The Tiny Eagle Press
Brookfield School’s primary grades
newspaper
Note from the editor:
During our 2013 -2014 campaign, our
young reporters learned the basics of
print and electronic news media. We
focused on news reporting and
editorial writing, while hopefully also
gaining a love for, and understanding
of the importance of keeping up with
current events!
For educational purposes, you will see
the same event reported on by more
than one student. It was another
exciting year, and I am very proud of
our little journalists. Hoping you
enjoy this look back at the school
year.
Brookfield School at High Hill
Ranchby Benjamin Margulis, Kaili Abay, and
Bryce Marta
Brookfield first and second graders
took a field trip to High Hill Ranch on
Apple Hill in Placerville, California on
September 17, 2013 to learn about
apples and to have fun. Teachers and
parents came too.
We learned how to make apple juice,
and apple cider. After Bob peels the
apples, the apples go down a conveyor
belt, and one of the workers pulls a
lever, dropping the apples from the
ceiling. Next, the juice is smashed
out of the apples.
We also took a hay ride, ran down a
hill, and watched how apples are
sorted. Every class got to feed the
fish in the pond.
Brookfield SportsBy Benjamin Margulis
Brookfield has a great sports
program! For example, you can play
basketball, tennis, soccer or football
just to name a few of the sports we
have.
One reason sports are good is that
exercise is good for your health. You
can also play with other people and
have a lot of fun.
Our P.E. teacher, Mr. Flolo, is our
coach for most of the sports. Mr.
Flolo has all the equipment that we
need for the sports that we play.
There are lots of great things about
sport, and I am glad that we have a
great sports program at Brookfield!
Coach Flolo rallies his athletes while teaching
the importance of teamwork.
Grammarosaurus!by Venessa Lee
On May 29, 2014, the first graders
once again performed a play called
Grammarosaurus. It is about people
going to try to see the famous
Lochness Monster, Nessie. But the
tourists run into other Grammarosauri
too that teach about grammar.
Students, teachers, and parents saw
the play.
Reporters Kavya Benush as Jessica, and
Hanna Sebok as Roberta, perform in first
grade’s production of “Grammarosaurus.”

Thanksgiving is a Special
Holidayan editorial by Hanna Sebok
I am thankful for Santa because he is
nice! Another thing I am thankful for
is my family because they keep me
company. In addition to that, I am
thankful for my brain because it
keeps me smart. I have a lot of
things that I am thankful for.
Thanksgiving is Specialan editorial by Jake Everett
Thanksgiving is a special holiday. I’m
thankful for my family because they
keep me company. I am thankful for
water because if I didn’t have, I
wouldn’t be alive. I am thankful for
my school because they help me learn.
I am thankful for Thanksgiving
because I get to spend time with my
family. Finally, I am thankful for my
mom and dad because they cook me
dinner.
Thanksgivingan editorial by Kaili Abay
Thanksgiving is a special holiday
because you get to think about why
you are thankful. I’m thankful for my
family, my dogs, and my teacher, Mrs.
Cullen.
Thanksgiving is also special because it
was first celebrated by the Pilgrims
and Indians.
I am thankful for my teacher because
she teaches us and helps me learn. I
am thankful for my family because
they care for me and protect me.
These are the reasons I am thankful.
A Special Holidayan editorial by Owen Chen
Thanksgiving is a special holiday. The
first Thanksgiving was with the
Indians and Pilgrims. The Pilgrims
were thankful because the Indians
helped them grow food.
I am thankful for teachers, because I
would not learn how to read or write
without them. Another think I am
thankful for is school supplies, or I
would having nothing to write with.
Finally, I am thankful for my family,
or would not have anyone to keep me
company.
Beauty and the Beasta review by Hanna Sebok
Brookfield first graders went to the B
Street Theater in Sacramento to see
Beauty and the Beast, a play about
love with Belle and the Beast.
In the beginning, Belle’s sister,
Maggett, was mean to her. Later,
Belle saved her father because she
didn’t want him to die because she
loved him.
Belle’s sister Maggett wanted to
marry the Beast because she wanted
to be rich, and the Beast was rich.
Then the Beast turned into a prince
because Belle loved him. They got
married. Then they lived happily ever
after. I liked this show because it
was interesting.
Brookfield is Moving!by Claire Long, Meena Chen, and
Vanessa Lee
Brookfield School is moving to a new
campus in September of 2014. The
classrooms will be bigger. In addition
to that, every room will have an air
conditioner. Finally, there will be a
preschool so little kids can come to
Brookfield.
Students will be able to do bigger
projects because of the larger rooms.
This will make learning more fun.
Brookfield will not have to share with
the temple, and we will be able to have
class pets.
Brookfield’s new campus construction as of
May 25, 2014
A New Campusby Meena Chen, Nathan Paulos and
Jake Everett
On September 9, 2014, Brookfield
students are moving to a new campus.
We should move because we will have
more room in each classroom. We also
need air conditioners for every
classroom because the heat makes
second graders sweaty and tired.
We will also have cleaner bathrooms.
Finally, our new campus will be huge so
we have move space to play!
Great Teachersan editorial by Bryce Marta, Kaili
Abay, Benjamin Margulis, and Claire
Long
Great teachers are helpful because
they help kids when they are stuck on
something. Teachers have to be a
little strict sometimes. They also
need to be funny, because if they
were strict all the time, they wouldn’t
be any fun for the kids. Teachers are
great because they have a sense of
humor.
Teachers should also be creative
people, should be kind, and should like
children. Brookfield has great
teachers because the love kids. They
need to be compassionate too.
Most importantly, teachers have to be
smart. These the reasons teachers
are great!
Awesome Teachersan editorial by Owen Chen, Hanna
Sebok, and Meena Chen
Brookfield teachers are great
teachers because they loving, kind,
smart, generous—and a little strict.
What’s nice about them is they can
help you, because if you need help, you
can ask the teacher. Then you can be
happy and get a star.
They also give you play time. After
you have play time, you can do more
work and get smarter, and the
teachers will be very proud of you!
Another thing great teachers do is
plan activities. If they said students
can do whatever they want, and the
teacher is just reading the newspaper,
they wouldn’t learn. Teachers are
great!
Lunar New Year at Brookfieldby Owen Chen, Claire Long, Nathan
Paulos, Kaili Abay, and Meena Chen
On February 7, 2014, Brookfield pre-
first, first, and second grade
students celebrated Chinese New
Year. It is the Year of the Horse.
There were many activities. We
colored dragons that were turned into
crowns in Mrs. Mertell’s room. We also
built lanterns with red and black
paper in Mr. Shackelford’s room.
Chinese zodiacs were made with Mr.
Davis. Other activities included
finger painting, and writing with black
Sumi ink. When we heard a “dong”
sound, we changed activities.
We ate sushi, rice, chicken, tofu,
fortune cookies, pot stickers, egg
rolls, and chow mein at a feast. In
addition to kids, there were parents
and teachers.

All About Lovean editorial by Hanna Sebok and Owen
Chen
Valentine’s Day is just around the
corner. It is all about love. One way
to be sweet is if a person is sad, you
can cheer them up. We can also give
cards to our family and friends.
Another way to show love is to help
your mom and dad do chores. In
addition to that, you can give hugs.
Valentine’s Day is awesome!
Valentine’s Dayan editorial by Vanessa Lee, Ben
Margulis, and Meena Chen
Valentine’s Day is about love and being
nice to people. For example, you can
help someone who’s hurt. Another
example is giving chocolate to people.
You can also give people heart shaped
treats.
You can be kind by giving people hand,
like opening doors for them. You can
give people hugs, and thank them for
doing nice things for you, like when
your mom does the laundry. That’s
what Valentine’s Day is all about!
First Gradea reflection by Nathan Paulos and
Jake Everertt
It’s fun in first grade. We can learn a
lot of things! For example, we can go
on field trips like to the Jelly Belly
Factory. You can do ballroom dance
too.
Another fun thing is
“Grammarosaurus” practice. Playing
four square at recess is fun too.
Finally, we can do extra homework
called the “homework challenge.” We
love first grade!
What it’s Like in Second Gradea reflection by Bryce Marta and Kaili
Abay
Second grade is important and fun.
We learned that decimal make a
difference. For example, 1.28 is
different than 128. We also do fun
activities, such as learning about
fractions, and having auctions where
you use fake money to buy real things!
We also do book reports and
dioramas.
Second grade also has a Thanksgiving
party during lunch. We also get to
read during break, and Mrs. Cullen
reads to us. Don’t you think second
grade is exciting?
Brookfield’s Entrepreneur Fair!by Meena Chen, Claire Long, Kaili
Abay, and Vanessa Lee
It was Entrepreneur Day on Friday,
April 4 in the Multi-Purpose room. It
was hosted by the fourth graders, and
all students visited as customers
during different times of the day.
It was fun because we got to eat
candy, drink smoothies, and buy other
cool stuff like Slinkies, raffle tickets,
and bracelets. Other food for sale
was popcorn, cookies and snow cones.
The fourth graders hosted this for
fun, and it taught us business—how to
buy and sell things.

A Look Back at 2013by Vanessa Lee
2013 was an interesting year. For
example, we got a new teacher named
Mr. Shackelford. This was also the
first year with two first grade men
teachers.
Brookfield also got a new math
teacher, Mrs. Camm, for the upper
grades, and a new French teacher,
Madame Michelet, for the lower
grades. Finally, we got a new music
teacher named Mr. Kravchuk.
Our Goals for 2014

better because it’s cool, fun, and
awesome! I can practice at home, and
I can sign up for sports at Brookfield.
Tennis is good for exercise too!

Mrs. Schumacher wants to be extra
patient. She’s going to bet better at
it by taking deep breaths!
Ms. P. wants to be a healthy eater
because she wants to be really
healthy.
My goal for 2014 is to be a great
reader, and to read to the whole,
entire class! I’ll practice a lot to get
better.
--Hanna Sebok, first grade
My goal for 2014 is to get better at
playing Farm, Farm Frenzy. I want to
get better so I can open other farms.
I will be good so I can have more time
on my IPad to practice.
--Claire Long, first grade
I want to get better at acoustic
guitar so I can play for my class. I
will do this by practicing every day.
--Mr. Davis
I want to give a compliment to at least
one person a day. I feel good, and
want others to feel good too. I wake
up every morning and remind myself
to do it.
--Mrs. Renault
My goal for 2014 is that I want to get
healthier. I’m going to achieve my
goal by running laps.
Jake Everett—first grade
My goal for 2014 is to play better
basketball. I want to play better
because it’s good exercise, and it’s
good for your lungs. I’m going to get
better by having basketball lessons
and by practicing.

The Leprechauns Strike Again!by Vanessa Lee, Kaili Abay, Bryce
Marta, and Benjamin Margulis
On March 17, the Leprechauns struck
the second grade classroom again this
year! They made a mess. They put
streamers everywhere, and moved
desks. Isn’t that crazy! Everyone was
screaming because they were so
happy!
The Leprechauns also ate Jolly
Rancher candies and Hershey Kisses,
and threw the wrappers on the floor.
In addition to that, they put all of our
books on the floor. They also left
green coins and hats. Finally, they put
a trash can on top of a desk. They
probably did all of this because they
are so sneaky that you can’t even see
them.
Leprechaun comic by Meena Chen
The Huge Messby Claire Long, Owen Chen, Nathan
Paulos, and Jake Everett
Leprechauns struck our classroom
again this year! They messed up our
class. For example, they tied string
to our chairs and desks so we would
trip. Another thing they did was turn
our essays that were hanging up,
upside down. People were really
excited! Dr. Jo was even taking
pictures of the mess.
The Leprechauns also painted green
17’s all over the clock, painted a clover
in the middle of it, and put green and
gold stuff all over the floor. This
made students scream with
excitement!
Some pre-first students took things in stride
on St. Patrick’s Day despite the Leprechaun’s
mischief.
They also left green footprints on the
floor, and threw math tiles
everywhere. The Leprechauns threw
our bookshelf on the floor, and
messed up our final drafts and
projects. Students made traps, but
they did not work.
Earth Dayby Vanessa Lee and Ben Margulis
Brookfield School celebrated Earth
Day on Monday, April 4, in Land Park.
We went to eat lunch. Then we got
play.
There were many fun things to do.
We played with the parachute, and
some kids played baseball.
We also celebrated Earth Day by
picking up garbage. Pre-first through
8th grade was there.
Eight graders celebrating Earth Day and
friendship in Land Park
Brookfield Celebrates Earth
Dayby Bryce Marta and Kaili Abay
Brookfield students went to Land Park
on April 28, 2014 for Earth Day. We
ate lunch and got to play. Teachers
and students from every grade were
there.
There was a parachute, and some kids
played baseball or tag.
We went to Land Park to celebrate
Earth Day and taking care of the
earth—like picking up trash. Without
the earth, we wouldn’t be alive, or be
able to enjoy the beauty it gives us.
Spirit Week at Brookfieldby Kaili Abay and Hanna Sebok
It’s Spirit Week at Brookfield! On
Wednesday, it’s pajama day. Kids and
teachers are going to get their
pajamas dirty! On Thursday,
Christmas will be the focus. Friday is
wild and crazy day!
On Thursday, I think second grade
will watch a Christmas movie, and they
will talk about what they want for
Christmas on Friday. This is what will
probably happen for the rest of the
week.
Brookfield Art Showby Ben Margulis, Own Chen, Vanessa
Lee, and Hanna Sebok
Brookfield had its annual art show on
May 7, 2014 in the Social Hall.
Teacher, grandparents, parents, and
kids were all invited. Ms. Conrad, our
art teacher was in charge.
Students got to sit where their
picture was, and kids and adults got to
see other students’ pictures too.
There was also ballroom dancing.
We also ate Mexican food. They
served tacos, rice, beans, and chips.
The students had water and lemonade,
and grownups could drink wine. Ice
cream was served too.
The Jelly Belly Factoryby Hanna Sebok and Meena Chen
On April 29, 2014, Brookfield first
graders went to the Jelly Belly
Factory in Fairfield, California.
We saw jelly bean sculptures of
Ronald Reagan, George Washington,
Amelia Earhart, and Mickey Mouse,
We had samples of Jelly Belly beans
to eat. After our tour, we pizza
shaped like a Jelly Belly jelly bean for
lunch.

Jelly Bellyby Meena Chen, Jake Everett, and
Nathan Paulos
Both first grade classes went to the
Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield,
California for our last field trip of the
year. We saw the Jelly Belly sign, a
Jelly Belly truck, and the factory.
In the factory, we saw sculptures of
George Washington and Ronald
Reagan. We saw Mickey Mouse too.
We had a tour guide who showed us
how Jelly Bellies are made. She also
gave us some samples.
After the tour, we got a free bag of
jelly beans, and had a pizza shaped
like a jelly bean.
