Since 1995, house prices in Denmarkhave almost tripled, apartment pricesquadrupled – and in the capital, Copen-hagen, apartment owners have actuallyexperienced almost five-fold increases.

However, it now looks like the goodtimes are at an end. The first reports ofa pronounced shift in the Danish marketbegan to emerge in early 2006, and in-deed the latest official statistics onhouse prices show a clear slowdown. After a couple of hectic years, houseprice growth slowed to just 1.5% fromthird to the final quarter of 2006 – arather different pace to what had be-come the norm in recent years. Mean-while apartment prices actually fell 1%compared to the previous quarter.

Falling house prices a rarityWhen a prolonged period of rising pricesis replaced by a slowdown and evenmodest price falls in some sections ofthe market, it is natural to ask if thehouse price bonanza that kicked off in1995 was in reality a bubble and ifprices on residential property are now ontheir way down. Falling house prices are,in fact, a relative rarity. In Denmark, there have only been two occurrences offalling prices since the 1950s – 1979-82and again in the “seven lean years” from1987-93. However, both cases wererather special situations where, in actualfact, it was perhaps mostly political in-tervention, rather than the market assuch, that sent prices down.

In the late 1970s, Denmark pursuedwhat could be termed an active policy ofdevaluation. The result was that the fi-nancial markets lost faith in the Danisheconomy – and interest rates rose above

20%. While inflation was also high, realinterest rates were, nevertheless, doubledigit. High real interest rates combinedwith restrictive legislation on borrowingleft its mark in the housing market dur-ing these years – a market that was al-ready under pressure from the second oilcrisis.

The market rulesGiven all this, it was no great surprisethat house prices dropped. The yearsbetween 1982 and 1986 were character-ised by hefty price rises in the housingmarket, but 1987 saw the tide turn oncemore. Denmark ran into current accountproblems in the mid-1980s, with the defi-cit hitting 5% of GDP. The politicianswere forced to act. They did so by tight-ening the legislation on loans and in-creasing taxes on owner-occupied dwell-ings. The move rocked the housing mar-ket, and prices fell over the followingseven years. The point here is that itwas political intervention – not the mar-ket – that presaged the two most recentdownturns in Danish housing prices.

This time, however, there is no sign ofpolitical intervention; it will be more upto the market to find a balance. As thisis a unique situation, at least this side ofthe Second World War, there are groundsfor some caution when predicting whatwill happen in the housing market in thecoming years – there is simply very littlein the way of precedent.

Rising interest ratesBut what could cause prices to drop? Inthe current macroeconomic climate ofrecord-low and falling unemploymentcoupled with healthy rates of growth it

will hardly be the economic cycle. Inter-est rates may, on the other hand, havemore potential. The rise in interest ratesseen over the past one and a half yearswould support a slowdown in the market– the effect of the rise, all else beingequal, would be a fall in housing pricesof some 10-15%. But all else is notequal! The economic upswing has meanta sharp fall in unemployment, and this isoffsetting the negative effects of thehigher interest rates. Looking ahead, weexpect further increases in interest rates, but nothing that could be expected toseriously depress housing prices.

A second factor with the potential tomove house prices radically is marketexpectations. An excessive number ofmarket participants who bought propertyin the expectation of a capital gainwould mean a shift in sentiment couldeasily send prices down by 10 or 20%.Such a shift in sentiment is difficult tomeasure, but perhaps more importantlyit is worth emphasising that the housingmarket is generally not nearly as specu-lative in nature as, for example, the eq-uity market. Housing is primarily a con-sumer good – a roof over one’s head.

Stabilised pricesOur basic expectation is therefore thathousing prices will stabilise around cur-rent levels in the coming years. The out-look is for just modest additional in-creases in interest rates and, anyway, theDanish economy looks to be in robustgood health. That said, and given thelack of insight into market expectationsand the fundamental market mecha-nisms, we would not care to rule outthat the market may have come so farout of kilter that prices could fall sharply. We see a 25% chance of a major pricefall around 25%. In other words a riskthat should be taken seriously, butthat, on the other hand, should not beexaggerated.

HOUSE PARTY IS OVER SO WHAT ABOUT THAT MORNING AFTER FEELING?

BRIEFING

Danish production of biodieselBy the end of 2007, Danish motorists will be able to buy biodiesel made fromslaughterhouse by-products and household waste. A consortium comprising theTechnical University of Denmark, the Danish Technological Institute, Grundfos,Daka, OK Benzin and Dinex is constructing a full-scale plant with a nameplate ca-pacity of 50,000 tons biodiesel annually. The plant’s technology will be based onknown chemical processes which convert animal fat into biodiesel. The consortiumalso plans to use a new technology for converting waste sludge into second gen-eration biodiesel. When both slaughterhouse by-products and wet sludge are fullyexploited, it can cover up to 10% of diesel consumption in Denmark.

Danish forces out of IraqThe Danish government is to pull out its Danish battalion of 400 soldiers from Basra inIraq by August 2007. The battalion has been part of the international coalition in Iraqsince 2003. Denmark will instead strengthen the coalition with a number of helicopterswith their crews and mechanics. Denmark is also ramping up its support for training ofthe Iraqi armed forces and the Iraqi police. The Danish government will furthermore in-crease its financial aid for the rebuilding programme in Iraq. Denmark’s military involve-ment in the international anti-terror offensive is to be strengthened by the deployment ofmore soldiers in Afghanistan. Denmark already has 390 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

More paternity leave forDanish menIn spring, three-year collective agree-ments were entered, covering morethan 6,000 industrial companies. It isestimated that the new agreementswill cost employers about 4% on anannual basis. The implementation ofthe agreement will be a historic inno-vation. Henceforth employees them-selves can decide whether to havethe 4% paid as salary, as pension oras holiday. The new agreement alsocontains a significant improvement inthe opportunities for supplementarytraining, and paternity leave hasbeen extended by three weeks.

The fact box on Denmark tells its ownstory: A relatively small country in thelarge globalised world, with just twocompanies on the Forbes 200 list. Itslargest conglomerate, A.P.Møller-Mærsk,only ranks 145th among the world’s big-gest corporations.

Nonetheless, of Denmark’s more than10,000 registered exporting companies, over 500 are world leaders in their field. No other country boasts a higher propor-tion. They are highly specialised compa-nies, which have found the niche in

which to excel. And the way they havefound it is through innovation, quality, design and hard work.

“Denmark Limited”This comes as no surprise to WaldemarSchmidt, chairman of Superfos A/S,Thrane&Thrane A/S and former CEO ofISS, the world’s largest service organisa-tion. He is one of Denmark’s most inter-national business leaders with board po-sitions in a large number of Europeancompanies. In 2006 he published abook, which will blow away the mythabout Denmark as an old fashioned agri-cultural country, and instead present thereality of Denmark as an advanced in-dustrial nation with a highly developedknowledge society.

“The book, Denmark Limited – Globalby Design, which I have produced in col-laboration with a number of organisa-tions and individuals including the Irishjournalist Clare MacCarthy, who lives andworks in Denmark, is really the result ofpent-up irritation and frustration,” saysWaldemar Schmidt. “Whenever I spoketo foreign friends and business acquaint-ances, I heard the myth about Denmarkconstantly repeated: about cows grazing

in meadows, picturesque farms produc-ing butter and bacon and so on. YesDenmark is like that, but it is alsoamong the world’s most competitive in-dustrial nations. The way we have organ-ised our society has also helped fostersome of the world’s best companies.”

Famous brandsWhen Waldemar Schmidt questionsthose he knows more closely, they are infact aware that Denmark is also knownfor its extensive social welfare provision, high taxes and strong unions. They alsoknow LEGO and drink a Carlsberg fromtime to time. And yes, Bang & Olufsen isamazingly designed. But that’s about it.

“Things are going well in Denmarkthese days, but not well enough,” saysSchmidt. “Globalisation is just the begin-ning and no one knows where it willend. So we constantly have to developand make ourselves known in the world. It’s one thing to perform well on exportmarkets, but it’s another to get the mes-sage across that Denmark is an out-standingly competitive country for for-eign companies to invest in, and estab-lish subsidiaries and production. And notleast, it’s a challenge to attract foreign

The Danish mindsetWaldemar Schmidt points out that Den-mark has become a rich and highly de-veloped country despite its relativelysmall size, lack of raw materials and aless than temperate climate.

“Ever since Viking times Danes havelooked beyond the country’s borders.Natural resources are too limited to cre-ate prosperity, so human resources arethe driving force. And education fuels themotor – with knowledge, creativity, inde-pendence and capability. This is what Icall the Danish mindset. It has created aDanish workforce with a unique blend ofpracticality, imagination, willingness tocooperate and an ability to act autono-mously in many situations.”

Ideas and knowledgeAccording to Waldemar Schmidt, theDanish Mindset is the fundamental rea-son for Denmark’s success on the worldmarket. All successful Danish companiesare founded on strong ideas and a richstore of knowledge: wind turbines, whichaccount for half the world’s wind power;

satellite telephone systems; hearingaids; food ingredients; medico equip-ment and environmental managementproducts. And many more.

“I must admit I was surprised tolearn, while working on the book, that itis a Danish firm which manufactures theenzyme that makes sausages producethat special sound when you bite intothem. And that all sausage manufactur-ers in the world which want this soundget the enzyme from this company.”

“Or take Larsen Strings, the RollsRoyce among suppliers for cellos andother stringed instruments,” saysWaldemar Schmidt. “Although muchpricier than other brands, there areplenty of professional musicians whowould not dream of using anythingelse.”

“It is typically Danish to ask what is typi-cally Danish”, the Danish writer, ElsaGress, once said. Nevertheless, in theautumn of 2005, the Confederation ofDanish Industries invited 100 foreignbusinessmen and diplomats to its An-nual Conference to debate the Danishmindset and how Danes are distinguish-able from other nationalities.

Don’t just be nice – be inspired – wasthe main message from the 100 foreignguests. The message was basically a callfor Danes not just to travel the worldbut to be inspired by the surroundingworld and by foreigners and to dare tochange attitude and habits.

A global outlook is an important pre-requisite for Denmark. Some 712,000Danes, or more than 40 per cent of the

total private workforce, are employeddirectly or indirectly because of exports. From that perspective, it is not surpris-ing that four-fifths of Danish companiesconsider globalisation as somethingpositive which increases opportunities.

COMPETITIVE EXPORTS THROUGHINNOVATION AND KNOWLEDGEIt is well known that the bumble beecan only fly because it doesn’t knowthat it can. This picture has recentlybeen used when economists speculateon how Denmark has managed to rideon a wave of high competitiveness whilelarge parts of Europe struggle to keepup the pace.

Danish companies prove competitivedespite the fact that a number of new

emerging markets – principally in EasternEurope and South East Asia – enjoy con-siderably lower costs than Denmark.Danish companies have partly compen-sated for their high cost levels by beinghighly productive, thus ensuring thatgoods produced in Denmark do not growtoo expensive. However, the phenom-enon also proves that competitiveness isnot just a question of production pricebut certainly has a quality aspect.

By making products of a higher levelof refinement and finish, Danish compa-nies can fill lucrative niches in the exportmarkets by integrating more knowledgeinto the products through high quality, commitment to design, branding, serv-ice, customisation and constant innova-tion and renewal of export products. ing so makes Danish products capable ofachieving high prices in the world mar-ket compared with those of competitors.

Products that can be sold at higherprices than competing products are re-ferred to as upmarket products. They areaimed at customers who are willing topay a higher price for a quality productrather than purchasing a lower qualityrival product at a lower price.

This is a strategy chosen by the majorpart of Danish export companies asabout 40 per cent of Danish exportgoods consists of upmarket products –here defined as export products whichare at least 15 per cent more expensivethan similar products in the EuropeanUnion. In this regard, the Danish pharma-ceutical industry is a forerunner withmore than 90 per cent of its productsbeing upmarket. By comparison, only 35-40 per cent of Germany’s and France’s

pharmaceutical exports are upmarket. And the trend has been rising since theend of the 1980s. This places Denmark ahandsome fourth in the quality hierarchyof the EU. Commitment to upmarketproducts is of course not the sole oppor-tunity available to Danish companies. However, in the age of globalisation, theaspect of balancing quality with pricebecomes increasingly important.

UTILISING THE INTERNATIONALDIVISION OF LABOUREvery generation in history has its ad-venturers. When the young Marco Polo in1271 decided to explore the world andhead for uncharted territories in China,he discovered and fell in love with aproud culture and realised that Europewas not alone in the world. When hereturned to Venice, he opened the eyesof European traders and exporters with

his tales of a world far away and therebyplanted the first seed for the develop-ment that we have recently named“Globalisation.”

Globalisation has opened access tofar corners of the world and in recentyears, many Danish companies havemoved from being national to global.Company focus is moving from interna-tional sales to global optimisation of thevalue chain, and Danish companies in-creasingly locate individual parts of thevalue chain where it is most profitable.Advances in transport and communica-tion technology enable companies tooutsource parts of the value chain toother parts of the world, and therebysharpen their competitive edge to getaccess to special skills or simply to getcloser to new markets.

Physical borders and distances areless important to global production net-

works. The international division of la-bour is growing not only across nationalborders but also across industries. Forexample, outsourcing of service tasks, transport tasks or complex tasks in IT oradministration is today a natural part ofcompany activities.

HIGH LABOUR MARKET FLEXIBILITYDenmark’s flexible employment regula-tions in collective agreements and labourlegislation make it easy for companies toadjust to changing conditions and thusless risky to hire new staff. This has cre-ated a very dynamic labour market. Eachyear, 800,000 Danes, or one out ofthree, change to another job, some250,000 Danish jobs are eliminated andaround 260,000 new ones are created.

The high degree of flexibility entailedby labour market institutions concentrat-ing on job creation rather than job pro-

tection does not make employees feelparticularly anxious about their employ-ment situation. On the contrary, Danishemployees are among those in Europewho show the strongest feeling of jobsecurity.

ADAPTATION IS THE KEYWORDMarco Polo spent 3 1/2 years’ travellingbefore he reached the town of Cambaluc, which later became known as Beijing. Hewould never have imagined that someday, the journey could be done by planein just a few hours whilst chatting withcustomers on the internet on the waythere.

The limited size of the Danish markethas encouraged Danish companies to bea new generation of Danish Marco Poloswho eagerly look for new territories toexplore. And they are proving to be ca-pable and creative explorers.

The keywords for success are globaloutlook and adaptability. The companiesthat are most successful see change asan opportunity and not as a threat.

Every process of change requires seiz-ing new opportunities. This underlinesthat the winning strategy is dynamic.Countries or companies that are not con-stantly aware of adapting to the moreand more rapidly changing business cli-mate will soon find themselves on adownhill slide. Or put differently: in theglobal economy, the distance betweensuccess and failure has decreased.

Had Elsa Gress been alive today, shewould have had noticed at least onething that is typically Danish: the na-tion’s companies are global oriented andspecialized. Or maybe even truer: spe-cialization and global orientation are pre-requisites for Danish companies to besuccessful.

In 2006, ProfessorsAndrew Z. Fire andCraig C. Mello won theNobel Prize in medicinefor their discovery ofhow individual geneexpression in our cellsis controlled. Theirwork has been hailedas a breakthrough. Byidentifying the portionof human DNA thatsynthesises faulty pro-teins, which results incancer cells, Fire andMello have succeededin creating the RNAthat regulates the syn-thesis of the problem-atic proteins, therebylaying the foundationinhibiting the forma-tion of the diseasedcells.

However, actuallygetting the RNA intothese cells is a majortask, since they have aformidable ability toprevent such attempts.Considerable cunningis required, and Profes-sor Jørgen Kjems andhis team at the Univer-sity of Aarhus, Den-mark, have plenty of it.

Trojan HorseInspired by the legendof the Trojan Horse, the Aarhus team hasfound a method of de-livering RNA moleculesto the diseased cells

so that the diseaseprocess is arrested.

“Comparisons withthe Trojan Horse areappropriate,” says Pro-fessor Kjems. “We playon the diseased cells’appetite for sugar. Acancer cell loves sugar, and so by “sugar-coat-ing” the RNA molecule,we can smuggle thedisease treatment intothe cell.”

Danish PhD student Samuel Schmidt hasdeveloped an ingenious computer pro-gramme, which can ‘translate’ soundsfrom a digital stethoscope, and revealarteriosclerosis in the coronary artery. Inthe long term the invention will enableGPs to identify at an earlier stage pa-tients who are at risk of coronary throm-bosis.

About 22% of all deaths in Europeare associated with arteriosclerosis ofthe coronary artery, which often leads tomyocardial infarct – better known as aheart attack. The majority of thesedeaths could be avoided if arteriosclero-sis of the coronary artery were identifiedat an early stage and preventive treat-ment given.

HEALTH TECHNOLOGY:HEALTH TECHNOLOGY:HEALTH TECHNOLOGY:HEALTH TECHNOLOGY:HEALTH TECHNOLOGY: When blood passes through a narrowedcoronary artery it creates an audible turbulence. A Danish studenthas developed a computer programme, which can spot the soundand reveal the potentially life threatening condition much earlierthan has so far been possible

Visualising the sound“It is the arteriosclerosis, which typicallygives rise to blood clots,” says SamuelSchmidt, a postgraduate student at theInstitute for Health Technology, AalborgUniversity. “The coronary arteries supplyblood to the heart to enable it to func-tion. When the arteries clog up, it in-creases the risk of blood clots and heartfailure.”

Samuel Schmidt’s invention uses thedigital stethoscope’s ability to hearblood flowing through the coronary arter-ies. “When blood passes through a nar-rowing it creates an exit turbulencewhich is audible,” says Schmidt. My in-vention uses various sound recognitionmodels to mathematically analyse andvisualise these sounds.”

Inexpensive toolUntil now doctors have had to use ex-pensive and time-consuming coronaryangiography to reveal the presence ofarteriosclerosis. But it is often first whenthe disease has progressed that angiog-raphy is performed. Samuel Schmidt’sinvention makes it possible to develop arelatively cheap tool for GPs, which to-gether with their diagnostic knowledgecan make the alarm bells audible muchearlier.

Samuel Schmidt and his co-studentClaus Graff are currently patenting thesoftware on which the analysis methodis based.

“If everything goes as we expect themarket could be worth billions,” saysSamuel Schmidt. “The response we havereceived from GPs has been very posi-tive. The new tool gives them the oppor-tunity to refer patients for treatment be-fore damage is done.”

Although no cases of smallpox havebeen registered anywhere in the worldsince 1980, the threat of its reappear-ance is very real. An outbreak can occurin several ways. It could be as a result ofa terror attack, or a species-jump fromanimals to humans, or the mutation ofan existing virus, or its escape from asecure virus storage facility. With a virusincubation period of up to 14 days, andwith a world population constantly trav-elling from one part of the world to an-other, a smallpox outbreak would be acatastrophe for thousands of people.

Vulnerable groupsFor this reason many countries havestockpiled large quantities of smallpoxvaccine in readiness for a potential out-break.

But there is a problem with existingstocks of vaccine. For a quarter of all thepeople with the greatest need for protec-tion, the current vaccine might kill themrather than save them. They are peoplewith insufficiently robust immune de-fences: children, the elderly, HIV positive,

cancer patients, pregnant women andpeople with organ transplants.

Now a Danish research based com-pany, Bavarian Nordic, has developed asmallpox vaccine which can be used byall, and is free of side effects.

Order from USA“The vaccine, called Imvamune, hasbeen supported by the American healthauthorities throughout the testing pe-riod,” says Rolf Sass Sørensen, VicePresident of Bavarian Nordic. “Smallpoxvirus spreads very easily, and is viewedas a constant threat by the US anti-terroragencies. To date we have supplied re-search and test doses to the USA worthalmost USD 170 million. We have our-selves invested in building productionfacilities to handle the next order, whichwill be for many million doses of vac-cine. The US health authorities have sofar pledged to buy 20 million doses withthe option of a further 60 million. We areconfident that the actual order will comethis year.”

Strengthening immune defencesBavarian Nordic’s smallpox vaccine uti-lises its MVA-BN® gene technology togenerally strengthen the immune systemand build up resistance. The vaccine isprotected by around 400 patents.

“The technology has made it possibleto produce a vaccine, which elicits animmune response in 3-4 days, whereasconventional vaccines take 10-14 days,”says Rolf Sass Sørensen. “Furthermore, there are no side effects and everyone, including vulnerable groups, can be vac-cinated. The unique feature of the tech-nology is that it represents completelynew thinking about vaccines. It has botha preventative and a therapeutic modeof action, which has relevance for manyother diseases including cancer, HIV andmeasles. We are also developing a prod-uct to strengthen the general immunedefences, which if successful could be-come a universal vaccine.”

SMALLPOX VACCINE FOR ALL

SMALLPOX: Smallpoxis much feared as apotential biologicalweapon, yet currentlystockpiled vaccinescan only be used for75% of those whoespecially need protec-tion. But now BavarianNordic has developeda vaccine for everyone.

Vice President Rolf Sass Sørensen, Bavarian Nordic

Besides being a state-of-the-artpharmaceutical factory, BavarianNordic’s production facilitiesserve as an incubator for chick-ens. The company is a major pro-ducer of chicken embryo cells, which are used as growth mediafor the smallpox vaccine Imva-mune.

NeuroSearch, a research based Danishbiopharmaceutical company, is close tocompleting development of a drug forthe treatment of obesity. The drug isaimed at preventing development oftype 2 diabetes. The candidate drug –tesofensine – is a result of the compa-ny’s research in ion channels and cellmembrane transporters, which are impor-tant to neurotransmission in the brain.

NeuroSearch originally developedtesofensine as a drug for the treatmentof Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’sDisease. But during preclinical studies, itwas noticed that tesofensine showedsome remarkable side effects: the drugmarkedly improves glucose toleranceand insulin sensitivity as well as lower-ing cholesterol and fat levels in theblood. Tesofensine also has a significanteffect on weight and fat reduction.

In 2000 NeuroSearch produced candi-date drug NS2359 following researchinto neurotransmitters in the brain. In the long term it could be a signifi-cant advance in the treatment of de-pression.

Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmith-Kline believes so much in NS2359,that in 2003 it entered a strategicalliance with NeuroSearch with aview to completing its development.

“There are many different ways oftackling obesity,” says FlemmingPedersen, CEO, NeuroSearch. “Our routeis via the brain, where tesofensine hasan effect on neurotransmitter productionwhich can in turn influence metabolism.”

To Flemming Pedersen, obesity is adisease of pandemic proportions.

“When patients become obese, it is

often very difficult to tackle it with con-ventional slimming aids. Patients maylose weight initially, but quickly put it onagain.”

The phase II clinical study was initi-ated in mid 2006 and completion is ex-pected mid 2007. Tesofensine is plannedto reach the market after 2010.

NeuroSearch will also re-ceive significant milestone payments aswell as attractive royalties on sales. Todate, phase II clinical studies have beeninitiated, involving several hundred vol-unteers in many countries.”

NS2359 has a “triple mode of action”,

which means that it affects three neuro-transmitters simultaneously. This modeof action is expected to produce an opti-mal reduction in disease symptoms anda much faster response time than thatseen with the antidepressants already onthe market. An earlier study has shownthat NS2359 results in a considerableimprovement in cognitive functions suchas awareness, concentration andmemory, which can be adversely affectedby standard antidepressant treatments.

To architect Lars Rømer-Nygaard design and music aretwo sides of the same coin. Based on the Golden Sec-tion, a fascination with the peculiarities of magicsquares and the fundamental role of 1V2 in math-ematics, combined with a polymath’s intricate brain,he moves effortlessly between jazz at an advancedlevel, inventions, development of building and pro-duction methods, bookcases and notice boards.

“To me design is a matter of logic,” says LarsRømer-Nygaard. And with the Golden Section and 1V2in my toolbox, the result is renewal every time.”

The ultimate bookcaseRømer-Nygaard and colleague Per Borre’s latest book-case system Nonus is conquering an internationalmarket based on the same approach, by logically de-termining desired and undesired properties. Thebookcase should be: able to be assembled withoutthe use of nails, screws, brackets or glue, flexibly puttogether in endless individual combinations, suitablefor placing along a wall or around a corner. All theproblems were solved with a both simple and ingen-ious principle, where all the parts slide into eachother and lock into position at the back so that theparts function like a bond in brickwork. A patent forthe system has been applied for, and gradually as thesystem’s success spreads, large scale production isbeing prepared.

“The way to assemble Nonus is simple logic, onceyou understand the principle,” says Rømer-Nygaard.“The fact that we have also put beautiful formats intothe construction itself by designing a universal mod-ule according to the magic square, makes the book-case even more beautiful.”

Inspired by musicWhen Lars Rømer-Nygaard plays jazz trumpet, he isalso in the golden section’s universe where music andthe attempt to square the circle are elevated to ahigher plane.

It was during a jam session that Lars Rømer-Nygaard had the idea for the prefabricated Mansardroof construction, where the sides are lifted with acrane into the vertical position. With specially pat-ented brackets, the lowest part of the roof is firstfixed to the wall plate, after which the roof parts arelowered towards each other. When the two halvesmeet at the right angle, they click together and theroof construction is complete.

Rømer-Nygaard has also designed a notice boardfor use with both magnets and pins, which has be-come highly popular. Thought through logically, like amathematical equation, where the correct solutionsuddenly appears. Eureka!

RECORD YEAR FOR DANISH SHIPPING

Danish shipping companies have em-barked on the biggest newbuild pro-gramme ever. A total of EUR 12 billion isbeing invested in new ships across theshipyards of Asia and Europe. By 2011,more than 250 ships will have been de-livered, a figure corresponding to 50% ofthe current Danish merchant fleet. Thenewbuild programme will bring the aver-age age of the Danish merchant fleet’sships below 5 years. The average age ofthe rest of the world’s fleet is about 12years.

“The record-breaking newbuild pro-gramme reflects the optimism of Den-mark’s shipping industry,” says TorbenJanholt, chairman of the Danish Shipown-ers’ Association and director of J.

Lauritzen shipping company. “Since 2002the industry has seen annual growth of 15-20%. We estimate that Danish shippingcompanies contributed over EUR 21 billiongross to 2006 foreign exchange earnings.”

The growth is coming not only fromshipping freight with the companies’ ownships, but also from solid business acumenregarding buying and selling of tonnage, and chartering of foreign ships. The Danishshipping industry’s operation of foreignships in pool collaborations counts forthree times more than the operation of itsown ships. About one tenth of the world’smerchant fleet, corresponding to more than1 billion tons, is controlled by Danish ship-ping companies.

All Danish shipping companies supportthe Quality Shipping concept as definedby the UN International Maritime Organi-sation IMO. The concept covers effectiveenvironmental protection in connectionwith shipping, safety at work and legal

The Maritime Cluster in Denmark is morethan shipping companies and ships.Around 100,000 people work in a widerange of shipping-related industries, in-cluding design of ships, shipbuilding, navigation and telecommunication equip-ment, electronic control systems, engines, paint and shipfitting.

“When our ships are built in Korea,China or Japan, it’s actually only the as-sembly work and the steel which issourced locally,” says Jan Kastrup-Nielsen, president of Lauritzen Kosan.“Danish developed or produced equip-ment and fittings usually constitute up to35% of the price. And it is not only shipsordered by Danish shipping companies. Both shipping yards and foreign shipping

companies have woken up to Danishsub-suppliers.”

In parallel with its strong and innova-tion driven industry, Denmark has built aleading-edge research and developmentenvironment which forms part of theDanish Maritime Cluster. Research intosubjects which help define the ‘QualityShipping’ concept are conducted at theTechnical University of Denmark, the Uni-versity of Southern Denmark and at re-search centres around the country. Keyareas comprise robotics, geographicalinformation systems, collision analysis, wave loads, software for logistics andmore besides.

agreements are strictly adhered to, thatcargos depart and arrive precisely on timeand are not damaged on route, that pricesreflect market conditions, and that techno-logical improvements are constantly madeto both fleet and working processes.

Danish shipping is quickly establishingitself as a world leader. The Danish ship-ping industry itself believes this is dueto the Quality Shipping concept, whichthe Danish Shipowners’ Association isoperating with. High quality ships, well-trained sailors and advanced logisticssystems all help to ensure deliverieswithout delays. On every benchmark cri-terion, Danish shipping companies arepushing the performance envelope.

One striking example is the buildingof 10 gas carriers which Danish shippingcompany Lauritzen Kosan has under con-struction in Korea. Right from the draw-ing board, these carriers are designed toset new standards for transporting Liq-uefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and petro-chemical gases on carriers.

Green Passport“Before we designed the new carriers,we started thinking from first principles,”says director Jan Kastrup-Nielsen,Lauritzen Kosan A/S. “We took our corevalues as a starting point: Competence,Respect, Entrepreneurship, Accountabil-ity, Team Spirit and Enthusiasm, andasked ourselves how can we build betterships. Every part of the carrier was scru-tinised. This resulted in a large numberof improvements, so our ships today aremiles ahead of traditional gas carriersregarding the external and working envi-ronment, safety and effectiveness.”

The 10 new vessels are the first gascarriers in the world built from the out-set to meet the UN’s International Mari-time Organization’s requirements for en-vironmental friendliness – the Green

Passport. This requires that all materialsused in the carriers are registered sothat the correct precautions are takenwhen the carriers are scrapped, and ad-verse environmental impacts areavoided.

“At some point it will be a require-ment for all vessels,” says Kastrup-Nielsen. “We have implemented theGreen Passport before it becomes com-pulsory, both to show that the environ-ment matters to us and to keep ahead ofthe competition, despite the expense.”

Saving time and money“To improve the carriers, we developedthe idea of exploiting residual gases fromthe main tanks for fuel,” says Kastrup-Nielsen. “It reduces environmental impactas well as making the process of clean-ing the cargo tanks more efficient. Thegas products we carry often differ widelyin structure and chemistry, and this re-quires careful cleaning when the cargotype is changed. In collaboration with theDanish company Oxymat, we have devel-oped an advanced nitrogen plant whichtogether with containerised deck tanksare central to making our cargo handlingprocess more efficient. The plant carriesthe residual gases from the main cargotanks up into two 20 foot containertanks placed on the deck. Whereas hith-erto cleaning had to be carried out inport, it can now be done at sea, andwhen we arrive in port, loading can startimmediately. It saves an amazing amountof both time and money.

Lauritzen Kosan’s new carriers alsobreak with traditional thinking regarding

release of residual gases from the maintanks. Instead of venting residual gasesto the atmosphere, the shipping com-pany has developed methods of utilisingthe gases for producing electrical power,or to add to existing gas cargos of thesame type. The methods will reduce to-tal gas release from the 10 carriers byapproximately 4,000 tons annually, atthe same time saving on heavy oil forgenerator operation.”

Danish subsuppliersThe Green Passport, the nitrogen plantand the development of the fuel systemfor the auxiliary engines are just threeout of 39 improvements designed intoLauritzen Kosan’s 10 new gas carriers. Many of the improvements have beencreated in collaboration with other com-panies in the Danish shipping cluster. When the carriers are completed and sailfrom the Korean shipyard, componentsproduced in Denmark or under licencefrom Danish companies will account foraround 30% of the value.

“We have been right down into thedetails – whether it’s a pump, a hydraulicsystem, a manifold or a major upgradeof an important element such as crew’squarters. It’s all part of setting newstandards for what modern carriers cando. At the same time it gives us a com-petitive edge which few others canmatch. All of this is being done for thesake of our customers, to give them thebest in terms of safety, environmentalconsciousness and effectiveness.”

Global presenceThe newbuild programme is the result ofa globalisation strategy initiated by thecompany a few years ago. From being asmall speciality shipping company oper-ating in northern and western Europewith oil and chemical tankers in the 500– 6,000 DWT range, Herning Shipping istoday steaming ahead towards a realglobal presence. A new office in Singa-pore will ensure the company’s growth inthe Far East. Herning Shipping also has acompany in southern France, which coor-dinates activities in the Mediterraneanand Africa. By virtue of its newbuild pro-gramme, the company also has a pres-ence in China, Indonesia and Turkey.

Herning Shipping’s strategy has givenit one of the world’s youngest fleets, with an average age of 5.4 years. Thetonnage of the ships is also increasing.Three of the new vessels for delivery thisyear will be over 11,000 DWT.

promising our fast and reliable qualitytransportation of liquid products in bulkdirectly from large oil companies or fromcustomer to customer. Our ships can callat any port and navigate straits, riversand canals which are unnavigable to oth-ers,” says director Lars Vang Christensen,Herning Shipping.

Lars Vang Christensen backs this upby saying that Herning Shipping’s fleetmade over 600 calls to port per quarterin 2006, demonstrating the company’sability to optimise its logistics.

“Tank cleaning is a good example ofour quality and environmentally friendlyshipping. In just a couple of hours wecan change product, which can rangefrom heating oil to exquisite wines. Fewothers can do that. It gives us a flexibil-ity which benefits both ourselves andour loyal customers.”

Healthy growthHerning Shipping’s transport quality hashelped it gain several long-term con-tracts with global oil companies. Twothirds of the company’s revenue comesfrom contracts of affreightment, whilethe rest comes from the spot market.Normally such a split provides a low riskprofile, but does not generate stronggrowth. However Herning Shipping hasachieved around 20% annual growth inavailable tonnage.

“The new international rules for tank-ers, which came into force from the startof this year, mean that many older shipswill have to be scrapped or rebuilt,” saysLars Vang Christensen. “We have alreadystarted doing it. With the globaleconomy looking as it does now, the fu-ture for quality transportation of refinedproducts looks bright. There is moreneed for us today than ever before.”

If a ship advises its arrival in Yokohamaon Tuesday at 17.00 and departure at21.00, then it means that the ship mustsail at 21.00, and not Wednesday at01.00 because the necessary bunkeringhad not been arranged. Even a delay ofa few hours can result in disproportion-ate costs for shipping companies.

“Bunkering of oil and lubricants ontime, in the right quantities and of theright quality, cannot be allowed to gowrong,” says sales director Jesper Juhl ofA/S Dan-Bunkering Ltd., headquarteredin Middelfart, Denmark. The companyalso has offices in Copenhagen,Kaliningrad and Shanghai. Dan-Bunker-ing has become the world’s second larg-est company in this niche sector by culti-vating those quality criteria sought afterby shipping companies worldwide.

“And of course at the right prices,” headds. “If a shipping company can obtainthe same service at a cheaper price fromanother supplier, they will take it. We areconstantly on our toes, do our home-work and offer that little bit extra to gainand maintain our customers’ loyalty.”

Understanding customer needsOne of the reasons why Dan-Bunkeringis one of the most popular companies inits sector, is because it has its own ship-ping company in the United Shipping &Trading Company Group.

“Having our own shipping companymeans we understand customer needs,”says Jesper Juhl. “We know where prob-lems can arise and what is important toshipping companies – the right price andtimely delivery of the right products, both onshore and offshore. One of ourspecialities is offshore servicing of all theships which ply the Baltic Sea. Shipssailing to and from ports in the BalticSea know that we have the right prod-ucts. We just need to be told a rendez-vous point and we will be there withoutthe ships needing to call at port. Bunker-ing happens at sea, regardless of thetime, weather or wind.”

It is primarily the company’s large net-work of supply companies and its accessto the product market with the rightprices and qualities which has made thecompany one of the shipping companies’

preferred bunker partners. Dan-Bunker-ing uses a vast number of larger andsmaller operators all over the world.

Lifeline for shipsAnother reason is the egalitarian ap-proach Dan-Bunkering takes to custom-ers. There is no distinction made be-tween a delivery of 1,500 litres to asmall pilot boat or 15,000 tons to theworld’s largest container ships.

“Everyone is entitled to quality, de-livery assurances, good service and allthe extras such as water, provisions, thespecial tobacco for the captain or thecrew or any specialities of food. Wehelp in changing of crews. Or if a sailorgets sick and needs treatment on land. Here too, we are the direct lifeline formany ships,” says Jesper Juhl.

Standing on the bridge, the captain is incommand of extremely valuable prop-erty: the ship, its crew and the cargo. Tohandle this responsibility he has, in ad-dition to his training and experience, acomplicated system of control instru-ments which keep him constantly in-formed of the functioning of the entirevessel down to the smallest valve andpump.

A modern vessel is controlled by suchadvanced computer technology that thehelmsman and captain can essentially sitback, relax and enjoy the trip, with an oc-casional glance at the instrument panels.

The big picture“That glance is very important however, because it gives a total overview andconfirms that everything is as it shouldbe: engine operation, cargo status andship’s course are correct and no unpleas-ant surprises are waiting round the cor-ner. DEIF provides that overview.”

So says director Toke Foss of DEIF A/S,an abbreviation of Danish Electronic In-strument Factory. The company has sup-plied monitoring and control systems forships since 1933. Today DEIF A/S has a50% share of the world market for con-trol equipment for navigation and otherspecialised, illuminated bridge instru-ments.

IMPROVINGSHIP CONTROL

Analogue overview“Safety and reliability is our strength,”says Toke Foss. “While the workings of amodern ship are largely based on com-puter technology, the control instrumentsare still in analogue format. Instead ofshowing digital numbers, our instru-ments translate the electronics intopointers. It might appear technologicallyconservative, but experience shows thatanalogue instrument formats give thebest overview.”

A bridge bristling with instrumenta-tion of all kinds can appear confusing. So in collaboration with a large numberof main suppliers such as Rolls Royceand Kongsberg, DEIF A/S is creating uni-formity and shared standards to replaceconfusion with clarity.

Uniformity“Unfortunately there is still much to bedone,” says Toke Foss. “Because the in-strumentation on the bridge is often pro-vided by many different suppliers, eachwith their own design and colour. Andusually the ship owner or the shipyarddo not specify the design. We make adifference by collaborating with our cus-tomers on design and uniformity to im-prove the overview.”

Since 2002 the Scandinavian airline SAShas implemented austerity measures tobring the company back into the black. In 2006 the company made a profit fol-lowing several years of hefty losses.

But the draconian measures have alsochanged SAS and the way it operates. Informer times, the airline enjoyed an el-evated status, where an attitude of supe-riority prevailed. Today SAS can best bedescribed as adaptable and market ad-justed.

Passenger equality“From being almost unapproachable inour ivory tower, and only really con-cerned with business class customers,we have now come down to earth,” saysdirector Susanne Larsen of SASDanmark, which is one of the four corecompanies in the group that contributedmost to the good results in 2006. “To-day we consider all our passengers to beequally important. Whether it is passen-gers seated at the back flying oneconomy tickets, or those seated in themiddle paying a bit more for flexibility,or our business class passengers with allthe benefits they get. Business class andeconomy extra are still our lifeblood, butwe wouldn’t have them without the pas-senger volume that the economy classadds. We depend on having a goodproduct for all three customer groups.”

Susanne Larsen joined SAS Danmarkin 2004 as director, and since then thecompany has improved its results bymore than DKK 500 million annually.Larsen’s common sense, market instinctand sound business sense have clearlydemonstrated their effect. She has alsointroduced a departure from the airline’spreviously inflexible ways.

New dynamism“Previously, route plans were not ques-tioned. In essence, they were just re-peated from one year to the next,” saysSusanne Larsen. “But if we keep a routewith too few passengers, we lose money.

SAS SURVIVES THE CRISISAVIATION:AVIATION:AVIATION:AVIATION:AVIATION: After six turbulent years, the Scandinavian airline SAS has rediscoveredoptimism and growth. The enormous annual losses since 2002 have at last beenreplaced in 2006 by a surplus, showing that the company’s austerity measures in theform of cost-cutting and mass redundancies have worked.

We must listen to customers, and makeour traffic programme dynamic. By clos-ing some routes, we can open a lot morenew ones. London City, Luxemburg andPalanga are new destinations which veryquickly have become so successful thatwe have increased the frequency or de-ployed larger aircraft. In a dynamic trafficprogramme we fly where customers are,and regularly adjust the number of seatsand flight frequencies to meet customerneeds.”

Cheap tickets mean more passengersThe tough measures implemented bySAS have increased the working hours ofboth pilots and cabin crew. The companyhas also cut costs by pulling several air-craft out of operation. At the same time,SAS Danmark handled 400,000 morepassengers in 2006. The cutting of loss-making routes while at the same timeintroducing one-way and low price tick-ets, has helped raise the cabin factor toa record level of 72.9%.

“The good progress we have made isdue not only to our introduction of lowprice tickets and the advance of budgetairlines, but also the adjustment of ourcommercial products,” says SusanneLarsen. “Cheap tickets mean more pas-sengers. The market has simply becomebigger and that has benefited us all.”

Desire to travelSAS now has a much better capacity uti-lisation of its aircraft and more flexibleroute planning. When SAS reopens a lo-cal route in Greenland (SøndreStrømfjord/Kangerlussuaq) in May, it willonly operate from May to September, when the number of tourists are at itspeak. A new route is also opening be-tween Copenhagen and Pristina inKosovo, as well as extensions of existingroutes to London City Airport, Geneva,Aberdeen, Brussels, Kristianssand andLuxembourg.

“We are currently experiencing a gen-eral boom in aviation,” says SusanneLarsen. “The Danish market is growingby around 600,000 passengers annually,of which we have a 50% share. We ex-pect to see continued growth in the de-sire to travel. Globalisation means moreair travel, and all the exclusivity formerlyassociated with it will disappear. Weneed to be more efficient, and that issomething we are en route to achiev-ing.”

CO2 neutralAircraft emit a lot of CO2. SAS acknowledges this, and isintroducing novel ways of making flights CO2 neutral. From spring 2007, SAS is offering passengers the optionto compensate for the flight’s CO2 emission by reducing itin another sector. Passengers pay an amount dependingof the length of the flight (e.g. Copenhagen to Londoncosts DKK 12-15 per passenger), which goes directly toinvestment programmes in renewables or CO2 reductionelsewhere in the world. The financial transactions and in-vestments in CO2 reduction projects are carried out by anindependent company specialising in this area.

Fingerprint readers save timeIncreased security in airports worldwide is a challenge to air-lines. While taking accounts of these demands, SAS is makingit as easy as possible to fly by looking at ways of optimisingtime use before, during and after the flight. SAS has intro-duced time-saving biometrics when luggage is checked in.Passengers and their luggage are automatically matched witha fingerprint reader. The system has been introduced in Swe-den and will be tested in Denmark during 2007.

SAS will also introduce more fast-tracks at securitycheckpoints to reduce waiting time at the gate to 15 min-utes.

The city of Esbjerg lies on the Danishwest coast, facing the British Isles acrossthe North Sea. A century ago it was nomore than a collection of fishing huts, but today it is Denmark’s fifth largestcity. The cause of the transformation wasthe harbour, which was constructed forthe purposes of Denmark’s first majorexport initiative: Bacon and butter toGreat Britain.

Since then the Port of Esbjerg hasgrown into one of Denmark’s largest.Agricultural exports to Great Britain arenow only part of the picture. Today thedevelopment of the port is equally theresult of offshore activities in the NorthSea, rapidly increasing transit exportsfrom the entire Baltic area, ferries toboth Britain and the continent and as aport of departure for Denmark’s massiveexports of wind turbines.

“North Sea traffic to and from the Portof Esbjerg will, together with offshoretraffic to the oil and gas fields in theNorth Sea, continue to be the activities, which drive the port’s growth,” says portdirector Ole Ingrisch. “We are planningto invest over EUR 140 million on abrand new south harbour and a high ef-ficiency combi-terminal, as well as ex-tending and modernising the existingquay system. The Port of Esbjerg willbecome Denmark’s new intermodal trans-port centre.”

The aim is to increase the amounts ofgoods shipped from the current 4 to 5million tons. Specific investments willinclude a back-up service to the currentcrane capacity with Scandinavia’s largestmobile crane, which can lift 150 tons.Another investment is a completely new

quay, specially designed for drilling rigs, together with additional areas associatedwith the construction of a new wind tur-bine park in the North Sea.

“The offshore industry is increasinglybringing drilling rigs to the Port ofEsbjerg for modernisation and mainte-nance, and we have built up consider-able competences in this field,” saysIngrisch. Out of a total industryworkforce of around 10,000, almost7,000 work in Esbjerg. On top of thatthere is all the offshore industry logis-tics. We have supply ships to the NorthSea that sail up to 70 times a month. And two helicopter companies operate adaily service to the North Sea installa-tions.”
