is an extension of our glorious culture. The lyrics (“Kristheeya Geethangal”) we use are

mostly arranged from different ‘Ragas’ of Carnatic Music.

All Sunday School students are encouraged to learn a bit about the songs we sing at church,

Sunday School, prayer meetings, and even at home.

1. The beautiful hymn has touched many lives. The song has been sung and/or played in several

TV and Hollywood films, including Titanic. One true life Canadian survivor of the 1912

RMS Titanic tragedy reported that the band did indeed play this song as the ship was sinking.

Name this hymn - ________________________________________

2. An author of more than 8,000 gospel hymn texts, she drew her inspiration from her own faith.

She was blind at the age of six weeks, a lifelong Methodist who began composing hymns at

age six. She wrote “What a friend we have in Jesus”, “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour”,“I

Am Thine, O Lord” and many more.

Name this song writer - ______________________________________________

3. Lamentations 3:22-23 was one of his favorite scriptures: “It is of the Lord's mercies that we

are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is

Thy faithfulness.”

Name this hymn that has this Bible verse ______________________________________

4. He was a German pioneer. While in Kerala, he mastered the native language, Malayalam and

also wrote numerous Malayalam hymns that still refreshes the soul of many Christian

believers today. In 1893, he reached Kerala as an ordained missionary. He wrote several

songs and also translated songs. Some of these include, “Yeshu en swantham, hallelujah”,

“Yeshuvin Thiru padathil”, “Eppozhum Njaan Santhoshikum” and many more.

Name this song writer - ______________________________________

5. The lyrics to this song are based on the last words of a man in Assam, north-east India, who

along with his family decided to follow Jesus Christ in the middle of the 19th century through

the efforts of a Welsh missionary. Called to renounce his faith by the village chief, the

convert declared, "I have decided to follow Jesus." In response to threats to his family,

he continued, "Though no one joins me, still I will follow." His wife was killed, and he

was executed while singing, "The cross before me, the world behind me." This display

of faith is reported to have led to the conversion of the chief and others in the village.

SECRETARY’S NOTE

Now that school is in full session, everyone has been busy with their daily

commitments. However, we have made time to have fellowship and continue activities in

church. Looking back at the month of September, our Youth was able to actively

participate in the annual Church Retreat and volunteer in the community. The Youth was

given the opportunity to donate funds toward diocese-based missions. The money was

donated on September 18, given to our Bishop Rt. Rev. Thomas K. Oomen during his

visit to our church.

In the upcoming month of October, the Youth will be hosting a month long can

drive. All proceeds will be donated to the North Texas Food Bank. All members are

encouraged to join this effort. It is requested that corn products are not donated, but all

donations are gladly accepted. The can drive will end on October 30 and all the food will

be given to the North Texas Food Bank on November 5.

Thank you and have a blessed day.

Sincerely,

Trifeena James

Youth Secretary

SEVEN WAYS TO GIVE

1. The Careless Way: To give something to every cause that is presented, without

inquiring into its merits.

2. The Impulsive Way: To give from impulse--as much and as often as love and pity

and sensibility prompt.

3. The Lazy Way: To make a special offer to earn money for worthy projects by fairs,

bazaars, etc.

4. The Self-Denying Way: To save the cost of luxuries and apply them to purposes of

religion and charity. This may lead to asceticism and self-complacence.

5. The Systematic Way: To lay aside as an offering to God a definite portion of our

gains--one tenth, one fifth, one third, or one half (rich or poor can follow this plan).

6. The Equal Way: To give God and the needy just as much as we spend on

ourselves.

7. The Heroic Way: To limit our own expenditures to a certain sum and give all the

rest of our income.
