The Trinity Window

TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 903 FOREST AVENUE, HENRICO, VA 23229

Pastor’s Corner

One of my all-time favorite Broadway mu-sicals is Godspell. All of us of a certain age will remember the song Day by Day. I love the lyrics, “…to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day…” What a beautiful summary of the purpose, the spirit and the beauty of Lent. This holy season begins as we confess our humanity and our need on Ash Wednes-

day, February 10. I hope you will participate in one of our two Ash Wednesday Services, 12:00 PM and 6:45 PM.

This year “Day By Day” is the theme of Lent at Trinity. Most people are not aware that the lyrics of that popular song actually originate in a 13th century prayer written by St. Richard of Chichester:

Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits thou hast given me,

for all the pains and insults thou hast borne for me.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know thee more clearly,

love thee more dearly,

and follow thee more nearly,

day by day.

Amen.

This Lent let this be our daily prayer. And may God fulfill our prayer.

Lenten blessings,

Lenten Services at Trinity

Lent is a season of forty days, excepting Sundays, begin-ning with Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, meaning “spring”. It began as a period of fasting and prepara-tion for baptism by converts and then became a time for pen-ance by all Christians.

The following worship services are planned to help you journey to Jerusalem this Lent:

Ash Wednesday, February 10 12 noon and at 6:45 PM

Worship Services in the sanctuary which will include the imposition of ashes.

Many of you may know that our theme in Youth Group

this year is Story TYM (“time”). Youth and adults have

been sharing stories from their lives highlighting a time

in their life where they saw God work through them or

for them. We have heard many incredible stories so

far! Starting in January, we have many opportunities

for more youth and adults to share a story. If you or

someone you know has a story they could share about

God in their life, please contact Brian at bclay-

[email protected]. We would love to have you tell

your story at Youth Group!

Hey Adults!

Are you always saying “I should be more involved in mis-

leaders for our mission trips this summer! Consider joining us!

Teach Us to Pray! 10:45 AM on February 21

Trinity is offering a special class for Kindergarten – 5th grade children. This class is called Teach Us to

Pray and will explore many questions that children may have about prayer. We know prayer is communication with God, but what does that really mean? How do I pray? What can I pray for? Do different people pray different ways? Where and when do I pray? What does the Bible say about prayer? We will look at these questions and more Sunday, February 21 from 10:45 to noon in room 300. Contact Leila Denton (288-6057, ext. 208) if you are interested in signing up your child or have questions.

Blood Pressure Screening

Blood pressure screening is a good monitor-ing tool and is highly recommended, espe-

cially if you are taking high blood pressure medicine. Blood pressure screenings are held in the Parlor on the second Sunday of each month after each service. The hours on each Sunday are 9:00 – 9:30 AM, 10:30 -11:00 AM and 12:00 – 12:30 PM. For questions contact Kathy Barksdale at 288-0239.

Trinity Winter Blood Drive

We registered 41 people and collected 43 units exceeding our goal of 36. Six people performed doubles, each counting as two units. Tiffany Dews, our wonderful new VBS Donor Advocate was on hand to meet our do-nors. In addition to five youth donors, we had five brand new donors. In 2015 Trinity UMC saved 579 people in Virginia. Saving local lives is the greatest gift that the community can give. To register for Sunday, April 10 from 8 AM – 12:30 PM, contact Mary Hetzel at 282-5872 [email protected] or go to www.vadonor.org

2016 Lenten Easter Mission Offering

The annual Lenten Easter Mission Offering will begin this month. More information about this year's LEMO will be included in the March issue of The Trinity Window. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit's movement among us as we seek to empower and enable ministries that continue Jesus' work of bringing good news to the poor and recovery of

sight to the blind, proclaiming release to the captives, and

setting the oppressed free (Luke 4:18).

Serve Opportunities Dr. Seuss Day

Seeking a “done in a day” volunteer project at Trinity’s Micah partner Oak Grove Elementary School in South Richmond? Wednesday, March 2 is Dr. Seuss Day! This year we need volunteers to read a story in K, 1st and 2nd grade classrooms from 3-3:30 PM. If interested in read-ing, email me so that I can add your name to the list. Addi-tional details provided closer to the date. Mary Valenza [email protected]

Thanks to all who helped provide holiday meals and re-membrances to the many families served by the Sher-bourne Food Pantry.

During these cold winter months, please continue to re-member those in our community in need of food assis-tance. This time of year, hearty soups, hot cereal, stews and chili are especially welcome donations. Think of what your family enjoys on a cold winter day and pick up a lit-tle extra to share.

Tellers Needed

Two volunteers are needed to help count the Sunday Offering on Mon-day mornings at 8:15 – 9:30 AM for the months of February, May, August

and November. If you are interested contact Judy Nie-dermayer at 804-288-6057 ext. 203 or e-mail [email protected]. Thank you.

Pickup Truck Thanks

For the last five years, Don and Mary Ann Boyd have allowed the church to use their pickup truck for assorted tasks. The truck has assisted refugee families, staged events on the

grounds of the church, transported surplus materials, and even delivered a chicken coop to Shalom Farms. Unfortu-nately, old age, high mileage, and a few mechanical chal-lenges are taking this workhorse out of circulation. We are very grateful to Don and Mary Ann for their generosity. If someone has a pickup truck that is available for the church to use in the same manner, please contact Bill Pike [email protected].

Thank You Notes

I would like to thank everyone for the cards and prayers during my recent surgery, I know the prayers were working when they didn’t find as much of a problem as they had thought they were going to. Thanks again for all your support!

We wish to thank our wonderful Trinity family for the prayers said for Garrett when he injured his knee on De-cember 8. What could have been a devastating, season ending injury turned out to be the best “injury” possible – a compressed fracture in his knee. Thanks to your love and prayers, he is back on the basketball court playing for Monacan High School, finishing his high school basket-ball career on the highest point possible. Our doctor was even amazed at how quickly Garrett healed (well, when you have all of Trinity praying for you, nothing is impos-sible!). Thanks again for your concern and care and most im-portantly, your prayers. We are blessed to be a part of this faith community. And as Garrett put on Facebook after his first game back, To God be the glory!

Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary would like to give a huge thanks to Trinity members Bill Pike and Nell Ches-ley for their generous donation of over 100 copies of their book, Murray and the Mudmublers, to our 3rd grade stu-dents! The words and illustrations in this book are so beautiful and we are thrilled that so many of our students received a copy before the winter break. Mrs. Shavers’ 3rd grade class was equally delighted to have the story read in her classroom in December! We understand these books were donated by friends and family from around the country and we extend our thanks to those individuals and companies as well!

On behalf of Principal Mary Townes, we would also like to thank Mr. Pike and Ms. Chesley for their donation to our principal's discretionary fund. This donation will help to support the needs of all students here at Oak Grove-Bellemeade.

Thank you again for thinking of us during the 2015 holi-day season!

Connection Alley

At the Forest Avenue entrance to the Welcome Center is an interior bricked walkway connecting the Sanctuary to the Children’s Wing. This area is called Connection Alley, and it is the designated spot for hosting a table to promote an upcoming Trinity event. We have found that an attrac-tive display and encouraging words are two good tools for getting a person’s attention. The goal is to keep Welcome Center open for meeting, greeting, and conversation on Sunday mornings. To reserve a table for Connection Alley simply complete a Connection Alley Table Reservation form found on the church website or in the church office. Tables need to be reserved one week in advance. Any questions, contact Bill Pike via e-mail: [email protected] or phone 288-6056 Ext 211.

Oh My Goodness: Caterer

Runs Out Of Food At The

Wednesday Night Fellowship

Dinner!!!!

Maybe you’re thinking, this could never happen at Trinity, our church caterer, Kelly Kindle, would never let this hap-pen, but it did on Wednesday, January 6. So, why did we run out of food? Preparing the meal each Wednesday is based upon the number of people who sign up, and by the way a person can make a reservation by signing up on the Friendship Pad found in the Sanctuary pews on Sunday morning, calling the church office, making a reservation on line, stopping by the church office, or signing up at the Wednesday night dinner for the following week. To assist Kelly in purchasing and preparation, we need all reserva-tions by 2 PM on Tuesday. So why did we run out? We ran out of food because not everyone who showed up to eat on that Wednesday had properly signed up resulting in an inaccurate count, not to mention a frustrated and disap-pointed church caterer. Help Kelly and our office staff out: please make your reservations by 2 PM on Tuesday.
