The Trinitarian Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton, Kansas AUGUST 2012
ALLELUIAS TO OUR AWESOME GOD &
AUGUST ANNOUNCEMENTS TO THE
AMAZING PEOPLE OF THUMC!!!
First, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU,
to all of you who prayed, followed the elections
on internet/text/etc., sent me texts & emails,
and provided words & flowers of affirmation
comfort/welcome (especially the beautiful
flowers that awaited me in my office upon
arrival on Monday afternoon!)
I give God thanks for Lucas McConnell, who
preached on Sunday, July 22nd. Our prayers go
up for him as he embarks on his journey to
seminary and exploring further his call to full
time ministry!
Well, 2nd time around and I must say that it was
good to come back home! HAPPILY! Going
through the process of being a candidate for
bishop causes me to do some deep reflections
about myself, my call, my ministry, and The
Church!
I have learned that POLITICS is not part of my
DNA. I have learned that people are more
inclined to speak/agree/affirm where I stand
IN PRIVATE vs. speaking out in public. That has
caused me to think AGAIN about my own calling.
I ponder the question “What is it that you are calling me to do with my life, Lord?”
Well, one of the great things about our United
Methodist system is that one does not have to
go through that process alone. We have our
Bishop, the District Superintendent, and our
Staff/Parish Relations Committee, as well as
members & friends of the Church, and of course,
oneself!
I do believe that God continually shapes us and
makes a pathway for each of us so that we can
fulfill the Will of God in our lives. Sometimes it
turns out like we think and more times than not,
it does not.
I am thankful for each and every one of you. As
you live life from day to day, seek God’s Face
and Will for your life. Don’t be surprised if God
pulls a fast one on you. I am grateful that God
DOES SEE THE BIG PICTURE!
So in the meantime, let us continue to run the
race that is before us. May our faith in Jesus
increase daily AND may we grow in our Love of
God and Love of our neighbor as we love
ourselves!
In Jesus’ Love and Service, Pastor Cheryl

Adult Sunday School Classes
On Sundays, ANYONE IS WELCOME to join any of
our six adult Sunday school classes.
Bridge Builders (Room 103) lessons in August will
continue with the focus on “justice”. Some of our
discussion will address the question, what have we been
called to do to enable others to be treated justly?
Challengers (Room201) class will continue their study
of the book “More Bad Girls of the Bible” by Barbara
Essex. Vere English will lead the discussion during
August. The class welcomes you to become part of
their group.
Dream Makers (Room 203) will be viewing a series of
lectures by Bishop Spong, an Episcopal Bishop and
author. Many of the Dream Makers class are in their
late 50’s and 60’s, and are still working. They welcome
any age person.
Faith Builders (Room 101) will be studying “The
Hurried Family”. This study explores the symptoms of
a hurried family and provides counsel for restoring
calmness and giving the gift of rest to others. Faith
Builders is a growing class of 30 and 40 year olds
studying relevant topics related to society and the
church. You are welcome to become a part!
Life Group (the Cry Room) is spending the summer
visiting family and taking vacations. They will begin a
new curriculum this fall. This class is a collection of
adults with college age children. Anyone is welcome to
visit or join anytime!
Wesley Workers (Room 204) follow an eclectic path
of Christian nurture. The class will continue looking at
the subjects Dr. James W. Moore raises in his book, “I
Hear Voices, and That’s a Good Thing!” They will hear
a report on Zimbabwe and our Conference’s
relationship with the United Methodist Christians there,
as well as think about “Good Questions on Heaven and
Hell” from a book of the same name. Wesley Workers
are primarily retirement age, and enjoy getting together
for social events. Visitors are more than welcome!

an informative session “50 Years of Giving at Trinity
Heights”. The session will be during the Sunday School
hour in the Fellowship Hall. Information concerning the
Permanent Endowment Fund and the Building Fund will
be shared. Bring your coffee to the Fellowship Hall and
enjoy the update on these funds.
Scoop on Youth Group
“Feelin’ HOT, HOT, HOT!”
That’s been our theme song this month.
July 8th’s dinner and auction was a huge
success. An inspiring report from the Shiloh Ranch
team, plus information about the Kansas City, KS trip,
were shared. The bidding for desserts and youth help
was led by auctioneer Wade Brubacher and his clerk,
Joan. Leftover meals were served to-go the next week.
The final total raised was $1617.00. Thanks to all
for their hard work, donations of food & desserts, and
generous contributions at the auction.
For the month of August, there will Sunday night
Youth Groups on the 12th and the 26th. The time
has been changed! Both youth groups will be
combined middle and high school and will be from
6:00-7:30. The 12th we will meet at the church for a
water gun battle and watermelon eating contest. On
the 26th, we will have a BurgerFest at Jessica’s new
home. More details will follow.
Also in August, there will be a Back-to-School
pool party sponsored by the Newton Youth Ministry
Network at the municipal pool from 7:00-9:00 p.m. All
youth are invited.
Sign-ups will also be going on in August for Youth
Choir, Youth Bell Choir, and Youth Groups for the fall
semester. Youth and parents are encouraged to make a
commitment to participation these programs.
Volunteer(s) Needed
There are a few times a year when the
secretary needs to be out of the office.
We do have one back up person but it
would be helpful if there were a couple
other people that we would be able to call
upon to help out. The needs would be to take care of
the phone and if possible have the computer skills to
finalize and print bulletins and fold them (on the folding
machine). Also, it would be helpful if the volunteers
would be able or willing to learn to transfer the power
point from the computer to a flash drive and print out
the handouts for the media techs – this is not difficult!
If you would have any interest in this area please
contact the church office. Thank you.

time when we can do that. Please stay tuned for more
information.

office. If you would like to help sort items for next
January’s This ‘n’ That Sale, join us between 10am-noon.

Table Tennis!
Neuroscientist and psychiatrist Dr. Amen calls table
tennis the “best brain sport” “It improves hand-eye
coordination. It’s aerobic, uses both upper and
lower body and causes you to
use many different areas of the
brain to function”
Dr Amen says”Golf is good.
Tennis is terrific. Table tennis is the
best sport in the world!”
No matter if you are young or old, male or female,
you can play with us every Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
downstairs in the youth room. Free! Serve the Lord
more efficiently with a “charged up” brain.

How are you spending your time
during this HOT, HOT weather? -
Relax and cool off by reading a

by the Rebekah circle.
We are pleased that so many of you have made use of
our library. If you have not, we hope you’ll come in to
check it out! In addition to fiction and non-fiction
books for children, youth and adults, we have a variety
of other resources:
Large print and audio books
Videos for all ages

teachers
Collections donated by Respite Care and Piecemakers.
