This year marks the 7th year that Apple Ridge has hosted the annual Trillium Services Rummage Sale. The Rummage Sale started off in 2007 with humble beginnings and has transformed into a two day event complete with radio support!

Over the past 7 years, the Rummage Sale has developed into an important tradition in many people’s lives. It has been a wonderful way for people to meet their neighbors, give back to their community, and develop valued social roles in their neighborhood.

The Rummage Sale has become famous over the years for its unique atmosphere, terrific treasures to rummage through, and the fact that ALL of the money that is earned is then donated to a different charity/foundation each year! In total, the Rummage Sale has donated over $7,000 to local Minnesota charities!

2014 was another successful year, with $1300.85 being donated to the Autism Association of Northern Minnesota. Thank you to EVERYONE who made this year’s sale a huge success! -Mike Molitor

integration celebration!

“P.A.T.H. is a cool idea,” says Kevin Wegleitner, “It starts in the dream world and works backwards in steps into the current world.” Kevin went through the P.A.T.H. process several years ago and continues to work on his P.A.T.H. today. “I still haven’t saved up for a van,” Kevin says, “but I’m working on it.”

P.A.T.H. or Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope is a future planning process that starts in a future without barriers and works backwards in steps to the present. The idea is that going through the P.A.T.H. process helps an individual put their dreams, their hopes, and the path to achieving them down on paper.

“I thought it went good,” says Molly McGovern, who completed a P.A.T.H. this year. “I really hope it all comes true,” she adds.

The process culminates in a celebration shared with invited guests of the P.A.T.H. recipient. During the celebration, a graphic recorder and facilitator work with the person and their guests to discuss and visually record the steps toward the dream life. The end result is a beautiful and colorful piece of paper with all the steps needed to achieve your dreams.

If you’re interested in doing a P.A.T.H. or want more information about the process, please contact your supervisor! - Aaron Gilmour

Director’s Corner -by Brian Annis

Trillium Services is excited to announce that the 5% Campaign has prevailed! Congratulations to all of the direct service professionals, persons served, and stakeholders that took an active role in the 5% Campaign over the course of the past legislative session.

The 5% Campaign was a nonpartisan coalition of Minnesotans working to ask state legislators for a 5% rate increase for Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). This proposed 5% increase was specifically being asked for to increase the wages of our front line supervisors and direct service professionals.

Over the course of the past 7 years, Minnesota’s provider reimbursement rate rose less than 2%, while inflation increased by over 10%. This led to stagnant wages that have created significant hardships for home care providers. In fact, many home care professionals in Minnesota were forced to find second jobs, or change career paths altogether.

After all of the letter writing, emails sent, attendance at rallies, legislative sessions, and phone

calls to senators and local representatives the 5% Campaign has prevailed! During the 2014 Legislative Session, Gov. Dayton and the Legislature enacted a 5% increase in reimbursement rates for direct service professionals effective July 1, 2014.

How will this be implemented at Trillium Services? Beginning on July 1, we will be passing this 5% on by increasing the salaries of our front line supervisors, increasing the wages of our veteran direct service professionals, as well as bumping up our starting wages and entry level supervisor salaries. Over 80% of the total 5% increase will be used for employee wages with the remainder being used for benefits, administrative costs and other compensation.

We believe that this 5% increase will be instrumental in reducing turnover, increasing retention and attracting new quality employees. If we continue to see investments like this by our government in Human Services, careers in our industry will become a viable option and the overall quality of the services we provide will benefit moving forward. And that is something to celebrate indeed!

5% Campaign Prevails and it’s a 100% Celebration!

Did you know you can improve your lifestyle with proper nutrition and regular exercise?

A proper diet should consist of the basic food groups. Based on a 2000 calorie diet you should have:

• Grains: 6oz daily (bread, cereal, rice, pasta)

• Vegetables: 2 ½ cups daily (dark green veggies such as broccoli and spinach, orange veggies such as carrots and sweet potatoes)

• Fruits: 2 cups daily (fresh, frozen, canned or dried are great)

• Oils: Keep them low! (vegetable oil, olive oil, nuts, fish)

• Milk: 3 cups daily (low fat, fat free or skim are the best)

• Meats and Beans: 5 ½ oz daily (low fat or lean meats, bake, broil or grill it!)

Make sure you plan your meals, so that you have variety and don’t get tired of eating the same food. Also pay attention to serving sizes.

If you are eating healthy, regular exercise can also add to improving your life style.

The health beat By: Cindy Sanders

If you exercise on a regular basis you could:

• Lose weight

• Reduce stress

• Relieve symptoms of depression or anxiety

• Reduce your risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer

• Gain more energy

• Sleep better

• Increase bone density

• Strengthen the heart and lungs

• Reduce your risk of developing diabetes

It is proven that just 10-15 minutes of activity twice a day reduces your risk of medical conditions and improves your mental health. That includes walking, raking leaves, mowing lawn and swimming just to name a few.

Hope to see you on the walking trails this summer!

This May I was able to swim with the dolphins in San Diego, California. This has been one of my dreams for years now and I was very excited to be able to take the trip and swim with the dolphins.

Throughout my trip I was able to go to the Safari Park, Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, a navy ship tour, and a Padres game. It was great to be able to see so many different animals and see a professional baseball game in another state.

During my trip I ate at a Denny’s restaurant for the first time ever! I tried some fresh sea food right by the ocean and tried out several other restaurants in the San Diego area. My next big dream trip is visiting Texas or seeing the Baseball Hall of Fame in New York. - Mike Johnson

On May 14th, Pete Boyechko gave a hands only presentation of CPR at the Country Inn and Suites in Hermantown. More than 30 people were able to attend, some who have taken CPR in the past and some who had experienced this for the first time.

Pete started off by showing a short video, along with telling stories of his own experiences while working as a nurse here in Duluth. Afterwards, everyone was able to practice the techniques they learned on adult mannequins. Pete also showed everyone how to utilize an AED in an emergency. In the end, everyone left the presentation having a better knowledge of CPR.

On May 28th, a group from Trillium had a great opportunity to help clean up our Zoo; with the help from the volunteer coordinator, Valerie Slocum. It was a beautiful day to be outside so we all grabbed a broom and began the clean-up process. We swept the pathways around the entire zoo.

Angie Sawyer, Josh Meyer, Lindsay Jackson, Marie Jeanetta, Katelyn Kerfeld, Katie Hanson, Christine Lone, George Kelly, Chris Rohan and Sheri Zauhar were all there to help out in any way that we could. We all had a great time and a good workout! We are hoping to make this an annual volunteer site!

Lake Superior Zoo

Empty Bowl A small group from Trillium Services volunteered for the 21st Annual Empty Bowl benefit on April 15th, 2014 held at the Duluth Depot.

For $20, community members were able to purchase a handmade bowl and enjoy a delicious soup from restaurants in the area. All proceeds went to benefit Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. Second Harvest has provided 3.8 million meals to people in need over northeastern Minnesota and northwester Wisconsin.

This year, Second Harvest successfully raised over $60,000! Trillium has been volunteering for this event for the last 5+ years and has become a volunteer site we greatly look forward to helping with!

Trillium joined thousands of other volunteers at Grandma’s Marathon. Over 30 Trillium volunteers started their day around 5:30am. As in years past, we were at two different mile markers handing out water or Gatorade as the athletes passed.

Despite a cold and wet start to the day, the volunteers brought plenty of enthusiasm and cheered on the runners. A good time was had by all, and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Join Us for Trillium Works! Job ClubJuly17th | August 21st | September 18th

Meetings are held at 1:00pm at the Trillium Office in the Works! area.

Job Club is designed to allow everyone to get together and discuss their experiences while working, job developing, and volunteering. It’s a great opportunity to learn from other people’s experiences.

A nne started out as a volunteer assistant at Here Comes The Sun Daycare in

Hermantown. Very quickly, Anne proved she was fantastic with the children and an incredibly hard worker. She did so well that she was offered a paid position as an assistant.

Anne is great at what she does and the kids like her a lot. She interacts with them in a positive way and has fun with them. It is fun to see her when she is working. Anne is a wonderful asset to the daycare and they appreciate having her as a staff.

She loves kids, and it shows when you see her working with them. Anne is always smiling, laughing and involved with the kids. She has really done a great job there!

Employee of the Month Awards

Jonathan Ahlfs joined Trillium in the fall of 2012 and quickly became an asset to the team at Swan Lake. His passion for providing support to the men at Swan Lake and his genuine respect for the individuals in his direct service have led him to create truly personalized services to the people he works with.

Jonathan’s approach with Ron is irreplaceable due to his calm demeanor and willingness to listen to things that Ron is not able to communicate verbally. Due to

Aprilthis unique and positive relationship, Ron’s face always lights up in excitement when he sees Jonathan walk through the door.

Jonathan is always humble in his attitude towards his successes in his job. Jonathan’s strong thoughts on respect and thoughts on treating everyone equally is what helps make a positive, strong team. Jonathan’s passion for helping others is one of the many reasons he will continue providing support in this field for years to come!

“I enjoy going to cheer on the Bulldogs with Jon!” - JesseJonathan Ahlfs

“Jon is good at cooking burgers on the grill!” – Mark

JuneRay Launderville came to Trillium

Services in September of 2013 with a terrific attitude, an eagerness to learn Trillium’s person centered philophosy, and a strong desire to help others.

What makes Ray special though, is his ability to understand where his support is needed and where it isn’t, especially at Apple Ridge. Ray has done an excellent job on helping Chris with his goal of taking the DTA on the weekend. Chris hasn’t used public transportation in years, but Ray has been with him side-by-side, helping him

learn all of the routes and times, while giving Chris tips on how to stay safe in the community. As a result, after a few months of practice, Chris began taking the DTA independently!

I guess you would say Ray’s a natural at “strength through capacity” and understanding “dignity of risk.” Thank you Ray for all of the work and dedication you’ve given! - Mike Molitor

Chris Johnson, Micah Saarela, James Good, Ray Launderville,

May Annie Rees joined our team here at

Trillium in May of 2012 at Decker. Annie’s understanding of how to be an important part of both Keenan and Taylor’s lives is beyond touching.

She has shown others how to not only respect themselves but the individuals surrounding them in any environment.

When it comes to developing and implementing new approaches, Annie has used her acquired skills and knowledge to maximize both Keenan and Taylor’s capacities.

One example of how Annie has done this is by taking Taylor to a UMD Hockey games.

Annie has a way of making activities exciting which has helped make this such a great success. Since experimenting with attending hockey games, Taylor has become a huge Bulldog’s fan!

Annie has also shown great ambition by researching and assisting with the development of learning activities for a service recipient in our Family Services department.

With Annie’s passion for helping others and putting their needs in front of hers, she has bonded and formed lasting relationships with everyone she works with. -Sam Zigich

Familiar Faces I got Tobie from Jim and Wendy Annis, because they knew I wanted a dog. He was 7 weeks old when I brought him to live with me at McKinley. I took him to puppy school to get him trained.

He enjoyed going to the lake walk and loved to swim in the lake. I brought him to Gooseberry Falls with my best friend Jenny Carlin. He also enjoyed going camping with me at High Banks Resort for Nature Rocks and

He loved to play with his friends, especially his girlfriend Indigo and his best friend Sam.

He was my best friend and I am glad I had him for 7 years. He will be missed by a lot of people (and dogs) that care about him. -Jenny Nemeth
