MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Your Board of Directors wishe s to thank all Committee Chairmen and those ever active members who contributed so much during 1971. Through their combined efforts, I believe Club 100 is steadily regaining the confidence and status it enjoyed for many years.

Your Board, through the exercise of proper financial management controls, has been able to clear the outstanding mortgage on its apartment building well ahead of its schedule.

With tne di st ribution of more than $9,000.00 donated by the Club 100 to twelve non-profit organizations to assist handicapped children on Oahu last June, we have put meaning to its motto, "For Continuing Serv ice. "

Let us all work actively together during che coming year with confidence and enthusiasm, reminiscence of that group many years ago abroad, to further the ideals and purposes which initially prompted the organization of Club 100.

May you enjoy the merriest of Christmases and may your New Year be filled with an abundance of joy and prosperity.

TSUNEO MORIKAWA

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT WITH THANKS AND APPRECIATION

To all the members and wives who contributed to the publication, collation and distribution of all the 1971 issues of the PUKA-PUKA PARADE, especially to Mikio Tamane, Etsuro Sekiya, Esther Ueno, Frances Okazaki, Bernard Akamine, office staff, Able Chapter (Aprilissue), Dog Chapter (June issue), Charlie Chapter (Sept is_ue), Baker Chapter (Dec issue) and to all others unknown presently.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR"

To climax this wonderful year there wil l be a dinner-meeting in Dec 16, 1971, at one of the china town chop suey house - a night appreciation to the hard working officers of 1971 and the announcement of our new officers

for 1972. Treasurer Richard Oki is making all the arrangements for the "b!g eaters."

Where ever you go, up and down the steps at the trains, bus and subway terminals, shops, temples, and shrines, and you don't have to wonder why there are very few and far between in seeing fat native peo ple in sa shimi land so , where ever t he Club 100 J apan Autumn Tour members are , the na t ives of Ja pan can easily notice that we are f oreigners due to our heavy stature. Those who made the trip from Able Chapter and gotmuch heavier when returned after 34 days in the Orient were Yoshikatsu Matsumoto, Carl Morioka, Jimmy Yoshida, Mikio Tamane, Kunio Fujimoto, Biffa Moriguchi, Blue Nagasaki, Mrs. Richard (Alice) Oki ~nd Mrs. Chikami (Jean) Hirayama. Also, those who brought along their landry woman and their mistress (wives) were Kiyoshi Kami, Tsuneo Morikawa, Kazuo Kamemoto, Shinya Namiki, Dan Yoshikawa and Yoshio Takenouchi.

Watch out for the Able Chapter in the Club 100 bowling league next year. Where ever the tour stop at every shrines in Japan - Able Chapter bowlers made sure that they gave monetary donation to insure a great season next year.

We send our condolences to Mrs. Makoto Sueyoshi and family. Makoto expressed his anticipation of meeting his brother-in-law for the first time in Kumamoto Ken but while on his trip unfortunately he passed away suddenly in Sapporo before fulfilling his long awaited desire.

Deepest sympathy to Hideo Sato - his father passed away in Waikapu, Maui on Oct 28, 1971.

DOG CHAPTER NEWS by Helen Nikaido

Susumu Hata of Hilo had undergone surgery in August. Hope you are well on the road to recovery, Sus. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Nichi Miyao of Kauai who passed away on August 15th . Our condolences to Francis Takemoto whose Dad passed away on August 26, Kats Hanada of Maui whose s',ster died on August 28, and to Max Imai whose brother passed away on Sept 1st. We missed Francis Takemoto at our Dog Chapter reunion in August. He and his wife were on a world tour.

Club 100 Autumn Tour to Japan is now a thing of the past. Our sincere thanks and apprecia :" ion to Frances Okazaki, "Beefa"Moriguchi and their committee for the hard work in making th i s trip an enjoyable and memorable one. Here are some of the incidents I would like to share with you. Little Iris Yamato of Maui went all the way to Japan to get a bee sting. (At Meiji Shrine) First night in Tokyo, rode the taxi and boy, thought we'd never make it to see the end of the tour. Good drivers, though, no wonder they are called Kamikaze drivers. October 5th was a very sad da y . Makoto Sueyoshi passed away. Can't forget the buffet style breakfast at Daiichi Takemoto-kan Inn in Noboribetsu. Alice and Kiyoshi Kami found themselves shoved out of line when the Japan Nat i onals charged to the chow line. (Dynamite comes in small package . ) At this same inn, the e l evator refused to go up on account of being overloaded . " Blue" Nagasaki had to step out as he being the heavy one. Several times, dinner was served privately in our rooms . One time when the "bachelors" envied the marr i ed couples. At Yunokawa, Dori s Tamashiro, Rhoda Kawamata and Al i ce Oki were 'seen walking i n town with the ir yukatas. Dor i s with her pants underneath , Rhoda wearing her overcoat. New fad , gir ls ? At t he beginning, we had difficulty with the Japanese s tyle t oilets but by the end of the tour, the ladies were experts in squatting. Ruth Watanabe and "Mac" Yoshikawa entertained the No. 1 bus with the ir harmonica and "Beefa" (our oyabun) sang love songs. Riding the bullet train was quite an experience, scarey, too. Thirty seconds to board. First time you see Hawaii people rush to get on. At Mt. Nariai in Amanohashidate, one must look at the scenery below u side down. We did and somehow it did look different and nicer.

10

Joined the Nation~ls and did pole fishing along the river. C 'ught two cute little fi shes . Bowling w~s fun in Japan. When you make a strike, the spot light goes on and you take a bow. Saw early risers, Esther and Kiyo Uyeno shooting movies before breakfast. What energy: In Osaka, poor Ukichi Wozumi was all shaken up when he sat in the front seat of the taxi. He almost had his foot through the floor board. No.1 bus "sleeping beauties", "night fighters" Kuni Fujimoto, "China" Yamashina and Mike Ushio made beautiful music everyday in the back seat of the bus. The JTB guides were surprised at the rpomptness of the group. ~ever

late, always on time, sometimes too early. Another shocker was the way we were always eating. Manju, arare, cookies, candies were always being passed around in the bus. Dog Chapter members making the tour were Renee and "Mahut" Kondo of Calif., Mr. & Mrs. Kiyoshi "Doc" Ikeda of Maui, "Spider" Yahata of Hawaii, Phoda Kawamata, Mrs. Itsuto Okamoto, Stella Nakayama, Ken Mitsunaga, Hiromi Urabe, Edith and Max Imai, Jane and Sadashi Matsunam· Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hara, Ruth and Ronald Watanabe and Kenji and Hele Nikaido.

CLUB 100 GOLF CLUB by Eugene Kawakami

The reasons for the small turnout for the last tournament may have been that some of the richer ones are in Japan having a bang-up time and others preferred watching the World Series and the professional football game on TV. But there were 18 guys likem. Me, I'd rather be doing the actual thing instead of watching· the

professionals whether it be bedroom or outdoor sports. or course, I'm not as good as the professionals in either, but it's more fun doing things in my own inadequate way.

Talking about pros ••• Tak-Tak wants his money back from our famous Okinawan Pro. Jimmy didn ' t tell him to watch out for a hook off the 5th tee~ But it wouldn't have mattered . Even if Tak stayed in play on the 5th and sank his putt on the 18th. Yutak, the Ala Wai Pro had everybody beat.

Asit turned out, Kaz could have missed that okole puckering fourth putt on the third green. But boy, if he had five putts, it would have been some story~

JAPAN TODAY by Blue

Japan has been moving on high gear for the past twenty years that the "Dollar or Nixon Sho-ku" has made such a great effect that Japan begin to shift into second or low gear - even to a complete stop (textile business), itts about time for the rest of the countries to show them that selling and buying the finish products should come to a even balance.

Japanese government has been stressing too much in the prosperity of their country that it seem to forget the welfare of their own people. No such thing is for the welfare for the senior citizen-such as our ~ocial security program, low income housing, handicap's, war victims and for the sick. While visiting the Hiroshima city passing thru where the original Hiroshima's live and even today, existing living conditions for them are far worst than the former slums of Honolulu. No one will marry to them due to the blood disease caused by the rediation and the , sad parts of this situation is there seems to be no movement by the local or nationa l government to help them 'in any way.

Yep! It's getting to be too much westernized tha t the nationals are rapidly di scarding the Japanese good customs and habits- you can obtain lot of American and other foreign goods - --After living, talking with the Club 100 tour gang for 34 days, the professional guide who was with us remarked that the Hawaii Japal)ese are the most "japanize"than the natives there and we should continue to keep the good ways of Japanese since we have the samurai blood.

Their standard of living is getting higher and higher each month-due to the labor movement and many job availability, where most of the homes are having the latest appliances and are enjoying life. There se ms to be more sunday drivers (private owned cars) on the roads and surpris to see the cars are spic and span-why?-Now, beside keeping the house clean, preparing the meals, and taking care the kids, the wives in Japa has added another chore by keeping their car clean.

It was in Sendai railroad station, what the members wives saw, they were thankful that they "lucky" live in Hawaii. Saw many women carryin their heavy load of goods on their back, commuting from home to city and b~ck on the trains and also thru out the country, women were doi ng pick and shove l work.

18

(Japan-Today con't from page 18) Where ever we travel-the natives there can't seem to make us out- -

where we came from or what our nationality. To some people, we seem to them as Eskimo, Chinese, Filipino and other asiatic countrymen but Japanese. Some were surprised, after finding out that we were Niseithat we were able to speak some Japanese, even tho' we are American.

Bowling is doing great in Japan-where. ever we travel there are very good establishments and have great promotion program which every day 0

TV they show bowling tips and it seem, the natives watch the same program because the bowling form is the same-thru out". The bowling fee is much higher than here-say, about 300 yen or in American money-90¢.

If you have "lau-lau" feet or wear extra large size clothes - you of of luck. Sumo wrestlers are only large people around and because you have to walk and walk and walk to here and there, up and down the steps - no wonder, the department stores don't carry the large size.

Construction of ·roads, subways and buildings has no Sunday and they work day and night, 7 days a week. The working hours are not regulate except for some business enterprises-such as the banks. Like our bus drivers and guides-who work 5 days straight then rest the 6th days. No set day off and working hours are long. No wonder, it seems like holiday every day on Ginza - millions of people.

While reading in the English edition of the Japanese paper in Osaka came across the article about the first shipment arrived in Honolulu after the Taft-Hartley law went in effect, where the shipment consisted of medical supplies, food, flour, feed, fertilizer and tons of toilet tissue-that really eliminated those tissues as a good 0 ME YA GE to bring home.

Travelling through Kyushu on the last leg of the all-Japan tour, the professional gu~de pointed to us the famous volcano mountain called Mt. Aso. Everyone in the bus, replied, "A-SOOOO."

A steak dinner and meeting will be held on December 2 , Thur sday, at 6 PM. Ballots will be counted at thi s t ime.

Our deepest sympathy go t o Masao and Hideo Sa t o, who lost their father recently.

The "Champ's" by-passed the season league leadersNorth American Life in the final two weeks to capture the title. But the most interesting race throughout the season was the see-saw battle for the cellar position.
