Dear Friends,
On behalf of the global Special Olympics family, congratulations!
You are here today, at these Summer Games, as an athlete, family member, volunteer, Board
Director, coach, official or fan. You are a community, that together with Special Olympics, will impacteveryone that your meet, sharing with them the amazing experience of our Movement.
Special Olympics believes in creating a world where each person, regardless of ability, isaccepted and welcomed and where every individual contributes to the strength and vibrancy of the whole.
Sports is a universal language which unites people on and off the field of play, and its lessons are relevant
to all of us – families, youth, educators, medical professionals and governments. And as millions moreindividuals are touched by the Special Olympics Movement, the traditional barriers of race, ethnicity,
education level, social status, religion and economic background disappear and the human race as a whole prevails. Your on-going support and participation and your role in sharing Special Olympics in your
community is vital for us to make positive change in the world through sport.
This year we celebrate Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece from 25 Junethrough 4 July. There, we will return to the home of the ancient Olympics, where amidst history andgrandeur, our athletes will lay claim to the future of the Olympic ideals — to assert their vision for a view
of human greatness defined by the bravery, the joy, the determination of the human spirit.
We have also launched the first-ever Movement-wide strategic plan which promises to refocus uson the importance of high quality sport, to channel our energies toward building Special Olympicscommunities, and toward building a strong and sustainable future with new generations of fans, donors,
and leaders. For the first time, we will begin a calendar year united not just around the mission, butaround the ways and means to achieve its fulfillment.
You are an important part of the Special Olympics family – a family that extends around theworld in the largest of cities and the most remote villages. Everyone participating in these National
Games is a vital part of that family, whether you’re a volunteer, coach, family member, sponsor or supporter. The moments of accomplishment that will take place at these Games are only possible because
of our family of fans, and for that, we are enormously grateful.
As you enjoy the amazing experience of Special Olympics through competitions and events, I
encourage every one of you to take your story – your moments of excitement, courage, inspiration andacceptance, and share them with every person you meet.
Now, let the Games begin!
Best Wishes,
Timothy P. Shriver
Chairman and CEO

St. Pius Goes for More than
GoldSpecial Olympics Texas athletes are traveling rom near and
ar to compete in Summer Games. One o the groups tha
traveled the arthest is the St. Pius X Special Needs Group rom
the Greater El Paso area. The group o 82 (37 athletes and
45 coaches and parents) is led by Richard Couder, Head o
Delegation.
Couder ounded the St. Pius
group ater realizing the two
biggest obstacles that men
and women with intellectual
disabilities ace: lack o a social
lie and lack o employment.
He’s hoping participation will
help solve those problems.
“Our mission is to improve the
quality o lie or individuals
with special needs,” Couder
said. “We do not want our
special needs population to
say there is nothing to do, but
[we want them] to recognize
that [St. Pius is available] with
these programs.” That’s exactly
why St. Pius welcomes all
athletes regardless o religious
belies, race, age, disability
and gender and most o the
group’s programs are ree.
The St. Pius team is only six years old, but already more than
70 athletes are on the team. Couder admits there are some
challenges that go along with having such a large group. The
biggest is getting parents involved with St. Pius and fnding
ways to create jobs or the athletes. The parent o a child with
Down Syndrome, Couder believes it his calling to help as many
men, women and children with special needs as he can.
“I have coached sports or over 15 years with the last six in
Special Olympics,” Couder explained. “I get great satisaction
in helping our members be successul in their [sporting]
events and in lie.”
St. Pius’ success includes more than winning medals and
ribbons at Games. The athletes also have many hidden talents
Be sure to attend Opening Ceremonies; you’ll get a sneak peek
o what this group can do outside o competition!
